Free Agency moves (Updated: 3/16/2010)

Free agency is upon us. Trades and cuts are happening fast and furious and there ought to be more than a few midnight signings this year. There's a couple of things I want to cover really quick to make sure people know the basics about compensation when it comes to tags and the dates of free agency.

Here is what players can expect to receive in return for signing their RFA tender

Player with FOUR Accrued Seasons
Tender amount Compensation required
$3,168,000* First- and third-round draft picks
$2,521,000* First-round draft pick
$1,759,000* Second-round draft pick
$1,176,000* Determined by RFA's original draft status

*or 110% of player’s 2009 Paragraph 5 Salary, whichever is greater

Player with THREE Accrued Seasons
Tender amount Compensation required
$3,043,000* First- and third-round draft picks
$2,396,000* First-round draft pick
$1,684,000* Second-round draft pick
$1,101,000* Determined by RFA's original draft status

Teams have until midnight tonight to announce RFA tenders. Teams then have until April 15th to acquire a restricted free agent. If a team makes a move for an RFA then the original team has until April 21 to match the offer.

What I'm going to do with this post is actually list the RFAs for each team and what tender they've received, as well as any UFAs and cut players that might be of interest.

Can’t believe the Redskins just cleaned house like that. I wonder if they’ll cut more than that even

Got to clear out dead weight to spend on the big names

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

What is the deal with Kirk Morrison?

What would we have to give up? I wouldn’t mind getting him one bit.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

3rd round tender for Morrison

I haven’t seen enough of his play to know if he’s worth it or not

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Mar 5, 2010 12:28 AM PST up reply actions

He's good

Probably the 3rd best player on that D behind Seymour and Asomugha. I would quickly give up a 3rd for him… not one hesitation on that. Doesn’t sound like he wants to leave though.

Check out his statline on tackles:

The guy gets to the ball in a hurry. It’d be like having Willis and Mini-Willis as our ILB’s.

Doesn't miss a game either

I'll have to pull out the Game Rewind and watch some Raiders games

I was thinking today how cool it would be if college football had something like the NFL Game Rewind. You could have each conference set it up and split the revenue through their schools. I’d pay to be able to watch every game from the MWC or WAC and at the end of the season I’d be paying to watch games on players I’m looking at for draft stuff.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Mar 5, 2010 1:06 AM PST up reply actions

He plays hard but is limited physically. I believe he is the guy Frank Gore floored in the training camp scrimmage last fall.

great coverage LB

but I think the FO will roll with TKO

I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice.

Man,

The time it must have taken putting this post together… with all the links and such (rec’d).

So many good/impact players up there that it’s kind of fruitless to just throw out names, but that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Anthony Hargrove I heard got a 3d rd tender and may be worth the cost; Gathier from Baltimore I think could be worth the 1st rd tender they put on him (if we see our selves going OL w/ one of our first two picks); and A. Randle El could be a nice slot-receiver pick-up and would compliment VD and Crabs nicely.

There are more guys than those three I’d like to see in a Niners uniform, but those three in particular would be equitable choices and cure some of our deficiencies we would otherwise try to figure out through the draft.

We really never seen Carr with an OK Oline… if he signs and beats out Smith that would be great. An experienced QB, who is athletic, can throw with velocity and from what I remember was accurate when he did have time. I say sign him!!

I love how they say in the article:

The 6-foot-7 Peppers brings uncanny athletic ability but questionable consistency, along with the 81 sacks he collected in eight seasons with Carolina — 10½ last year.

In other words, the Bears are paying not for the sacks he’s going to get, but for the sacks he got in the past for the Panthers.

My take?

This is a replay of last season’s offseason for the Bears: lots of assets (money/draft picks) out the door, and very little improvement on the field. When he first came into the league, I loved Peppers—a basketball guy, a North Carolina guy (Go ‘Heels!), an absolute beast, a ridiculous athlete—but the more I look at the way the last couple of seasons have gone the more I think he’s just a guy who’s in it for himself.

I don't agree with the original round tender

Anyone who signs either Brooks or Baas will have to give up a 2nd round pick, but because Baas was drafted in the 2nd round and Brooks in the 3rd, the 49ers only have to pay 1.226 million to Baas while paying 1.759 million to Brooks. In addition, that means teams only have to make an original round tender on a first round pick to get 1st round compensation. Veteran players should be paid for what they’ve done on the field, not for where they were originally drafted.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

People (Drew) forgets that he had 10 INTs in 2007 which was the last time the Chargers had a pass rush. People also forget how hard it is to cover a receiver when the QB has all day to throw. McDaniels/QB

What I found incredibly ridiculous was how much love McDaniels was giving his 3rd string QB Tom Brandstater (drafted late last year).

