BREAKING NEWS: SCOT MCCLOUGHAN TO STEP DOWN AS GENERAL MANAGER?
http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2010/03/mccloughan-considering-stepping-down-as-gm.html
"Scot McCloughan is considering stepping down as 49ers general manager, sources told The Press Democrat this evening.
The shocking development to the organization's top football executive takes place just five weeks before the NFL Draft, in which the 49ers own two first-round draft picks. The reasons McCloughan is contemplating resigning were not immediately known."
While many of us have complained about Scot, what does this represent of the team that something like this happens SO CLOSE to the draft?

BAD TIMING FOR THE NINERS
49ers are the best there was the best there is and the best there ever will be

I think McC is quiting rather then the Niners firing. That’s if this is true.

I tend to agree
it’s one of those “please resign before you fire” things. Horrible timing though, especially this close to the draft. Would Paarag Marathe be the guy then?
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
I really don’t think the Niners want to fire McC. I think he either just wants to leave or he has some personal problem. What I really want to hear is that this is just a big fat rumor.

Maicco's blog says that people were seen relocating his files
and that he left the building after his afternoon meeting with the top brass
McCloughan met Wednesday behind closed doors with the 49ers’ upper management at the 49ers’ team offices in Santa Clara, sources said. The group included Jed York, executive vice president of football and business operations Paraag Marathe, vice president of football affairs Keena Turner and Michael Rossi, a retired vice chair of BankAmerica Corp., who works as a senior advisor to the 49ers.
McCloughan left the 49ers’ team offices after the meeting and files were relocated from his office this afternoon.

Files relocated to where? To another office? Maybe he’s getting a bigger office… lol.
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
Heh
Owners fly back early, have a closed door session to let him know that he can take the day off early and he’ll get the nice corner office with the view instead of the basement office next to the water heater.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
They wouldn't fire him right now. They wouldn't ask him to resign right now.
One has to assume he’s got a personal issue.
Good bon voyage homey
please this bad timing is getting over-hyped they said it was bad timing when nolan got fired the media even made him into a sympathetic feature, while we were free-falling.We know what we need in the draft this close and where is this steve mariucci where did he get experience from sitting next 2 dion sanders plus he acts like still holds contempt 4 being fired after a playoff loss.So we fire one GM everbody claimed he did’nt know what he was doing 2 hire someone who’s never done it before wow thats smart .

Fire the beat writer for fase reporting...
Barrows would serve the Press Democrat much better in my opinion. Maiocco should be working for TMZ

MM just reported what happened.
We are speculating on what is going on. This is not false reporting.. it is simply, reporting what he found out..
It could only be that they found some structural problems in McC’s office and asked him to temp move to another office while they fix his.

sounds like something is going down. all of the local reporters have caught wind of something.

I have MM’s but not his on my twitter and I knew if I said anything to anyone they’d ask for the link LOL

He's leading
which in my opinion is irresponsible. If you’re going to “break” news, make sure it’s ligit. He does this a lot.
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
I someone sees T.O jump off a highrise building and reports it without knowing why or the outcome
As in.. did he die or land on a giant spongie…. it is still good reporting. get the information out there.
We all saw that.. and were anxiously waiting for more and included some weird speculations, some just shy of alien abduction…. I think it was good reporting. rather that being scooped.. he got the basic news out
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
You’re talking about death versus moving files. There’s a pretty significant difference in the two.
I respectfully disagree. I don’t believe in the report whatever and have to eat crow 50% of the time approach. To me, it makes a reporter seem less credible. Everytime there’s a new headline, I’d rather be sure than scratching my head going, “can I really believe this?”. Never cry wolf in reporting.
He’d rather get half of what he “breaks” wrong just to be the first in line to “break” the other 50% in which he guesses on. That just seems irresponsible and it’s just my opinion. I know there’s alot of people around here that take everything he reports at face value but I don’t, I can’t, I’ve been mislead too many times. I see him for what he is and I feel there is better reporters out there for his specific job.
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
I think he was pretty clear in this report as to what was speculation and what was reporting
I have no problem with Maiocco’s reporting at all. Now when he goes on to guess about 49er moves in free agency and draft I stop listening
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
He said files were being moved from an office and then went on to specualte…. speculation is never good reporting. Report facts when they come about, otherwise you come off a bit like The National Enquirer
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
I think it's safe to say
he was pretty darned accurate this time around.
by mr. instigator on Mar 18, 2010 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I think in this case.. the speculation was only because of what he was reporting
It was obvious that if his files were being moved out..that the next 2 questions would be, WHY? and, WHO will take over? But what he did report was accurate in itself.
Drew, I do agree that both he and MB do put their own feelings into things sometimes, or even many times and that isn’t always good.. but they do have a connection and they have have some insight…. but I have also seen where the insight here was more accurate.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I have no problems with Matt Barrows because he reports facts as they roll in and his speculation isn’t so subjective.
Maiocco is the type of guy that takes a reported chipped toe nail and makes it in to a career ending broken ankle before any credible details get in to him.
"If you're not first, you're last" -Reese Bobby.
Boy do we practice panic on this blog
if they can’t get it together this far out then we should’nt have a team this is not 1 or 2 weeks away its long over-due you ask me don’t let 8-8 mask all the other disappointing seasons we had with scott repeat after me this is the NFL ( which means not for long ) and scott has made some bad decisions while he was in office so good riddens.
Ok here's a way out theory (and wholly speculating/thinking out loud)
Could the catalyst or the last straw be that thing with PacMan? It kinda seemed to break that 9ers were all interested in looking him over and then they tossed out a retraction of sorts saying Sing wasn’t planning on going to look him over and instead was going to something in SF that seemed very very benign and kind of something to do otherwise to keep him out of the way of reporters. Could be that McC tried to set that up and Sing flew off the handle and maybe the Yorks too.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Mar 18, 2010 4:40 AM PDT reply actions
dont think we've heard the end of this
it would be a terrible mistake to have a GM leave under any circumstances this close to the draft, in the middle of FA, etc. Scot’s a good guy too, I can’t say I agree with everything but the team is building really well and has lots of promise. I wouldn’t want to see him go just yet.
"If I were to walk down a dark alley in a bad part of town, I'd want Ray Brown with me. And if I were to have a nice dinner at a fine restaurant, I'd want Ray Brown with me." The Late Great McKittrick
Scott has drafted some talent that being said,
if he was quiting a few weeks before the draft. You would hope that Sing could do the draft. Would one think that it would be an harder than drafting a fansty team ? Sing has been out scouting players himself. Hell, he was a big part of getting THE BEAST we call WILLIS.
Myth...
Sing didn’t think Willis was anything special before the draft. It was McC who pushed hard to get Willis. And do you really think Sing would be best to do the drafting? Honestly, I’d rather just pick one of the scouts to do it.

