Should the 49ers pick Colt McCoy with their 3rd pick if he's available?
Since the NFL is a QB driven league , Should the 49ers think about drafting another QB? And if you do,Do you think that Colt McCoy is that QB, And if not Colt McCoy, What QB other then Nate Davis? That you would like to see the 49ers draft are trade for , Are maybe pick up a veteran free agent? I don't believe that Alex Smith is the answer, And i would rather have Nate Davis and another young QB coming up in the next 2yrs, As the 49ers next starting QB

Doesn’t say that…havent heard it. He looked fine yesterday in the college skills challenge and probably had the best performance in the Senior Bowl out of any QB. That was a massive hit but he is obviously fine now

Me either..
did you see McCoy getting injured in the early 1st quarter against Alabama Tides? Who wants another injured quarterback like Alex Smith was?
I rather have a fresh bodied quarterback who is injury free and can perform effortlessly.
FYI
He played injury free for four years previous to that. He got destroyed by Ndamukong Suh and he managed to stay healthy after being thrown around like a dog toy. Injury is not a good arguement to dislike McCoy.

Forget McCoy.....
By the time we get our #3 pick….he’ll be gone. So if I had to choose….I’d take either Tony Pike of Cincinnati or Mike Kafka of Northwestern. Besides…McCoy is another one of those “Spread Option” QB’s and recent history tells us……they don’t pan out that well in the pros.

Most college QB's are nowadays
A majority of college teams run “spread”… that’s pretty much how it is. There aren’t a ton of colleges that dont run it. There’s a few Pac 10 Teams that run Pro style, Notre Dame, and a couple Big Ten teams. Other than that, it’s pretty much the standard.
The Tim Tebow Story "A Bust In The Making" ...Part 2 Coming After The Draft...Stay Tuned.

Going to have to trade up for either one of those guys and Clausen would be the least likely I’d consider it for.
Notre Dame may even go to a “spread” now too since they just got Cincy’s coach.

I’m not quite sure why Locker’s stock was so high this year. He played well for being on a pretty terrible team, and he has good size and plays in a pro system… but he still wasn’t all that great.
I think he’s hurting his draft stock by going back to school. That is, unless he has a pretty awesome year next year. Which he might. That program is getting better, and it could end up working out really well for him.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Feb 8, 2010 6:11 PM PST up reply actions
the reason his stock was so high was that his team was terrible, but he still put up decent numbers and showed up in a big way against USC. He looks really good on film, accuracy, mechanics etc.
by hellaninersfan on Feb 8, 2010 7:22 PM PST up reply actions
He showed up against USC, sure, but he failed to show up in plenty of other high profile games that season. His numbers were decent for playing on a terrible team, but still pretty meh overall. I mean, he was basically on par with Kevin Riley (strictly stats-wise), and Kevin Riley was a steaming pile of trash last season.
I don’t know. I think he got way too much credit for looking good in one measly game, and isn’t being looked at critically enough for not being all that good in some of the other high profile games he played last year. He’s a fine prospect, but I don’t think his play was anywhere near in-line with his hype.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Feb 8, 2010 7:33 PM PST up reply actions
I don't know
I thought he had some other good games. The final results weren’t a “W” but he played good in a lot a few more games than people want to give him credit for. For instance, he almost lead them in the first game of the year to an upset against LSU who was ranked 11th in the Nation. He also carved up Cal at the end of the year who was ranked 19th in the Nation. Cal was without Jahvid Best, but none the less, Locker took care of business. I think that he has great leadership and the intangibles match the tangibles quite well. Besides, had he come out this year, who would have been a better prospect? Clausen? McCoy? Bradford? Clausen has a strange throwing motion; looks almost like he is throwing a baseball pitch. And Bradford and McCoy aren’t used to taking snaps under center and as far as skills, aren’t quite as polished as Locker. I don’t think it’s “hype” unless you are talking about guys like Tim Tebow and players similar to that. I think Locker was the best QB in college football this year. I can’t think of a better individual talent at the position. And I am not solely speaking on stats alone when I make the statement. Next season will be telling as if it was hype or if he is the real deal though. If he flops or get’s injured, Freshman Nick Montana will be his back up, so that should be interesting. He should see some mop up time hopefully.
The Tim Tebow Story "A Bust In The Making" ...Part 2 Coming After The Draft...Stay Tuned.
I was avoiding mentioning the Cal game for personal reasons… :/
I think my main point was that he had a really uneven year, and when you add it all up, I don’t think it comes out to the hype he was getting. Some people were calling him the consensus top QB in the draft this year. That just seems extreme to me for his track record.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