When asked about the QB situation at the combine, McDaniels was saying that they believed Tom was getting better and was going in to work every day to get better.

Does he seriously think that every single QB he drafts in the later rounds is going to be the next Tom Brady?

Ravens get Boldin

Boldin + 5 to Ravens for 3 and 4

Why couldn’t the 49ers throw that crappy package together?

by Owner on Mar 5, 2010 3:19 PM PST reply actions

Because the Cardinals wouldn't accept that kind of deal from the Niners

Any team demands a much higher price if they’re trading within conference and know they have to play against that player 2 a year for the next however many years. I’m sure if the Niner’s inquired about Boldin the price was at least one of the first rounders this year.

Plus, from a team building standpoint, making that trade essential stunts any growth for Josh Morgan. Plus it’s not like Boldin is a speed guy. The team essentially has 3 possession/YAC receivers and no deep threat. You throw in the cost of the contract along with the other draft pick cost and impact on our WR core and I don’t know if it would be worth it.

by HaloFanInDC on Mar 5, 2010 3:41 PM PST up reply actions

Well...

Sure, yes fine, that all makes complete and total sense. …but the fact is that the Cards wouldn’t have asked for a first rounder either way if the 49ers had went after him. If that was the case, the 49ers probably would have went after Brandon Marshall or Miles Austin/Vincent Jackson if they were going to give up a first round pick. The fact is that, even a 2nd round pick would have been worth Boldin (in the sense of his actual value).

I agree with the fact that we’ve got 3 possession receivers but I disagree with the grown stunting of Morgan. The kid has a nice upside, but its not going to be anything higher than a 2. If they can get in a WR who can help him on his path, why not do it? Why not bring in a guy like Boldin who can help Morgan (since they’re both YAC guys [even though YAC isn’t officially counted by the NFL, go figure]).

Rebuilding? Eh, I think we’re starting to think about winning. A couple years ago, sure, but rebuilding? No.

by Owner on Mar 5, 2010 3:58 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree

The cardinals ask for a first rounder for exactly the reason you mentioned. Essentially they are saying that they don’t want Boldin to go to a division rival and thus make all the other options more rational unless the team was dead set on getting Boldin. My whole point was that the reason why the Niners couldn’t throw a package like that together is that the Niners never really had a realistic chance at obtaining Boldin in the first place.

I agree with you that we need to think about winning now and I don’t see mentioning of rebuilding anywhere in my previous post. I just think that the drop off from Boldin to Morgan (plus forcing Morgan to either play the slot where he’s not as effective or having Morgan sit on the bench all together) isn’t worth tying up that much money or draft picks into a player who has been injury prone the past couple seasons.

The other thing is, do you really see Boldin as being anything more than a 2 receiver in this league? I’m not saying he’s going to be another Peerless Price when he goes to Baltimore, but the numbers he has put up have been clearly due in part of the system he’s been in and the fact that he’s been playing across from one of the top 5 receivers in the league.

by HaloFanInDC on Mar 5, 2010 4:16 PM PST up reply actions

My fault

I thought you had said re-building when you had said building.

As for Boldin, I really do see him being a #1 in the correct offense. He’s got all the tools to be a #1 but could easily end up being another TJ Houshmandzadeh. That being said, I think he needs another WR on the other side of him for him to be anything decent. His numbers won’t be anywhere near as good as they were with Fitzgerald and Warner, but they shouldn’t be anything less than a #1. There was a point in time (a very small one) that you could have argued Boldin > Fitzgerald.

Makes total sense. They got something back, and traded a problem child far, far away.
Boldin wouldn’t have made much sense for the Niners either—given that he would duplicate what the Niners already have.

Rams are finalizing a deal with Giants DT Fred Robbhins

Robbins has a bit of an injury history but when he’s healthy he’s very, very good, averaging 45-40 tackles per season and 5-6 sacks.

So, that leaves the draft wide open. The Lions have two new defensive linemen they’ve already added via FA and the Rams have added a great one to go opposite Chris Long.

Does this mean that Suh and McCoy slide to picks 3 and 4?

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.

the chargers also have holes at NT and rush OLB, the two most important positions in a 3-4, and may see their defense as more in need of help than their offense. They may think they’ll more likely find a good RB deep in the draft than good pass rushers/d-linemen.

I’d like to get both…or either or… but I just get this feeling that we’re going to be unhappy on draft day based on the moves FO has been maing in free agency. Seems like they are set on mediocrity. I was almost sure we would have done something on our secondary in free agency… well, so much for that. I’m not going to set my hopes high for the draft just to be let down. If they surpise me, I’d rather it happen that way. There’s other things I’d like to happen such as getting Gaither but I am not hopeful on that either based on McCloughan’s words of wisdom in that we wont be doing much in free agency. Seems to me like they are going to count on Sing to coach up average players and be content with that.

