49ers President Jed York Conference Call Open Thread

Earlier today we mentioned that 49ers president Jed York would be answering questions from the media on a conference call today. It's safe to say the questions will be primarily about the Scot McCloughan situation. There has been no official word from the 49ers, so this is a chance to get some kind of clarity and/or closure on the situation.

The good news for 49ers fans is that they are going to stream the conference call over at 49ers.com. Head on over to listen in, and feel free to discuss it here. I'd imagine this should be a rather interesting conference call. Let's hope for some answers.

Roles and the draft

I’m perfectly fine with not focusing on a GM decision long-term until after the draft. Given how close it is, I don’t think you can take care of that so quickly.

by David Fucillo on Mar 22, 2010 5:14 PM PDT reply actions

I understand that

Because this could completely change the look of the team.

The problem is, how can you say you don’t know if you would have one, why not just state, we would like to hire another in the future. It opens up speculation that boy wonder wants to be GM.

by hudd07 on Mar 22, 2010 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

see schleko below.

I’m not asking for a GM, but it’s easy to say, I would like this team to function with a GM, and we will be looking to hire, after the draft, or in the near future.

Or I suppose it could be the other way around.

Jed makes a power grab for Mrs. McCloughan’s tush. Scott doesn’t want the story to get out because then it would be a bit embarrassing for him. Although really it’s not like it isn’t embarrassing for all parties.

Randy Hahn: "I’ve been referred to as a playa…"

by 49er16 on Mar 22, 2010 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions

wow..

For some reason I got annoyed with Jed during the call..

Jed is dodged all the deep questions.. the most important ones.. using the words.. Its a personal/personnel matter.. It frustrates me hearing him say that over and over.

He also kept saying his integrity is much more important to him..

I cracked up so much when they asked him a couple more questions and he answered by saying its a private matter and they started laughing.. hahaha

Jed said Mike Singletary won’t get a more significant role..

In the background you could here someone saying how Jed is giving them absolutely nothing referring to him not answering many of the deep questions..

Jed just said he promises HE will never be the GM and Paraag will never be the GM..

When asked if Alex Smith will still be the main man although Scot is gone Jed answered by saying Alex Smith is their guy and backing that up by saying Singletary has faith in him..

by StevenC on Mar 22, 2010 5:25 PM PDT reply actions

I dont think so, he gave Scot his word and he held true to his word. Jerry Jones probably would have kncoked him. I actuall give Jed kudos for keeping personal stuff seperated from personel stuff.

Too many freaks, not enough circuses.

by Drew Kerr on Mar 22, 2010 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions

He said he gave his word to not say anything to the press for 5 days.

He never said he gave his word to never give the fans any indication as to what the hell was going on.

It’s not the fact that he wouldn’t discuss Scot’s departure that bothered me, but that he seemed completely unprepared to field any questions involving the GM position itself, or what the organization was planning to do about the new vacancy.

Why bother with a conference call if you have nothing new to add? You could have just released a statement that said “It’s a private personnel matter” and had the same effect, minus the media frustration.

he also backed away from a lot of personnel issues .. so I don’t see what the point of the call was

by StevenC on Mar 22, 2010 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

We learned that Singletary won't be taking on an increased role

like many speculated. We learned that Jed won’t be the GM and that Marathe won’t.

We learned that they knew this was coming (or at least had a general idea). We learned that Alex Smith is the guy going forward despite the signing of Carr. We learned that the draft board is 95% complete.

We learned that this separation wasn’t due to McC’s job performance. I’d say we learned quite a bit

We all had a pretty good idea that Smith was the go to man still.

We all would’ve shunned Jed if he made himself the next Jerry Jones so he had better not make that move.

We already knew they had a draft board setup with who they mostly want..

and personally I felt that if he would’ve said McC’s separation was do to his performance I’d be furious just as a lot of other people would..

hey Drew

when it comes to trading up or trading down “now i may sound dumb” , does trading up mean going from lets say 17 to 18 and does trading down mean going from 17 to 16 or is it the opposite?? sorry for my incompetence

by StevenC on Mar 22, 2010 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I think we should trade up.. there is so much talent that will be going by the 10th round that would help our team a lot more significantly than the talent that will be left that it would be worth it.. well that’s just my opinion of course

by StevenC on Mar 22, 2010 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions

10th Round?

Are you being sarcastic or do you mean the 10th pick? If not there are only 7 rounds so waiting until the 10th round would mean we are getting a bunch of undrafted players.

by Joshuahss on Mar 22, 2010 6:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it's just the opposite

There is a LOT of talent out there for this draft after the 10th pick and later. Look at the 100 in 100 posts that Drew is putting together, you’ll see a good bit of it.

by Mangoman on Mar 22, 2010 6:06 PM PDT up reply actions

by StevenC on Mar 22, 2010 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

no.. that's a little too much

depending on the team maybe we could put one of our players into the mix.. maybe Clements.. or are you allowed to put money with it too… like a 1st round.. 3rd round and 1 or 2 million..

You know I was wondering how this thread got into a Jed York conference call posting

But now I realize everything happens for a good reason. In this case, just when we think things are bad, all we have to do is think about the Raiders and instantly there’s hope! j/k

But since you brought that up, 2002 had to have been Al Davis’ swan song, but the sad thing is after eight years he hasn’t figured it out yet. But if you got four draft picks and $8MM for your former head coach and ended up losing in the SB to him, wouldn’t you still be in denial??
