2010 NFL Scouting Combine Preview

Nfl-combine-logo_mediumThe National Invitational Camp is set to take place in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium and college football fans and NFL fans alike are gearing up to watch their favorite players take the field in performances of both physical and mental drills. This process is to help NFL Teams gauge the value of the rookie class that will be entering the NFL in each given year. This event occurs by invitation only. A player must receive and invite to participate. Outside of the Combine certain schools will hold what is called a "Pro day". This is the other event that players will have to showcase their talents. The event will take place February 24th-March 2nd.

Earlier in the week, Fooch wrote two different articles on both the Combine Drills and a list of Pro Days at particular schools and the respective dates attached to them. These are very informative and if you are somewhat unfamiliar with just how everything works, then it's definitely work taking a look. I want to take it just one step further and provide one more link in which Mike Mayock from NFL Network describes each event in depth through video. It is very detailed in how each event can effect a specific position and also very much worth a glance over.

The purpose of the article is to Preview the Combine (which the title obviously states) and to also take a look in to the history of the draft and certain players that it has helped and hurt. After that, I am going to break down the Top 10 players that have alot to gain at the combine and the top 10 players that have a lot to lose at the combine. Unfortunately, some of the players will not be participating in the events. The most notable are potentially the top 4 Quarterbacks (Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, and Jimmy Clausen). All four Quarterbacks will however take part in their respective schools Pro Days.

After the jump, I'll go in to some of the history behind the NFL Scouting Combine and after that provide a short summary of each player that has something to lose and something to gain through the events.

Star-divide

NFL SCOUTING COMBINE HISTORY

Commonly known as the NFL Scouting Combine, also known as or referenced as the (NIC), began in 1982. The purpose of this event has always remained the same. It has been used as a tool to measure the health, ability, and psychological capacity of players entering the NFL. The combine had short lived tours through Arizona and New Orleans in the early 80's before it found it's landing in Indianapolis. The NFL continues to evolve but the process has stayed relatively the same throughout the years. The very first NIC had 163 players participate and established itself firmly enough to stick around.

Through the course of the last 28 years, several players have catapulted their stock and others have watched their stock plummet. Some players have got to the next level after having bad outings at the combine and had excellent careers and others have had great combines and completely busted. Below, I'll provide a list of players on each side of the spectrum in the last 10 years or so.

Players that have had good combines and have not done well for the most part at the next level:

1. Peter Warrick WR (Florida State --Drafted by Cincinnati) [3rd Pick Overall in the 2000 Draft]

2. Jamal Reynolds DE (Florida State -- Drafted by Green Bay) [10th Pick Overall in the 2001 Draft]

3. Ashlie Lelie WR (Hawaii -- Drafted by Denver) [19th Pick Overall in the 2002 Draft]

4. DeWayne Robertson DT (Kentucky -- Drafted by New York Jets) [3rd Pick Overall in the 2003 Draft]

5. Reggie Williams WR (Washington -- Drafted by Jacksonville) [10th Pick Overall in the 2004 Draft]

6. Thomas Davis LB (Georgia -- Drafted by Carolina) [14th Pick Overall in the 2005 Draft]

7. Reggie Bush RB (USC -- Drafted by New Orleans) [2nd Pick Overall in the 2006 Draft]

8. LaRon Landry S (LSU -- Drafted by Washington) [6th Pick Overall in the 2007 Draft]

9. Darren McFadden RB (Arkansas -- Drafted by Oakland) [4th Pick Overall in the 2008 Draft]

10. Tyson Jackson DE (LSU -- Drafted by Kansas City) [3rd Pick Overall in the 2009 Draft]

Note: I realize that some of these players are still young and still have a chance to do well, these examples are more or less just to illustrate a point.