they stick to it now that McC is out.

what if it's a FO restructuring?
not the bad kind where everyone get’s fired either…different titles, etc? Maybe they brought in a new person to do some things and they’re changing some roles?
all I can do is guess at this point but it’s weird that Schaffer says McC isn’t stepping down yet the team hasn’t announced anything, nor would it make sense for them to fire him at this point right before the draft.
"If I were to walk down a dark alley in a bad part of town, I'd want Ray Brown with me. And if I were to have a nice dinner at a fine restaurant, I'd want Ray Brown with me." The Late Great McKittrick
I had no reaction really. I know he wouldn't trade up, and I am focused on that being the best move, so my attitude is meh, since he is still here.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.
Millen?
All right I barely ever post on here but seeing that Millen was even posted as an option to replace McCloughlan almost made me piss all over the monitor, and the fact that a few people actually voted for Millen to take over is beyond stupidity or humor. To this day I wish that I had a Wonka-Vision tv so that I could piss all over his face every time I see him on tv acting like he knows all there is to know about scouting and football in general…..F#$! YOU MILLEN! Stay away from SF!
I'd take him for one draft, he would trade up for E Berry.
LOL………….JK

No
knowing Millen he would trade up for a WR.
it's done
Reason: “Personal issues” RT @nancygay reporting that Scott McCloughan is out as #49ers GM http://bit.ly/9YtYYQ (via ChronLiveCSN)

Well, now that it's done ...
Here’s hoping for the best for McLoughan. I have to figure this is a pretty intense personal issue to cause this to happen so quickly at this time of year.
The book on Scotty won’t be written for another year or two. He didn’t blow me away as a GM/PPD … but I don’t think he sucked, either.
He drafted Bamm Bamm, His idea, so just in that.. He was a success in my book.
It is like, if the new temp GM drafts Berry, many will automatically make him a saint among GMs. ;-)
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
mcc
when i first heard this my reaction something other than football related (sexual harassment in the front office, drugs, alcohol). but now it seems it is more of a personality issue (with Singletary? York?) whatever it is leaving 1 month before the draft is crazy. the reason it is called “an extended leave of absence” is because of the timing. mccloughan is definitely out already, but since the draft is only one month away there is some kind of “no compete” clause in the settlement/severance. mccloughan has knowledge of the 49ers draft board and needs and will not allow him to be hired or talk with another team until after the draft, but believe it, he’s gone now.
What about bringing in...
someone like Bill Cowher to be GM? I know he was a coach, but the man seems to know football. Thoughts?
by SanFranFan4Life on Mar 19, 2010 12:29 AM PDT reply actions
I don’t think someone prominent from outside the organization would want to come here under the circumstances. This is a possible make or break year for anyone without a last name of York. The division looks like its there for the taking with Arizona losing players, the Seahawks with a rookie coach rebuilding and the Rams….well being the Rams. If they stumble and don’t make the playoffs this year, all Heck is going to break loose and no one might be left standing.
