What to do with Walt Harris?
I was reading an article online, and they were talking about Walt Harris. It totally just stopped me for a second, because I forgot we even had Walt Harris. He lost some speed, along with the injury it won't help him. But he was a pro bowler just 2 seasons ago, and is a decent cornerback. I've always liked Walt Harris because he is a good veteran, and it provides us with another option at cornerback. But, as I said, he has lost some speed and his first step isn't as great as it used to be. What can we do with Walt Harris, trade him, keep him, cut him? He recently said he would like to return to the niners and is eager to return, but he doesn't know what our organization is thinking, because our secondary needs to get better and faster. Maybe he would have helped this year, in an ESPN NFC West blog update Mike Sando reported, "Harris said it was tough watching games last season. The 49ers' defeat at Minnesota was particularly painful for him. Harris said he thought that defeat had a draining effect on the team and that beating the Vikings might have been pivotal." He's a smart corner, and maybe he can still cover some recievers, but he is getting old.
Plus, his opinion on Alex Smith: "Without prompting, Harris said he thought Alex Smith made strides last season, both in production and becoming more comfortable. He's hopeful Smith can continue to progress because it's so tough to win without strong play from that position."
Thoughts?

Harris
Good timing, as tomorrow’s long look back post is about the cornerbacks (but more about Clements and Tarell Brown).
As for Harris, I think he’s definitely talented, and might even be able to bounce back completely from the ACL tear. However, how much upside is there from him at this point, as compared to going younger?
I say let him go. That injury at that age, is unfortunate, and I think moving forward without him is the way to go.

not even as a player to only come in on nickel and dime packages?

Maybe, but I'd rather make room for a rookie and keep Bly for the Nickel. He was easily our best player at corner and definitely a better option than Harris, IMO.

He blew out his knee, and he was getting toasted in the last season he played. he is nearing mid 30's and blew a knee and was never a speed demon.

He actually was adequately fast
in 2007 (?) he was good.

In 08, he wasn't, I think he was lucky, and Bly makes more plays.

I wasn't trying to say that he's still good.

2007 Fun Fact
He was in the fastest man competition at the Pro Bowl

Check Him Out
It doesn’t hurt to bring him in and check him out before you dump him..If he is recovered and can still run a good 40, why not..If its even, he has to go with his age..
I think he'd be worth keeping as an extra DB in our nickle and dime packages
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.
I agree
to check him out, but that injury usually takes 2 years to come back from. Unless the IR is the new fountain of youth, I would doubt he would be helpful.

I also agree
He’s not over the hill yet ! he’s 30, but ended up 3rd in tackles with 82. He’s not an incepter but a good tackler. In his last 4 games, he had 21 tackles, very good stats. At the very least, a good backup. Better than some who remain on the roster and did nothing.
Do I have to mention names ?

Duh ?
Got the wrong guy. I wasn’t talking about Harris but M. Lewis.
My Mistake. Sleepy brain here.
Had a decent career, but may be near his retirement.

We don't know
how the injury affected him. He might be still starter-worthy or he might be a has-been. Only training camp and preseason will tell us what the team has.
This
Let’s wait and see. He was really good before, if he can return to that exact form, then he will be worth keeping.

"REALLY GOOD"
I think that is an over statement. He was beat a lot in his last season, QB’s typically bailed him out with bad throws.

He is a Pro Bowler

or former… anyhow… you have to be really good to get there…

He broke his hand in the first Quarter of one of them… I think it was ’06 or ’07…and I think he may have been to more than just one also when he was with the Bears.

Walt Harris?
I never really thought he was good at CB. He got toasted 99.9 percent of the time in man coverage. He made most of his interceptions in the cover 2. He’s good underneath, but man to man he cannot stick anyone in the league.
Even at Safety he would be another Mark Roman type.(Slow) but a solid tackler. What is he 37 now? It’s unlikely he got faster in the last year. I say give him a look in camp, he deserves that at least. However if he doesn’t look like a go, give him an honorable discharge…There’s another 37 year old X-49er I’d like to see in RED and Gold this summer…Guess who? Yup T.O. Let him retire a Niner. He would instanly boost our offense, and give Alex Smith a wonderful target, as he did for McNabb. Alex Smith looks downfield on the run the same way McNabb does….Peace…Stelf Bombz
bring him to camp
We need veterans in camp and competiton is good

Move Him To Safety In Nickel Packages
I see no reason why the 49ers would keep Roman over Harris. Although Walt Harris has yet to play Safety in the NFL, he did a little bit in college. Besides, Cory Chavous and Rod Woodson both converted to safety later in their careers and did pretty darn good. I think having the 3 backup safeties being Reggie Smith, Walt Harris and Curtis Taylor would be pretty good.

Clements got so much heat for getting torched by Moss and it was Harris that whiffed on coverage and let that TD come so easy
No on Safety, IMO.
