PrintAs some of you have noticed, we've been getting quite a few spammers lately. On a somewhat related note, people can join the site right away with no waiting time. I've decided to change the settings so there is a 1-day waiting period for people to register at the site. Basically, once you register, you'll have to wait 24 hours to start posting. This might deter some people, but if you really want to be a part of this community, 24 hours is not exactly the end of the world.
I figure the upside to this is that spammers will likely go away (assuming they haven't already registered and have not yet been banned) and we'll hopefully get high quality members joining. Also, I can manually approve new members ahead of time if they look legit. I just wanted to give everybody a heads-up since I know we have a lot of lurkers that wait a bit to join.

Also, to Ninjames below, I think Clutchtree was just poking a little fun, not really trying to incite anything. The overreaction just made it more malicious.

That's enough, seriously.
There’s a couple things evident here.
1. You have bad grammar and are lazy with your posts.
2. It is STUPID of all of you here to constantly bring up Jay in EVERY THREAD before he even gets here. What’s more annoying then Jay’s grammar? All of you complaining about it in every single post on the site.
Jay, you make points occasionally and you are clearly passionate about your team. Why don’t you do us all a favor and just try and fix your grammar just a little bit and space out your posts a little bit? I’m not asking you to suddenly start using capitals and commas and everything perfectly—all I want of you is to maybe space up your posts a little bit, make it easier on the eyes so it’s more legible to read and not just a wall? I’m talking clear ends of one thought before the next.

This is where you should probably stop, think about what you’re saying and then proceed to comment. Nobody on this site has EVER made a derogatory comment about your race, lifestyle or where you grew up. The fact is that your grammar skills are well below the social norm and when people tried to help you and give suggestions on how to make your posts more legible, you became defensive for no apparent reason. You completely disregard punctuation, fail to capitalize and quite honestly, you miss on many grammar points that 10 year old kids pick up on. There is no need to call anyone names (redneck) when all we are trying to do it help. Sure we might poke fun but that’s part of the community my man. If you can’t take a joke then you might want to head over to the Eagles blog.. I hear they have been crying for years now.

I haven’t checked the new registration page if you already did this but you should include a football related question or football interests. So it might save you some time approving if those answers are not football related from spammers.
I haven't spent much time on NN in the last few months.
In the offseason, I get tired of mock drafts after the second or third revision, so seeing this site flooded with 50+ versions of it usually keeps me away.
That being said, I haven’t had any unfortunate run-ins with spammers.
…Also, this is the first I’ve seen of Jayjonna…and let me tell you, this guy is AWESOME! Just by his very existence, he seems to have turned this thread from a SUPER SRS spammer discussion to an all-out internet battle, in which jay seems perfectly content with dousing himself with gasoline to support the flame war against him.
Is every thread this amazing? I might have to make more regular stops.

okay i have cerebral palsy arthris and chronic fatigue as well i have a great life and loveing folks some days are better than other days i got a make-a-wish in 2001 and saw my favorite team the broncos it was the trip of a lifetime i wish everyone couild have gotten to enjoy that with me i know some of u hate the broncos and that okay but i bleed organ and bule for my mnr fans but i bleed orange and blue denver will rise again resident broncos fan for every blog resident broncos for stampede bule thanks shvd98z24

Is there a way to do a captcha with the SBN Nation sites? That might be a more effective way of blocking spammers than a 1 day registration plus it will allow people who might find an interesting thread through google to comment on the same day.

Yeah you have two options.
A captcha, or a question. The question will usually be “what is 3 plus four” or something with alternative ways (number + spelling it out) and then they type it in. Unless you wanted it to be a football question, which is fine too. I was just speaking to a captcha-esque thing.

I feel it is unfortunate that it is getting to the point that we are trying to limit speech to “Quality” members…. that screams elitist. And I do have to agree with jayjonna415 that people are going beyond the bad grammar thing and basically telling people that they are stupid or ignorant…. this is ridiculous. See above if you doubt me. It almost feels as if there is this cadre of commentators on this site that worries too much about quality control of their future resumes as sports writers then actually talking about the 49ers…. and by the way, damn is not a swear word.

We're not asking for perfect grammar..
…we’re not asking for anything other than to obey the site rules already in place. If someone’s grammar is bad enough to the point where they are disruptive, it is no longer ‘elitist’ to tell them to stop. I agree with you that some people need to keep their mouth shut and stop the petty mudslinging, they are out of line and should be warned, themselves.
I don’t care if the guy can’t spell, I don’t care if his grammar reflects on my ability to obtain a job at another site some day. I care about this being a pleasant place for all to post, and Jay is ruining that (at times!) with disruptive posting, I mean look at that—whenever (up there) someone tried to say something rational to him, he commented at them in about five different replies, does that make any sense? No, it’s a guy who fully doesn’t understand the rules.
Over at Field Gulls (the Seahawks blog) they actually edit peoples’ comments, warn people and flat out ban them for using improper grammar. We are not them and not like that. Under any circumstances. People are indeed going beyond the bad grammar thing, like you said, and those very same people need to check their insults at the door and learn to be amicable. So I agree with you, and at the same time I hope you understand where I, and the rest of the staff here, are coming from.

It was unfair for me to throw out a generalization about the writers on this site…
I think I probably saw jayjonna415’s second post on this site. Something where he used the word “Damn”. And he was jumped on immediately by an admin not just for punctuation but for “swearing”….. He was asked at the time to improve his posts and you could see the difference immediately. Maybe not to what we would like to see, but they did improve. And yet he continued to get ragged on. In a personal manner. I feel this fanned the flames instead of controlled them. Leadership is not just because I say so…

I understand what you mean, and the personal attacks absolutely have to stop, but this isn’t something that can be linked to any one incident, you know? This happens in more than half of the posts here. But I do, again, see what you mean—the best way to approach this is to try and be nice about it, but there’s times I wonder if Jay will realize that some of us are trying to help him. He needs to differentiate who is and who isn’t his enemy. Needless to say all I care about is no rules being broken. By Jay, or by someone insulting Jay—it needs to stop here and now, and I hope that’s not elitist of me.
