2010 Niners Nation Community Mock Draft 2.0 Results

Earlier today we conducted our second community mock draft of the 2010 draft season.  We're approximately 5 weeks away from the draft and it seemed like a perfect time for the draft.  Thanks to Drew K for putting it together and everybody else who helped it run along fairly smoothly.  For those who missed the first draft, we conducted it on January 23, back before the combine, free agency, and an assortment of other factors affecting draft stock.

Since that draft there have been several changes, although the 49ers once again came back with CJ Spiller and an offensive tackle.  People certainly seem to be locked in on Spiller.  Or, at least, the people who who like Spiller are picking for the 49ers.  We'll see how that plays out in April.

Drew will be back in a few days with some analysis on the picks.  For now though, I've posted the links to all four threads here, and the 2 rounds of results after the jump.

You’d have to ask whomever drafted for the Niners.

So sounds like the WRs are going lower or seem to be in this draft.

Mardy Gilyard’s still available. Jon Asomoah too.

Not so sure about Gilyard but I’m way surprised that AngelColts didn’t snap Asamoah up.

Asomoah should've gone to Green Bay

The Colts draft in general seems like the weakest to me. They’ll probably win 12 games again, but this draft class has me meh.

McCluster was out of left field

Didn’t see them doing that.

yeah just doing afther the fact assessment

With Ugoh having looked like a Yugo and Saturday being the later half of the week and Lilja being so little he’s gotten rid of, I could just see it.

The Sapp pick is a bit of a reach for a non-1st tier need

not at all a fan of the pick with Price, McCourty, Chad Jones, Odrick and even Kindle, still on the board.

Gronk in the 2nd was either my suggestion to TAC, or we came to the pick at the same time. The OL needs help, but I’m not big on Asamoah or any of the other linemen available. A significant upgrade of their in-line TE helps the blocking on O too.

If this draft was going a 3rd round my board would be Jason Fox, Mike Johnson, Kyle Calloway, Cry in the corner. An addition at tackle, would upgrade two spots as both the Colts current tackles have played guard well for them in the past.

by shake n bake on Mar 14, 2010 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah never got you guys tendency

to go for smaller (some might even say tiny) O Lineman. I mean I can understand tryng to get some speed off the end at defense but if I were Peyton I’d say “ok you blankety blanks, I want some big huge guys to protect me and to allow me to maybe hand it off to one of my RB’s without thinking it’ll only get me a yard. Now do you want to do that or do you want me to start talking about you the way I did about our ‘idiot kicker’”? :-)

big fatties generally aren't as good in pass pro, and wear down worse from holding their stance for 20-30 seconds before every snap

that’s how it made sense to me. Also using a style that isn’t popular at the moment lets you get players that fit your scheme for cheaper than teams get the players for the popular scheme (like their 4-3 Tampa-2, when the 3-4 is in vogue).

by shake n bake on Mar 14, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep I can see both those (has to laugh at 20-30 seconds)

I mean Saturday is great but the others didn’t pan out. Ugoh turned out to be a Yugo or it sure seems like it. Not that we’re doing that much better.

I was surprised by the Veldheer pick to the Redskins, they have a HUG hole at LT.

Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.

Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.

I agree with picks 1-5....

that is all

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

I hate #5 Berry should have fallen to us.

by manraj7 on Mar 13, 2010 3:42 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

There was no way that was happening

Eric Berry’s not going to be a 49er unless San Francisco trades up.

by TexansDC on Mar 13, 2010 3:47 PM PST up reply actions

in all reality scott pioli doesn’t draft bpa and he needs an OT. he is huge on positional value and salary, and won’t take a safety in the top 5.

by hellaninersfan on Mar 13, 2010 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

This is true but

Bulaga at 5 just felt like a reach.

If I could’ve traded back, I probably would’ve, but sticking at 5 with Berry staring me in the face was an easy pick since it fits a need and he’s a top-5 player.

by TexansDC on Mar 13, 2010 5:19 PM PST up reply actions

You made the right call TDC.

No way in Hades Pioli spends a top 5 on any LT. Albert is really coming on and the Chiefs had the #1 yards per carry avg to left tackle in the entire NFL this year. To move Albert to LG and Waters to C, as some would suggest, would set back 3 O line positions for this year. LT would be worse with a rookie who is not as good as Albert at the position. Guard would be set back because Albert , at least this year, would not be as effective as Waters, and C because Waters would not be at guard helping the new C in his reads and schemes.
Berry is the pick at 5. We’ve had no decent SS since jettisoning Pollard, and Page will be better at SS with his size and tackling ability. Eric Berry will excel at FS where he can use his instincts and skills to roam the field.

Moot

If I was around for the 2nd round I would have taken Tyson Alualu with the Giants pick [to replace Robbins] and Syd’ Thompson with the Packers pick [since Al Harris and Charles Woodson are both in their 30s and Al Harris did tear his ACL last year]

1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 6. Jake Sharp 7.Preston Parker

by supraman on Mar 13, 2010 6:01 PM PST reply actions

I’d be pretty upset if Cody, Ghee, Spikes, Washington, Williams, Thomas, and Ducasse (well unless we drafted Asomoah later) were all on the board, and we took Chad Jones. I’m pretty unimpressed by him to begin with, though I was hoping for Morgan Burnett, who was taken a few picks earlier. Good thing this isn’t the real draft!

Burnett was my pick, and I felt we needed to grab a Safety. Although I must say I tempted by Spikes.

#13 ?

It doesn’t make sense to pick Spiller @ 13. No doubt Spiller has all the talent to be a great RB. But to pick him to start as a KR/PR doesn’t rate as a 1st rounder. That’s more like Al Davis thinking. Gore does have a few more years left and the only way I would pick Spiller is if I read my Crystal Ball and saw Gore out for the season. The Brass still believe in Coffee and will give him a chance like Smith. Why ? , I don’t know !
A KR/PR can be had in the later rounds for a whole lot less. A OL and CB are my choices in the first round. Whoever they may be. Hopefully Starters ! That would settle two soft positions !!!

Dear NinerNation...

All 49er Fans in Austin would greatly appreciate it if you stop scheduling these mock drafts during midterms and SXSW week. Because I managed to miss another one, darn it.

Love, Sigma.

Much rather attend SXSW than a Niner mock draft
