Searching for something when it's right in front of you?
All of us know that our main priority coming into the draft is O-line, but what if the lineman we have been searching for is right under our noses. Let's go for a jump shall we.. woohooo!
Now I digress from the jump.
Last night I was listening to Kevin Lynch "49ers insider from SFGate.com" on Fitz & Brooks and while he spoke of many great things happening during the OTAs he also spoke of Alex Boone. Lynch said that Boone weighed 340 lbs and went down to 300 than gained 25 lbs of muscle and is currently 325 and looks a lot more fit than last year. It seems like he has a chance at getting a starting position on the line sometime during the year if he keeps the dedication he is going with.
So this is my question... Does Alex Boone have a chance at starting sometime this year?

sorry if it sounds weird..
but i’m not saying Boone did all that during the past 2 days.. it’s during the course of last season up to date today.
It's conceivable, but he's clearly a developmental type.
He’s got the size to be a pro tackle, but it’s not clear that he has the feet for it. Of course you often get quicker when you lose some baby fat, so I’m definitely feeling better about him after hearing this news.
One more note: Kentwan Balmer dropped from 25% body fat to 19% last offseason too and it didn’t do too much to transform his game last season.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
Doubt this season....
I think he makes the team this year, but I don’t see him being a starter. His feet are questionable still, but we’ll have to see what Solari can do with him. It may be a good thing that they did an early OTA with everyone. Perhaps Solari saw something and can convince them not to reach for a 1st round tackle.
Either way, I think he ends up becoming a depth player. That’s not a bad thing though considering he’s only a UDFA. That’s big time value if he’s capable.
I would like to see him
work on his footwork and get it to the point where he can take over Sim’s role as a swing tackle after Sim’s leaves. If he can improve enough, he could be a valuable backup, and would be very cheap to keep

Agreed...
I would like for him to become a swing tackle as well, but would be fine if he was strictly an option for RT and possibly step in at guard in a serious emergency. He was a LT in college though, so it wouldn’t be completely new for him. Doing at the pro level is quite a bit different though.

I think he's unlikely every to be a left tackle in the pros.
Guard or RT seems more likely.
But let’s take it one step at a time – let’s see if he can make the actual team this year.
He won't start
he can definitely still develop into a good OL in couple of years but I doubt he’s ready this year
I believe that everyone has a chance to start.
That’s up to him. I think he will make the team this year and may even start. That is based on injuries or bad performance. So, Never say Never. Stranger things have happen. And based on last year performances from the OL, I think he has a chance !

I feel the same way
He still has to beat out Chris Patrick for the back up OT job.
And even then he won’t get playing time because Bary Sims is the primary backup.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Isn't Patrick undersized?
Personally, I’d rather just stick Boone on the roster if you believe he has more upside. Though Patrick could be the guy they hope to replace Sims after this year as the floating tackle.
I wonder if they’ll give Boone a look at guard to see if he can play there as a backup who could move to tackle in an emergency. Much like what Snyder is, but hopefully better than Snyder.
Patrick is a little small.
But he’s the backup behind Sims right now.
I’m sure that Boone should be able to unseat him, but nothing is guaranteed.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Patrick vs. Boone
Patrick is only 280… I don’t even think that’s adequate enough to be a guard in the 80’s.
He still held a roster spot last season.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

We were running on a skeleton crew and he was there by default and no other options. It’s not like he “held” a roster spot.
Boone was certainly an option
They chose Patrick over Boone last season.
Hopefully this season it’s the other way around.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Boone
As much as I like the guy, I just don’t think he’s ready yet. I think he will definitely make the 53 this year though and be a back up.
I'm very comfortable with him being a backup

It was refreshing to read that Alex Boone...
…has shown the commitment necessary to become an NFL player. Hopefully, our new o-line coaches can coach up the skills he lacks. His poor footwork has been mentioned several times. When I coached (was a line coach), I had my players skip rope, as boxers do, to improve their footwork. These pro linemen are SO huge, however, I don’t know if that’s realistic, as that would put immense stress on their knees. Perhaps they could skip rope on a wrestling mat, or on a trampoline, to reduce that stress to an acceptable level. Anybody have a better suggestion? The more problems we can solve with people already on the roster, the better off we are. Can Boone improve that much in such a short period of time? I dunno. I hope so. It’d be great if it happened (but I’m not going to hold my breath).
It’s my understanding that one of the primary reasons for the OTAs to be this early (if not the only reason) was so the new o-line coaches could evaluate the talent already on the roster, to help guide the club as to exactly what o-line help we need to target in the draft.
BTW, during the recently completed OTAs, Boone was running at #2 RT (fyi, chikmagnet, Patrick was running at #2 RG)
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
That much of a body transformation has to make him more athletic. I don’t see how being the practice squad precludes him from making the leap to starter this season. If I remember correctly there was starting tackle on the Falcons who was former 49ers practice squad player.
Boone has had a full offseason to transform his body, knows the playbook, even has some experience under his belt. I’m not saying he will start but I think there is a chance. Right now he only has to beat out Snyder. The comparison was made to Balmer but Balmer has to unseat a legitimate NFL starter.
Okay, he lost weight, BUT CAN HE PLAY.
Hey man, I would be thrilled if this Boone guy became a starter, and a good one. But how many times do we here about players dropping weight, gaining muscle, etc. in the off season? Last year, LenDale White dropped 30 lbs before the season began…uh, and what did he do (222 rushing yards, 2 TDs)? Weight loss/muscle gain is nice, but what I care about is if Boone can maul the shit out of people, create wide lanes for Gore and keep Alex Smith upright consistently-that’s all I care about. What separates pro-bowlers from just huge-ass bodies are mechanics, technique, work ethic, leadership and chemistry. If he can do all those things that I mentioned consistently and effectively, I don’t care if he is a cheeseburger away from a heart attack.

Love the cheeseburger comment...
Boone is a little unpolished and needs some work on technique, and that’s the big question for him.
Not really good to make the comparison to White though since the guy sits behind CJ2K. It’s tough to get quality carries if you’re his backup.
We need a LG
I think Boone needs a good look at both RT and LG (where less fancy footwork is needed, even to pull) before we decide whether or not he will be in the Pro Bowl or the Arena League next year.
LG isn't as big a need
as RT is. I’d rather give Boone the shot at RT and see what he can do. Maybe they draft a guy who can eventually move to LT this year and ship Staley after a few seasons. LG can be addressed later in the draft this year.
