McCloughan Out as GM
Fanhouse reporting it's a done deal.
NOTE: This has been moved to the Front Page. Discuss your thoughts on McCloughan's departure. Hopefully some news develops and gives us all a clearer reason why McC is out.
UPDATE: PFT has the story up too, and mentions Trent Baalke will likely be taking over most of McC's duties.

Well, we're waiting....

what the

This is…really flippin confusing. Personal matters? I mean, Scot was just recenty talking about how he wanted the team to go, and then this?! What changed as of a couple weeks ago?
CJ SPILLER, YOU KILLED OUR GM
LaCanfora says it may be temporary...
…I sure hope so.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
the fanhouse article
says he texted them and said “I’m fine, moving on”
doesn’t sound temporary.

Screwed...
Why now of all times? This is unbelievable. I just hope that they stick to his draft board and don’t give the “trigger” to Sing. If they do, they’ve learned absolutely nothing from the Mike Nolan debacle and this franchise is likely to regress next year. Just let his player personel guy take over.
Oh, and I doubt this is temporary.
As was stated it was a personal issue
it’s my experience that personal issues don’t go “oh sorry you’re in the middle of something..let me wait a bit then. Just get back to me when you’re ready”
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Mar 18, 2010 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Do you really believe that....
It sounds like Jed decided he wanted to clean house and started with McC. Why else would they need to keep restructuring the FO? This is the third time I believe since season’s end. I just think it’s something they don’t want to air out right now to save face for both of them.
by 9thevolution on Mar 18, 2010 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions
I can only go with what information is currently available
it is listed as personal issues. Until I hear signs of otherwise I’m not going to go making wild guesses off of simple statements. As the saying goes: “Life happens”. As far as what we are going to do in this draft, if the board is not already made up by now then that would worry me even more. Yes he will not be in the war room but numerous people will and all having their own say. Not exactly happy about this but I’m not going to play chicken little and think the sky is falling. Nor am I going to try and see things that don’t at least at this time exist.

What would be wrong with Sing drafting this year.
We may have Oher instead of Crabtree, and then we would maybe get players like LaFell and Bey Bey Thomas to play wideout, what the heck could be wrong with that.

This doesn't indicate Singletary having more pull than normal with the draft.
It has never been 100 percent clear the amount f power one carries. So what says Sing is the one making the decisions now? Nothing, let’s not over-react on this. There is no evidence of Sing not being able to draft players and Sing being able to. Who are you to barely qualify him as a coach.

If were going 2 worry about anything is who’s going 2 slide in next but ol’ boy is gone so we should move on next?
the thing is
the situation is still cloudy. Is it a leave? Is it a firing? Is it a resignation? It’s all still sketchy in terms of details right now.

The San Francisco 49ers are cutting ties with their general manager, Scot McCloughan, over what has been described as a “personal matter” not related to team issues.
This statement worries me. If it’s not related to team issues, what could it be? I don’t think Singletary should be given the trigger on draft day, because Singletary himself has said in the past he’s no scouting expert and had to be sold on Patrick freakin’ Willis by McC. With McCloughan out, Singletary’s voice – regardless of who steps in temporary or not – just got louder in personnel decisions. That scares me.

Sing already had final say on personnel decisions, but I don’t think he had final say in scouting, FA and Draft decisions. Now that McC is gone, his voice will get louder, which kinda scares me. I think he needs to focus on being a better coach and these decisions need to be left to the FO and their personnel.

Seriously, this is poor timing and a puzzling situation. I’ll need to hear the whole story, but I’m now more concerned with how this draft will go when the friggin’ GM (who has brought in good talent) has just left….
Bad News
Whatever your thoughts on McC, it’s not good to lose your GM this close to the draft and put the picks into the hands of someone who’s never been ‘the man’ on draft day—no matter how long he’s been involved w/ player personnel.
Theres 2 MUCH whinning on here thats the truth
we know what we want in the draft we know who fits on this team show some confidance in your team and less whinning thank you.

Theorizing
His lawyer contradicts whats been put out there to the public. If it wasn’t voluntary then I’m quite sure it wasn’t personal matters. The only way it could be, would be if JED identified this “matter” as a big enough determent to be fired. Though they’re saying it’s mutual decision to part ways, wouldn’t that mean it’s a voluntary decision by McC.
Now, if Jed had to fly back from across seas to have a meeting with McC, and in the end someone(who’s not McC) cleaned out his desk, then I’m willing to guess this is an morality issue. (Hint hint: we could have a possible Woods, Matt Jones, Pac-man type of issue on our hands)
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 6. Jake Sharp 7.Preston Parker
Here's why I eliminated the difference of opinion issue
There’s still a lot of time for discussion of FA, Draft, Team matters..Lets remember in Dec Jed stated McC will be back for another season
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 6. Jake Sharp 7.Preston Parker
His lawyer didn't contradict anything in my mind
he is not leaving, he is taking an extended leave of absence. This was not settled on at the time the lawyer (or was it his agent?) was asked for a comment so he kept his mouth shut as far as the latter half. That’s what lawyers (and agents) do.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Mar 18, 2010 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Lawyer and Agent, I believe
where doesn’t the time line match up? Late last night Maicc reported news that McC might be stepping down.. then a half hour later there was news McC’s Lawyer/Agent said McC wouldn’t voluntarily step down
where’s the news about the extended leave of absence? ( or are you arguing against my theory with a theory of your own?)
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 6. Jake Sharp 7.Preston Parker
looked it up
“His agent said McCloughan will not resign from his post.” is what Maiocco said. And the direct quote from the agent is:
“Scot McCloughan is not resigning as general manager of the San Francisco 49ers,” Denver-based agent Peter Schaffer said moments ago in a brief phone interview.
Link; http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2010/03/agent-mccloughan-is-not-resigning.html
And the extended leave of absence is from a tweet by Adam Schefter : “49ers are giving general manager Scot McCloughan an extended leave of absence while he tends to personal issues.”
Link: http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter
So no I am not and don’t plan on making any theories as to what is going on here. I am simply taking things at face value. Purposefully trying not to roll off on possibly misguided theories but just remaining with the facts as they come in.