Players that have had bad combines and have done well for the most part at the next level:

1. Keith Bulluck LB (Syracuse -- Drafted by Tennessee) [30th Pick Overall in the 2000 Draft]

2. Adrian Wilson SS (North Carolina State -- Drafted by Arizona) [64th Pick Overall in the 2001 Draft]

3. Brian Westbrook RB (Villanova -- Drafted by Philadelphia) [91st Pick Overall in the 2002 Draft]

4. Anquan Boldin WR (Florida State -- Drafted by Arizona) [54th Pick Overall in the 2003 Draft]

5. Darnell Dockett DT (Florida State -- Drafted by Arizona) [64th Pick Overall in the 2004 Draft]

6. Justin Tuck DE (Notre Dame -- Drafted by New York Giants) [74th Pick Overall in the 2005 Draft]

7. Marcus McNeil OT (Auburn -- Drafted by San Diego) [50th Pick Overall in the 2006 Draft]

8. LaMarr Woodley DE/ LB (Michigan -- Drafted by Pittsburgh) [46th Pick Overall in the 2007 Draft]

9. Ray Rice RB (Rutgers -- Drafted by Baltimore) [55th Pick Overall in the 2008 Draft]

10. Shonn Greene RB (Iowa -- Drafted by New York Jets) [65th Pick Overall in the 2009 Draft]

I am listing all of these players from both scenarios of having a good combine vs a bad combine to illustrate that it is not an exact science to determine how a player will do at the next level. Simply to show that it is only a tool to measure a players ability. Also to show that sometimes the value placed on a player's head is not always their true value. Players like Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith (recently inducted in to the Hall of Fame) did not have good combines but still ended up being two of the best to ever set foot on a football field.

Here are lists of 5 players that have a lot to gain from the combine and 5 players that have just as much to lose from their performances at the combine.  After that I've listed out everybody invited to the Combine:

5 PLAYERS THAT HAVE A LOT TO GAIN FROM THE 2010 COMBINE:

1. Jason Pierre-Paul DE (S. Florida)

JPP only had one year of football at the NCAA level and the rest was played at the JUCO level. He will need to have an excellent combine to solidify a possible top 10 selection.

2. Chris Cook CB (Virginia)

Cook is a big, physical, speedy Corner that could also play Safety. This test of skill for Cook could place him higher than what he is currently projected at. He had a very good outing at the Senior Bowl and has everything to gain by a good outing at the combine.

3. Brandon Graham DE (Michigan)

Graham was a menace on the football field for most of the year and had himself a very good Senior Bowl earning the MVP honor for that game. For some reason he still is not getting as muc hype as he deserves. This will be a great opportunity for him to climb the ladder on the draft boards.

4. Mardy Gilyard WR (Cincinnati)

Gilyard, much like Graham had one heck of a year and just as good of a game at the Senior Bowl. The Combine will heavily impact the way he is viewed of those who may have their eyes on him.

5. Golden Tate WR (Notre Dame)

Tate's stock status has somewhat been in limbo. There is not a real clear picture just as to where Tate could be drafted. He has alot to gain here as well but not much of a fall if he doesn't do the best.

5 PLAYERS THAT HAVE A LOT TO LOSE FROM THE 2010 NFL COMBINE

1. Taylor Mays S (USC)

Mays has been widely criticized for this and that. Right now he is still projected as a 1st Rounder but should he have a bad combine could fall in to the top portion of the 2nd Round.

2. Trent Williams OT (Oklahoma)

Williams is another one of those guys whose stock is pretty high up there. If he fails at some of the agility drills, he could fall further than he currently has. He's taken shots by some of the critics for giving up that very first sack this year that led to Sam Bradford's injury. His performance here could impact the fall even more.

3. Joe Haden CB (Florida)

There are a couple Corners eagerly waiting to nab that 1st spot for Corners taken in this years draft. Haden and people surrounding him have pumped his stock through the roof. If he slips just a little, there are guys like Kyle Wilson, Patrick Robinson, and Devin McCourty breathing down his neck that could step in front of him.

4. Mike Iupati OL (Idaho)

Iupati received alot of hype Pre-Senior Bowl and was regarded very solidly as a potential first-round selection. While that still looks like the case, Iupati had a horrible week of practice before the Senior Bowl and if he messes up here could find himself being selected in the 2nd.

