College GameDay Thread 11/26

Some big names playing today. Right now it's #2 Auburn vs #11 Alabama. I'm rooting for Alabama in this one because an Auburn loss improves the chances of Boise playing in the national championship.

Tonight we've got #1 Oregon vs Arizona, which ought to be a pretty good game, as well as Boise vs Nevada, which ought to be another great game.

Here are the results from the earlier games. Noel Devine didn't get a ton of carries in the WV game but when he got the ball he looked good.

national title game

While I’d love to see Boise or TCU get a crack at the national title game, there’s one problem with that. If either gets in the BCS people can say, “See? The system works.” If both go undefeated and don’t get in, it’s one more reason to move towards a playoff or anything better than the current setup.

It would suck for Boise and TCU but long term it would be benefucial.

I would love a college playoff. It makes the most sense.

Just take the top 12 and just take the first 6 games and make them the larger bowl games. Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, etc…

That works

or you could do every conference champion plus a few at large.

Either way it’s not an impossible scenario, but it’ll never happen because of the money the BCS generates for itself. There’s a great article in last week’s Sports Illustrated about the money factor in college

by smileyman on Nov 26, 2010 1:05 PM PST up reply actions

I think they could generate more revenue if they just arranged things regionally.

’cause you could still have the major bowl games the same and then add even more. You would have 3 more rounds after your major bowl games to get to a champion.

It won’t happen anytime soon but I bet we will see something of that nature in our lifetime’s.

Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result. -Lombardi

playoff

I agree in using the bigger bowls. You use the four major bowls and then rotate in bowls like the Cotton Bowl, Gator Bowl, etc…

The one argument against a playoff is the ability to sell tickets and get people to the games, but given how important all the games become I don’t think it would be too difficult. Maybe you wouldn’t get as many supporters of the two teams, but I don’t think selling those playoff bowl games would be a problem.

I’d say you might continue with the automatic qualifiers to appease the big conferences. Then you include some at-large candidates. Honestly you could go with 8 teams and be fine. You have seven bowl games, so you have the big four, the national title game and then two others rotating in. You could use the BCS ranking system for picking the at-larges. Also, instead of going with the big 6 conferences and 2 at-larges, you just take the top 8. Teams just after 8 might complain, but there’s a big difference between a 9, 10, 11 ranked team complaining about not being in the top 8, and an undefeated TCU or Boise complaining about the top two spots.

by David Fucillo on Nov 26, 2010 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I think that would be cool. I would love to see a system like that...or similar.

Colleges actually make less money going to a bowl game

many bowl teams end up owing the bowls money because of the way the finances are structured. A playoff (of any kind) would keep the money in the various conferences instead of being sent to the bowl.

by smileyman on Nov 26, 2010 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

the money

I’d argue the money could be figured out pretty easily in the end. Turning some of these bowls into playoff games will likely increase television ratings, which means the networks are paying more for the rights and they’re making more money through commercial time. It would allow for a restructuring of the payouts to all parties involved. Obviously that’s a little bit pie in the sky, but the opportunity is there for major positive change.

I think a group is trying to make a claim that the BCS violates anti trust laws.

But I’m not a lawyer so I don’t fully understand how they violate anti trust laws.

anti-trust

The state of Utah has been going after the BCS for a few years now. The Utah Attorney General is leading that cause. I’m sure there are other groups as well.

article

This is an SI article from a few weeks ago about the Utah AG. If Auburn loses this game and Boise or TCU ends up in the title game he takes a hit.

You would think it would help the BCS' cause

But I said months ago that if Boise or TCU got in, the ADs and Presidents of Big Ten and SEC schools would be upset over a non BCS school getting the money that comes with it instead of automatic BCS qualifiers.

Low and behold, Ohio States president began the road to me being right. I’m all for anything that would help move towards a playoff.

If TCU or Boise gets it

Many people said that it would allow the BCS to prove it works for the “little guy” to make it and prove they have a chance.

I didn’t think that many comments would pop up. LoL

Thanks for getting this up for me smileyman...

I sort of dropped the ball last night. I had a ton of family stuff going on.

There are some good games today and so far Alabama is doing what I thought they would do. I knew Auburn was ranked way too high and Cameron Newton is very overrated.

On another note, cannot wait to see Colin Kaepernick tonight. Out of all the QB’s (besides Luck) he is my favorite…

I don't see how people say College is better than NFL

Just looking at the box scores…71 – 3? It’s hard to rub the score up that high in Madden. And I can’t see it that interesting if the teams are so mismatched.

Not trying to start a whole discussion thread about it, so I am curious, what is the appeal of college football to you guys? I will leave it at that so it doesn’t hijack the thread, thanks in advance.

by AKinferno on Nov 26, 2010 1:30 PM PST reply actions

college sports appeal

I think this goes more towards college sports as a whole, but there’s a passion from the fans that I think extends beyond what we see in the NFL. NFL fans are certainly passionate about the game, but I think colleges bring an even greater passion because you’ll almost always have a greater connection to your college than to any pro team unless you have a family member playing for that team. That makes it easier to look past the on-field product at times.

The talent is less even across the board, but I really see it as coming down to the passion for school or state. Somebody mentioned to me that in Alabama, you’re either an Auburn fan or Alabama fan and that’s it for life. I suppose that exists with 49ers and Raiders to a degree, but I really don’t think it’s remotely on the same level as some of the passion in college.

by David Fucillo on Nov 26, 2010 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

as far as hijacking the thread...

