Vince Young to SF 49ers?

So, recent news broke out that the Titans have told Vince Young to leave team facilities...  Although the owner was adamant that VY will return next season after surgery, this shows that the team is looking a different direction.

Thus, the 49ers are obviously in need of a QB.. is VY the answer...  Although he hasn't been great, he has put up very decent statistics.. Most noticeably, his low interception rate..

Vince Young 2010 Stats

10 TDs

3 INT

about 1200 passing yards.. with Longs of 71 and 52 yards..

98.6 Passer Rating

Remember he's been injured couple times at the end of games so he could've had better stats..

WUTCHUTHINK?  and what would you give up for him?

What will the 49ers have to give up?

by clrncbll on Nov 23, 2010 1:29 PM PST reply actions

If we don't have to give up anything... I'm on board with giving it a go

But I wouldn’t give up a 3rd rounder for the guy.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Do you think there is a “Alex Smith to TEN Titans?” at Music City Miracles?

I’d take VY. I think he’s gotten a raw deal in Tennessee because Fisher doesn’t like him. All the dude does is win. More than we can say for anyone around here. I’d give up like a 6th for him.

You need a strong QB coach...

…if you want Vince Young on your roster. Right now we don’t have any good strong offensive coaches, and Vince barley puts in the minimum as it is when it comes to off-season prep, practice, and film study. I’d hate to say it, but you would need a Head Coach with a strong skill set in keeping players motivated (like Sing) + a great offensive coach either as the Off Cordinator and/or QB coach (Like Marty Mornhinweg).

I don’t think Sing will be back unless he gets the offense working and basically wins throughout (doubtful). Look at Philly, they have too great QB coaches there that played a huge part in Vick’s success, Ried and Mornhinweg. Who do the Niners have? Yup, we need to fix the Niners from the management and coaches, our personal is fine.

by pt33 on Nov 23, 2010 2:25 PM PST reply actions

yep

the book on him is he is a 9-5 QB.

And what has he done that shows he can handle the pressure of a franchise QB? Walk out on his team multiple times? Throw temper tantrums?

by hudd07 on Nov 23, 2010 4:57 PM PST up reply actions

Sure, why not?

The guy is a bit volatile, so he’ll need the right coaching. I do think he is worth a shot, (this is under the assumption there will indeed be a new 49ers coaching staff led by an offensive minded head coach).

As for how to acquire him, I wouldn’t give up more than a 4th round pick. Also, I believe he is getting a hefty salary that I’m not sure he’s worth. The 49ers obviously do need to improve at quarterback, and he could help. I’m not sure he will ever be “the answer,” but he’d likely be better than what we have. I think a draft pick will have to be a quarterback, as well.

Punched out a guy at a strip club for talking smack about UT. And now he is throwing his pads into the stands? I was a huge VY fan up until I heard what he did last Sunday. He obviously can’t keep his emotions in check when necessary. It’s just not worth it sometimes.

Agreed, talent doesn't always trump personality

Look at Owens. I think he did a lot more harm to the 49ers than we benefited from his tremendous talent. I haven’t kept up with Young’s career, but I know he is good. I don’t think he was T.O. good though.

Even if you did want him, what do you think that you'd have to give up to get him?

Whatever it is, he isn’t worth it. He’s just an immature jerk … huge ego, no brain.

by 49erFanSince1950 on Nov 23, 2010 4:51 PM PST reply actions

Well then maybe we should hold off until he actually comes in to his own and matures.

Jeff Fisher is a pretty good motivator. I just think getting Vince Young now would be the same as playing Russian Roulette. I could be on board if I knew that he was coming in to compete with another viable candidate and was okay with riding the pine if he did not win the job. However, let me just clarify that I do NOT think he would be okay with that.

Young is an egotist that seriously needs to grow up.

And there’s nothing that indicates that he intends to do that. If this was a Vincent Jackson kind of scenario, where the talent is so ridiculous that you’d have cause to think about it, maybe, but I’ve been underwhelmed with his play on Sundays. He’s still riding the hype of his (yes, amazing) Rose Bowl performance.

Nope

Not with season ending injury on his thumb. If we could get him and have him start next week I’d think long and hard about it, but the soonest we could get him would be after the season’s over, and at that point we need to start thinking about drafting a QB.

by smileyman on Nov 23, 2010 6:47 PM PST reply actions

Vince Young..

I believe we should go with picking him up on the off season. His stats don’t lie. He is a winner. But we need a coach to get his emotions in check. But thats something for Vernon Davis. Davis is a great leader. ( really glad he signed and extension along with P Willis ). I liked Vince Young. I always thought he is a good QB but he needs to do a little more work. I think if he is asked to leave it could be a wake up call. If not. We will have to do something. On the other hand. His Ego needs to be put in check. But I believe the correct coach ( Gruden, Harbaugh, Dungy [ I wish ], and ect. ) they can get is act straight. But im the kind of person who judges a player on what he does on the field. And on the field. I like what I see.