5. Dez Bryant WR (Oklahoma State)

Out of all players, Bryant probably has the most to lose. He has been out of football and will be questioned about his suspension and off field issues. Scouts will be interested to see just how rusty he is since he missed a majority of the year. Bryant could have the most to lose out of anyone in this years draft.

Here is the schedule of events set to take place throughout the week:

I don't recall that Bush ran or performed at the combine?

I thought that Bush did all of his stuff at the USC pro-day? That doesn’t mean to say that Bush didn’t do great at his pro-day, but the difference between pro-day and combine can often be significant (particularly since USC pro-days are so late in relation to the combine).

I think you may be right. I just remembered his results being pretty outstanding and for some reason just associated that with the combine. But all the drills are the same for the most part at a pro day and the combine. However, I think it still illustrates the point I was trying to make with that. Good catch though.

He was so overrated, it hurt.

did you really put 300 names down WT!!

But 4 real its a crap shoot anyway even the draft is a risk its more about the coaches then the players you can get the top college players under one roof or dome with out having 2 travel to 300 pro days coaches use it 2 cut players and make trades or future trades and you get 2 test the players mental side 2 .Its always going 2 be a risk when it comes to the combine but as a coach you put it together the combine and there college career and sometimes you have 2 through some of it out i just hate when quaterbacks go there and not throw its like buying a car 4 youre 14yr old kid and then park it in the driveway and tell him he can’t drive it until he’s 16 or 17 , why even show up they know coaches want 2 see them throw so you wait until you’re pro-day 2 thow 2 receivers you know well those receivers are not going with you 2 the team that drafts you so while you got all these coaches there show them that you’re not intemidated by recievers that you’re not familliar with you don’t here recievers saying i’m not going 2 run these routes with this quaterback who does’nt know me yea i know these quaterbacks go higher sometimes but who cares show these scouts that you are a gamer regardless who’s watching you throw.

I still can't believe that the guy who set the NCAA record for receptions in a single season

wasn’t invited to the combine.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

I know… and watch him turn out to be the next Jerry Rice too. He will probably be a steal for someone. I don’t think anyone from Bowling Green got an invite but their pro day is March 16th so he’ll at least have a chance to shine there.

Watch out for Jacoby Ford

NCAA record holder in the 60 meter (6.51 seconds) going after Chris Johnson’s 40 time. Could be a kick returner option for the niners in the 3rd round.

by kiyoshi on Feb 24, 2010 10:23 AM PST reply actions

Yeah he's definitely got some wheels

I think he might be even faster than Spiller, which would make him more valuable in the later rounds if for some reason we don’t get Spiller in the 1st.

by Mangoman on Feb 24, 2010 11:37 AM PST up reply actions

He is faster than Spiller but they both ran track for Clemson too

by Drew K on Feb 24, 2010 11:39 AM PST up reply actions

I'd be more interested to see his agility drills

With his track experience i’m sure he’ll run it pretty fast, but i want to see his ability to move in space as opposed to just a straight line and if he has the ability to make his cuts as a receiver without having to gear down

by HaloFanInDC on Feb 24, 2010 3:32 PM PST up reply actions

Not sure about his agility, but he got good reviews at the senior bowl

“Clemson WR Jacoby Ford clearly has established himself as the most polished receiver on the North roster. He runs precise routes and shows the acceleration to separate out of cuts. We also were impressed with his ability to escape jams, using his quickness to get cornerbacks to open their hips early.”

http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2010-01-27/senior-bowl-dish-ford-setting-himself-apart-brown-looking-strong

I think he’d be a great fit as a speedy slot receiver to give us that deep threat we are currently lacking and a kick returner. If we can get him in the 3rd I’d love to have him.

by kiyoshi on Feb 24, 2010 4:20 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah that's about where I see him going

His career return averages are quite impressive. Around 27 yards/return for kickoffs and 11 yards/return for punts.

by Mangoman on Feb 24, 2010 4:24 PM PST up reply actions

I saw him get handled by B. Ghee

He tried to outrun him, but Ghee was with him step for step.

Based solely on tangibles

It’s true.
Ghee is faster, bigger, and better against the run.

