Niners must address their O-line issues in FA

The Niners need to sign offensive guard Chester Pitts (assuming he passes a physical). I've read that the Ravens would be willing to trade offensive tackle Jared Gaither for a 2nd round pick instead of a 1st rounder. If this is true, then the Niners need to get him. (Maybe even sign the psychotic former Eagle, offensive tackle Shawn Andrews, as well, to a 1-year deal and see if he can still play or if he will only consume his own feces.) If they get their O-line solidified (if they got Pitts and Gaither it would be more than solidified) they could go after a top flight corner with the 13th (Berry or Haden) or if Spiller or Dez Bryant (unlikely) was somehow available, then grab one of them. I really like Taylor Mays with the 17th, regardless of who they get at 13th, but his mechanics aren't great. It just seems so obvious that they could address their line issues in FA and grab a game changing skill player like Bryant or Spiller and still get a "need" player at 17th.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I absolutley agree about Pitts and Gaither. Not Andrews

There would be less of the unknown factor with these two steady experienced O-Linemen on the team, IF they are both deemed healthy.

You never know with rookies. Even if they have a bright future it can sometimes take a year or even two for them to perform at a high level. With this being the teams worst weakness why take a chance drafting rookies? And can we really afford the time it will take for them to learn?

Then 13 and 17 are open for the BPA.

Spiller is such a wild card. Look at what Percy Harvin did to change the dynamic on the Vikings — including kick returns. 49er fans won’t forget that. And I think he helped Farve just as much as Farve helped him. Spiller could be that kind of game changer. If he’s there at 13 and we don’t take him I’m going to cringe!

At 17, if we have Pitts and Gaither signed, then 17 will be our last pick until the 3rd round. But there are so many BPAs at 17, if we have the luxury of not HAVING to pick an O-Lineman there will be all sorts of big time talent there: at pass rush, CB, or maybe even safety or WR? Although I would tend to focus on defense if Spiller and the two O-linemen are in the fold.

Meanwhile, I do agree we have to get more aggressive in free agency and get some experienced talented bodies on the O-line right here right now. Health issues are a concern. But these two guys have a good long term track record of being healthy — corect me if I’m wrong.

The key is — if they are projected to be fully recovered from their injuries by pre-season then I think we ought to get very aggressive and grab them right now. It’s up to the team doctors not to blow it. But that would be my only concern. Giving up a 2nd rounder for a healthy Gaither sounds like a strong move in the right direction.

One other thing — a team is only as good as its weakest link, especially in the playoffs. Because that weak link is sure to be exposed against great teams with great coaches.

So if we had these two O-Linemen, Spiller as our KR PR and COP RB, and then drafted a free safety and CB that panned out for us, all of a sudden there are very few weak links that I can see.

Maybe Alex Smith himself would be the weak link if you think he’s terrible. But I think at worst he’s probably frustratingly mediocre. With a second year in the system and a much better O-lIne, maybe he is even better than mediocre. Although I have a hard time trusting his consistency. That’s what frustrates me about him. But we’re giving him a shot. so let’s get him some experienced protection and see what the heck he can do, with no more excuses.

Anyway, this post makes a lot of sense to me.

i totaly agree with this, the only thing is i think they should draft taylor mays and Brandon Graham and for special teams get Jordan Shipley or Damian Williams in the 3rd round

by hblilduff on Mar 31, 2010 2:14 AM PDT reply actions

agree about Pitts only

Pitts only costs money. Gaither costs a draft pick and would need to be overpaid. Andrews is a head case.

Jason Hill is turning the corner!

Stopped at Dez Bryant

Why do people think we need another 1st round receiver? It’s a waste of money and especially since he has the same agent as Crabtree. So we’ll see him playing around week 6. WR in the 1st round is a foolish idea, and would leave us with other holes. Morgan is fine for now and can compete with a guy we draft in the 3rd or 4th.

Pitts would be a good signing, but let’s not forget that Baas went to OTA’s to prove that he could do the job right. He also missed most of training camp because of injury last year. He might actually surprise people this year. Still would like to see a veteran signed and Pitts is the best available without overspending on a RFA.

As for tackle, Andrews would be an incredible waste. He has no passion for the game and doesn’t really care. He’s also been injured recently and hasn’t played. Bad option. Gaither might be good, but you have to worry about how that injury is going to heal. Will he be ready for training camp? Will his play be effected by that injury? Is he going to be able to stay healthy now? Too many questions if you ask me. I’d rather take that 2nd rounder and draft a guy who can potentially be a cornerstone on the right side for years to come without those question marks. Veldheer, Calloway and Saffold are all good options.

I'm think'n ..........

this would be a good idea …….as far as Gaither goes , give up the second rd and then trade back one of the first pick’s to get the second back , and bingo there u have it problem solved ….Ha!

