CB Scenario Looking Forward
There isn't much youth in the CB corps for the 49ers right now. Of the guys who have started games at CB, Spencer and Brown are the youngest at 28 and 25. Harris and Clements are well over 30.
Seriously, what are the 49ers going to do if Harris, Clements, Spencer, Brown are all back and playing fairly well? If they draft a CB in 2010, who's spot does he take, as a rookie?
He could play Special Teams, but isn't that what Paymah was brought in for (replacing Hudson)? How many CB's will the team be able to roster in 2010?
Brown isn't going anywhere cause Harris and Clements are close to being done (Harris maybe already is). Spencer played solidly in 2010 and is the type of physical press corner the 49ers like.
Clements is scheduled to make 98 Billion dollars in the coming years...and depending on how he plays in Training Camp and into the 2010 season, might not be worth the money in 2011.
In 2011 the team is probably looking at Spencer, Brown, and a 2010 draftee as top 3 corners (maybe not in that order). Probably drafting another CB in either 2010 or 2011 (2 total in two years). Somehow I doubt Keith Smith or Karl Paymah are going to be much more than ST/Backup players if they are even on roster in 2011.
What does Niners Nation think the 49ers will do with regards to the CB strategy over the next two FA/Draft years?

I doubt Harris will be back
And even if he is I doubt he’s got anything left anyways.
That only leaves Clements, Spencer, and Brown as guys you actually want on the field and none of them is really a #1 corner. So I would certainly snatch up Joe Haden at #13 if he’s there, he would probably at least play nickel over Brown and could possibly start over Clements (depending on how Clements comes back from his injury).
But I don’t think the Niners are in any jeopardy of having too many corners at this point, if anything it is the other way around, at least for the time being.

In jeopardy of having
too many CB’s who wouldn’t be on the field on defense barring injury though…Keith Smith, Karl Paymah, not going to play in Nickel. Do you play the rookie or Brown then if Clements and Spencer are the starters?
2011 is the real intriguing year to me. Let’s say Clements plays good, but not worthy of his big number ($). He’s released or traded and then we’re left with Spencer, Brown, Rookie. Are Brown or the Rookie ready to start next year and be solid? I hope so but we don’t know where Brown is right now. Lost his job to Bly…can he get better or is he maxed out?
I just don’t like having two guys in Smith and Paymah who don’t figure to see the field. One of them should be replaced with a guy who has some upside.

Well yeah
I’m all for replacing guys with better players. Smith and Paymah should not stop the Niners from drafting anybody.
And if Haden were drafted, it would be a big disappointment I would think if he couldn’t beat out Tarell Brown, especially in 2011. Brown’s more of a nickel corner, Haden is supposed to be a stud.

Haden is probably a slight upgrade over Spencer
He’s a press corner, physical, not the absolute fastest guy on the field. But honestly, he’s what the 49ers like in a CB. I sincerely hope we end up with a good CB who can play Nickel or at least dime CB right away and hopefully supplant Brown, possibly Spencer if Clements remains in the picture. Then I still think you have to get another future starter at CB for when Clements leaves and eventually Spencer (probably have 3 or 4 years left with ’Tae)

Agreed
I think they probably won’t worry about Spencer’s replacement for a few more years yet though. It’s more that Clements is probably about done as a NIner and they don’t have much/any depth other than Brown.

I didn't say that
I said I think they’ll be much better with Haden. I also don’t think Walt Harris will be a contributor for the Niners this year.

I do not want Haden on the 49ers
There are quality CBs that can be found later in the draft, and I think Haden is overrated. If he was being taken towards the end of the first round I would agree more with the pick. There are other needs on the team (S and RT) that need to be addressed before CB.
all ya'll are sick
Clements is still nice. I think he needs to be tested for marijuanna though his eyes looked low quite often when he was on camera. as far as haden I hope he gets overlooked by us so people can see how wack he is with another team. I don’t want him to be on our team when people realize it. I think he would be a nice 2nd round but other then that no CB is worthy of a first round selection this year
Woooooooow did you really go there so because he's black and his eyes are low he looks like
he can be on some erb are you on some erb because this sounds personal???
I know O.G walt is getting up there and it seems
like everbody on this site is doubting him ( just kidding ) but im a believer i think he was solid before he got hurt and i think he’s going 2 really push ( spencer ) if he gets the chance 4 that 2nd spot. So i can’t wait 2 see im a big fan of his and i know we are going have 2 eventually have 2 turn those positions over 2 the youngsters but i think this year the 30 and over crew will take us straight 2 the playoffs and who knows what we do once we get there but i do know we will do some damage once we get there BET THAT!!

I actually think you have valuable input at times (as we all have) but your simple refusal to use proper english as far as punctuation and such makes many of us give up on reading your posts. If you consider it worth your time to post, could you please also consider it worth your time to try and use proper english? I would like to be able to read your posts and gather the value in them but am precluded by doing that by your not respecting us nor your post enough to make that effort.
Thanks,

What's NN's take on Chris Cook?
Did I read he showed up for pro-day out of shape? Thought his combine measurables (6’2" 210ish, 4.45 40) made him a 2nd/3rd round consideration as a big corner who still has some speed.

The whole idea is this:
Nate, Tae, Brown…after that…if one goes down who do you want to step in? Keith Smith? Karl Paymah? Maybe they wow in camp but thus far you cant take that chance. Harris isn’t even signed AFAIK if he even has anything left in the tank beyond some mentoring or maybe a Nickel/Dime role for his experience.
You can’t have a huge dropoff of basically special teams CB’s after your Nickel CB. Or at least, you should be planning ahead if you’re in that boat. We need to draft a CB that projects to be a starting caliber guy in 2011.

I'd like to re-sign Dre Bly too.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

agreed
or some veteran who really can still play, even if only in a Nickel Role. Have to have 4 solid CB’s in this league.
