Official NN Mock Draft Thread 3.0 (03/08/10) [NEW]
Note: Don't forget to sign up for our next Community Mock Draft scheduled for this coming Saturday (March 13th). If you will be available this Saturday and have some free time, we'd love to have your participation.
Well folks, this is my 3rd Mock Draft. Originally I had only planned on doing a total of 3 but it looks as though it is going to end up being 4. I will do one more just before the draft. We will more than likely do one more community mock just before the draft as well. I was wanting to get through a bit more free agency before I put this one out, but a few of you have been asking to see my new mock.
In this thread, I would like to see more mocks if you all are up for it. We have somewhat got away from posting our mocks, so let's see 'em whether they be a top 10 mock, a Niners specific mock, or a full 32 team mock. Whatever the case, I'd like to see a blizzard of mocks in this thread. With that said, enough talk...let's mock:
1. St. Louis Rams -- Ndamukong Suh -- Nebraska -- Defensive Tackle
I have seen about 90% of the mock drafts change in this area and I am still trying to figure out what warranted that. While most folks have switched gears in their mocks and have them taking a QBOTF in Sam Bradford, I am going to hold steady with the Suh pick. Nothing has warranted a change other than a couple media guys saying they "should" take a Quarterback beacuse they've passed on Stafford, Sanchez, and Ryan. I feel the Rams will go with a veteran QB this year, draft a Qb in the 2nd, and then get their QBOTF in the '11 Draft if veteran QB and 2nd Round QB don't pan out. Suh is a once in a decade type of player that the Rams just won't be able to pass up. They've made a couple moves for depth at the position which doesn't negate the fact that Suh will be an upgrade over any of them.
2. Detroit Lions -- Gerald McCoy -- Oklahoma -- Defensive Tackle
This is a similar situation to the Rams in that they have added a piece or two on the defensive line but I don't think that it will warrant them to pass on a player like McCoy. At the Combine the Lions interviewed McCoy and have really targeted the Defensive Tackle expressing that they like him a lot. With the addition of defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and defensive tackle Corey Williams, and McCoy the Lions will enter the '10 Season with a completely different and vastly improved defensive line.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Russell Okung -- Offensive Tackle
With Donald Penn having experience at the Right Tackle, and the Bucs investing a 1st Round pick on Josh Freeman last year, they will want to give him as much time as possible. If both defensive Tackles are off the board here, I also look for the possibility of Tampa Bay trading back more toward the middle of the 1st so they can take Brian Price or Dan Williams without over spending. Possibly the Niners? It's certainly is an option.
4. Washington Redskins -- Sam Bradford -- Oklahoma -- Quarterback
Shanahan is running the show in Washington now and he'll want a fresh start at the Quarterback position. Campbell will be the stop gap for a year since he is servicable, but look for Bradford to take over if things go haywire midseason. Washington released 10 players so far and will more than likely make a splash in the secondary market of free agency. Bradford will be Shanahan's guy and will be successful if he can stay healthy.
5. Kansas City Chiefs -- Dez Bryant -- Oklahoma State -- Wide Receiver
Todd Haley is looking for some play makers to make a difference in that stagnate offense. Matt Cassell does not really have a number one receiver to throw to. Bowe was streaky last year and missed time here and there. The signing of Chambers proved to be fruitful and they plan on keeping him in K.C. With the possibility of Thomas Jones, Justin Fargas, or even Ladanian Tomlinson giving the Chiefs some help in the running game, Weis will have enough to work with in developing Cassell with Bryant, Chambers, and Bowe as his primary targets.
6. Seattle Seahawks -- Jimmy Clausen -- Notre Dame -- Quarterback
Pete Carroll will be digging in for the longhaul and will want to draft a QBOTF to help him ressurect his NFL Coaching career. Hasselbeck may get the nod initially but if he goes down again or doesn't do well, Clausen will be ready to step in and be an instant threat. It will be interesting to see what the Hawks do in their persuit of Brandon Marshall. If they are able to get Marshall, this pick may be Denver's and they could potentially go the same route since the future of Kyle Orton is uncertain.
