Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Little love for the Niner Nation moderators/bloggers

Just for the hell of it (well because I'm mean and I like seeing tears)  I took a look at the Colts SB Nation site and I couldn't believe how unprofessional their official bloggers are.  Not only do they not enforce any kind of site decorum, but they're in an open feud with some another website/blogger.  I don't always agree with what Fooch or Ninjajames write, but I'm really glad that for the most part our site doesn't degenerate into too much immature name calling and "internet tough guy" posing.  Here's a link their site, scroll down to the tweet just after the "Allow me to disagree with Peter King" article (if anyone knows how to make the link jump to that article just edit this).

Colts Site

I guess this guy BigBlueShoe is their Fooch.  Personally, I wouldn't use this site if Fooch acted like that.....

So, I guess I'm just saying thanks for not being like those guys because I really need my Niner news fix and it's nice to get most of it in one place.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Site moderating

I appreciate the kind comments.

I will say that each site runs things quite a bit differently, often based on the personalities of their leader. If you compare our site with Stampede Blue and Field Gulls you’d see dramatic differences in the spectrum. We’re rather laissez faire compared to FG, while we consider Stampede Blue much more laissez faire than us. So, I guess it’s all about the perspective. All three sites do well in traffic, so I guess if you love your team, the style doesn’t always matter for some people.

also, there's a 3 day waiting period before you can post comments

which i found out the hard way when i joined the blog to comment on a game day open thread.

by sleepyotter on Feb 11, 2010 3:26 PM PST up reply actions

I thought it was 2 days?

It’s good for the site because it keeps out spammers and I think it gives people a chance to calm down.

With that rule NinersNation wouldn’t have a “falconsownniners” fanpost.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

I have to give him that.

by smileyman on Feb 13, 2010 12:04 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think it's good for the site.

I’ve went over it before so I won’t get into it too much, but bloggers/internet goers these days are ultimately shallow. A good portion won’t stay and wait two days based on how good the content is, they’ll just say screw it and move on.

I chose water over wine... Jars of formaldehyde... think of all the things I missed... Why'd you make me a scientist?

by James Brady on Feb 13, 2010 11:56 AM PST up reply actions

content

I’d actually disagree in one context. I’ve heard from a lot of people that register at Niners Nation and begin commenting, had been reading the site as an un-registered member for months at a time. Given how long they’d been reading before, I don’t think a wait-period would make much of a difference.

Obviously people who try to register the first time they come to the site would potentially be a different story.

by David Fucillo on Feb 13, 2010 1:51 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think it's bad per se.

I just don’t think it’s good. In essence, I think it’s a useless thing to do.

spam

Sites do it to prevent spam attacks. A spammer won’t wait the couple of days. We’ve avoided mass spam attacks here for the most part so it’s not an issue at this point.

by David Fucillo on Feb 13, 2010 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

I guess I just don’t like it when a fan creates an account and then posts a random fanpost right after a loss blaming ownership for everything that is wrong with their life.

The 2 day waiting period would keep those people away, or at least give them a chance to calm down before making a comment that brands them as [site decorum]s

Just out of curiosity, if there is nothing good to read here and you don’t like getting reprimanded for language issues, how come you keep coming back? I don’t mean that as a snide question, but just curiosity.

by David Fucillo on Feb 9, 2010 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

You’re reprimanded for language because it’s a site standard. It was part of the agreement that you read when you signed up on the website. If you weren’t prepared to not swear, then you must have lied when you accepted the terms and conditions.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

Sensitivity here?

Did you read the post on SB where BigBadBrad (as he’s known over at BRB) cries that someone didn’t say hi to him?

Have you seen their attempts to belittle KSK (a known humor/sports blog) because they couldn’t take it that KSK made a joke about them?

At Stampede Blue, there’s no room for discussion or debate because the Colts are the greatest team ever because of their statistical domination. Disagree and be banned.

by TexansDC on Feb 10, 2010 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

Umm you obviously don't read over there and only look at titles for things that you can say bad about us.

really if you knew anything you wouldn’t say half the things you just did. BBS has reason to not like it and it did not start because of someone not saying “Hi”. Most people didn’t agree with BBS anyway but obviously you don’t know this cause you read nothing.

I understand people like the freedom to do what they want, but a few simple rules are not the end of the world. I think it helps improve the level of discussion. Obviously some people disagree with me.

by David Fucillo on Feb 10, 2010 9:10 AM PST up reply actions

We definitely get considerable freedom to express ourselves here.

Just no swearing, which I wish weren’t the case, but I can live without it. Too many insults discourages people from posting diverse opinions anyways.

Other than that if I were to attempt to run a community, I’d try to emulate guys like Fooch and Ziller from StR. Being able to provoke discussion without antagonizing people isn’t easy, and these guys are masters of the art. It’s enough to spoil me and to shock me when I see how wrong some other community leaders get it.

Some guys get it wildly wrong like BBS who antagonizes people first and then complain about the discussion it provokes (I still can’t believe he told his own members that he was sick of defending his argument if they disagree with him, then they should leave because they obviously have no morals).
