Simple Poll: Can Jeff Fisher Solidify the Niners' Head Coaching Job?

Ok, everybody's heard: The Titans will dump Jeff Fisher and/or Vince Young by next season. The question here is, what if Jeff Fisher was the one let go by Tennessee? If the Niners replaced Mike Singletary with him, would he lead us to an NFC West title in 2011? I do understand that this is a very, very big if, but that's the great part about blogs; no matter how ridiculous the idea is, it's still great to think about what could happen.

Now usually, the franchise would dump the player, and not the renowned head coach. However, Vince Young is a first round potential franchise quarterback, so I assume that the Titans would rather dump the coach than dump the most important player on the team.

We all know that Jeff Fisher is arguably a top-10 coach in the league right now. I don't need to mention all his success in the past. There is a decent shot that he'd come to San Fran, being a Southern California kid growing up. If he's willing to come, what should the front office do?

I'd really like to acquire Jeff Fisher, if he became available.

Jeff Fisher is almost certainly done in Tennesee

I’d think the 49ers have a great chance at landing him if they want to.

I’m under the impression the Cowboys would outbid anyone for Fisher.

Depends on how enamored of Jason Garret they are

I think that if Garrett has a decent finish the job is his. if not Jones will definitely want Fisher

DEN has now IMO has a HC that is on the hot seat too..

Bowlen must be pissed at McDaniels by now. Getting rid of Shanahan was one thing. Hiring this wannabe is another.

The 49ers in all probability will hire an offensive HC. One who will find a QB. TEN is trying to shove a QB down Fisher’s throat. Guess which 49er QB was being forced down a coaches throat here? I doubt Alex Smith is back in SF next season. I hope he isn’t.

TEN must have a plan in their back pocket. They can’t be this stupid after what Fisher has done there. For Vince Young? Over Fisher? If they truly believe Fisher can’t coach this mental case, then they are right. Ditka traded his whole draft away for a mental case Ricky Williams. Williams isn’t a QB. You don’t fire a Head Coach because of a player who simply can’t handle the NFL. Unless you were dumb enough to trade a whole draft because of him, and Fisher wasn’t on board with Young in the first place.

I love Jeff Fisher, but he isn’t the answer for this team. The answer for this team is having an offense ranked on the top 5 every season, like they used to be. Maybe if the gave Fisher the same amount and even more power they gave Nolan it might work. But McNair was his best QB, and if you look at the numbers and stats of TEN, they aren’t that remarkable. McNair’s best year was in 2003 as far as TD to INT ratio goes. That was his peak with a passer rating over 100. Vince Young’s stats are horrid, yet he is having his best season this year while still being mediocre crybaby.

If TEN is going after somebody bigger than Jeff Fisher, then there is no way in Hell they can force Vince Young on him. So they must be using this as an excuse over power of the team. It’s as stupid a move like John York did with Mooch. If you don’t have anybody better in your back pocket, the first thing you don’t do is blame the coach for your miscues as a FO and Ownership. Especially when it comes to Jeff Fisher, who will have his choice of opportunity if he is let go. Fisher and Parcells in MIA? Marvin Lewis on the hot seat? Lovie Smith in his final season if he doesn’t reach the NFC Championship? Hell, toss in AZ and a host of teams that will need an HC in the future.

But Fisher needs a QB, and the main problem with the 49ers is that they can’t find one. Only a person that truly understands that position is a guy who can build a team around him. Fisher hasn’t done that. Again he had McNair, but go look up his numbers.

Besides, Fisher will probably coach in the East somewhere, because he really coaches East Coast football anyway.

If Alex was being forced down Sing’s throat, then why did he put so much of his own energy into avoiding competition at the position?

Bill Romanowski..

said in a radio interview that he asked Jed York why they didn’t pursue Vick. He said Jed told him he thought they weren’t just one player away. Well, just look at the QB roster. Singletary wasn’t opposed at the idea of Vick, but we really can’t take much out of that. What I get out of this is that the FO has been behind Smith, and the lack of pursuit of a solid veteran that can take over, is something that has been done ever since Smith was drafted. It isn’t just Singletary not creating competition for Smith. Nolan didn’t do that either. The 49ers were steadfast and stubborn with Smith. They refuse to believe that he isn’t very good, and the more the QB they didn’t draft continues to play lights out, the more IMO the 49ers want to prove Smith is that said QB.

Eh, the name is more commonly spelled Fischer. Probably. Maybe.

Anyway, if he comes here, I’ll never get it wrong again.