7. Cleveland Browns -- Eric Berry -- Tennessee -- Safety
The Browns and Mike Holmgren have already been making alot of moves in free agency and the offseason to put themselves in a good place to make a significant difference from last year to the upcoming season. They have signed Scott Fujita from the '09-'10 Superbowl Saints Team, Tony Pashos from the Niners to start for them at the Right Tackle position and have several draft picks stockpiled this year. The Browns secondary ranked 28th in the NFL last year. Part of that can be attributed to the lack of pass rush and part of it to the lack of anyone worthy in the secondary. Berry is BPA for the Browns here and will be great value as well as a big area of need with this selection. Look for the Browns to continue to stay active in free agency.
8. Oakland Raiders -- Bryan Bulaga -- Iowa -- Offensive Tackle
The Raiders don't always make horrible first round decisions and I think this year they snap back in to reality and make a rational pick with Bulaga. He has been considered by most experts to be the 2nd best Tackle on the board. Davis will listen to the experts because he wants his golden boy Jamarcus Russell to succeed. Davis gets Russell some help with Bulaga and Cable may accidentally punch someone in flurries of joy with this pick here.
9. Buffalo Bills -- Rolando McClain -- Alabama -- Linebacker
The Bills need a Quarterback but have never been known to be aggressive in the draft. They will not be aggressive enough to move up for Clausen or Bradford and there is not another Quarterback worthy enough for this pick here. McClain will be their defensive Quarterback and the BPA to the Bills here.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars -- Earl Thomas -- Texas -- Safety
Jack Del Rio is trying to build that defense to be a strong one. They went out and signed Kampman recently to add pass rush which they have been lacking. The other major area of concern has been the secondary. Now that they have added pass rush with Kampman, they can focus in on their secondary. Thomas will be an instant insert to the starting line up and an instant upgrade from what they currently have.
11. Denver Broncos -- Anthony Davis -- Rutgers -- Offensive Tackle
Even though the Broncos may need a replacement for Marshall, they equally need a Right Tackle. Davis will be a day one starter and the Broncos can address the wide receiver position in the second round and may add another one later on... possibly even free agency.
12. Miami Dolphins -- Dan Williams -- Tennessee -- Defensive Tackle
Parcell's went out and spent some money on getting Carlos Dansby from the Cardinals, but both Joey Porter and Jason Taylor, the Fins two biggest pass rushers, may be on their way out. One would think that a pass rusher would be the best fit for this pick here, but good pass rushers will still be around for the Dolphins 2nd Round selection. Williams will be the center piece in front of Dansby to help him be successful. Parcell's is a few pieces away from a very good defense and good Nose Tackles are a rare breed and hard to come by.
13. San Francisco 49ers -- C.J. Spiller -- Clemson -- Running Back
The Niners have been known to draft playmakers in the first round. Fortunately they have the luxury of two picks. Spiller will solidify the gaping hole in special teams both in kick and punt return and also be a huge threat on offense. The NFL has turned in to a place where having two solid RB's is almost a necessity. He also will help in preserving Gore's shelf life and make for a lighter work load. Gore will still be able to get his 1000 yards and should do so a lot easier than before with Spiller contribting. Singletary has been clamoring for a change-of-pace back since he took over. He didn't get one last year as he was a rookie coach. If Spiller falls in to Singletary's lap here, I don't think it will take very long before Goodell walks up to that podium and announces Spiller's name as the 49ers first of two picks.
14. Seattle Seahawks -- Charles Brown -- USC -- Offensive tackle
If.... and it's a big if, the Hawks still have a second first round pick, they should go offensive line with it. They need all the help they can get there. Especially at the tackle position. Brown is a converted tight end. When he came to USC, he did so as a tight end. He is very atheltic and will fit well in to Carroll's schemes. He already knows what he is getting here and will be happy to take him in the 1st Round at 14.
15. New York Giants -- Mike Iupati -- Idaho -- Offensive Guard
The G-men addressed their secondary concerns and paid Antrell Rolle the largest contract of any safety in the history of the NFL. Not sure if it was warranted, in fact I know it wasn't but in this market the Giants were forced to spend that much to patch up a huge area of concern. The guard position for the Giants is a concern and mainly the Left Guard position which is Iupati's strong suit. Eli Manning is getting paid big bucks and New York will want to protect their main asset. While this may be seen as a slight reach, it just makes sense for them to go here.
