Derek Anderson talking to Arizona Cardinals; Charlie Whitehurst to sign Chargers tender offer

I'll add more details later, but ESPN is reporting that Charlie Whitehurst has told the Chargers he will sign the one-year tender offer.  Additionally, Derek Anderson is reportedly "on the verge of signing a deal with the Arizona Cardinals."

I'm in class so can't go into more detail right now, but this is obviously worthy of discussion.  Anybody think Anderson can have success in Arizona and unseat Matt Leinart?  And if so, with this potential signing how do we view the Cardinals in 2010?

Whitehurst

I guess this means that the Hawks will probably want to sign Bradford or Clausen. They will definitely need a QB in the draft somewhere. There’s not really anymore free agent QB’s they could go after.

I think Whitehurst is going to Seattle.

Not sure what this means on the Bradford/Clausen front.

Whitehurst

signing his tender just means that San Diego can trade him to Seattle for less than a 3rd round pick if they choose.

Leinart

Some of the NFLN analysts think that Leinart won’t be the starter by the first regular season game. Michael Lombardi said that specifically. Personally, I can’t see Anderson as the guy whose going to be better than Leinart. Either way, they both are not very good.

Anderson is a better fit for their offense

We’ll see what happens though.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Better fit?

In what sense? Arizona is a passing team, Anderson is not a very good passer. One lucky year is not enough to convince me he is any good. The one thing he has going for him is that he is only 26. But that’s about it.

Even then, it was really one fantastic half year followed by a rather pedestrian half year. His second half that season wasn’t even all that great.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

I’m not convinced that he is anything more than a back up, that’s for sure.

I like Anderson alright, but he is known as “Leadfoot” for a good reason. I think Leinart showed he can take the reigns of Arizona. He showed maturity in that Tennessee game this past season. This coming from someone who is by no means a Leinart fan.

by Amigo on Mar 17, 2010 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Arizona likes to pass the ball deep

Anderson’s only good attribute is his deep ball accuracy.

Matt Leinart likes to dink and dunk.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

so accurate that he threw 10 Int’s vs. 3 td’s. Good for us… more deep passes to pick off.

If he get’s the starting job, prediction:

7 TD’s, and 18 INT’s before he’s yanked for Leinart to come in and do about 2% better than that.

That was with Todd Haley

Whisenhunt used a lot more short passes and quick reads this year. The longest reception one of our receivers had last year was 45 yards and that was against the Rams.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.

by JoeCB1991 on Mar 18, 2010 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

WHAT?

Kurt Warner’s longest pass play all year was 45 yds., one of only 2 passes over 40 yds. all year, which by the way ranked him 42nd in the league. There are only 32 teams!
Larry Fitzgerald longest Rec. was 34 yds., which ranked him 156th.
The Cardinals use a short to medium range passing game based on accuracy and getting the ball out quickly, although this year, with Leinart at QB and the running game improved they will use more deep play action.

who knows what he can do.

Wow, I can’t imagine anybody being available who would be more attractive option to start for that team than Leinart. I mean, unless the coaches there just really don’t like him at all.

His work ethic has always been the question

But Wisenhunt has said that Leinart is finally serious this year. Whether or not that will help his game is the question. Kurt Warner sort of slammed him for it too here in AZ on a radio station during an interview. Either way, their QB situation go a lot worse when Warner decided to hang ’em up.

"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.

by Drew K on Mar 17, 2010 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

OK at best.

I don’t think Anderson is the answer. Him and Leinart are about the same level. Leinart has more potential but has not lived up to it. I think that whoever starts on this team next year is going to be OK at best. They are rebuilding anyway. They have a lot of question marks with all the players they have lost. The 49ers have a good shot next year. If anything Seattle will give them the most fits.

by LPG on Mar 17, 2010 11:35 AM PDT reply actions

Leinart has one start in 2-1/2 years....

since game 5 of his 2nd year when he got hurt. So how has he not lived up to his potential. Should AZ have benched Warner just so Leinart could play? And if you think Sea is the 2nd best team in the division, well that is just stunning.

by toolman234 on Mar 18, 2010 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Neither...

of these things make a difference for the Niners. They should’ve won the division last year even when the Cards had Warner. And Seattle isn’t improved in any way. Anything short of a division title this year is a huge disappointment.

