The fuel to smith's Fire
I just watched D. Carrs Interview on The Official Team site, and it hit me. Alex Smith Should Be pissed. Carr, a former first round pick Basically came to the conclusion that the 49ers are with the worst off situation. That should be a major slap in the face. On top of that! He (Carr) sent Hill... who Alex smith considered his best friend Packing to Detroit. I was never a huge fan of Carr's, But Maybe he's what we've been missing. Alex Smith has never really had anybody to really push him to that point. His Biggest competition was his best friend which really didn't mind if he won the job or not. I'm sure Carr isn't thinking that way judging by his comments. He's looking to be the man, and he felt like Cleveland and Arizona were better off then we were and had a better chance to win the job here. Carr had it rough trying to be the starting QB for an expansion Team. Then backing up who many consider an elite QB in manning. He's Never really had a fair chance. He said it best, sometimes it felt like what he did in camp didn't really matter. I was kind of nervous at first because I didn't want Carr to mess up Smiths development and heck I just liked Hill. I want to see what Smith can do under the same staff but this may be what Smith needs. Should Smith Come to camp with a chip on his shoulder?

well considering
alex smith has wilted under every qb competition he’s ever had (Hill won the job last year and JTO the year before although smith did get injured, he wasn’t winning it)
I think the David Carr signing is good thing. He, like Alex has alot to prove. He doesn’t want to go down in history as a bust, he’s back home and he wants to compete.
I disagree with your assertion that he felt “the 49ers are with the worst situation.” and that “Carr sent hill packing to Detriot.” Don’t know exactly where that came from…
If you read his first media transcript, he actually says that Eli Manning and him thought the niners were the best situation as an up and coming team because of their talent. He personally went on to say he wanted to be here because family is important to him and the FO wanted him here and believed in him.
Second, Carr didn’t send Hill packing—-the FO and ultimately Singletary and McCoughlan did. They didn’t believe he had the tools to run the type of offense they are trying to run—and Hill didn’t do anything to disprove that with 8 and sometimes 9 guys in the box on defense.
Imagination is a wonderful thing.
"alex smith has wilted under every qb competition he’s ever had"
But not when it is so badly misused.
JTO—there was no competition.
Hill—lost eventually.
College? High School? Pop Warner? etc.
In this case, the word “every” means “in one specific instance”.

Woah
stop the stoning, put the rocks away! I didn’t say it, its been said in a number of media posts including the Merc..
and to clarify qb competition, since i horribly sent you in confusion/retaliation, refers to training camp, not every level…of course i didnt follow a. smith’s career as closely as you Big Smith fans so it may be refer to that too…
Not a big Smith fan!
Just a 49er fan, and Smith happens to be a 49er. For some of us being a niner fan means supporting the whole team, everyone in a niner uniform, UNLESS they have disgraced the team by their poor conduct or bad choices.

Sorry. I’m not trying to attack you. I just don’t like the “every competition” line. If it was the Merc writers who said it, just imagine that I’m attacking them.

The goal is to win games.
At a certain point, Smith needs to stop being babied.
Smith can’t be surprised that somebody looked at his stats and felt his position was precarious. His position IS precarious. Smith needs to continue to improve to lock down the starting job, and if he expects anything else, that’s his problem.
(Just to be clear, however: there’s no evidence that Smith took this as an insult. There’s no evidence that Smith has a bad attitude about this. People need to chill out. Smith is a pro who understands the realities of the game.)

Any QB that's not a Pro Bowl QB needs to feel like they can lose their starting job
Kyle Orton got a call from McDaniels after the Broncos picked up Quinn and McDaniels said Orton was safe—do you think either of ’em believe that?
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Yeah, maybe...
McDaniels: “Hey Kyle… so, I figure by now you’ve seen that we got Brady Quinn….”
Orton: “Yup.”
McDaniels: “Just wanted to check in and make sure you didn’t take it the wrong way. We don’t see him as a guy who can take your job.”
Orton: “Yeah, he sucks pretty bad. I figure my job is safe.”
McDaniels: “Cool. I’m glad we’re on the same page.”