16. Tennessee Titans -- Derrick Morgan -- Georgia Tech -- Defensive End
With the loss of Vanden Bosch to the Lions, the already struggling pass rush of the Titans will need to be accounted for. Morgan could be an upgrade from Vanden Bosch and has a simialr motor and work ethic as VB did only more youthful. This could be a perfect fit for Morgan.
17. San Francisco 49ers -- Brandon Graham -- Michigan -- Defensive End/ Linebacker
While most people will be hoping for a 1st Round Tackle to be selected in here, or with the 13th pick, the Niners may play it smart and realize that Okung is the only Tackle worthy of being selected in the 1st Round. With Berry and Thomas gone, and the concerns with Mays, it may be better to wait until later on to get a safety. A tackle in the 2nd and a safety in the 3rd may be the way they go. Graham will be a menace on the pass rush making everyone's jobs easier.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers -- Taylor Mays -- USC -- Safety
Ryan Clark is on his way out... it's just a matter of when and where. Palumalu would be the perfect person to mentor Taylor Mays and would be a knockout pick to pair up aside the long-haired, hard-hitting, ball-hawking samoan safety. It's too bad there won't be any Quarterbacks here because they may need one. If I was their FO, I'd be making some phone calls to their unfriendly neighbors in Philly.
19. Atlanta Falcons -- Sean Weatherspoon -- Missouri -- Linebacker
And area of need and possibly the BPA at this pick. Weatherspoon will thrive in this defense. With the addition of Robinson and Weatherspoon to that defense, the Falcons will put themselves back in contention for a playoff spot assuming Turner and Ryan can stay healthy this coming season.
20. Houston Texans -- Trent Williams -- Oklahoma -- Offensive Tackle
Bob McNair has publicly stated that they need to shore up the interior of the offensive line. Williams, while not great in space could fit decently enough as a Guard. I look for the Texans to go after Tomlinson or possibly Jones in free agency. But Williams would possibly be the best player available on the Texans board right here.
21. Cincinnati Bengals -- Carlos Dunlap -- Florida -- Defensive End
While most mocks previous to this one have had the Bengals chosing a wide receiver, they should make a push for either T.O. or Marshall... or so it's been rumored. We'll see what happens. But until then, I am going to go with my instinct and trust that there is some truth to those rumors. The Bengals did not have much of a pass rush and Dunlap, if he doesn't take plays off in the NFL, should make a big difference in that Cincy D.
22. New England Patriots -- Brandon Spikes -- Florida -- Linebacker
I fully expect the Patiots to go hard after Leigh Bodden. The Patriots could go two ways with this pick though. They need to replace Seau and Spikes will bring the same type of energy to that already good linebacking crew. There are alot of good corners that will be available in the 2nd Round even if the Pats don't land Bodden in free agency.
23. Green Bay Packers -- Terrence Cody -- Alabama -- Nose Tackle
It doesn't seem like there is a ton (no pun intended) of tread left on Ryan Pickett's tires. He is getting up there in age and with no offensive tackles really worth 1st round status, Cody could make a major impact if he can keep his weight around the 350 mark. Especially with all those speedy linbackers behind him. This will boost the leverage in what that defense will be able to do by alot. Al Harris is expected to push back his bonus and Charles Woodson should return as well. The Tackle position would be addressed in the 2nd if the Packers went this way.
24. Philadelphia Eagles -- Navorro Bowman -- Penn State -- Linebacker
The Eagles are running very thin at the Linebacker position. Bowman provides versatlity and this will give the Eagles the flexibilty to make some other moves at the Linebacker position. Bowman's strength is probably playing outside linebacker but he can play in the middle if need be too. While the Eagles are stacked at the QB position, they lack a lot in the LB dept.
25. Baltimore Ravens -- Kyle Wilson -- Boise State -- Cornerback
The Ravens have done their job at giving Joe Flacoo a bunch of targets on offense and will now be able to focus on the defensive side of the ball. Lewis and Reed will be retiring soon and the Ravens are running thin on Corners. Wilson could compete for a starting job and one of the other guys could be slid over to the nickel corner. The future of Ed Reed is still up in the air so this would be a solid move by Baltimore's front office.
26. Arizona Cardinals -- Daryl Washington -- TCU -- Linebacker
Rolle's out, Rhodes is in. Dansby's out and the Cards will need someone to step in and fill that defensive Quarterback role. Washington has miles of upside and could come in and give the same production as Dansby did his very first year. This will be a big hole filled and Cards fans will be able to exhale and breath easy knowing that they have a guy like Washington in there to fill some pretty big shoes left behind by Dansby.