DO you guys ever wonder if our speculation on the seahawks' QB needs in the draft

are just as misguided as everyone’s assumptions we were going after Sanchez last year?

It makes sense to me that they’d take clausen at 6 or 14 but then again…maybe not?

by foosball4949 on Mar 17, 2010 12:45 PM PDT reply actions

Unless they are content with Mike Teel as the quarterback of the future, they need to get a QB somewhere in the draft. Even if they get Whitehurst, I’d say they still go QB somewhere. If they do get Whitehurst though, it may be safe to say that they won’t go QB in the first. Hasselbeck could be done after this year… and if he gets injured again, he may hang ’em up mid season.

Please stop double-spacing after periods.

It is improper format. Every article posted on this Web site uses improper format. It doesn’t matter which style guide you go by — they all require one space after period. I know you aren’t journalism students, but even MLA and APA style guides require one space. We stopped double spacing two decades ago. Can we fix this problem? It would make ninersnation.com much more realistic.

I want to ban him.

Really, if he is screaming bloody murder about double spaces after periods it’s only going to get worse from here. It’s about as nebulous of a visual issue as anyone can find. It’s not the blog’s business to adhere to everyone’s pet peeve.

What is next? A graphic artist complaining the gray background color doesn’t precisely color compliment the gold/burgundy color scheme? You guys should really be using the HTML gray color code #c5c5c5 instead of #c3c3c3, after all HTML coding standards no longer adhere to the 256 Web-safe colors model, not even W3C requires the standard and the industry expanded to the full RGB color spectrum 5 years ago. Can we fix this problem? It would make ninersnation.com much more realistic.

by bignerd on Mar 17, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Dude it's acceptable

I have a journalism degree and there’s nothing wrong with it. In fact, there are text formats that recognize a double-space after a period as the start of a new sentence and automatically will capitalize the first letter after the period. So why should there be such a major issue with it?

This is straight from the MLA website:

“Because it is increasingly common for papers and manuscripts to be prepared with a single space after all punctuation marks, this spacing is shown in the examples in the MLA Handbook and the MLA Style Manual. As a practical matter, however, there is nothing wrong with using two spaces after concluding punctuation marks unless an instructor or editor requests that you do otherwise.”

There is nothing wrong with double-spacing after periods.

by Mdizzle138 on Mar 17, 2010 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions

AP certainly looks down on it with a mighty stank-eye. I’m not sure what Chicago style has to say about it. And I’ve already made my personal arguments regarding the issue in another thread. I don’t see a point to repeat myself.

However, if you are going to do it, consistency is key.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Mar 17, 2010 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

If you’re going to publish something in a newspaper, then I understand that it’s a waste of ever important space. However it isn’t grammatically incorrect to use two spaces after a period. Like you said, consistency is key. So long as you people don’t switch back and forth then I think there’s nothing wrong with one space or two spaces. But that’s just me.

meh

Derek Anderson, Matt Leinart…either way I think the one two punch of Alex and Carr sets us up with the strongest QB position in the NFCW this coming season, with Smith as the uncontested starter unless he really messes up in TC. Derek Anderson was the sexy choice in, what, 2007? Back when the KC Chiefs got a little feisty…but he hasn’t done much since then. What’s up with Seattle? What are they doing now that Wallace is in detroit? Will Hasselbeck be able to play next season? i haven’t been keeping up.

by sleepyotter on Mar 17, 2010 9:01 PM PDT reply actions

Anderson Could be Great!

I have played with and against Derek Anderson while growing up. I have also followed his career with the Browns and now with the Cards. I would have to say that yes everybody is right he has not been very consistant over the years while with the Browns. I also have to point out that Edwards and Winslow had outstanding seasons in ’07 also but nobody jumped on their backs in ’08 for playing like crap. You do know that a QB is really only as good as the recievers he is working with. Having a good running game helps more then most people realize.

I think that if Anderson can get in and pick up the Cards offence quickly and get on the same page as Fitzgerled and Doucett then they could go along way. The Cards have a much better offencive line and with the one two punch of Hightower and Wells from out of the back field the other teams not going to know if they should drop back for the long ball or push up and try to stop the run. Thats why Warner played so well in this offence because he had the duel threat. With out it your just screwed!