Lets think back
On the Smith experiment with the niners. and who really failed?
1 He came from a spread offense, they put him under center, and started
him as a rookie. (He had to re-learn to play QB ,and read a defense)!
2 He was not mentored by a good quarterback, or even a decent one
3 Lousy O line!
4 " Practice squad quality" receivers!
5 Average, or below average running back’s!
6 I can’t even remember who played tight end ( must have been a good one)!
7 A clueless head coach with only a defensive acumen!
8 Forced to play while having a serious injury!
9 Five different offenses, in five years. He could never build on the previous year!
10 He didn’t have a team built around his strength’s!
If you were in the same situation could you succeed? I doubt it very much!
So up to this year I think the niners have failed him, not the other way around!
But I will say this, in 2010, it’s on Smith to produce!
NO EXCUSES FROM HERE ON OUT1
umm this is the 49ers
we have frank gore. He of 4 consecutive 1000 yard seasons. go look up how many RB’s have done that in the history of the NFL. I’m pretty sure its less than 30, and there are some good names on that list. somone did a front page post on it a while ago, might have been florida danny’s review of runningbacks. if it was someone else I’m sorry.

When you try
to correct someone’s punctuation ,at least spell your critique correctly. Sentence is with an

I think this shows that the 49ers are serious about winning now and bringing Carr in means all business with one goal in mind. To succeed. I don’t think Alex will take this as a slap in the face but more as an enormous challenge with little room for error. It could prove to be a VERY good move by the front office.

and if he does take it as a slap in the face he'll hopefully respond by saying "I'll show them!"
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Just listening to Alex Smith talk though, I don’t take him for that type of guy. And to be honest, I think that him and Carr will get along pretty good considering they’ve both endured similar careers. Carr may be able to help Smith better because he’s been through the fire already so to speak.

Love how this poll doesn't have any option for Alex Smith pushing his ownself to new heights
Personally I think Carr will just be a good backup, and any pushing that will be done will be by Alex himself. If it’s not it won’t be permanent.

I HOPE
Nate Davis plays amazing, and becomes the #2. Then when Alex hurts his widdle thumb we have Nate step in and take the job. The next “Tom Brady” Nate will take us all the way to the Superbowl!! ha ha

Seriously though...
Nate Davis is going to be 3rd string again. To hope for anything else isn’t being realistic. And probably the next year and the next year and the next year after that even.
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
Jeez..
I understand what you’re saying but its so…convoluted. I agree that Nate Davis becoming the #2 this year and possibly next is far-fetched. I don’t like Davis starting anytime soon, but why can’t you be a little optimistic? He showed had some tools and intangibles in college and pre-season.
Here's hoping 2010 is the end of our drought.
When a guy looks good playing against 3rd and 4th string players who will most likely be on the streets the following week isn’t exactly the best gauge of talent. I want to see Davis actually play NFL-caliber defenses before we start hyping him up as the future if Smith fails.

I don’t see how it’s convoluted at all. Nate Davis isn’t leap-frogging either Smith or Carr on the depth chart. It’s very cut and dry. No matter what you think of Nate Davis – no matter how optimistic you are for his future – realistically his chances of being anything other than the third stringer this season on this team with Alex Smith and David Carr on the roster are about 0%.