27. Dallas Cowboys -- Golden Tate -- Notre Dame -- Wide Reciever
Eveidently Roy Williams was not the answer in Dallas. Golden Tate ran a 40-time that everyone was not expecting. Going back and looking at all that Tate did while at Notre Dame I think Jones would be hard pressed to pass on a tough, gritty, playmaking wide receiver that resembles guys like Hines Ward and Anquan Boldin. Dallas has been through a drought in the time between possessing a great wide receiver tandem. Miles Austin and Golden Tate could provide that for Dallas once again.
28. San Diego Chargers -- Ryan Mathews -- Fresno State -- Running Back
The Chargers may go a different way with their first rounder but I think almost everyone expects them to go this route unless they acquire Jones or someone like that in free agency. I happen to think that the Chargers are looking to get young again at this position. There are other running backs that can be obtained later and there's always the possibility that they replace Antonio Cromartie with this pick, but I'm going to stay put here with this one until free agency settles a bit more.
29. New York Jets -- Morgan Burnett -- Georgia Tech -- Safety
With the departure of Rhodes, the Jets are left without much to show for at the safety position. With Berry, Thomas, and Mays off the board, the Jets will have no choice but to reach for Burnett here. However, Burnett has enough upside that it may not end up being a reach. In this mock, a lot of the Jets options may not be there. Look for the Jets to possibly be one of the teams hooting up the boards with a trade.
30. Minnesota Vikings -- Patrick Robinson -- Florida State -- Cornerback
The Vikes are running on a skeleton crew in their secondary. Robinson is a hard-hitting very good cover corner. Robinson has the potential to start immediately and would challenge Winfield and Griffin for their starting jobs. Griffin may be the guy to slide over should Robinson beat him out.
31. Indianapolis Colts -- Jared Odrick -- Penn State -- Defensive Tackle
The Colts already have two dynamic pass rushers on the ends of their defensive line but don't have much presence in the middle. Odrick would come in and would upgrade the defensive line making them one of the scariest defensive lines in the NFL.
32. New Orleans Saints -- Eric Norwood -- S. Carolina -- Outside Linebacker
The loss of Scott Fujita to the Cleveland Browns will force the Saints to draft Outside Linebacker Eric Norwood. Norwood could potentially be the steal of the 1st round for the Saints with this selection. The luck in New Orleans will press forward and the Saints will benefit truck loads with this BPA plus needs pick here.

Honestly,
If Berry falls to 7, I think the Niners should seriously consider moving up to get him. That would solidify our secondary immediately with Clements still on the team, considering Goldson should slide to SS. And then they can grab a CB later in the draft, or wait til next year to grab a highly rated CB.
And since I’m now of the mindset that trading a 2nd rounder for Bushrod is in our best interest, we can get a T prospect late in the draft in hopes that he has upside as a backup.
I dont think they will though. I cannot see McCloughan making a move like that in the draft. There’s enough talent to warrant keeping both picks where they are at. The deal would have to be brought to us by another team and be too sweet to pass up for Scot and the FO to jump.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
I don't think they will but I really feel they should.
I think if the Fo is paying any attention to what he can bring to the table, they’d be stupid not to. both 1st rounders for their pick and 2nd and 3rd is a great move, IMO.
Browns #7- 1500pts, browns # 39 510 pts., browns # 71 235 pts = 2245 pts
49ers two 1st rounders 2200 pts and round 5 pick 35.5 pts 97th if neccessary)
We would have E berry
two 2nd rounders 2 3rd rounders
Which would give us a chance at bushrod, chance to add key players at position of need and a better selection for later rounds and can also avoid 2 first round contracts for renewal in the future.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Right...
Why are you not the GM? Honestly, this would make us immediately better at more than one spot and give us a chance to add quality depth. I know Sing said they’re going to stay true to the board, but that’s just foolish if their net gain is greater than their loss. And in this situation, that’d be the case.
Except for the fact that
A safety of Berry’s caliber would make this team good enough to reach the post season along with a having a top 5 defense.
