Not to copy a previous fan shot by bryce clan, but i wanted to provide the link and more information. According to the Washington Post, the 49ers have given Shaun Hill permission to seek a trade. The story also mentions Hill's TD/INT ratio over the course of the last 2 seasons which is 23/11. What value, if any could the 49ers get for Hill?

I personally think we will get something for him. He has a good track record.

Although, he more than likely would be released if he doesn’t find a team and teams know that. It would still be nice to maybe get a 6th for him though. 3 picks in the 6th would be nice.

6th only huh?

In a wild mock I was working on (we get 11 players out of the draft in that one LOL) I had him for a 5th and Snyder for a 6th.

Balanced draft with offensive emphasis. Pick 13 CJ Spiller 17 to Chargers 28 DI/DET Jared Odrick 48 WR Demaryius Thomas 60 S Reshad Jones
79 Jared Valdheer 110 OG Marshall Newhouse 141 CB Akwasi Owusu Ansah 172 OLB O'Brien Schoffield 208 FB Manase Tonga (He and Britt Miller can swap off and one play blocking TE and one FB)

Yeah there is not much value there anymore since we signed Carr. Most teams will expect him to get an out right release and may just wait on that. We have our 6th round comp though with the 208th pick, so we’ll at least have two.

Do you think we could get a conditional 4th for Hill?

Maybe from a team like the Rams?

the first thing I thought of was a conditional 4th rounder for Hill. As connie mack mentioned down the page, the guy has a better record than a lot of starters out there. He’s about as reliable as back ups get, and can produce solid numbers for a few games a season if he’s forced to start. The fact that teams know he is expendable to us is the worst part. That probably turned a fourth round pick into a sixth, if we’re lucky. Reminds me of what the Braves did with Javy Vasquez this past off season. They really must have wanted Carr…I hope he works out.

No

I think most teams that would be interested in him know that we will more than likely release him in preseason. I dont think there will be much interest in him until after the draft.

What the Niners should have done, is gone out publicly and said all 4 QB’s will be competing for roster spots and then it sounds like we may keep Hill. That would have added more value to announcing that we are letting him persue trades. Bad move by the FO I think. But then again I work in sales and have been very successful at it for a long time. They need to be more stratedic in the ways they approach things. They announce things without thinking sometimes.

Or planning things out ahead of time. If you have a sales tool like the media working for you, all you have to do is plant a seed in most cases and then the media blows it up enough to where it works to your advantage.

Yeah

I think this was bad timing all the way around. I do think that if they hadn’t already signed Carr we might’ve been able to get a conditional 4th for HIll but not now

And

If the 49ers play it right, the team that gets Hill by trade has him for the entire preseason learning the system, while the 49ers do not have to cut him until after the least game of the preseason (with no chance to learn the offense or work with the receivers on his new team) otherwise.

by seafood lover on Mar 12, 2010 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

But....;

The 49ers have Hill under contract for another year….doesn’t a trade for a draft choice or a player get you (the team that signs Hill) the existing (cheap) contract, versus the uncertainty of what Hill costs in free agency if more than one team wants him?

Educating Drew K.

I thought Davis was next to go??
Funny that your the first to post on this.

by goatfather on Mar 12, 2010 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

Huh?

I don’t think I said that. I may have said I want Davis to go, but never said he would for sure. You just pop out of the bushes to try and catch me on anything dotcha? I feel like I have a stalker. Educating Drew K huh? I already proved you wrong once on the Sproles thing, how long are you gonna keep it up huh? Some goats just keep ramming their heads against the same tree I guess trying to shake fruit out of a fruitless tree. Maybe that’s why you’re the father eh?

So, when should I expect the next Fanpost bashing me or trying to make a mockery of me? I’ll make sure that Fooch or HTS delete’s it next time since it was a bit inappropriate to knock a writer that dedicates his free time to contributing to the site in the way I do.

relax dude

I appreciate your metaphors. Wait…. where is Sean Hill

by goatfather on Mar 16, 2010 1:48 AM PDT up reply actions

this restricted free agency

may help us out in the sense that there’s alot less availability overall on the market. We still have him under contract, and he has a winning record and fairly good numbers as a starter. The problem is he’s been on like 7 different teams all as backups and third string QB with the exception of last year’s start. Uh I don’t know maybe a fifth or sixth round choice—-if we’re lucky.

by 11allstar on Mar 12, 2010 10:25 AM PST reply actions

7 teams?