I don't think it should be done while Singletary is head coach.

Because the next coach might not want him as the qb. Wait for the new head coach to come in and let him pick his guy.

3rd pick or less for VY is cool

Sure he has issues on and off the field but his better any of the QBs we have, and he know how to win. Beside no matter what happen this season we will most likely draft a QB and bring in a QB via FA why not take a chance on VY and have the rookie learn the system on the sideline.

by sfniners4life on Nov 24, 2010 1:09 AM PST reply actions

No thanks - for many reasons

- No guarantee he will be cut loose (Bud Adams likes him, and Fisher may be out the door first).
- Just because he’s better than any of the QBs we have doesn’t mean he’s the guy we want – we want a FRANCHISE QB, and VY isn’t one.
- While I admire his desire to get back into the game with a busted thumb, I don’t like the fact that once told he wasn’t getting back in, VY just gave up. Then he calls out his coach in the locker room.
- The one authority figure who could keep him on the straight and narrow (Sing) won’t be here next year.
- Fans go bat-s**t crazy whenever we trade a pick for less than a sure thing because “we may miss someone worth keeping.”

If we really want to rebuild, then rebuild – don’t just go through the scrap heap. Find a stable, veteran QB (not Rattay/Dorsey), draft one of the young guns (if we can get into the top 5) to watch and learn and go from there.

Yea.. I’d have to say that both side have a good argument.

So, instead of picking Locker (bust in waiting IMO) and maybe i’ll take a look at Ryan Mallet, but i’d rather use that 1st rounder on a CB like LSU Patterson and Nebraska Prince instead.

I’ve seen this happen before and I never understand how….

To those of you who have ever even one time suggested that Jim Harbaugh deserves a chance to coach the 49ers in 2010 because, and I quote: "Bill Walsh coached for Stanford, and that worked out pretty well," I would like to introduce you to a comprehensive list of candidates that, by virtue of your having ever uttered those words, you have deemed worthy of an NFL head coaching job in 2010: Walt Harris, Buddy Teevens, Tyrone Willingham, Dennis Green, Jack Elway (deceased 9 years), Paul Wiggin, Rod Dowhower, Jack Christiansen (deceased 24 years), John Ralston, Jack C. Curtice (deceased 28 years), Marchmont Schwartz (deceased 19 years), Clark Shaughnessy (deceased 40 years), C. E. Thornhill (deceased 54 years), Pop Warner (deceased 56 years), Andrew Kerr (deceased 41 years), Eugene Van Gent (long since deceased), Walter Powell (long since deceased), Bob Evans (long since deceased), Jim Wylie (long since deceased), Floyd Brown (long since deceased), George Presley (long since deceased), James Lanagan (long since deceased), C. L. Clemens (long since deceased), C. M. Fickert (long since deceased), Fielding Yost (long since deceased), Burr Chamberlain (long since deceased), H. P. Cross (long since deceased), G. H. Brooke (long since deceased), Walter Camp (long since deceased), and Pop Bliss (long since deceased). So the next time you want to suggest that 23 dead guys are qualified to coach the San Francisco 49ers in 2010, I urge you to please, please give the issue a moment's thought and use some real logic instead.

Titans fan here.

Don’t get your hopes up that he’ll be available. Our owner Bud Adams got Vince Young drafted to this team in the first place; Jeff Fisher didn’t want him. Bud Adams had to do some major string-pulling to get VY a starting job. Then he blew it with his immaturity. Then when Kerry Collins took us to a 0-6 start, Bud Adams took the oppurtunity to pull the “You should change QBs now to Young, oh and I’m your boss and our team is winless” card. Now Young got season-ending surgery and Fisher and Young had a falling out.

1, the media is having a field day with this. But the Titans have a history of having the patience and willingness to deal with players that have big character/mental flaws [Young, Nickey, Haynesworth, Pacman Jones, and now Randy Moss].

Sure, Young may not see the field next season if another QB does well enough but Rusty isn’t that good and Kerry Collins… just plain sucks. Our new roster spot went to Simms. He’s sucks too, I mean, he played bad against 3rd and 4th string defenses in the preseason. Even if another guy does step up, as long as Bud Adams is owner, Young will be in Tennessee.

by fanoftheunderdogs on Nov 24, 2010 4:20 PM PST reply actions

My main point is: Vince Young having problems with Jeff Fisher and vice versa isn't new.

It’s just now it spilled over because of a 3-game losing streak. Same deal with any team. Winning cures everything.

Besides, Vince Young having problems with our head coach doesn’t matter in regards to his long-term with the team. Sure it impacts his short-term, but unless he somehow pisses off the owner or punches Jeff Fisher in the face, he’ll be with the Titans.