Gaither

What does it mean that the Ravens are willing to trade him for a second-round pick?

They know him better than we do. They don’t think he’s worth the money he would keep. Isn’t that a bit of a red flag?

Yes, there’s always some risk involved in drafting a rookie you expect to start. But that strikes me as smarter than going for another team’s cast-offs.

I doubt that the Niners will sign Pitts and

there hasn’t been any reports of an offer and may not likely be one. I don’t understand the lack of interest in FA’s. Last year wasn’t an good year. Signing Marvel Smith was a serious mistake. I mention concerns about his back and it came true and the rest of the signing didn’t contribute much. This year is even worse. A couple of practice players and backups is all we signed. Even though McC is now gone I doubt the TB can do anything at this point. The Market is used to help support concerns to fill in areas of concern. Nothing has been done. Again !!!

There isn't much out there...

However, there are some RFA’s that would help quite a bit and there’s been no push to gauge a potential trade. Maybe they’re just waiting for draft day when teams are willing to part with players more easily.

The cap .......

or lack of cap , put a end too some 200 UFA, whom are now RFA…. so there really has’nt been a bonanza of play’ers to choose from ……..and i would like too see them take care of thier own first , which hasn’t happen’d either ……… So yes L V niner same old s!!!! …….

Agree that FA is the better source for Offensive Linemen - They're Pro-ready.

Pitts will give Baas the competition he needs and one of them will be the backup but I don’t think Gaither is the right fit for us. I don’t see where he ever played RT, even in college. Don’t want to pay LT money for an unproven to switch. Because “there isn’t much left out there” for FA RTs, I’m prefering to use a 1st rounder for RT.

by DeathValleyCarl on Mar 31, 2010 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

There are no RT's slated with 1st round status.

All college RT’s this year are slated at 2nd round or lower. The exception being Williams who moved to LT last year.

by 9thevolution on Mar 31, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Williams'll do

While Board is turning him into a pro, he can review RT.

Carl, apologize... LOL

“"there isn’t much left out there" for FA RTs,” I cracked up when I read this. I know Carl meant Free Agent Right Tackles, but FA RTs looked soooooooo much like FARTs…. sorry, I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming…

(oh that isn’t what you said now that I look at it closer). Yeah, I noticed the similarity before I posted but I let it slide (out).

I propose NN requires 20-20 vision going forward – any seconds?

Getting Pitts is a great idea.

He’s a proven OG who can play either side. He will also help in saving the Forty Niners a draft pick, which they probably would have used on Iupati, or some other NFL-unproven entity.

Baalke has also hinted that Joe Staley may switch from LT to RT depending on the draft. Therefore, I would not be surprised if the Forty Niners drafted Charles Brown from USC to play LT. I’ve only been hearing good things about this guy. The last time he gave up a sack was in week four of his junior year (he was a senior this past season). He also remembers the name of the guy who got that sack. This only conveys his passion for the game and his responsibility of protecting the QB, which I love.

Bandwagoners are the prostitutes of fandom.

by SSC24 on Mar 31, 2010 11:13 PM PDT reply actions

He's undersized...

same as Staley. Personally, I wouldn’t want two converted tight ends starting as the bookends on my OL. I’d much prefer a big, nasty right tackle in the 2nd round. Calloway and Veldheer should be available at #49.

by 9thevolution on Apr 1, 2010 6:49 AM PDT up reply actions

has anybody seen any video of Veldheer?

He had an incredible combine (probably one of the top 2-3 2010 combine performances by any of the o-linemen), and I found some video of him “cleaning” something like 450 lbs in a workout, but CAN HE PLAY FOOTBALL? I find his size/skill set combo to border on amazing, but can he play? He intrigues the hell out of me. Besides, the 49ers had a pretty fair country guard, Howard Mudd, went to 2 or 3 pro bowls for us back in the 60s, who was also from Hillsdale…

I’m against the drafting of Taylor Mays for just that reason, that he has amazing physical tools, but doesn’t have good football instincts. I need to find out if the same is true about Veldheer before I officially develop a “man crush” on him..

did my due diligence, fyi

Veedheer’s combine results: 6’8", 312# BUT somewhat “short-armed” @ 33" (longest arms: 36 1/4", Bruce Campbell) (only 8 o-linemen at the combine had shorter arms)

5.09 40, 4th best among all 45 o-linemen at the 2010 combine
32 bench presses @ 225#, 10th best
33" vertical jump, tied for 3rd
9’1" broad jump, 5th
4.51 20 yard shuttle, tied for 1st
7.4 3-cone, tied for 1st

He was one of only 3 o-line candidates at the combine that participated in all drills

BUT, CAN HE PLAY????

After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
