49ers reportedly trade Shaun Hill to Lions for 2011 seventh round draft pick
Matt Barrows has heard from league sources that the 49ers have agreed to trade Shaun Hill to the Detroit Lions for a 7th round pick in the 2011 draft. Scott Linehan coached Hill when he was in Minnesota back in 2005.
I'd imagine Hill will immediately become the backup QB to Matt Stafford. The Lions' backups last year were Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton (Patrick Ramsay joined the roster at some point). Culpepper is a free agent and will probably walk. Stanton and Hill would seem to compete for the #2 spot. The Lions drafted Drew Stanton in the second round of the 2007 draft, but he hasn't developed like they hoped. He lost some time to injury and has generally struggled as a pro.
And so, thus ends the Shaun Hill era in San Francisco. We'll have a more appropriate send-off at some point this week. Whatever your thoughts on Hill, he definitely had an impact in his time with the 49ers. When you can generate the kind of debate Hill generated, you've created some kind of impact.

Yep I was hoping for more..
well at least we got something for him. It was sounding like he would be released.

teams knew we were gonna end up releasing him.. this was about as little as we could get but sounds right
Yeah disclosure sucks :-)
If it wasn’t announced to everyone that we’d allowed him to seek a trade we might have been able to move it up to a 6th or maybe even a 5th. But oh well something for it at least. 4.2 on the trade chart LOL

not true
the writing was on the wall, the team was going to cut Hill. San Francisco is lucky to get anything in return.

Hill
is definitely not worth a fifth rounder. He’s a 30 year old qb who has a weak arm and will only be a backup at best. We’re lucky we got something for him at all.
My Ultimate Realistic Mock Draft for 49ers
1A) Anthony Davis - RT Rutgers
1B) C.J. Spiller - RB/KR/PR Clemson
2) Kareem Jackson - CB Alabama
3) Demaryius Thomas - WR Georgia Tech
4) Mike Johnson - OG Alabama
5) Sean Canfield - QB Oregon State
6) Keaton Kristic - OLB Oregon State
7) Dexter Davis - OLB/DE Arizona State
+1
I just don’t know why the lions wouldn’t wait till Hill go released. I suppose for a 7th which isn’t all that significant it’s worth not having to worry that some other team is going to swoop in and offer him a chance to compete or something like that
by HaloFanInDC on Mar 14, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Maybe they were worried
that if he was released that the Rams would jump on him? Don’t really see the Bucs going after him. Though do those same rules apply now (That if a player is waived/released then teams in order get first crack at him)? Worked out to their benefit a time or two last year if memory serves.

Trade keeps the same contract in place
Lions might have thought a 7th rounder is worth not renegotiating with the player.
Good call
Hill’s salary is only $1.5 Million.
Had he been released, he would have been re-signed for more than that.

I don’t think it’s all that surprising. For one, we’re probably overvaluing our own guy, which is the easiest thing to do as a fan. For another, it was pretty clear that he’d at least be released at some point. And for another, he’s a backup. I don’t know why another team would go out of their way to offer more than this.
It’s too bad we couldn’t get more, because he gave the team a lot over the last few years, but I can’t say I’m surprised.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

I’m glad they were able to get anything.
I do think, however, that they should have tried to trade Hill before acquiring Carr.
Of course, if they failed to sign Carr….they would have been in some deep [site decorum]

I always liked Hill and he will be missed. He may have had a noodle arm but he knew how to manage a game and always had the team on his side. At least he got his 15 minutes. I will always love that picture of him with the 100% steroid free shirt on.

I thought Hill’s destination would be the Bears, that way he can strike back with Martz. But I guess Linehan took the if you can’t beat him join him approach with Hill.

If nothing else
It was him being put into the starting role that initially gave me some optimism that this team is turning the corner. His time here should definitely be appreciated.
I also give McC some credit for getting this done sooner than later. I was convinced as soon as word went out on him being allowed to seek a trade that it couldn’t happen before the end of preseason.
by Mangoman on Mar 14, 2010 12:59 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
I can’t believe it was for a 2011 pick, unless it’s conditional on snaps or playing time or something. I personally would have let him stay for a little longer to see how fast Carr catches on.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.
That would have been unfair to Hill
Trading him now allows him to learn DETs offense so he can compete with Stanton.

The Lions had an extra 7th already in 2011. That's why they offered that pick.
They got it when they traded Kevin O’Connell to the Jets. So basically the Lions traded Kevin O’Connell for Shaun Hill in their eyes.. not bad.

Thank You, Shaun Hill
for everything. Seriously, this guy played his heart out, and even if he didn’t have the physical capabilities, he had the mental toughness, and it produced into a 10-6 record.
Favorite play ever by Shaun Hill: that run against Arizona on monday night football where his helmet getting taken off but he still got 13 yards on 3rd down for the first down.
Good Luck in Detroit Shaun Hill.
Thanks again for everything homie.

I Didn't Expect The 49ers To Get Anything
not because Hill isn’t a good backup QB, solely due to the fact that every team knew we were going to eventually release him. I think it was more about the Lions securing him without any competition. Lets face it, Hill is a real good backup QB and teams like St. Louis, Arizona, Seattle, Chicago, Carolina, Washington, Green Bay, Buffalo, both New York teams, Indianapolis, Houston, Pittsburgh, Oakland and Denver could have used him. That is a huge market for Hill. Also the 49ers may not have wanted Hill to end up with any of the NFC West teams, all of which could use a backup/starter.
Good luck to you Shaun Hill and thank you for giving it your all every Sunday and leaving it all on the field, and for being our most successful QB since Jeff Garcia.

Brian Jennings was a 7th rounder
Also some fairly big names like Colston, Housh, Derrick Ward, Donald Driver, Jamal Anderson and Raheem Brock.
Even if the probability of finding a contributing 7th round pick is 1 in 20, I’ll take that 5% over 0% chance of getting return from cutting a player. I’ll take that any day of the week.
Yep every time I watch the Saints and see Colston make a play I go
dang (ok a bit more than dang) and they picked him up in the 7th! Forgot that Housh was too.

A 7th round pick absolutely does not mean automatic failure. I even recall a 10th round draft back in 1979 named Clark that didn’t do too badly with us.
And a 10th or 12th pick on one of our best lineman
