Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

What players in this draft can make San Fran a Super Bowl Contender?

Last year the 49ers played good enough to win 11 games but only won 8. There were three games last year where our inexperience as a team cost us the game. As I look back at last year and why certain winnable games went down the drain, a few things pop into my mind. Number one is of course the offensive line. The 49ers line was fairly consistent in run blocking but failed to show up on passing plays. The 49ers can find a replacement in this draft at the #13 spot for either RG, LG, or RT. The second biggest need is help with defending the pass. Too many times last year did we stop teams on 1st and 2nd down just to let the opposition throw for first downs. Now you can put the blame on the fact that Nate Clements and Walt Harris were out for most of the year but we can't be sure that either of them will return to Pro Bowl form after their injuries. Regardless of how they will do, our safeties were also an issue. Dashon Goldson is a stud and it was an instant and long awaited upgrade when they got Mark Roman out of there. Michael Lewis is a good run stopper but he can't cover. I also thought we could use another pass rusher for our linebacker rotation. So these are the players I think the 49ers will draft based on the best players available and our team needs.

 first 3 rounds

#13th pick Trent Williams

Most likely the best OL left in the draft at our pick. A good pass blocker and run blocker and would be a good fit for our team. Many other good players available but Trent Williams is a solid pick that fills a need.Would take Bulaga or Okung if either fell that far.

#17th pick Taylor Mays

Physical standout who was a stud at USC. Many say he is not a playmaker because of his interception totals decreasing after his first year. Mays can sit and share time with Michael Lewis and get experienced. Taylor Mays is too good for us to pass up and if it doesn't work out at safety he can still be a freak linebacker.

#49th Jahvid Best

Dynamic playmaker at Cal. I think he is the best running back coming out and was the best college RB last year before his concussion. He will be our kick returner as well as a secondary RB.

#71 Mardy Gilyard

Another good kick returner as well as a good slot receiver. If he falls to this pick i can't see the 49ers not taking him.

#79 A.J. Jefferson

A good solid corner that is athletic and can sit and develop as well as help on special teams.

Too many freaks, not enough circuses.

Well maybe a D- but you didn’t have that as an option. Really don’t like Williams … I could maybe, maybe, maaaayyyyybe live with Mays or Best…maybe. But depending on who is there when we draft, I’d be disappointed with those first three rounds. I guess I’d be forced to root for any of them, but I would feel conflicted in doing so until they proved themselves… if they even did.

Way too harsh

I know MUCH less about college football than you do, but with all respect Drew, how is this draft even close to an F?

It hits most of the 49ers needs with talented players. Say what you will about Williams, but Best, Mays and Gilyard seem like pretty solid picks to me. (I think Mays’s coverage issues can be coached and are overblown)

And it’s not like Williams is the DHB of linemen this year. I’ve read that he was actually a pretty solid RT, although you have repeatedly said he wasn’t.

by brundylop on Mar 23, 2010 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions

that being said

I’m not so exciting about the 49ers picking Williams either.

by brundylop on Mar 23, 2010 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I just didn't and do not like it... I at least bumped it up to a D cause I realized maybe I was being to critical

Needs or not, it just doesn’t work for me.. I mean, I’m not nostradamus but if I had Marty McFly’s time machine and could go back to the 2001 NFL Draft… I’d say these players probably pan out to be like:

Kenyatta Walker
Adam Archuleta
Anthony Thomas

Nothing to get excited about.

Archuleta was a pretty good safety

but he was plagued by injury

Maybe for a couple years

but now he is playing for the Las Vegas Locomotives… just sayin. He was an excellent college free safety at AZ State though.

His injuries basically shut down his NFL career

when he was healthy he was one of the better ones in the league

Maybe

I was just listing those specific players to illustrate a point. Mays can be good, but the other two I seriously question as noted in other threads

Ah come on

Gilyard in the 3rd is pretty good.

by SportsChicken on Mar 24, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Not perfect, but not awful.

