Free Agency Moves Thread 2 (Updated: 3/3/2010)

Because you asked so nicely DrewK here's the new stuff.

Now that the off-season is upon us free agency will be heating up big time. Players will be getting franchised, some will be extended and others cut. If you hear of any big signings or releases add them here in a comment and I'll update the thread. Try to keep any discussion of free agency moves (trades, signigns, etc.) here. Rec it up so we can keep the conversation going.

Team sources have said they're prepared to let Dansby test free agent market

The two big events that may not have been picked up

Olindo Mare being franchised by the Seahawks, and the rumor (appears fairly solid) that Thomas Jones may be cut by the Jets.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

I saw that you had Nick Folk being cut, but I think I may have heard today that he got signed somewhere fairly quick.

I thought I had that up there

he signed with the Jets

I guess I missed that.

Anyhow, you’re right… free agency is about to go bananas here in a week in a half or so. And some of the vets are going to start getting chopped now that LT and Westbrook got cut. They were the valve in opening the flood gates. The guillotine is out for FO’s and heads are going to roll here pretty fast. I have a feeling that some of them are going to be left jobless because of this whole CBA situation.

When will we know if the Saints tender Brown and/or Bushrod I really want one of them.

I'm assuming within the next week or so

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

Do you think the 49ers will want to sign the one who is released? If one is released?

"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"

by Eastbayjim on Feb 24, 2010 10:06 PM PST up reply actions

I hope so

I’d love to get Bushrod at LT and move Staley over to RT or vice versa. Brown is a fantastic guard and would be an upgrade to Baas (or at least push Baas to get better).

Bushrod signed a 3 year deal in 2007 for $1.5 million—$500k a year. Now the Saints might just see if they can trade him before releasing him completely though.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

I thought they both played RT

by manraj7 on Feb 24, 2010 10:30 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

You're right

Don’t know why I got that mixed up.

With the offer to Strief it really looks like the Saints are ready to shop one of the two.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Feb 24, 2010 10:33 PM PST up reply actions

If they don’t tender one then we are free to get him without give up a pick. If we can get one then we can draft Iupati with our 1b and trade our 2nd and our 1a for Berry.

Oh man I’m excited to see what the Saints do with those guys.

by manraj7 on Feb 24, 2010 10:42 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah it will be very interesting for sure

especially since neither of them will command huge prices either.

My Ideal Off-season signings/trades

1. sign G- Ben Hamilton

2. Sign LB- Travis Laboy

3. Sign LB- Joey Porter

4. Sign S- Sean Jones

5. Sign WR- Terrell Owens

6. Re-sign NT- Aubrayo Franklin

7. Re-sign LB- Matt Wilhelm

8. Re-sign OL- Tony Pashos

9. Re-sign OL- Barry Sims

"Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. Can't do it. I want winners. I want people that want to win!!!"

No way in hades on TO

He would be destructive to the well being of the offense and can you imagine his reaction to smith? I agree on resigning Pashos for sure and maybe Sims as an insurance policy. I don’t feel going after Porter is a viable option too much money and such. Sean Jones is interesting. I like Ben Hamilton as well and also keeping an eye on Saints as has already been spoken of here.

5. Sign WR- Terrell Owens

by sundaysfinest on Feb 24, 2010 11:54 PM PST reply actions

Wishful thinking?

Why not go after Dunta Robinson and Leigh Bodden? Do you guys think that either one of them is over-rated? Too pricey? I’m sure that Eddie would pull the trigger on this and still find a way to draft Eric Berry!

Me to

But my dream was to get a good RT in FA.

by manraj7 on Feb 25, 2010 7:35 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

He's 25 years old

that means you could probably get him for like 5 years sign a 6 year contract maybe? And give up a second and then move down the 16/17 and if we lose out on Spiller at 13 move that one down too. We could get their 1 and 53 for our 1. That’s essentially our second back. We could possiprobably pick up Bey Bey there. With our firsts we could pick up guys like Iupati, Pouncey, Odrick, Thomas, McCourty, Robinson. It’d be dim sum just take any two. (That’s if we didn’t get Spiller at 13 and moved down both our picks remember) If Thomas wasn’t one of the picks then we could probably get Reshad Jones, or Morgan Burnett with one of our 3rd round picks. With the other 3rd rounder we could get players like McKnight as a poor man’s Spiller (not really), Mike Johnson at G, Price if we didn’t get Bey Bey, Veldheer and play him at G for a bit with possibility of being one of ourTackles of the future, Gilyard, Ghee etc. Then still in the 4th we’ve got a chance at another good WR in Ford or Barnes if he starts getting hot..the list goes on.

I would imagine if we actually did that (a second for Bushrod) we’d open up our possibilities immensely and know we have a young solid OT that can play RT for sure and maybe even end up being LT depending how he does.

I’ll hush up now LOL cuz McC probably wouldn’t do that and I probably ticked off a lot of people with the not getting Spiller talk. :-)

Yep and Skins need

a replacement for Portis. Yes we all know the Shanny/Bronco way that you can take a guy in a wheelchair in his O and have him break 1,000 but I would still say it’s possible. Heard some talk on the radio about Cleveland as a possibility. Oakland since he’ll be among the fastest in the draft but even Al doesn’t want to stock pile that many RB’s does he? None are a surety but he is going to be a hot commodity.

