More QB Talk

Well since so much talk has been made about the 49ers QB situation, I thought I would talk about it some more.  This is completely different from what else has been talked about so far though, so read on…

Let’s recap the past few days, the 49ers sign Carr, the Browns released Anderson and Quinn might be on the trading block.  The Giants signed some QB and there are still other QBs on the trading block.  So here is my question, do you think the 49ers offseason activites are done related to QBs?  Besides the eventual release of Hill or Davis, are the 49ers going to sign any other or trade for any other QBs before the start of the season.

I would have liked to trade Hill or Smith to the Eagles for McNabb, that way he would be able to mentor Davis, but that is not going to happen now.  I also would have liked to try to get McCoy in the second round of the draft because I think he might be good down the road, but now I don’t think that will happen either being as we already have an influx of QBs.

So here is my question, are the 49ers done making QB moves this offseason?

I agree on Colt McCoy

David Carr might be better then Alex Smith in Jimmy Raye’s system

One last salvo across this bow....

When it comes to Quarterrbacks the old saying goes….“If you have 2 QB’s, you don’t have 1”. This is the situation that currently faces the Niners. And it’s one that, unless something REALLY DRASTIC is done, is sure to doom this franchise for the next 5 yrs!
All over NN, I have heard people singing the praises of our incumbant QB Alex Smith ad nausium. What I fail to see is the coralation between their faith in him, and his on-field production. I even read the article done about 3 weeks ago that showed how Smith “statistically” was better than Hill. fine, I agree….numbers don’t lie. However, I counter that numbers, don’t tell the whole truth either.
Since Alex was drafted, he has had to battle many setbacks in the Bay. From the carosel that has been the O-Coordinators job, to new head coaches, and finally injuries. All good reasons to cut Alex a tiny amount of slack. But, I counter once again with another addage, about everyone’s body and excuses. The Niners now have gone out and SIGNED David Carr….FOR WHAT????!!! If “Golden Boy” Alex were sooooo entrenched, why sign this clown? We already have a bonafied rookie, a noodle armed fan favorite, and a guy who is STILL trying to hit his stride. Why on earth are we signing a guy who has been with 4 teams and hasn’t accomplished squat?! Is this a move by the FO to passify their fans? “Ooooh look….we’re serious about winning! WE just signed a former #1 Draft bust to the team! See…we’re mavericks of the game!” Really? I unfortunately am beginning to see parallels between the Niners and the fictional Indians team from the movie “Major League”. Creating a team so terrible, that moving to a new city is the only option to stay afloat. No offense, but, the Santa Clara Forty Niners just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
As for your prayer to trade Hill for McNabb…I too have been on my knees with you. I even wrote an entire fanpost dedicated to such an endeaver. Not only a good idea for the here and now, but, if done right, a great move for the future. I have no faith in either Hill, Smith or this new chump Carr. I simply don’t know enough about Davis to make a knowledgeable decision,. But, from what I’ve seen so far, I am more likely to give him that time than I am anymore to Smith. In my perfect world, I say we do a trade of Alex Smith and Nate Clements to the Eagles to acquire McNabb for the next 2-3 yrs. This gives Davis an opportunity to grow and be mentored. Then in the draft, we get a shutdown corner (which this yrs draft is chock full of) and get Myron Rolle to fill our safety woes. This way we still have used our 2 1st rd picks wisely and gotten better in only 3 moves. I am not like others on here that’s a fan of using a 1st rd choice on an O-lineman. History just doesn’t bode that out as a good idea. Others clamor that we need a special teams player and a change of pace running back. Those kinda players can be found anywhere in the draft, and we can sign them for long trem without breaking the bank to do it. If we act soon…there are still some serviceable O-Lineman available in UFA that we can put in that can contribute now. So that the 1 we get in either the 2nd or 3rd rd this year isn’t trown to the Lions so to speak.
The NFC West title as things stand right now is within our grasp. The real question is…will the Niners have the courage to make the most important decision at QB to make it happen?
P.S.: SInce Dereek Anderson is now available, I say dump Carr and get Anderson for a quick 2 yr deal that will give him an opportunity to play with a team that actually has some talent and show what he has.

Carr

I belive Carr was drafted to provide depth and not to create some qb competition as you assume. It makes some sense because the coaching staff seems to be headed toward an offense that suits Alex Smith’s capabilities. Now this being the case… IF Smith gets injured the FO does not want a noodle armed QB to take over the offense because he will be unable to run the same system that Smith is able to. However with Carr as a backup the offensive strategy can remain relativley intact. Smith is the starter in 2010 and bringing in Carr, at least to me, solidifies that fact.

3 qbs is normally what teams carry. Thats all the depth most teams need.

No

They got Davis as a 5th(4th?) round draft pick that could be placed on the practice squad or be the third string project qb. Regardless of that, why does having 3 qbs that can run your offensive system instead of just 2 bother you?

So

youre saying that upgrading the backup QB positionis a bad thing?
Im damn glad that Bill Walsh didn’t think like you . I seem to remember a guy named Steve Young backing up Joe Montana for a couple years , and correct me if I’m wrong , but THAT turned out pretty well! Steve Young had taken his share of beatings with the Bucs, just as Carr did with the Texans, and his confidence took a hit . Young was fortunate to be given another shot ,with a highly talented team that KNEW how to win , and he blossomed with the niners ! The turnaround happened because of great coaching, sitting behind a great QB , and having a much better team around him. The only place Carr wasn’t thrown to the wolves was with the Giants for two years , where he could backup Eli manning ! I think we’ll find out soon ,that Carr is a very competent QB and maybe a lot more. hopefully following the pattern of Steve Young !
AND NO IM NOT SAYING HE’S ANOTHER STEVE YOUNG !!!!
One more thing, if Derrek Anderson is so good ,why did he lose his job to Brady Quinn ,
who doesn’t exactly cause shivers up the leg of the NFL , when he steps on the field ?

Easy enough to answer...

You mention one of my favorite QB’s in Steve Young and what he brought to the Niners when he was traded away from the Bucs. Your argument has merit, but, is a totally different situation. In Young, the Niners KNEW what they were getting. Young’s body of work was there for the Niners to see and compare. He was already a Pro Bowl Qb in the making at the time of the trade. (In 2 seasons in TB he had 267 of 501, 11 tds, 21 ints, for 3217 yds and an average of 52.5%)
Furthermore, like you said, he got to learn behind a Hall of Fame QB 5 yrs before he took over the reigns of the team. IMO, alex Smith is NO WHERE NEAR a potential HOF QB.
As for why Anderson was unseated by Quinn, pick a reason from the following: The tam had invested millions in their GQ model Qb, his teammates totally quit on him, his HC was a total waffle act without the spine to stick to him, the FO wanted Quinn to start.
Finally, if you believe that Carr’s confidence has taken such a hit, why then do you think it’s a good idea for the Niners to pick up a “busted” player? That’s a waste of a positon and money. Besides, what was the purpose of drafting Nate Davis then if he’s still going to have to battle another guy for a position that’s already his?

LOL

Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.

Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.

If we had more picks in the 2nd and 3rd, I would take Pike, and i hope Sing was looking at him and not Gilyard.