“He has to work to keep his pad level down and will struggle to leverage his blocks and get much push at the line of scrimmage. He is a smart blocker who is aware in pass protection and picks up games like stunts and twists and takes good angles to get to the second level.”

that the starting guard on the SB champs would be rated that low, but I was curious as they rarely ran the ball. And there is no way they will ever go after an undersized lineman with Singletary at the helm.

I don’t think the ESPN rumor quotes them but it also says that it is only a rumor and there may be no truth to it at all. Maiocco says he hasn’t heard anything from the team, but now Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News says that Washington has talked to a member of the 49ers’ coaching staff. This is from the ESPN Rumors page.

I just love how we are bringing in all these mediocre players. Washington may not be the same again and he’s getting up there in age for a RB. He’ll be 30 in two years. Fargas who could never solidify a starting spot with the Raiders even, tread on those tires is thin. David Carr who has never showed that he is starter worthy…I dont mind the pick but not thrilled either. And now Becht who has this as a stat line for the last 3 years (‘07- 5 catches, ’08 – 6 catches, andd ’09 – 7 catches)? Didn’t we just bring in Tony Curtis?

Just Got Caught Up On The NFL News

18 hour days at school and work, without access to the net, man that sucks; not too happy about that!!!

So it appears the 49ers are now “extremely active in free agency.

Anthony Becht
visited the 49ers today ”http://blog.49ers.com/2010/03/09/free-agent-te-becht-visits-49ers/" >link . I am interested to hear why the 49ers are in negotiations with a 3rd TE shortly after signing Tony Curtis!!! The same goes for the 49ers interest in blocking TE Chris Baker link

The 49ers are also interested in restricted free agent RB Leon Washington, who received a 2nd round tender from the New York Jets. Now this kinda makes sense to me, if i am correct, Washington is a darn good return man who has a great per carry average throughout his career. It makes sense to get a proven RB, rather than go after the Best’s/Mccluster’s of the world in the 2nd round, at least it is an option. The 49ers could also work out a deal with the Jets that would give them a pick later than the 2nd round.

Raves are rumored to be interested in a trade for Gaither

High round draft choice (no specifics given). Wonder if they’d give up a conditional 2nd for him?

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Mar 14, 2010 1:44 AM PST reply actions

Conditional second?

They have a 1st round tender on him so I think the best that could be done would be a solid second or maybe a swap of first with some other sundry picks swapped around here and there. I was actually just looking at the blackbirds as far as picks. They have amongst the most picks really, after Cincy they have the most I think (at 11) . There are essentially 3 maybe 4 teams I saw pick wise that I wanted to trade with Cincy, Balty, Miami and Buffalo. So how about a swap of 1’s and 2’s for with Balty?
The diff in the 1s is 230 and the diff of 2’s is 100 (total of 330 is equal to our #2 pick). They can’t do any trading of their 3rd or 4th rounders since they are compensatory picks so that landlocks them from moving around.

What I’d love to be able to do is this:
For Gaither swap our first and second rounders with them and try and get one (or both) of their 5th rounders. Maybe throw in a conditional 3rd or preferably 4th for next year too if we need to sweeten the pot. Sound like too much wheeling and dealing?

How silly am I being here?

Balanced draft with offensive emphasis. Pick 13 CJ Spiller 17 to Chargers 28 DI/DET Jared Odrick 48 WR Demaryius Thomas 60 S Reshad Jones

Conditional 2nd

IOW, a 2nd round pick that could move into a 1st round if the player does well.

I think Baltimore will want lots more than just a swap in picks. If we give them that 2nd and swap 1st round picks that might do it.

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

Hmm well let's think about this then

We’d lose the second, and we’d get their first (pick 25) but we’d not get their 57…hmmm wonder if they would be interested in a QB LOL. We could lose that 49 to get Bushrod and he’s 25. Either way without going Safety in the first we’re probably out of the running for a safety that has value. That’s what’s worrying me now. Without going for Mays or Thomas or Berry in the first then we’re looking at maybe if we’re lucky getting Reshad or having Major Wright as our top choice as far as safety. This is a conundrum but I know it can be worked out. :-) And I want their 2 5’s too. :-)

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Mar 14, 2010 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Ok so let me get this straight in my mind at least

Options:
A. Give up a first outright (Hopefully our 17)
B. Conditional second (That means we lose a round 2 pick next year)
C. Swap first and give up second.

My idea (which you say probably won’t float):
Swap firsts (17) and seconds and a conditional 3 next year along with our two 7th rounders for Gaither and their 2 5ht rounders.

I mean if it’s conditional it’s not this year’s second because nothing to judge right now.
What pieces am I missing where am I being stupid?