His instincts, work ethic, or football intelligence may or may not be better than Robinson’s but Ghee is one of (if not the) the most physically gifted CBs in the draft.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by chikmagnet_565 on Feb 24, 2010 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

Your opinion doesnt make it true. Tangibles? That must be why he’s projected lower than Robinson I guess???

Faster? I guess we’ll see this week. If he’s faster, I’d say it’s by less than half a step.

is one of (if not the) the most physically gifted CBs in the draft.

This coming form the same guy that thinks Taylor Mays is going to be a bust. I don’t think Ghee is going to be much more than an average Corner in the NFL. He’s forgetable.

The Tim Tebow Story "A Bust In The Making" ...Part 2 Coming After The Draft...Stay Tuned.

by Drew K on Feb 24, 2010 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

I think there's as much evidence

that Mays is going to be a bust (all hit, no wrap when tackling. Lack of big plays in college) as there is that he will be good (off the charts size and speed).

Mays seems to be a case of athletic ability v. football ability. Luckily for him you can learn how to play football, but you can’t learn how to be athletic.

Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.

by Yeti Monster on Feb 24, 2010 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

I had this discussion with a scout from an AFC north team

And he basically said it made the guy impossible to grade in his opinion. His athletic ability is about as high as he’s ever seen… But his football skills are unbelievably low for what an athlete he is.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Feb 24, 2010 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

I think the big plays issue is slightly overrated or at least misunderstood when it comes to Mays (and he did make some big plays…see his stop on Jahvid Best during the Cal game this year and tell me what other safety could have made that play).

I agree that he’s not a ballhawk ala Ed Reed, but then again either is Bob Sanders of the Colts and look at the impact that Sanders has. Add on the fact that a lot of times Mays wasn’t put into a position to make a whole lot of interceptions (i will concede he doesn’t have natural hands and needs to get out that jug machine and work) in USC’s defense (which was generally a bend, but don’t break style of defense during the PC era) and an argument can be made that there are reasons why he wasn’t making Eric Berry like plays (even note that Berry’s int’s and stats dropped this year in Kiffin’s Tampa 2 [a defense similar to what SC ran with PC]).

In terms of tackling, I think that’s something that can be corrected by the coaches. In a recent interview Mays stated that he was coached to go for the big hit at SC and I think he’d be able to adjust under proper coaching.

All that said i don’t think Mays will be a bust. He might not be the top-10 prospect that he was made out to be during his junior season, but i still think he’ll definitely be a good starting SS somewhere and worth a first round pick

by HaloFanInDC on Feb 24, 2010 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

You bring up good points, but some of the scouting reports I’ve read speak to his inability to cover and his terrible pursuit angles. That is all stuff players are taught in high school.

And with regard to the “big plays” argument, any team drafting a first round safety will want more than one pick between his junior and senior year.

As for the Sanders comp, do you really think Mays will be able to support the run as well as Sanders does when healthy? Also, Sanders had more picks (7-5), FF (13-1), and sacks (4-0) at Iowa than Mays has at USC, and Sanders’ lack of playmaking ability (and size concerns) dropped him to the second round (#44 pick overall).

I’m not going to argue that Mays shouldn’t be selected in the first round; I just hope it’s not the Niners who pick him. I don’t think the reward is worth the risk.

Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.

saw

jacoby ford on first take they said he ran a 4.1 in high school damm that’s fast wonder what he’s doing now got money its now higher than 4.3

by jayjonna415 on Feb 24, 2010 1:29 PM PST reply actions

Yah he run a 4.1

hand timed at his high school combine. A real 4.1 translates to a 9.2 or so hundred meters.

A hand timed start can reasonably be as much as .3 off if the clock man starts late and finishes early. A reasonable amount to add to his 4.126 would be about .15. Making his time 4.276 which is a very possible time for the speed demon.

Gimme 1 round!

But remember that the Indy track tends to run pretty slow

I wouldn’t be surprise however if he put up a low 4.3 or sub 4.3 at this pro day when he’ll probably run it on a track with track shoes and with the wind