Al has blew enough money in the first round to justify not takng Spiller.

I don’t think the skins take a RB at no. 4, when you have Shanahan and his scheme. Dolphins, maybe, but Parcells taking a BR in the first, I doubt it. I can’t see any team wanting to draft him in the top 12, except Cleveland, but not at 7.

If we trade back from our first pick with the saints its actually a higher value than our second round pick. then we would still have 2 first rounders, but one would be at the end of the first round and our 2nd round pick. with our RT need met we can go BPA at all 3 picks. It would hurt our chances of getting spiller, but I think it would be a good trade overall.

by hellaninersfan on Feb 26, 2010 4:22 PM PST up reply actions

lemme see if I follow you

So you’re saying get Bushrod by trading our 13 for their 31? That’s a move of 560 points according to the trade chart. Now I’m not sure what can be used to value a current player against picks but if they gave up every pick they have they’d still owe us a 3rd rounder to move that far up in the first round. So I guess I’m just feeling we should get more than that for the trade. Would it be also a 2nd and a 3rd or just a 3rd and a 4th?

Hmm would you (saying to the group in general) be happy to get Bushrod, a 3rd and a 4th for our 13 (and their 1st rounder)? Maybe Brown I can see but seems a bit high of a price to pay for him. There seems to be something missing. The deal could be made I just feel we’re leaving a good bit on the table. Maybe I’m undervaluing Bushrod or maybe overvaluing our picks.

it has some viability though.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Feb 26, 2010 5:46 PM PST up reply actions

they’re 32. If bushrod or Brown go a 2nd round tender they can be assumed to be worth a 2nd round pick. maybe we would be owed a 3rd round in addition, but I would be OK with overpaying for one of those guys.

by hellaninersfan on Mar 1, 2010 9:00 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah

but RFA offers aren’t tags.

any player who reaches the end of his contract but hasn’t had at least 4 seasons in the league in a capped year, or 6 in an uncapped year is considered a restricted free agent.

Question: Why Sproles and not Spiller?

My response: First, Sproles is a free agent; Spiller is not. Second, Spiller would require a first-round draft pick; Sproles would not. Third, if you’re going to take a RB at No. 13, he better be an every-down back; the 49ers already have their every-down back. Lastly, even if the 49ers were willing to spend a first-round pick on a return specialist, there is no guarantee they’d get him in the draft. Then what? The 49ers would have an opportunity to erase a need before the draft even rolls around. —Matt M.

If anybody should be giving up a pick in that deal it is Washington, not Buffalo, and a higher pick at that. Whitner has been a real good safety for Buffalo and Campbell has amounted to pretty much nothing for Washington.

Regarding Owens, well that is not too surprising. I am still thinking about the 49ers bringing him in to end his career and be the #2 behind Crabs. Owens has matured quite a bit over the last couple of seasons and, dare i say it could be a good influence on Crabtree, at least in terms of football.

Agreed

but still don’t think he is worth a 2nd rounder AND a FAT contract which is what you would be paying him. You are going to have to offer him a large enough contract, that even the Jets, who know him, and what he brings to the team, won’t want to match it. To me, that means you stay away from him.

I thought he was looking for $7 million or something?

He wanted to be paid like a #1 back if I remember right. Maybe his stance has softened a bit but I doubt it. Once a guy wants to get paid, and has got a figure in his head, that’s what he wants regardless.

Yeah he was looking for that kind of money

ain’t nobody in the league going to do it though

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Mar 4, 2010 3:43 PM PST up reply actions

I agree,

but we HAVE to offer him a contract that the Jet’s won’t match. Jet’s already offered him $4.5 so we will probably be in the $5+ million range, AND giving up a 2nd round pick. I’d rather Spiller for that at less money #17. Or ANYONE in 2nd or 3rd round for a FRACTION of that.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Feb 28, 2010 11:49 AM PST reply actions

Dont know…

Depends on the contract and all that. Reasons for letting LT go: Age, Money.

I think they just want to get younger at the position. Not saying it can’t happen cause Jones did have the best season of his career with 1400+ yards rushing. I think he may go back to Chicago. I think Chicago is going to pick up one of those guys; Jones; Tomlinson; possibly even Jamal Lewis.

Here is what ESPN Scouts Inc says

Rolle made the switch from cornerback to free safety. He has very good size and straight-line speed. He does a good job of reading routes and reacting to the QB. He takes good angles to the ball and has good hands to make plays. He is a playmaker who can score at will and routinely makes the most of his opportunities returning interceptions. He can be physical in run support and shows the willingness to insert himself when needed against the run. Overall, he has good upside for the position. He should only get better as he gains experience and confidence.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Feb 28, 2010 2:06 PM PST up reply actions

Doesn't sound like he lacks range to me

4.49 is not exactly slow for a safety. Michael Lewis probably runs a 6.49, LOL.

What the hell is going on in AZ?

All their players with name recongnization are either retiring or being let go. I love what’s going on down there but has their “dynasty” last only 2 years? Are they going to have another 50 years of futility? Yes.