Try 2… Minnesota for 1 season and us for the rest

I think he is worth a fifth or a fourth.

Or maybe player for player.
A solid backup QB that can win games with a reasonable contract. The Steelers should be interested.

They're called RUNS for a reason.

by connie mack on Mar 12, 2010 11:01 AM PST reply actions

Player for Player?

Hmm Steelers maybe so. Really the other teams I was seeing were Cleveland and Rams and no one we want on there is there?

i'm kind of sad about this

not because I think Hill is a great QB, but because he seems like a genuinely down to earth dude. I hope we can get something for him in a trade and he goes to a team that can use him. Also, I’m going to miss his appearances on the Joe Show, those were always good for a laugh.

Me too

I’m going to miss him on the Joe show occasionally. You always got to have at least one reneck on the team

Player for Player seems on the mark,

If we cannot get anything more than a 6th round pick, we might want to start thinking about a player instead.

Alex Barron with the Rams would seem like a fit.

also

Donte Whitner with the Bills. They inquired about Jason Campbell and were willing to give up a 4th in that trade. So it makes sense for them to trade Whitner straight up for Hill

Not a big market?

Cardinals, Panthers, Texans, Packers, Cowboys, Vikings, Rams come to mind for teams that might want a dependable backup.

And then God created Saturn.. And he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

by James Brady on Mar 12, 2010 12:48 PM PST up reply actions

Why?

Cardinals are going after Anderson.

Panthers…well, maybe.

Texans already have their #2 guy in Orlvosky.

Vikings have Rosenfels and Jackson.

Cowboys have Stephen McGee and Jon Kitna.

Rams…Bulger and Feeley.

There’s really not a big market.

by TexansDC on Mar 12, 2010 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think San Francisco will get anything

Everyone in the league knows he’ll be cut, and free to sign with any team he wants. San Francisco will be lucky to get a 6th rounder for him, but it would be nice if the team can get someone to acquire his services. While seeking trade suitors, Hill will also get a feel for what teams are interested if he’s released.

Like nocal said, if a team looking to dump another player is interested in Hill, the 49ers could acquire a player instead of a pick. Either way, Hill will likely be sent packing w/o any compensation heading back (hope not though).

by Andrew Davidson on Mar 12, 2010 11:28 AM PST reply actions

yeah a straight up trade

is probably best at this point..since most teams figure we’ll have to cut him anyway…if we can get a good backup or a special teams stud—I’m all for it. But even though shawn’s a great guy I dont think there’s a big market out there right now.

by 11allstar on Mar 12, 2010 11:30 AM PST up reply actions

What would you give up...

For a serviceable QB that only can dump off the ball, and lost his confidence as a starter, along with the confidence of the coaching staff?

Hill was a career 3rd string backup for most of his career. The reason why he got snaps was because the 49ers didn’t have a good QB on the roster, outside of Smith, who hasn’t broke out into being a true #1 yet.

Well, we're waiting....

I Have A Question For You Drummer, may be a little off subject though

Do you think Smith has it in him to break out in the 2010 season and live up to his #1 pick expectations? What did you think of his 2009 season

and

You have always been negative when it comes to Shaun Hill, but teams like Buffalo and St. Louis could use him as a stop gap. Why wouldn’t they give up a marginal player? or a mid round pick? Instead of going with the likes of Brian Brohm and AJ Feeley?

"Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. Can't do it. I want winners. I want people that want to win!!!"

by nocal81(Vincent) on Mar 12, 2010 1:14 PM PST up reply actions

Hill has no upside..

STL has o-line problems of their own, and Hill created more problems due to defenses stacking the box because he can’t consistently stretch the field with his are. He knew his limitations, I’ll give him credit for that. That’s why you saw a lot of dumpoffs to third and 4th options.

Smith still has a lot of mechanical issues that needs top be addressed and corrected in order for him to have a total command of an offense. Until that happens, he is a #2, and only on the 49ers is he a default #1.

Well, we're waiting....
