Around SBN: Todd Haley Is The Steelers Next Offensive Coordinator

And here we go again...

Hello Fooch,

I'm baaaaaaaaaaack. I guess the ban you placed on me from posting must have expired or something. Hey that's neither here nor there buddy. Just curious to hear your glorious advice on how the FO is doing this off season, so far. As you would guess I'm already sickened that we still cant seem to, or don't know how to, land a Bouldin-esque free agent but I've beat that horse once before.

Anywho-Once again there appears to be a flurry of moves going on...and S-H-O-C-K-E-R...the 49ers have done nothing worthwhile. Carr is an abortion so please don't use that as an example. Now- I don't want to take the NN focus away from talking about Bear Pascoe on the board, but do you suppose I could get some insight into what Jed Jr is doing right now? I'm mean bouldin, Vanden Bosch, Taylor, Cromartie, Rolle, Dansby, Peppers, T.Jones, Burleson. Lot of owners spending money here on worthwhile talent and we grabbed Carr????

Look, I know your content with .500 football as long as you see "passion" but this seems alot like what we did last off season. That would be absolutely nothing. Are we all sure Lil Jeddy has the power to spend Mummy and Daddy's money? Is this really happening again? I'm not saying, I'm saying dude. Smells like another attempt to achieve mediocrity to me.

Ban

You were never banned. I issued a warning to you. And as far as being happy with .500 football, I see you really haven’t changed and continue to put words in my mouth.

Yeah:

I just checked the history. He got two warnings and was never banned. What a bizarre post. Although, I will say this:

ProTip: If you don’t actually want to be banned, it might be a good idea not to openly antagonize the people you’re trying to communicate with.

I'm on niner nation probation 2 ( yea lol that rhymed first free style of the day )

but i asked that question early 2 and i was hit ( why spend theres nothing out there, this FA is weak) what really ticked me off is how the niners let safety rhodes ( from the jets ) go to arizona 4 a egg sandwich and yes i do feel he’s a quality safety just because ryan came in there with a new scheme and benched him 4 somebody he was familiar with i think over all he’s a quality safety and he’s young ‘. But yea even the little moves they made and i do mean little was like wtf akin aydole ’’ are you serious ’’ what has he done but yea jed is sitting with his poker chips and folding on every hand.

Patience

As far the team’s moves (or lack there of) thus far, I have no problem with patience. I think the team is in a position where they should continue building through the draft, and using free agency for the deeper end of the depth pool.

As far as making runs at all these players you think they should go after…first, neither you nor I have any clue whether the 49ers contacted them. Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t. There’s no proof one way or the other.

I have had no interest in a guy like Julius Peppers. Yes he’s talented, but he’s also absurdly expensive and the team needs to spend their money extending guys like Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, and Dashon Goldson, among others.

For a guy like Jason Taylor (I’m assuming you mean Jason Taylor when you say Taylor), I’m sure a 35 year old pass rusher is a nice pick-up, but I’m willing to roll the dice with Brooks, Haralson and Lawson and whatever the draft might net.

Especially Brooks, he was tearing it up the last part of the season when he was healthy and actually got playing time. I am pretty excited to see what he can do next year.

Guys that have gone early didn't fit our team. Aside from Chromartie I would have passed on all FA's.

I like the stradegy, but I understand I am being impatient, so maybe you should try not being so impatient.

free agents

I love how people think their team should be going after every single free agent out there. Or if their team doesn’t sign a player or trade for a player then obviously they didn’t bother attempting. That blows my mind.

by David Fucillo on Mar 16, 2010 11:53 PM PDT up reply actions

The Niners were pretty good as-is last year

We lost some very very close games against some very very good teams. Some people may argue that the only thing that matters is getting the win. But this team last year made some real progress from years previous to that. This year we will hopefully be able to close some of the closer ones out for the win. I dont think one or two free agents will put us over the top… not this year anyway. I think better play calling will certainly help a lot. So we should all be crossing our fingers that Jimmy Raye opens up the playbook a bit more than wishing for all the high-priced average acheiving free agents that are out there, or were out there.

Just fixing the punt returner situation would give us a win or two. Battle muffing those punts basically in front of our goal-line twice against the Texans and Seahawks lost us those games.

He did indeed. I feel he’s pretty attuned to the strengths of the team’s personnel. The only thing I really questioned was why Michael Spurlock would be the one to run the “Taser” formation. So glad they only tried that a few times. And why we didn’t use Spurlock as a Kick Returner sure baffles the heck out of me. Isn’t that all he’s good for?

by Amigo on Mar 17, 2010 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes and thats the niners 4 you let him make

plays (spurlock) left and right in pre-season then when reg-season starts there putting battle.morgan .michael robinson. the mascot .They put evrybody but spurlock and thats what he did in college .Thats why im baffeld at who makes these decisions because that was plain stupid.

by jayjonna415 on Mar 17, 2010 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I noticed that about Spurlock too

don’t know why he never returned punts for us. Then one of the last weeks of the season he got a 70 something yard punt return for a TD.