They renewed the coach’s, GM’s contracts but they are going to lose basically all their Defences starters. Berry retired, Dansby is going to greener pastures, Rolle is leaving, what else do they have? Now that Warner is gone their offense will stagnate. I’m guessing they win 6 games this season.

DRC and Wilson

They’re still back in their secondary which might amount to something for their D considering they’ll lose a majority of their pass rushers and LBs.
But then again Asomugha and Huff/Mitchell are still back in the Raiders secondary and they, with a much more complete LB/DL core than the Cards, are a pretty abysmal defense.
I think it will be terrible in AZ for a few years. The spurt of excellence, the Super Bowl, I guess it was worth it for fans who had endured so much futility.

that the FInal 8 teams are not allowed to pursue unrestricted free agents, but everybody else is fair game. So if I’m reading that response right basically RFAs who aren’t tendered are still RFAs. Since they’re not technically UFAs that means they can be pursued by Final 8 teams.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Mar 3, 2010 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

As far as I have seen, if a 1st round tender is placed, then all that is needed to meet that is 1 pick unless stated otherwise. That is why teams are pairing picks in the tenders: example- 1st rounder and 3rd rounder, or whatever the specific scenario is.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

by Drew Kerr on Mar 3, 2010 10:05 PM PST up reply actions

They're pairing it because of the structure set up by the NFL

It’s based on a bunch of things including how long the player has been in the league.

For players with four accrued seasons

1.) First and Third Round (highest tender). Dollar amount $3.168 million
2.) First Round $2.521 million
3.) Second Round $1.759 million
4.) Original Pick $1.176 million

For players with three accrued seasons
1.) First and Third Round $3.268 million
2.) First Round $2.621 million
3.) Second Round $1.809 million
4.) Original Pick $1.226 million

Finally there’s a class of restricted free agents called Exclusive Free Agents. These are players that only have two accrued seasons and are at the end of their contracts. A team can offer these players the minimum salary of a 3rd year player and they retain his rights.

Of course on top of all this teams have to make sure that the offer they give a player is at least 10% higher than their 2009 salary.

by smileyman on Mar 3, 2010 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

So I don’t get why you said above that we would have to give up our 13th and 17th then. And any other deal would have to include a future 1st on top of a current one. Is that for franchise tagged players only? Or did you mess up?

A 3rd Round Pick For Bolden?

Has Arizona completely lost it?

1. Kurt Warner retires (no fault of their own)
2. Release Antrel Rolle
3. Going to trade Anquan Bolden for 3rd round pick
4. Going to let Karlos Dansby walk

These are 4 of their most talented players leaving for nothing more than a 3rd round pick, unless they do something huge in the off-season Arizona is going to be battling the Rams for the division cellar, well that may be a little dramatic, but they are going to be nowhere near the level of the 49ers.

Boldin most likely won’t be a Cardinal next year. They don’t want to give him a new deal for some reason. Which is a crying shame for all that he has done for that franchise. What other player in the NFL has his face broken cause his QB hung him up to dry and comes back to play 3 weeks later? Cards ownership deserves to be a losing franchise again IMO

Considering he was a 3rd round pick can the Rams offer a lower tender under the rules? I am not entirely sure on that one

If it is indeed a 3rd round tender, it appears the Rams do not want to re-sign him. I think a 5Y-30MD Contract could get it done, while only losing a 3rd round pick.

Rams did that...

so they wouldn’t have to offer him an increase over his Franchise # last year. It’s a smart move, doesn’t mean they won’t resign him. If anything, Atogwe will get multiple offers, Rams will be able to gauge his market, and resign him, or not. But it’s not because they don’t want him. Anything higher than lowest tender cost them a ton of money because he was Franchised last year.

The rams deal won’t go through. 33rd pick for a 1 year contract dump? I’m sure the rams would want some sort of 3-4 year commitment and I doubt McNabb signs off on it.

Washington I suspect will be back with the Jets. The compensation was just enough to get teams to bite and make an offer, but low enough for the Jets to match without setting the market themselves (similar with sproles and SD).

MORE INFORMATION

Carlos Rogers wants out of Washington link , despite the 1st round tender teams are said to be interested, besides Washington could trade him for a later pick (2nd round) if he really wants out

Antonio Cromartie to the Jets link

Lito Sheppard released link , would he be an upgrade over Bly?

Don’t expect a free agent flurry from the 49ers link , i wonder if that is a good or bad thing; we could address some needs in free agency while still building through the draft

On another note, could the Cardinals even refuse a 2nd round pick from the 49ers if they offered it for Bolden? I am just throwing that out there. link

No Free agent flurry as exzpected. I would offer the Bears a 3rd for Harris if they want to cut him.

I also would pursue dunta Robinson if the price is right. Then all you need on D is a safety and the rest of the draft can be all offense.

True

but Chris Samuels just retired and they are going to have to beef up their Oline too, possibly Running back and WR’s too. They have other guys departing on top of all that I assume. Not saying it wont happen because with “Wildcard” Dan Snyder, you never know and anything is possible. But he may have to address other areas of the team.