I was just trying to point out how he contradicted himself by saying that he doesn’t want McCoy because he’s a spread QB. But he likes Pike without acknowledging that he’s a product of the spread as well.
I don’t like McCoy (mainly) because of his tangibles.

a la Smith
Smith is going to have to learn to play under center more. I don’t think he can do it. He just doesn’t have the arm for it. He can’t throw accurately consistently enough and doesn’t have the arm strength to throw bullets while backing up. Brees and Manning were doing it all day. Smith throws interceptions or lame ducks when he tries it. And we can’t spend all game in the spread. One, because the defenses will adjust to it. Two, because Smith also can’t throw the deep ball accurately. So the gist of this post is understandable.
We need an O-line and a QB to get better. But the answer may have been sitting on the bench all year: Nate Davis. If it’s not him, I don’t see any answers in the draft this year. Because none of them seem any better than Davis is unless they just shock everyone from the start.
I really think Davis should be given a chance to start next year.
He seemed really poised to me in the preseason, granted he wasn’t playing starters, but you can’t teach that. He might be to dumb to look to hard into things or be scared like Smith, that’s my kind of guy.
Man,
McC and Raye are not going to cut Smith loose ! That’s their BOY ! McC will die before he cut him. Hill will most likely be gone for another FA or Draft pick.
The Niners have a lot of work with the current roster. We all know Bruce is gone as well as Battle. Michael Robinson touch the ball only 27 times in 13 games. ( 6 pass, 3 rush and 18 kr ).. Not worthy of a available roster spot. I’m sure there will other considerations, but this is what comes to mind right now.
Someone mention Tony Pike of Cinn. That would an excellent selection to replace Hill, with Nate Davis as backup to Smith. (OMG ).
Yeah....I mentioned Pike, as a back-up to Nate Davis: WHEN WE GET D Mc FOR THE START!
K.C.Edwards -AKA- "THE" DarkkStarr
colt mccoy
HE IS NOT AN UPGRADE TO SMITH. THE PICKINGS ARE SLIM BUT I WOULD CONSIDER DAN LEFEVOUR IN THE 3RD OR 4TH ROUND. THE GUYS A WINNER WITH A BIGGER ARM AND BETTER MOBILITY THAN MCCOY. TEBOW IN THE 3RD OR 4TH WOULD BE GREAT. HE HAS ALL THE INTANGEBLES AND WOULD HAVE TIME TO DEVELOP GAME AT THE PRO LEVEL. THE FREE AGENTS ARE NOT ANY BETTER THAN WHAT WE HAVE NOW. VICK HAS LOST HIS SPEED SO HE ISNT THE THREAT HE USED TO BE. MCCOY LOOKS LIKE ALEX SMITHS SICKLY BROTHER.

I like re-treads better than draftees
There’s exceptions to this (USC QBs), but for the most part so few QBs enter the pros anywhere near ready to play that unless you’re drafting them as either a project (Nate Davis) or an athlete (Michael Robinson) I think it’s better to use picks elsewhere. Just as an example, I’d be happier with the 49ers trading a 3rd or 4th round pick for Brady Quinn than if they drafted Pike or McCoy in the third round. Why?, because Brady Quinn is basically one of those guys with three years of NFL experience. I’m not in love with Alex Smith, but I’m less in love with rolling the dice on trying to upgrade that position through the draft or a trade unless it’s for a low round pick.
because Brady Quinn is basically one of those guys with three years of NFL experience.
That’s false.
Pike actually has potential to be a very good NFL QB.
Quinn has terrible downfield accuracy, seems afraid of throwing the deep ball, and gets nervous in the pocket.
He’s been nothing short of terrible so far.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
by SportsChicken on Feb 9, 2010 1:04 PM PST up reply actions
meh, I'd pass
I’d only draft a QB if he was far and away a better long term prospect than Davis.
There are QB’s in this draft who fit that, but not McCoy or anyone else outside the top 2 guys.
