49ers Sign CB Karl Paymah
Fooch's Note: Any thoughts on Paymah? Camp body or someone who can compete with Tarell Brown and company for legit playing time outside the base 3-4?
I don't know much about the guy... Probably just adding more depth again. Sing is obviously confident in the team he fields on a weekly basis. Makes the draft even more intriguing.
From 49ers.com
The San Francisco 49ers announced on Wednesday that they have signed free agent CB Karl Paymah to a one-year deal.
Paymah (6-0, 195) enters his sixth NFL season after originally being drafted in the third round (76th overall) by the Denver Broncos in 2005. Paymah has played in 72 career games (seven starts) and has registered 67 tackles, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and 14 passes defensed. He spent his first four seasons with the Broncos before signing with Minnesota, in 2009. Paymah played in 12 games (two starts) and recorded 14 tackles as well as 11 special teams tackles last season.

Looks like there was some interest with him last year too. Fooch had a small article on him last March

We can expect a lot of these hires, we are like a poor man's Patriots.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.
I think yall are going at him 2 hard
maybe he just need 2 be coached up he was taking in the 3rd round so someone saw some talent in him. And even though his stats are not over whelming he does manage 2 be around the ball ,we had roman at safety and i know its a different position but roman could’nt buy a play or pic ,but this dude looks like at the least he can make good special team plays so lets give a little break.
I think you are missing my point, so I will elaborate.
A poor man’s Patriots would be a good point. Get guys with the skill set to match our scheme, instead of over paying for names.

Agreed
The concept of having a system with interchangeable parts and a few superstars is how the football dynasties work, and the Patriots are a good example of this. I don’t know anything about Paymah, but the idea of non-geriatric depth at a skill position with experience is very appealing.

Thank you and if you look at
his short bio he is always around the ball ,were not asking him to come in here and be a shut down corner. But we are asking him 2 be a piece of the puzzle we have one of THE BEST DC and i trust him to put this dude in a position were he can succeed.
I have to question how great the DC is at personnel. He let that bum CB cover a rookie man to man and was toasted.

Well I question the DC comment because we haven't made the playoffs in how many years now?
It’s very slowly but surely improving, but not one of the best by any means.
dont like
this signing. this guy was not too solid for the vikings last year and if you ask some vikings fans about him, they will seriously tear him apart. i hope he only goes in at corner during dime/quarter packages.
He should at least fill the special teams hole that hudson left though. he wasnt too bad on that front
He'd be a fine 4th corner behind Brown, Spencer and Clements
upgrade over Hudson (no disrespect intended) but he’ll probably still be on the roster bubble come end of training camp, especially if we draft a CB, which I really think we will
Yours looks like the best assessment of him
Mainly a body to fill the 4th corner spot while we’re developing whomever we end up drafting. On an upside, he apparently has never been cut in preseason. I would think that makes him a viable talent.
Exactly, plus a ST guy, can't have enough of those.

Let’s not jump the gun… the guy may not even make the team.

From what I was told by a Vikings fan...
He couldn’t even make their ST squad.
Yeah…Apparently he’s absolute garbage in coverage.
i heard the same thing from my Vikings fan brother.

He made Crabtree INFAMOUS singlehandedly.
Brown is not that good to me. He has some upside, but I don’t expect him to be a starter, he whiffs on tackles, that’s why i don’t see how people like him and didn’t want Chromartie.

Brown still has room to grow
Gotta give him this year to make that decision.
Thank you it just shows how media is east-coast bias
because as soon as this trade went down NFL live and mark schlereth said they had the best 2 shut down corners in the NFL. Im like this dude is such a finess player he can’t tackle right ( and lets not get into the baby-mama-drama ) he had a break out year but that new york media is going 2 turn on him quiker than a doberman pincher when they see how this dude whiffs on tackles lol.
I think Brown can still improve
Cromartie maybe was too thick-headed.