I think given that this is a college thread, this kind of discussion is welcome as long as it doesn’t turn into some kind of flame war. Since we’re not a college blog there are few opportunities here for this kind of discussion so I’m perfectly fine with it in this thread. Preferably people will just reply to this post (AKinferno’s not mine) to keep the conversation flowing.

by David Fucillo on Nov 26, 2010 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

Cool, and thanks again for the insight

I guess that makes much more sense than other reasons I have heard, like “players play harder cause they are trying to get a job” or “Play with passion, cause they aren’t being paid to do it.” But I guess imagining rooting for your team, but knowing they are gonna get slaughtered every week by 70 points would make my school pride less focused on the football team, lol.

by AKinferno on Nov 26, 2010 1:54 PM PST up reply actions

I love college football

I think it has as much to do with pride and such as passion. Not that NFL rivalries and so forth aren’t great, but there is, to me, no non-playoff NFL atmosphere that could ever match the atmosphere of certain college games. Ohio St-Michigan, Oklahoma-Texas, Florida St-Florida, and others are just another kind of monster.

I’ve seen a few live NFL games, and the atmosphere is not even remotely close to some college games I’ve been to. The WVU-Pitt game is what I look forward to most every year in football outside of postseasons.

Oh, and WVU won the Backyard Brawl again this year. See ya next year, Pitt.

Yea, but again, seems like you have to have a top team

If you are the team that might squeeze out a win now and them, do they get as hyped as the other teams? I was more into basketball in school, and we had a winning team, so the crowd was always amped. But is it the same if your school team is garbage?

Boise-TCU

One upside to Boise or TCU ending up in the national title game is that if both make BCS bowls, it would help the Mountain West’s bid to become a BCS conference. The MWC is in the midst of an evaluation period for becoming an automatic bid league. Boise State is joining the MWC next year and their recent BCS appearances count for the Mountain West’s bid!

One note: I’m originally from Las Vegas and a UNLV fan, thus a Mountain West fan.

The Ducks deserve their spot in the title game if they win out, without a doubt. Particularly after they absolutely wrecked Stanford earlier this year. Of course, I’m sure the Ohio State President might have a problem with that!

Alabama leaving points on the board. Auburn defense stepping up, but Bama’s got break through with TDs if they want to win this.

Of course...

If Alabama wins, there’s a really good chance Stanford goes to the Rose Bowl. If TCU or Boise goes to the national title game, the Rose Bowl doesn’t have to take the other over the Pac-10. If Auburn (or any other major conference team) goes to the title game against Oregon, Rose Bowl has to take either TCU or Boise if they win out.

overrated?

The last 4 national title winners were from the SEC. Maybe it sucks to keep having the SEC there, but they keep winning it so I don’t know if I’d call those teams overrated.

Colt McCoy woul like a word with you...

If he plays the entire game, Alabama doesn’t win the title last year.

And I can’t help but think Auburn just isn’t a championship caliber team. They’re constantly behind in every game it seems. And can absolutely see Oregon destroying them; but because of Murphy’s Law (lol) Auburn wins in the last minute after playing the first 3 quarters 17 points behind.

BCS

I’m not saying Texas couldn’t have won that game with a healthy Colt McCoy. Although 24 points against Texas in the second quarter is solid no matter who was QB for Texas. Obviously the game would have been different with McCoy, but to claim Alabama was overrated because of something like that is a little ludicrous.

I’m just saying that I don’t think the SEC is filled with overrated teams. Auburn may not be the best team in the country, but to win enough to get into the national title game seems to mean you’re of some kind of caliber close to championship.

by David Fucillo on Nov 26, 2010 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

That is exactly the point

they keep putting the SEC teams in, so obviously they have a 50% chance of winning…it just seems that they try to pick their team with the best chance of going undefeated, and make sure every game/call goes their way, JUST so they can have a team in the national championship game….i would say the big 10 is probably the toughest conference this year, i mean look what ohio state did to oregon in their bowl game last year, with pretty much the same teams they have now

by sanfranfanmdk on Nov 26, 2010 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

huh?

The BCS rankings aren’t the best system for ranking the top teams but it’s not like the BCS title game randomly picks an SEC team. They win their games against a very tough conference and there are 10 different polls involved. Maybe it’s not great, but you make it sound like there’s some huge conspiracy by the SEC. Sorry but I don’t buy what you’re selling.

As for same teams in your Oregon mention? The Ducks have a new QB who’s putting up better numbers than Masoli did last year.

Thats why I said it wasn't too major

My coach always told me that it is better to go too hard then have to tone it down than too soft and having to bring it up.

Well it could be on multiple players so can’t just place it on one guy or on the line all the time. Sometimes the QB holds on too long (ask Troy Smith).

Solid numbers when trailing or tied. Although, they’ve only trailed in one game this year I think.

The good news...

is that TCU is still undefeated for now. Just need one undefeated not making the title game to move change forward if even just a little bit.

by David Fucillo on Nov 26, 2010 10:57 PM PST reply actions

Boise's defense...

got gashed and gassed. Nevada’s defense played great outside of some great plays made from Boise from Moore, Young and Martin. Nevada’s defense got them outta rhythm, and Boise could not stop Nevada in the second half.
