100 in 100: Golden Tate (23 of 100)

Tate was a two-sport college athlete for The Fighting Irish. He played Wide Receiver for the football team and Center Field for the baseball team. After Head Football Coach Charlie Weis resigned, both Tate and Quarterback Jimmy Clausen declared for the NFL Draft which is being held on April 22nd-24th at Radio Music Hall in  New York City. Tate could very well find himself being drafted on Day 1, but if not, he is a shoe in for a Day 2 selection.

Tate's Sophomore and Junior Season's were by and far his most productive. He didn't get much of a chance his Freshman season and only had 6 Catches. Tate is a multi-facet talent that can hurt the opposition in multiple areas. He is a true athlete and will benefit a team in a few different areas which makes him somewhat of a commodity.

Below, we'll look at Tate's Highlights, Stats, Awards and Honors, and Projections

Star-divide

Tate in this video demonstrates multiple times why he will be a relatively high draft pick. He has exceptional hands and makes some very athletic plays on offense as well as special teams.

SUMMARY AND PROJECTIONS:

Golden Tate, as mentioned above should be selected in the second half of the first round. There are a few teams that will heavily consider Tate as their very first selection. He is a game changer and has the potential to be a "pro-bowl" caliber player.

Possibilities -- 1st Round Teams; Bengals, Ravens, Cowboys, Chargers, Jets

That's a pretty impressive resume

Although I think the team has much bigger needs and I wonder if he fits McC’s profile of a Wide Receiver (I haven’t heard anything about this guy’s blocking), Tate would be a pretty solid option in the 2nd round. Anybody know about whether he returns kicks/punts?

I like him and his open field running ability

He kinda reminds me of Battle, honestly, if Battle had actually played WR in college and had a little more speed.

However, if he doesn’t learn to stop running into would-be tacklers completely upright, he’s gonna get destroyed in the NFL. It may work in college for you kid but some linebacker or safety’s gonna really open your eyes during training camp…

by foosball4949 on Feb 3, 2010 1:41 PM PST reply actions

I'd like him in the 2nd-3rd

but I don’t think he’ll last past the second. He’s a good returner but depending on what we take in the 1st we may not be able to use our second on him

by foosball4949 on Feb 3, 2010 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

totally with you with the Battle comment.

Although I don’t know about Tate’s ability to muff punts. Battle was off the charts in that department.

I'll wait for the combine to confirm this..

But I think Tate is a terrible route runner. He might have the natural football instincts to feel out the soft spots in a zone, but in the NFL I don’t see him getting open as a #1 nor #2 receiver. He’s really going to have to work on getting separation in man to man coverage before I’d want him on either of the 1st 2 days.

...and he's 5-11

Seems a little short by today’s WR standards.
He has great feet though, I can see him being an effective 3rd down back and return specialist- with some work in the slot as well.

This

His routes are very sloppy.

Would be an incredible PR

He’s quick with great hands and a really good instinct for finding the ball and the endzone. But I don’t know if we use a high pick for someone who would basically be a one-dimensional player for us for the foreseeable future. Spiller is a more viable pick for not just his kick returning ability but for the versatility of the running game that we don’t necessarily have right now.

by Mangoman on Feb 3, 2010 2:29 PM PST reply actions

Tate is sick

He looks like Hines Ward with better quicks. I guaranty this kid is a winner and will be some team’s #1 WR in a year or two. While he’s not tall, he is real strong, he high-points the ball, and looks like the best receiver after the catch in the draft. And for the record, I don’t like ND. If he’s there in the 2nd, we HAVE to take him

by jsteez on Feb 3, 2010 3:10 PM PST reply actions

like Hines Ward

Yeah except for the physicality and size. Of course that’s really all Ward has, so…

Jason Hill is turning the corner!

by grantmp on Feb 3, 2010 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

I'd love him in the 2nd...

but I doubt he’ll be there. His route aren’t great, his top-end speed isn’t the best and he is undersized. With that said, I think he has great hands, he moves well with the ball and he seems to be fearless when going over the middle. He can return kicks and punts and his name is perfect for our team… Golden.

by return2greatness on Feb 3, 2010 3:18 PM PST reply actions

BTW

That Clausen kid ain’t too bad either. I was thinking when I was looking at the highlights that Golden’s QB does a decent bit to help him look good.

by Mangoman on Feb 3, 2010 4:03 PM PST reply actions

Apparently some people think he has terrible mechanics

I think he’ll be a great player in the NFL.

For the love Arnaz Battle I cannot do it

We’re just about to exterminate that cockroach and someone is advocating bringing in version 2.0. Just say No to exotic named Golden Domer receivers. BTW, I know Battle played QB.

I have a strict rule about Notre Dame prospects. The common named ones you keep, strangely named ones you throw away. For example Tim Brown (Excellent), Raghib Ismail (Very Bad). That’s the two ends of the spectrum, you can figure out the rest.

No he's not

His lack of speed is a major concern.

I'll wait for the combine and see how he does

but right now I would want the Niners to trade down their 2nd first round pick for him and an extra pick.

I really think he is going to be special in the NFL and would hate to see him go to another team. I know there are some criticisms but we’ll see what comes out of the combine.

by snowweasel30 on Feb 3, 2010 9:05 PM PST reply actions

Tate is solid

…too bad the niners need OL

by swerv on Feb 3, 2010 10:43 PM PST reply actions

I'd take him....

as our return man and third receiver in the second round over Spiller in the first if we could get Clausen and an OT in the 1st. Otherwise, it’s Spiller and this guy doesn’t even get consideration.

by 9thevolution on Feb 4, 2010 7:40 AM PST reply actions

Umm..