I don’t think he did at all. It looked like the same plays over and over and over all season long. I think there is more he can do but was reluctant because he wasn’t 100% confident in the personel.

Thats so true was'nt like 6 out of 8 games

we loss by 7 points or less you know that stat drew but we did come a long way and you hear aruond the league is that were one of those teams you don’t want 2 see on a bad day.Thats why i reaaly feel we do’nt need 2 over-haul are team a few tweaks here a few tweaks there and were in the playoffs bringing that physical pain on teams.

by jayjonna415 on Mar 17, 2010 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

they wouldn’t have traded boldin in the division
Vanden Bosch was overpaid
Taylor (chester?) is a good signing for the bears
Cromartie is weak in run support and tackling in general
Rolle blows coverage all the time and ended up with an insane paycheck
Dansby was a quality signing
Peppers was WAY overpaid, and there’s a chance of a rapid decline with pass rushers
T. Jones was a good signing
Burleson is lazy and only got his act together for his contract year. he’s on a 5 year contract now.

so only 3 of the signings were good out of the 9 you mentioned. I’m not feeling too jealous. I’m not expecting anything from free agency, but they better make it rain somehow in the draft.

Free Agents

The only free agent that is (or was) out there that I felt any real need to sign is Atogwe. He is a young, skilled playmaking safety, and requires no compensation to the rams. Dunta Robinson at CB would have been something to look at, but not for 6 years @ $57 million. None of the tackles that were available were must haves. No great return men were available.

Basic economics

There was a limited FA class and an unlimited amount of money to be spent. When all is said and done, the buyers in free agency (i.e. the Bears, etc.) got hosed just like home buyers in 2007. You should be impressed that our only signing was to strengthen our backup QB in case Smith gets injured during our march to the playoffs.

The FA selection didn't contribute much last year

and The FO is missing the boat again.Other than Dre (ufa ) and Poshos (signed elsewhere ) the rest of them didn’t help. This morning, a FA OL from the Colts ( Winners ) sign with another team. Granted, he may or may not be a starter, lets sign some players and let them try out to win a spot. and if not ,cut them. We got nothing to lose if they don’t make the team. Standing Pat is not going to help ! Standing still is not an option ! DO SOMETHING !!!!
This is meant to be constructive to improve our chances. And lets not take it for granted that the Division will be handed to us this year, although it seems like it might be.

by LASVEGASNINER on Mar 17, 2010 11:55 AM PDT reply actions

Standing pat IS an option. Not paying for over-priced, aging free agents is not the way to build this team. We need all the cap space we can get to extend Willis, VD, Franklin, Goldson, and pay two 1st rounders this year.

Who said over price / over age players ? I didn't !

getting better back ups is what I said, did you consider what we paid out last year ! Not every FA demands top Dollar. If you remenber last year, they were around $20 million under thr Cap. Besides, they earn a certain NFL salary during Training camp. We don’t pay unless it’s a guarentee contract.

I hope we sign Ayodele

3 years younger, some Takeo insurance, and then potentially 3 years (more or less) more of solid Ted play.

As for Carr, kid has a good attitude…he’s the backup until he’s better than Smith. Hill was done, everyone knew it once Alex supplanted him. What pressure was there on Alex to perform then? At least now he has someone who wants to start and hasn’t had his day in the sun in SF yet. It’s a 2 year deal…I don’t think we’re that much worse off.

I can’t wait for the draft. I’ve followed this years crop FAR more than ever before. I only wish we weren’t losing tackles along the way (Pashos, Sims). What if we take BPA and end up with no Tackle in the 1st? I know it’s a deep draft so we’ll hope we can get a solid RT in the 2nd…but I was hoping for a stud…maybe Solari and Brown mold a raw kid into a stud…here’s hoping.

My thoughts exactly

I been waiting since the super bowl to see what moves we make. New special teams coach"CHECK". New O-Line coach “CHECK”. Then our blockbuster move is David Carr. I’m lost on that one. My optimistic side see’s a former number one pick who had talent but got abused due to the lack of an O-Line for his whole career. My intellect says"why didn’t we keep our three guys, and pick up a rookie in the later round.
Also T.O. is sitting home doing sit ups, and running up hills on the Jerry Rice program, and we don’t reach out, and grab him? Are we trying to win games or what…Let’s see how the remainder of the off-season pans out..DeSean Woods, Kwame Harris, Kentwan Balmer, Glenn Coffee, Pascoe Bear? We cannot afford another poor draft class. And last year our block-buster FA aquisition caught ONE PASS…C’mon front office! Grow a set man…