I would love it if we end up in FA with Carr, Pitts, Gaither and Otagwe. Keeping Sims on a two year contract and of course the franchise of Franklin.

Questions are what draft picks or players do we have to give up to do that? Don’t have a lot of trading pieces really.

I wouldn't do it at all. Do we know the extent of his injuries?

Neck and spine injuries are a red flag. Plus he will want more money than we will offer, I can guarantee that the Ravens just want to retain him at a low price. if he wants big money for a LT, than he doesn’t fit what we need, our FO is sound in Staley being our LT, even the hint at moving Staley prompted that point to be reconfirmed. our need is RT, I would pass on Gaither altogether.

I can't see how, he was not worth trading for, or the money he would have wanted, he has Raider written all over him when his contract is up.

Trouble in Denver? Most of their high profile RFAs are not participating in the off season workouts

Marshall, Dumervil, Scheffler and Chris Kuper (OL) are not participating in off season workouts

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Mar 16, 2010 4:53 PM PDT reply actions

i remember this

happening when high profile players want to get a deal done (extension) before the season. They see working out with the team as a risk to injury and a personal option..sometimes they even push this further…it could be trouble maybe in the sense so many players are taking this route.

I really like dumervil, in recent years he has more sacks than anybody else and has a non stop motor. I’m dreaming, but i wouldn’t mind the niners working out a sign and trade for this guy.

by 11allstar on Mar 16, 2010 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Dumervil is a stud

no way we get him for less than a 1st and a 3rd.

Atogwe is also planning on skipping off season workouts and probably OTAs as well for the Rams.

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Mar 16, 2010 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Now is that (1st and 3rd)

what dumervil is tendered for?

I think he wants his $$$ for putting up monster numbers—if denver doesn’t want to pay (they are in the driver’s seat having him this year for sure) they may want something for him (pick) and to free up more cash.

Can you imagine J. Smith/ Ray McDonald/ Brooks and Dumervil rushing on 3rd and long—opposing qb’s would be crushed!
If Denver was willing to accept Lawson + our #13 + cash considerations for Dumervil sign and trade with a four year extension—that would seriously rock—i don’t think they will but stranger things have happened.

We only had three

Baas, Brooks and Hudson. We gave offers to Baas and Brooks and Hudson just signed elsewhere.

I can’t imagine either Baas or Brooks not showing up to off season workouts, especially since Brooks is trying to work into a starting position and Baas may lose his starting position if we pick up a guard.

They can't step foot in the 49ers practice facilities

They’re not under contract and the team can’t risk an injury to a player that hasn’t signed his tender.

Besides, all they’re doing are conditioning exercises with the strength coach.
They can work out at home or in some other facility.

I expect Baas to sign his tender before OTAs.

sign and trade for what?

Are you speaking about Sims? Sorry just trying to follow you. I believe Sims is UFA so no trade value. Or are you speaking of the 9ers signing someone like Gaither or Bushrod with a trade?

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Mar 16, 2010 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

im hoping.... similiar

to what seattle and philly just did, that a team wanting to get something in return for a player that in 2011 will be gone(UFA), will instead try to work out a sign/extension and trade.
And yes I’m interested in a Gaither or Bushrod. A young proven Oline tackle with some NFL success and upside.

Its my personal opinion, but i do not feel the niners will immedietely improve their Oline with draft picks alone next year.

When drafted, Rachal had his fair amount of hype but so far has been just o.k. Boy he had some turnstiles and whiffs last year in pass defense that made Alex play dodge the rushing bull.

I’d feel comfortable going into the draft, with, at the very least with that veteran guard having been signed from houston, taking pressure away from us having to draft someone right away and allowing us to upgrade over Baas.

by 11allstar on Mar 16, 2010 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Rachal didn't get much playing time until the MNF game against in AZ in 2008

and he improved mightily by the time end of the 2009 season. he’s good at guard for us. And yes we are making moves. We’ve invited veteran guard Chester Pitts for a visit and presumably will give him some sort of offer then. Pitts is a popular man, meeting with several teams.

I’m sure we’ve given an offer to Sims, but he can probably get a starting job in Washington or another team like that, so why wouldn’t he go see what they can give him? He’ll be a backup here and paid like one.

Giather and Bushrod are both RFAs and I’d love either of ’em but we have plenty of time to work out any deals with their teams.

I actually like the approach the FO is taking this offseason. The FA market is limited right now, so rather than overpay for talent that won’t help us out all that much they’re taking their time looking for depth. I think it’s a goo dmove on their part.

How many RTs are available right now?

There aren’t many that are of starting quality that are UFA.

I really hope our FO has made a good offer to Sims, but I’m not surprised he’s looking around. If he went to a team like Washington he could probably start. If he stayed with us he’d be a backup.