He’s gone and focus turns 2 the next person up i doubt singletery will let it sprinkle down and affect the team. But as time goes by NFL network still hasn’t brought it up so im starting do believe its just a rumor the show is almost over and still no word of it .
At least now all of those who claimed that Maiocco was wrong in reporting this
Or that that he made it up, should think before they talk next time.
Right now all me know is that he is not running the show for now.. nothing more.. he may actually have personal issues that are in the way, maybe a family illness or something… or it could be just that Jed or Sing wanted him out… we don’t know right now, and may never know the whole truth.

He wrote an article based on files being moved. If he had anymore insight than that, I am sure he would have revealed it then. He guessed and it paid off. That’s how I view it. I’d still like to see Maiocco go be a beat writer for the Browns since that’s his team. Barrows would be much better suited to write for the Press Democrat.

Extended Leave is the key thing. Baseball, Football, Basketball players all have family members die and play a couple days later. You get a week bereavement in real life, in NFL right before draft, you are lucky to get that. The Extended Part leads me to believe he has something he needs to deal with that will take time, like an addiction or God forbid, something wrong with him. But I highly doubt its a loved one passing away where he has to clean his desk out.

I'd be happy with Gerald McCoy. Or even Eric Berry.
Although I wish Clausen or Bradford were still available.

One of them will be there, Clausen or Bradford.
If I were GM, Ninersnation would call me the draft hustler.
Step 1 - Offer contract to Bushrod and give up my 49th pick.(RT)
Step 2 - move up to #5 Take Berry for BOTH first rounds and acquire a 2nd and 4th
Step 3 - 2nd round - M gilyard, 3rd - J Jerry, 4th AJ Jefferson, 4th Rafael Priest CB TCU, 5th Deji Karim, 6th - Alex Daniels DE Cincy, 7th Al Woods LSU
Bradford to Rams, Clausen to Redskins.
Maybe Clausen falls, but Bradford won’t be there at 6.

Chester Pitts must be wondering
wtf is going on. Did he still come for his visit today?
maybe
there was an altercation with Pitts?

It's supposed to be later this evening.
He’ll still meet with Singletary, Solari, and possibly Jed York.

“He’s not coming. He’s no longer welcome here. We’ll be doing the interview.”

Anyone else suspect that this may be at least partially connected to our inaction in free agency?
I’m not saying we’d have really chased after anyone this offseason, but the fact that we’ve made absolutely no attempt to make a play for anyone at all could be related to instability in FO, with special emphasis on a preoccupied “trigger man”.
I also agree with the sentiment that this is concerning most in that it tips the balance of the Coach/GM power scale. I like Singletary and all, but I really don’t want his opinion to have much (or in honesty, anything) to do with who we do or don’t bring into the organization.

i bet he got hammered on st. patricks day
drunk drove to santa clara and got tired of sing giving him shit/eyeballing him.
now hes goin to rehab.
isnt mccluhan irish?
I doubt it
McCloughan stated after the 2008 season that the 49ers were going to build through the draft.
Since then they have not been active in FA.
If the FO was uncomfortable with this idea they would have brought it up in 2008-2009

So maybe he really is gone?
Shefter response to my tweet:
I’m not saying he’s with niners. Just saying he’s not out yet. Eventually it’ll get there. But not there yet. Leave of absence for now.
Can’t figure out how to link it.

just read that too
sounds like he’s gone!
and from pft: “the temporary status allows for the 49ers and McCloughan to work out the contractual issues at stake.”
I am annoyed

my opinion...
from the way he says this, it seems like they forced him out as opposed to him just leaving, right?
That's what I'm assuming
He sounds content with what he did.
Although I see no reason as to why he would be forced out.
The 49ers have been preaching continuity since Sing was hired, and then they go and fire the GM 5 weeks before the draft.

That's my guess as well
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 6. Jake Sharp 7.Preston Parker
I don't know what to make of this...
But it will be interesting to see what happens in the draft and the rest of the FA period. And this kind of disruption, in such a key time, is probably not a GOOD thing! I still am keeping my faith in the FO (for now) and trying to stay optimistic, but I’m just sitting here, asking myself, “WTH is going on???”

McCloughan sent this message to a talk-show host for Sirius NFL Radio:
“Family needs to come first and I lost sight of that with my position at the 49ers. I will be back in league at some point and be very successful.”
Family? Do you think this is the real reason? I don’t think so.
I believe Scot doesn’t believe in the York ownership anymore and will resign with honor rather than to be fired and made a scapegoat for the sub-par seasons he’s had. He knows that his time has run out here and realizes that he is being set up to be Jed York’s scapegoat.