About getting "pushed to new heights."
I wonder why people think signing a backup is likely to do anything to Smith.
Why is having Carr behind him going to motivate him in a way that having Hill behind him didn’t?
Why is having Carr behind him going to motivate him in a way that wanting to win won’t?
Why is having Carr behind him going to motivate him in a way than angry fans won’t?
I don’t understand why anybody can look at Smith’s career and think the problem is motivation. I’ve written it before, but it bears repeating: Smith has done absolutely everything right EXCEPT deliver on the football field consistently and at a high level.
He puts in the hours in the offseason. He stays after practice to work on timing with receivers. He’s played when the coach asked him to despite being hurt. He’s come in on off-days to work with receivers. He pushed himself to come back from injury to compete. He doesn’t shirk on film study.
Alex Smith’s problem isn’t – and never had been – motivation. If he ends up being a failure as a QB when his career is over – and yes, it’s quite possible – the problem might be that he was put in lousy situations and it might be that he just doesn’t have the talent.
But it won’t have been motivation.
Motivation is what drives success
and you’re right, it doesn’t mean he’ll amount to anything more than he is. But last season, it seemed to have paid off. If he even comes close to repeating what he did last season in both halves next year, I don’t think we have anything to worry about as far as quarterback goes. And most importantly, I dont think we have to worry about teams stacking the box anymore.
The one thing Carr can provide Smith, is that he has been down a similar path in his career as far as being put in bad situations. Since he can relate, he may be able to help Alex get through tough situations and persevere. Carr seems to have a lot of faith in himself and maybe Alex seeing that will rub off some. But it seems that you have no faith that Smith can get it done and have already given up on him. So my comment here is probably a waste at this point.
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
I think Carr wins the job
maybe not by opening day, but by week 4 or so. Alex does horribly in camp, practice, so that will not help him. If he has a few bad games, with the expectation levels so high right now, the excuses mostly gone (assuming we also get a Tackle and the rest of the line plays well enough)…this is his last chance. If he chokes Carr takes over and the team never looks back…rather, forward…to a future draft pick to at least start cultivating. They won’t roster Smith again next year (his deal is about up anyways) if Carr takes over and does as good or slightly better of a job.
This is just how I feel…but obviously I’m not even close to being paid to work as even a ball boy in the NFL…so you can trash it all if ya want.

Alex doing bad in camp
New OC, New OC, Injury, Injury, New OC
The real question to me is
how much progress does Nate Davis make this year? Enough to stay on the roster next year (which I link to also winning the #2 job)?
"If I were to walk down a dark alley in a bad part of town, I'd want Ray Brown with me. And if I were to have a nice dinner at a fine restaurant, I'd want Ray Brown with me." The Late Great McKittrick
Really just depends
on how many good Qb’s come out next year, and if there is one worth drafting which there should be. We will see more from Davis this year in preseason but you can count on Smith and Carr being #1 and #2… the only way Davis get’s to #2 is if one of those guys get’s injured (*knock on wood)
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
I count on one of those guys being released by 2011 season
so that’s the premise of my question. Whichever ends up starting by season’s end stays and the other goes. Gut feeling is that Alex is done after 2010.
"If I were to walk down a dark alley in a bad part of town, I'd want Ray Brown with me. And if I were to have a nice dinner at a fine restaurant, I'd want Ray Brown with me." The Late Great McKittrick
reason being is multi-faceted
one, we don’t need a backup who failed as our starter and is mired in contempt.
two, we need to make room for the QBOTF, which isn’t on the roster, likely.

Well Carr is under contract to 2012 and I don’ think there is any option involved in the deal. But I suppose he could still be traded. If Alex does well this year, they’ll more than likley extend him. If Alex doesn’t do well, and Carr is just servicable, then we will more than likely draft a QB 1st or 2nd round next offseason. They could both potentially be on the roster pending what happens through the course of the up and coming season though.
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
if alex doesn't do well though...
I think he’s released or traded in much the same way that Hill was. If he does well, then I’m happy and we extend him…not for too long though.
If Carr wins and keeps the job though, I think Alex is gone.

I expect Alex to do big things this year… I don’t think carr will get to do anything more than hold a clipboard if Smith can stay healthy
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
and if Carr is named the starter, and Alex is released, we’ll draft a QBOTF in early rounds next year.

Seems kinda dumb
Cuz if your QB falls on his face then that means your team has too. So they are then saying they wish the team to fail.

Smith does need to be pushed.
I actually think Carr and Smith will be enemies. Smith has a cocky personality – Carr appears to have the same. I’d like to see Smith play the 2nd half of the Titans game for a whole year.
But all reports were that Smith and Hill were the absolute best of friends last season. Kind of contradicts this idea.