I’m ok with Williams and Best. I feel strongly that the Oline was worse than most fans think last season. If Gore is stuffed behind the line 8 times, and breaks the next one for 75 yards, it fools you into thinking you can run the ball. Oline is 5 positions and I wont be happy unless we get an OT and OG inside of the first 4 picks. I can think of 2 more wins last season if we get 1 more first down.
option 1) Baluga(T), Iupati(G), Allen(S), Cox/Franks(cb), Worilds(olb), Ford/Holiday(kr)
option 2) Baluga, Spiller, Ducasse, Cox/Franks, Worilds(olb)
option 3) Baluga,Wilson(cb), Best(rbkr), Jerry(G), Worilds(olb)
I am ok with Williams…I don’t think that I know more than all the scouts that have him rated so high.
To answer the original question: we have a good shot at winning the division but not at contending for the super bowl this year.
Reasons why to get 2 top hogs:
1) Oline will be elite for years to come. 2) support our shell shocked QBs. 3) if our precarious qb situation happens to not work out, the QB of the future will get his chance with a great OL! 4) How great will Gore be? Coffee will even look good.

I like...

I would pick option 3 or option 1 if Bulaga is available. Best guess is he will be gone by #13. What then?

You may be right

a) Williams or best OT
b) Spiller, Iupati, Saffold

Out of the first three rounds the only pick I really like is Mays

And I don’t like him that much. Williams at 13 is a waste. Best doesn’t make any sense for us in the 2nd round, especially with our line. Gilyard will be an ok WR but I don’t think he’s a huge upgrade over the guys we have right now.

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Mar 23, 2010 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Agree in part

I agree about Best and Gilyard. I think we need the best available OT at #13. I think I would prefer Wilson from Fresno State over Mays in Round 1; we get a dynamite kick returner from day 1 and a future cover corner to ease into the lineup as a nickle or dime CB. What could we get by trading down a few slots where he should still be available, another 4th rounder? That could make sense.

Superbowl? Did someone say superbowl?
  1. Eric Berry- Mr Everything DB
  2. Roger Saffold – Good fit at RT
  3. Mardy Gilyard – Good slot WR option and kr/pr
  4. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah- appears to be solid CB in all facets, plus kr/pr
  5. Mike Johnson/Jon Jerry/Jon Asomoah – OG depth, potential starters
4th Rafael Priest CB Underrated, IMO, missed time and was not thrown at.
  6. Deji Karim – Sleeper COP back will make noise at NFL level.
5th Alex Daniels- Nickel DE pass rush issue addressed
6th Joe Pawalek ILB – has shown a glimpse of good pass defense skills and can tackle.
6th LeRoy Vann – One kr/pr guy with more td’s than Spiller in two seasons
7th Kade Weston NT – good size and had impressive numbers for a NT.

Well, we took care of the hole at safety, COP back, 3 STeamers, ILB with tackling ability, size and coverage ability, back up NT to groom for 4 seasons and a pass rusher out of 3rd and long. Not to mention two more weapons for Smith to throw to. This is before UDFA.

I like it

I think it’s good value for us. We land Berry, don’t overpay for a RT, get a solid corner and another WR option, land a guard who might compete for a spot.

Nice work.

What would you suggest for a WR?

I picked Gilyard due to his return ability, I like THomas more than any WR, but I am unaware of any return ability. Slide in Bey Bey THomas and swap Daniels for another PR DE (situational DE).

the obvious wr/kr

Gilyard barely weighs 180 lbs. He was exposed against
florida. Not so fast, not so elusive. The pick should be big game DAmian Williams. Hes an elite route runner and a big time punt returner. Check out the 2008 Rose Bowl and the 2009 Emerald Bowl. This guy is so underrated its silly. Unlike Thomas and Gilyard he wont need a year to learn how to run nfl routes. He is ready now!

Alex Daniels could fill many roles

depth at LB as well as FB (he had some good numbers at Cincy). Apparently Sing had a long conversation with him there and if you can kill two birds with one stone why not?

I would not be surprised to see us draft a FB at all. We’ve interviewed a few at the combine, Sing has met with others at their pro days and we brought in Caulcrick on a futures contract.

We have Brit Miller (who I think will be a stud with the caoching of Rathman) and also Norris (whether we like it or not, he’ll be with us). 3 FB’s is just too many.

I dont think Norris gone… he did his job and served his purpose. I really cant see us picking up a FB, or even bringing one in as an UDFA for that matter

Too many freaks, not enough circuses.

by Drew Kerr on Mar 24, 2010 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I thought Norris was a horrible FB

But we’ve had this discussion before.

If we weren’t interested in a new FB why did we bring Caulcrick in on a futures contract? He’s not going to be competing for a RB spot that’s for sure. Why even interview FB candidates at the combine if we’re not thinking about drafting one?