Why would we draft Clausen? To ruin Smith’s just-recently-restored confidence? Who are you… Mike Nolan?

by return2greatness on Feb 4, 2010 8:48 AM PST up reply actions

NOT HIS FRAGILE CONFIDENCE! WON’T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Feb 4, 2010 12:19 PM PST up reply actions

seriously. If dude can’t deal with competition he’s in the wrong line of work

by microwave donut on Feb 4, 2010 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

no

It’s not about competition. It’s about his confidence. Anyone who is a 9ers fan knows how much Nolan played Smith. You can’t deny it. When your HC is throwing you under the bus to the media and basically calling you a pussy to your whole locker room, your confidence is going to be destroyed no matter who you are. It takes time to build that back up and Alex is finally at that point. To sign a veteran FA would be horrible and drafting another 1st round QB would be a waste of a pick. Suppose they draft Clausen and he is worse then Smith. Then what? Why wouldn’t you give Smith another year under Raye with Davis waiting in the wings?

Why buy the cow, when you get the sex for free?

by return2greatness on Feb 4, 2010 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

What is Clausen gonna do to ruin his confidence? Write him nasty letters? Dude would be brought in to compete.

by microwave donut on Feb 4, 2010 4:46 PM PST up reply actions

You can't read between the lines my main man?

It’s not Clausen that would destroy his confidence it’s the fact that a high draft pick has been spent on another QB after Sing said Smith is the starter. This whole conversation is a waste of energy because there is no way they draft a QB in the 1st round.

Why buy the cow, when you get the sex for free?

by return2greatness on Feb 5, 2010 6:26 AM PST up reply actions

That's ridiculous

Why wouldn’t they draft a 1st round QB if he’s good. Clausen is one of the highest rated players OVERALL. He’s gonna be good and doesn’t have to start right away. Hell, if he’s better than Smith right out of the door, then let Smith ride the bench. Smith was Nolan’s choice, and while I’m remaining hopeful because I feel sorry for the guy, I won’t hold my breath. Niners need a real QB and I don’t think Davis is the answer. Anyone who does is investing too much stock in him.

by 9thevolution on Feb 5, 2010 6:43 AM PST up reply actions

Umm...

Maybe because Clausen is a better QB than Smith??? That would be a pretty good reason for drafting him. Can I also remind you that Singletary has blatantly said he’ll jump for a better option if it presents itself.

by 9thevolution on Feb 4, 2010 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

Clausen better?

How do you know? Did he have a better college carrer? Has he performed better in the NFL? Oh.. wait i know. Cause he went to ND right? Here’s to Brady Quinn.

by return2greatness on Feb 4, 2010 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

The Brady Quinn argument?

FAIL.

Charlie Weis didn’t even recruit Quinn.
And Clausen was MUCH better than Quinn at the college level.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by chikmagnet_565 on Feb 4, 2010 1:56 PM PST up reply actions

Is that right???

Quinn – 772 (comp) 1270 (att) 9931 (yds) 86 (TD) 24 (INT)

Clausen – 695 (comp) 1110 (att) 8148 (yds) 60 (TD) 27 (INT)

So how did Clausen have a MUCH better college career again?

Why buy the cow, when you get the sex for free?

by return2greatness on Feb 4, 2010 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

No kidding man

Just because Brady is bad and he went to ND automatically makes Clausen bad?? I guess that makes Mr. Montana that much more of a legend.

by Mangoman on Feb 4, 2010 2:46 PM PST up reply actions

No

That’s not what I was saying. My argument was that you can’t automatically assume that Clausen will be good. Quinn had a better college career and look where that got him. Matt Leinart, if he would have come out in 2005 would have been the first pick I’m sure.. And what has he done?

There is no basis of comparison to say that Clausen is a better QB then Smith.. none. THAT was my argument.

Why buy the cow, when you get the sex for free?

by return2greatness on Feb 4, 2010 3:16 PM PST up reply actions

OK you're right, there is no obvious comparison

Only because Clausen hasn’t played on the pro level yet. I presumed you were inferring Clausen will be a bad NFL QB only because Brady is bad.

However, as far as I can see no one actually said Clausen is better than Alex because he went to ND.

by Mangoman on Feb 4, 2010 5:43 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

That was me being sarcastic… it’s unfortunate that sacrasim can’t be displayed through text.

Of course ND doesn’t make a QB bad, I was simply asking why 9thevolution said Clausen was better then Alex when he had no argument.

Why buy the cow, when you get the sex for free?

by return2greatness on Feb 5, 2010 6:28 AM PST up reply actions

ok

You’re right that there is no evidence that he’s going to be better, but I don’t think it’s worth the opportunity to pass on a franchise QB if he’s there. Smith was lucky to be picked 1st because Nolan had no idea what he was doing. To make it worse, Nolan traded the top veteran QB we had and threw an unprepared kid to the lions as a rookie. Clausen is more NFL ready than Smith was and I believe he’ll be better in the long run.

by 9thevolution on Feb 5, 2010 6:48 AM PST up reply actions

Now THAT...

is a valid argument and honestly… I wouldn’t be mad if they drafted Clausen. If Alex plays well next year then we have a potential Brees/Rivers dillema on our hands. I can’t be mad at that.

Why buy the cow, when you get the sex for free?