To those of you who have ever even one time suggested that Jim Harbaugh deserves a chance to coach the 49ers in 2010 because, and I quote: "Bill Walsh coached for Stanford, and that worked out pretty well," I would like to introduce you to a comprehensive list of candidates that, by virtue of your having ever uttered those words, you have deemed worthy of an NFL head coaching job in 2010: Walt Harris, Buddy Teevens, Tyrone Willingham, Dennis Green, Jack Elway (deceased 9 years), Paul Wiggin, Rod Dowhower, Jack Christiansen (deceased 24 years), John Ralston, Jack C. Curtice (deceased 28 years), Marchmont Schwartz (deceased 19 years), Clark Shaughnessy (deceased 40 years), C. E. Thornhill (deceased 54 years), Pop Warner (deceased 56 years), Andrew Kerr (deceased 41 years), Eugene Van Gent (long since deceased), Walter Powell (long since deceased), Bob Evans (long since deceased), Jim Wylie (long since deceased), Floyd Brown (long since deceased), George Presley (long since deceased), James Lanagan (long since deceased), C. L. Clemens (long since deceased), C. M. Fickert (long since deceased), Fielding Yost (long since deceased), Burr Chamberlain (long since deceased), H. P. Cross (long since deceased), G. H. Brooke (long since deceased), Walter Camp (long since deceased), and Pop Bliss (long since deceased). So the next time you want to suggest that 23 dead guys are qualified to coach the San Francisco 49ers in 2010, I urge you to please, please give the issue a moment's thought and use some real logic instead.

Too Good To Ever Happen!

Of all the currently available coaches, Jeff Fisher would be the best. Make him GM and Head Coach.

by Ninerpoints on Nov 26, 2010 7:05 AM PST reply actions

Not my first choice...but he's in the conversation

While I’d say VY is more likely to stay put in TEN than Fisher, it’s still not a sure thing that he goes. Bud Adams knows that Fisher took his franchise to a Super Bowl when no other coaches did – not Bum Phillips, not Jerry Glanville, not Jack Pardee.

I’d go for Gruden or Holmgren (if he can wrangle his way out of CLE) before Fisher, but I’d take Fisher over Harbaugh – reason being that Fisher has way more NFL experience.

This is yet another reason why hiring a permanent coach before the season is over would be a mistake – you run the risk of missing out on any possible candidates who may pop up after the final game.

by NinerEd on Nov 26, 2010 10:28 AM PST reply actions

Why is that?

Fire Mike Singletary immediately if not sooner.

by riderless on Nov 26, 2010 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

I'd be curious to know why as well

I think if you have a shot at a Jeff Fisher, you take him.

The team is already built to win a Fisher-style game. We have big hitters on defense in the linebacking corps and the secondary. We have an all-pro running back. All we are missing is a QB who can hit a big play. It doesn’t have to be a Peyton Manning… Hell, Fisher rode Kerry Collins’ arm to a 13-3 record!!!

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Nov 27, 2010 6:14 AM PST up reply actions

I don't really like any of the poll options, so I'm not voting

Firstly, I don’t think Fisher is a genius.
Secondly, I don’t think Mike knows what he’s doing.
Thirdly, I don’t need a few weeks to decide.

My take is that Jeff is a very good defensive minded coach, but I really think the 49ers must go in a more distinctly different direction with the next head coach. I’m not so sure Jeff would create the widespread philosophical change this team needs. So while I’m not against Fisher, he wouldn’t be on my primary list. It may sound cliche and typical, but I agree with the many people bringing up the offensive names of Holmgren, Gruden, Harbaugh, etc.

I would sort of freak out (in a good way) if we manage to bring Holmgren back home. It also would be interesting if the 49ers brass somehow get Gruden AND Holmgren in different capacities, but that is the longest of all long shots, especially monetarily. But they do come from similar pedigree, so it could work. But that’s more of a fan boy dream than a potential reality. Either one of them would be good for this franchise.

Anyway, the short winded version: I think the 49ers need a offensive minded coach, and it would be poetic to bring someone in from the Walsh tree.

As he willingly plays Cortland Finnegan! Last time I checked Fisher was supposed to be about discipline, well obviously that’s not true.

Finnegan is rated as the 6th dirtiest player in the league....

and after being told that, he said he aspires to be #1, total scumbag. However, he does have some skills and he has shown flashes of potential to be really good if he actually focused on getting better and playing.

That said, you can’t fault a coach for playing a guy who makes his team better. Especially when you cover Johnson twice a year, you need to have quality players.

by 9thevolution on Nov 30, 2010 6:46 AM PST up reply actions

What about Rob Ryan?

I heard that Rob Ryan is a good X’s and O’s guy, and very good at changing gameplans from week to week, something the Niners seem to be lacking right now. If we can’t get Fisher, what do you think about getting Ryan?

by REDANDGOLD8 on Nov 30, 2010 10:22 AM PST reply actions

Someone mentioned this in our head coaching thread

It’s not a bad thought, but you’re looking at a guy who’s never been a HC and is defensive oriented. Most people will shoot this down because they want an offensive HC to bring stability to that side of the ball. A team with a great offense and sub-par defense can still win games, but a team who can’t score points can’t win games.

The main thought with Fisher is that he’s the longest tendered HC in the league right now and has pretty consistently produced winning teams, plus he’s been to a SB. This would at least to an extent give us some continuity and give us a guy who knows what it takes to coach a winning team.