Hey i don't no dude that much
but what i read right there and what i take from that is that this dude is a ball magnet and a playmaker that was a real nice pick-up and if this dude plays good i can see him challenging 4 that three spot.
No because when the Vikings starting corner went down he wasn't the replacement.
They had holes in their secondary and he didn’t play much. The Broncos CB’s aside from Bailey aren’t that good and he was released, so no I don’t see it. DO you?

maybe he doesn't like playing
in 10 degree weather. He’s from Cali
But you have to go outside to get there
he said himself he didn’t like it
Great, wait until we have to play a playoff game on the road in GB,, then what?
Does he take himself out of the lineup?

Sorry 4 taking 2 long 2 respond(went 2 the store 4 wifey )
but lott i remember reading about scott mcillop and they were saying he’s slow in space and really isnt a good practice player but when he’s in the game he’s a ball magnet. And when i read some of his career stats he gets force fumbles he gets pass deflections so you can tell he’s a impulse player and those force fumblesand pass deflections add 2 turnovers. He may not be good in space but he could be a good situanational players so maybe thats what the niners are looking at.
His statistics match what some players do in a season. I am not expecting him to be more than a 4th CB or ST player though.
His numbers aren’t eye popping, Goldson had more FF’s in one year than he has had in 5 or 6. All around the ball? I don’t think so, otherwise he would have kept his job on the Vikings who will be entering the season with their best CB rehabbing.

Plus when did minnesota fans opinions
been worth anything what have they won lately what have they won period there still bitter from coughing up a superbowl appearance .If minnesota had a track record or a history of winning i would put there opinions up there but there history is known 4 choking even though i would listen 2 there opinions i would’nt put them up there if it was coming from pittsburg or even dallas or the patriots he played 4 2 teams that has’nt won jack in about ten years so there opinions i would take with a grain of salt.
I understand
But minnesota did go far last year,And they have always fielded a good secondary.Second they do have talented coaches.I do agree he will only be a great special teamer,as well as a fourth corner, while we develope a great corner hopefully haden or wilson.still a solid pick up at a great price.Did we not need some solid play on special teams?maybe a change to cali will ignite some fire and he might surprise us.
I Agree
We have made some weak offseason moves R.Lott ,but i think we want to pick up alot of our talent from the draft.the niners did a pretty good job of that in the eighties, right.Montana, rice, board, lott, craig, taylor, jones,But i am still waiting to see some of are pieces fit togather.we have a lot riding on the play of alex smith, and he is no montana or even elvis grbac.hope two years with same coordinator proves me wrong butwe shall see.remember those niners had the best defense, lets not forget Haley, eric davis, merton hanks,Bryant young, stubblefeild,we did add some talent through free agency, ken norton,plummer,mccoy,deion(1year)sanders.so as we see it takes several good drafts to create what we had .Lets give them some time and another good draft or two before we ask for yorks head, and singualtary a couple more seasons to bring back that fire we used to have
Who's not giving them time? I am stressing patience, I just don't think he is all over the ball(paymah)
That’s a fact.

For the amount of time he actually played his stats look fairly good
27 tackles, 2 PD, 1 FF
Definitely an improvement over Marcus Hudson’s play

Exactly, I am not calling this a bad move, I did say it was Patriot-esque type addition.

yeah i don't understand what all the panty wringin is about
the guy will be the gunner on ST to replace hudson. He isn’t great—he’s a body who has some skills. He probably wont play much in the secondary outside of emergency situations.
If we draft Mays
We may run sets with extra DB’s more frequently. So that alone makes this a good acquisition.
I Like The Signing
we have to assume he was brought in to replace Marcus Hudson, if that is the case it is without a doubt an upgrade over Hudson. When you can upgrade at any position on the 53 man roster it is a positive. We have done that twice this 0ff-season
Carr+ Paymah= Upgrade over Hill+Hudson And that is a good thing

I'm watching the two games he started last year
on the Pittsburgh game right now. He’s actually got great coverage but appears timid in run support. He looks like he’s afraid to tackle—as Deon says he’s making a “business decision” every time. He got sent on a CB blitz and didn’t even hit the RB, just tried to dance around him.
Like I said his coverage skills are really good though.