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Mar 24, 2010 1:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Who did we interview? And do you have a link?

Caulcrick is basically a camp body. He wasnt even a FB in college, he was just a regular RB. He was too slow, so he was converted.

I am also curious to know what did Norris do that was so bad? I dont think I ever saw him miss a block and he came up key in a few short yardage situations.

I know what a FB 's job is thank you very much

I’m not a complete idiot. read through my play-by-play reviews. I highlight plenty of times where Norris missed a block or dropped a pass.

there were not enough to warrant a comment that he is “horrible”. If he was that bad they would have released him already.

by Drew Kerr on Mar 24, 2010 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

He was released once already

he was the FB in 2006 and 2007. In 2008 we let him go and went and with Zak Keasey as the starter. Gore asked the team to bring back Norris and they did so as a favor to him.

I’ll be shocked if he’s still the starter come opening kickoff.

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Mar 24, 2010 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

We didnt even use the FB that much anyway. I would be shocked if he’s not on the team next season. And even if he is, I can’t see them spending a pick on a FB and bringing 3 FB’s in to the preseason. It’s very unlikely IMPO.

Alex Daniels, as a DE for us and a STeamer, not projecting him on offense.

McDonald did better from the DT in the Nickel, IMO, and we can also let MCDaniels get in the mix for OLB.

I dont like those players that can play 45 different positions. I’d rather just have a guy that can play one position extremely well. I am just turned off when I hear a guy can play 4 or 5 positions. To me, all that says is that they aren’t focusing on one. It works in baseball but not football IMO

At a fifth round pick? that's a bit overboard, because hae can play 4 or more positions.

It’s not his fault he has athleticism, is that a bad thing? Anyways that was college not the pros, as I said I am thinking just on defense and ST’s.

Don' worry what other people say,

you are right on target. You have selected players that can actually start and that is what we need, OL and DB. I agree a RB in the 2nd round and Best would be a good choice. You other selection are also good. As we know, some may be there or not but the positions are correct. Keep inputing cause I like what you say!!!!

If the niners would 2 pick up taylor mays he would be a instant bust ( a young mark roman )

this dude can’t tackle he doesn’t wrap-up he had 1 pick in 7yrs lthat longol nah i know it wasn’t but because he was at the top of that mock-draft i gave it a ‘’ D ’’, yea he brought it down by himself.

The only elite player available when we pick will be Brandon Graham. Hopefully !

He’s nearly unblockable, and will make our “secondary” way better. The guy turns the corner like a Ferrari and will be a nightmare for any LT to handle. I believe he alone will help our defense get off the field sooner, and give our offense much more time on the field..Suh will be very good, Mccoy will be very good , Berry will be Very good. Defensive rookie will be Graham, bank on it! Draft him at thirteen! Next I would (attempt) to trade down in, or out of the first round, but it probably wont happen # 17 would be Kyle Wilson , or Earl Thomas. Another player I believe " will " be an excellent pro and we should not pass up is Toby Gerhart. We should take him in the second round. If we have to trade up to do it, so be it . And dont tell me about his speed , as I looked back yesterday , I found he had a better forty at the combine than Frank Gore did in 2005. Unless the info was wrong that is. And I wouldn’t call Frank a slug carrying the ball . Either way he will be higher on most draft boards than we think. He will give us a power runner , and a COP back only in the other direction. Saffold is a really good pick in round two also. I would deal to get both. If we then take the best safety , and best guard available we would at least make the playoffs, and maybe further, than first round !
  1 Brandon Graham OLB
1b Kyle Wilson CB, or Earl Thomas- (safety and corner)
2 Roger Saffold OT, or Bruce Campbell OT (He might drop out of the first round)
2b Toby Gerhart (trade up, maybe third and 5th rounder

4 Jacoby Ford WR , or Myron Rolle (depends on 1b)
  6 Brandon Carter OG
  6b David Pender CB
  7 Brandon James

by mensa on Mar 24, 2010 11:29 AM PDT reply actions

My thoughts

I disagree on Graham, as I don’t think he will be as good as you say. But that is just my opinion. There is also no way Campbell drops that far in the second round, but I like Saffold and Kyle Wilson. As for Gerhart, I would much rather see a speed merchant than a power runner as our COP back.

by Joshuahss on Mar 24, 2010 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions

it's not a horrible draft

and I can see why you’d pick those guys. besides, none of us are GM’s or scouts so take it with a grain of salt.
