49ers-Chargers Final Injury Report: Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes Hurting
The San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers released their final injury reports and both teams are fairly banged up heading into Thursday Night Football on the NFL Network. The Chargers will definitely be without Patrick Crayton and likely without Antonio Gates. Randy McMichael is a decent option at tight end, but he's no Antonio Gates. Of course the Chargers whipped up on the Chiefs without Gates, so we'll see how much of a difference it really makes. Additionally, two-thirds of their defensive line is listed as probable. Not likely a big deal, but something worth noting.
The biggest concern on the 49ers injury report is the questionable nature of both their inside linebackers, Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes. They both suffered hand injuries last week against Seattle and have been in casts this week. After the jump I've posted some practice video from CSN Bay Area that shows the two of them working out with some serious casts. If this were a Sunday game I'd have virtually no worries about them playing. The short week however makes things a little tougher to call. I think they'll both be out there, but it sounds like they'll be game-time decisions.
After the jump we've got the full injury reports and some video of Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes in casts at practice...
49ers

OT Joe Staley (fibula)
K Joe Nedney (right knee)

RB DeShawn Wynn (ankle)
RB Brian Westbrook (ankle)
TE Nate Byham (shoulder)
Chargers

LB Larry English (foot)

TE Antonio Gates (foot)
Questionable

LB Brandon Siler (ribs)
OG Louis Vasquez (neck)
S Pat Watkins (knee)

Don't see James on this list.
That means secondary is at full strength, a major plus against a team throws deep.

I really do not know that having will james on the field will benefit the team.
we will see if he plays and how he does though.
prefer terrel brown and philips adams.

I don't think we should be too heartened
But it does make it a little interesting to know that SD’s #1 and possibly #2 receivers may be out for this game. However, they do have three decent guys at running back and will likely end up running several screens, mainly to Sproles. And we know how our D is susceptible to the screen pass. Hopefully we’re doing our best especially this week to improve on our numerous shortcomings defending that!
Don't mind me, I'm on a roller coaster. . .

Nice all three ILB on the roster are injured.

that does bother me
although I fully expect both Spikes and TK to play…club or not.
Trust me, I have no idea either.

They'll play...
But with some of the sorry tackling issues we’ve had this year. I will hate to see those clubs add P52 and Spikes to that club.
If willis and spikes are not playing
we have no chance. Will have to play kristick or some other roster body to fill in.
When is our QB going to answer questions like "You only threw 4 TD's today. What's wrong with the offense?" I miss the 90's.....
When Troy Smith learns the offense!!!

Kristick and Bowman would probably start, and Ahmad Brooks has played ILB before so he would likely see time there as well. That’s a scary rotation, and not in a good way.

I sure hope so. We are sunk if Kristick, Bowman, and Brooks are our only hope at ILB.

Gates played last week, however, because it is a Thursday game it has been "known" he will be out.
If Floyd and Crayton don’t play that will extremely limits what Rivers can do in the passing game because then Buster Davis and the 3 RBs become their leading receivers (statistically). Additionally, the 49ers have the leagues 9th best rushing defense. If Patrick Willis and TKO can play at somewhat full strength i believe the 49ers can hold San Diego to less than 20 points, which gives us a great chance to win.

I don't think Willis and Spikes would miss a huge game like tommorow.
At least Patrick won’t, he’s played with a cast before.

It looks like they have casts on some of their fingers also
I guess you don’t need fingers on defense lol
it is really weird that both players have casts on the same place and on same hand.
Was Seattle playing dirty?
That jet’s tripping event and shaun hill saying someone tried to re-break his arm in a pile up, I would not throw it past any nfl team to be doing something dirty like this.

If Willis and Spikes are out
I’d like to see the team roll out a 4-man front more often than not. However, since Patrick Willis will play through any injury, we only need to hope TKO can suck it up and play. I think both will.

Say It Aint So!
Our two best LB’s and maybe the Two Best LB’s in the game with casts? They are both tough as nails but it does make their usual “stop them dead in their tracks” tackling maybe not as proficient. We should still win however!

I believe that the Niners will turn in their best defensive performance of the season!
Really, their season, such as it is, hangs in the balance against a team that has lost twice to the Raiders (a team we beat earlier this season..). If the Niners can find a way to put away the Chargers, then they truly control their own destiny. St. Louis is playing an improved Chiefs team, while the SeaHags are getting pounded by the Falcons. That could leave the Niners tied for the division lead at 6-8 with tie breakers against both the SeaHags and the Lambs. Then the Lambs play the Niners at the Stick, and finish up with the Sea Hags. The Sea Hags play the hardest schedule playing the Niners in Candlestick, Atlanta, Tampa, and then the Lambs. They may be out of it by the time they play the Lambs, because they should lose to both Atlanta AND Tampa. So that really makes it a 2 horse race IF the Niners can win against the Lambs, then all we have left is to put the Cards out of their misery! This senerio looks great IF and only IF they can beat the Lambs again at CANDLESTICK! That game is a MUST WIN! GO NINERS !!
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
Ssssshhhhhhhhhhhh
Let him have his moment.

Looks like Spikes and Willis may be out
TKO seems to say on twitter that they won’t go
