Ladanian Tomlinson signs 2-year deal with Jets; Browns trade Brady Quinn to Broncos
Fooch's Update: The New York Jets agreed to terms on a 2-year deal with Ladanian Tomlinson. With Thomas Jones heading to the Kansas City Chiefs, Tomlinson will be battling Shonn Greene for playing time. I'd imagine Greene will be the #1 guy, but LDT will certainly get a good number of carries.
________
And so we've had two high profile QB trades today (/sarcasm). This isn't 49ers specific, but it does impact the 49ers, given that they'll face the Broncos in London in 2010. The Broncos were in need of a long-term answer at QB and are hoping they've traded for that answer. The Broncos have reportedly acquired Brady Quinn from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for FB Peyton Hillis, a 6th-round pick in 2011 and a conditional 2012 draft pick (no round specified).
The Broncos dealt Jay Cutler last offseason to the Bears in a deal that brought them QB Kyle Orton. Orton had his moments last year, but was not a long term option. Our Broncos blog, Mile High Report (link above), just got the news up and will surely have plenty of analysis in the coming days.
Thoughts on what this does for the Broncos and Browns for next year? And also how it might affect the draft?

Cleveland doesn't think highly of Quinn if that's all they got...
and with good reason.
The Browns probably draft a rookie QB and sit him behind Wallace for a season. That means a guy like Joe Haden or Eric Berry could slide back a little depending on what happens up at the top of the draft.
The Broncos probably set their sights on Dez Bryant for whatever mediocre QB they start.
Delhomme
Don’t forget that the Browns are going with Delhomme.

Yeah, that just happened, right?
I still think they should get a Bradford/Clausen if they’re there…but I imagine they’ll take someone in round 3, 4, 5 (LeFevour? Pike? Snead?).
Holmgren seems to like late round guys.
I think he will go for a guy like LeFevour or Pike (I think Pike would be the better choice).

I still think the Broncos will go with an ILB.
They released A. Davis.

Broncos not too bad, Browns awful!
Quinn will now become the solid quarterback he was at ND cuz he’s not on the Browns. Browns are screwed, as usual, as they now have Seneca Wallace who is a great back up, but mediocre starter, and Delhomme who throws more interceptions than TD’s. I don’t think this necessarily effects the 49ers in any way though because Quinn won’t be primed by the first game of the season in London. Expect more of the same from both teams.
"Until it's over, I'm not going to tell you it's over." - Nabby
I disagree
Quinn was never that good.
Even at ND he wasn’t that great.
His deep ball accuracy is terrible and he looked afraid last season, despite having a very good OL in front of him.

Let’s be honest, he’s look afraid since that Draft Day slide of his. HAHA!

I think quinn will go
down as a bust me personally im not saying he did’nt play good notre dame but i just think he’s a over achiever that got pumped because of weis being there its not the team that makes a quaterback looks bad sometimes its the QB who makes the team look awful.
See This Is What I Don't Get
Why couldn’t the 49ers have trade Michael Robinson and a 6th for Quinn? I understand that Carr will be a good backup QB for the 49ers, but why not go after a guy that has some upside? Especially if your not asked to give up that much in terms of compensation!! Quinn’s contract cannot be that bad considering he was a late 1st round pick; it just makes more sense to go after a player that has some upside and can play if asked to.
"Iess us expect nothing but greatness from ourselves"
Not a lot of upside with Quinn.
He built up too much muscle during college therefore his throwing motion is very stiff. Watching Quinn try to throw it deep is worse then watching Shaun Hill try to throw it deep. Michael Robinson is also a solid special teams player, you don’t give that up for a back-up QB.

Interesting
I didn’t know it was because of his muscles.
He just looks terrible when trying to throw a deep ball.

Benched 24 reps at the Combine. While it may not look like he has large muscle mass, its enough to make him stiff therefore his throws aren’t very accurate.

Quinn is not good.
And you don’t know what that conditional pick is. It could be a 2nd that turns into a 1st (too much) or possibly a 4th that can turn into a 3rd or 2nd (not that bad).
I don’t like Brady Quinn, I think Alex Smith is by far a better QB and gives us a much better chance to win (short and long term).

lol
the niners could have matched the price for quinn, IF they wanted to of course. lol @ 3 first round qbs.
The Browns
went from Derek Andreson and Brady Quinn to Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme. Holmgren did the same thing when he went to Seattle (sniping Hasselbeck from the Packers and signing the veteran Dilfer).
By all appearance, Delhomme is getting paid to start in Cleveland, but there should be a heavy amount of wildcat packages with Wallace + Cribbs on the field. I think Cleveland sits back and waits to draft a QB in this draft (if at all).

Hears Holmgren hollering from his office
“I said trade him to the 9ers for Hill and see if you can get a 6th….not for that guy Hillis we got in the 6th!” LOL
Balanced draft with offensive emphasis. Pick 13 CJ Spiller 17 to Chargers 28 DI/DET Jared Odrick 48 WR Demaryius Thomas 60 S Reshad Jones

In a way...
this almost justifies going after Delhomme. It certainly doesn’t explain why they gave him so much money, but it does mean that they brought him in as a short term veteran stopgap. In my opinion, this makes it clear that the Browns will be seeking a QB early in this year’s draft. With Jake and Seneca Wallace in town, there will be no pressure to throw a kid into the fire.
In other news, Peyton Hillis is awesome. I, personally, think the Broncos gave up too much.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
Yep on Hillis
he is good and can even play some HB for them not just fullback. That happened year before last didn’t it? (I know not by choice but he did and didn’t totally suck LOL)

Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.

Pretty nice one two punch for the Jets
Not a big fan of LT especially in the last few years but he could work with Shonn (Gang) Greene pretty well. And if LT goes into one of his sulking phases they can depend on Shonn Greene full time till he perks up again.

LT's sulking phases should have been looked at more closely, that team relies on the pass too much.
Whoever thought of using Sproles in goaline situations, was being stupid.

I want 2 ask my nationiers do
you think the ninere will make a harder push 4 lione washington since they picked up LT today or will they keep him and make him the thrid RB on there dept chart ,i think you might hear a few grumbles from washington about where he fits on this team espicially having 2 sit behind a 1 year player and a aging yet a ( HOF ) but still aging.running back.

Effect on Leon Washington
Does this mean the Jets are thinking more seriously about trading Leon Washington, or at least not matching any offer another team may give?
If so, this might open the door for the niners more. I know a lot of people balked at giving up a 2nd rounder for Washington while also having to offer an unmatchable contract. What if the Jets would now do it for a 3rd?
I don’t think LT was signed to replace Washington.

That was Washington’s job.
I don’t see how they need Leon Washington.
LT is a good backup and Brad Smith handles the wildcat/kickoffs/punts.
I’d give up a 3rd for him.

what I don't get
is why sign LT to a contract very similar to the one Jones signed with the Chiefs? It makes no sense to me at all. Loyalty in New York? I suppose not.
Leon Washington has been trying to get a new deal with the Jets in recent offseasons, and this is obviously a sign that times for Washington are changing. Injury problems and dumb contract to LT have me believe that the Jets don’t care for Washington.
Anyone that gives up a 3rd or better for Washington should be questioned. The team obviously doesn’t want him, and the longer suitors wait, the lower the draft compensation should get. I can see Leon getting moved on draft day for a 4th or 5th rounder.

So according to the infamous draft trade chart what was Shaun Hill’s value for a 2011 7th round pick?
If it’s the first pick in round 7 in 2011, the value is 14. If the Lions end up with the last pick (HA!), the value would be 2. Realistically it’s a value of anywhere between 11 and 14.