My Ultimate Realistic Mock Draft for 49ers
1A) Anthony Davis - RT Rutgers
1B) C.J. Spiller - RB/KR/PR Clemson
2) Kareem Jackson - CB Alabama
3) Demaryius Thomas - WR Georgia Tech
4) Mike Johnson - OG Alabama
5) Sean Canfield - QB Oregon State
6) Keaton Kristic - OLB Oregon State
7) Dexter Davis - OLB/DE Arizona State
1 player is not going to make us reach theplayoffs. As much as the idea sounds good to the ear and appealing to the eye, it just is not a reality. Will it make us better? Possibly… but you can never count chickens before they hatch. For all we know, Berry could bust. Stranger has happened and personally, I’d rather keep the 2 firsts right where they’re at. I don’t think the FO is going to make any crazy jumps as they’re showing us in free agency. They’re going to stay put and if Berry falls then great, if not, they’ll look at other options. Sing already said they’re going to stay true to the board which in sorts eliminates the concept of moving up. We may as well wash that out of our heads cause it’s looking about 99.9% that it’s not going to happen.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Berry is one of the closest things to a surefire superstar safety
I’ve never seen a safety with his skill set and playmaking ability ever at the collegiate level (Never watched Ed Reed in college). We have one main weakness and it’s in the secondary. Yea I know pass rush needed for an elite defense, but we virtually have NO speed in the secondary. Clements I remember ran a 4.3 back when he was drafted which was ages ago but he has lost that speed now. Michael Lewis can’t cover anyone and is only good at tackling. I believe one elite player will be enough to make this team have an elite defense. I bet you a lot of other people and analysts feel the same. Actually, analysts do feel the same because I have heard them talk about the 49ers needing one more good player to have a scary defense. And also, am I the only one that likes Manny Lawson? I think he’s one of the best coverage linebackers in the league and is a great run supporter. He’s very disciplined and still has more potential to grow in rushing the passer.

I am not denying that we don’t need a replacement for Lewis back there but he is not the only option and we should not be that desperate that we would throw all our eggs in to one basket just find out in the end that the basket had a hole in the bottom of it and all the eggs broke. When you have two draft picks and a few major problem areas, you shouldn’t take that for granted because there’s a shiny golden egg in the window. And that’s where I am coming from.
Take LaRon Landry for instance. He was drafted in ‘07 (6th pick overall) out of LSU and was receiving all the same hype that Berry is now. I personally think Berry will pan out but my point in all of this is that we shouldn’t chuck all our options out for one for someone that potentially end up being a LaRon Landry. Landry is good, but he’s not a superstar. I think that is the same approach that Scot M will take from what I have observed so far. If Berry falls to 13 for some unforseen reason, then the Niners won’t hesitate. But dont count on a trade up is all I am saying.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Landry
was a known for being a huge hitter (Taylor Mays esque) and eventually became a great safety, but I don’t think his skill set ever matched Berry’s in college. Berry has incredible out of this world coverage skills and could probably excel at cornerback and be the next Darelle Revis.

Landry was known for being a hitter
and a ball-hawk… the same as Berry. Are you new to watching college football. I am not saying that to be smart but it seems that way.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Berry is more known for manning up and ball hawking then hitting, there is a difference.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
Not exactly go back and look at the stats and highlights…pretty close in styles of play
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Can we just kill the Berry talk already. He isn’t in our range of pickings, that is almost for sure. And like Drew said, it is probably 99.9% that we dont trade up for a pick. Wouldn’t make sense and we aren’t desperate enough at any position to make a move like that for anyone in this draft for the picks we have.
For the simple fact that it was stated in the mother of this comment thread, Berry is the discussion at hand.
Move to another comment is how you rid yourself of being annoyed, if that’s the case.
If he falls to 7, we'd be better off trading up.
1a E Berry, 2a Valdheer, 2b to Saints for Bushrod, 3a. Mike Johnson, 3b DeMaryius Thomas, 4 Owusu-Ansah, 6 Brandon Banks, 7 Jamar Chaney
TWO FIRSTS USED
I think he COULD drop. Doubtful out of Top 10 but you never know.
And rlott is right, hop on a FA fanpost if you don’t want to see us beat a dead horse.
The end of the world is 2012, we keep this up and it will come sooner. LOL
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Well you dont know if people are going to beat a dead horse until you start reading! So if your going to do so and don’t want to hear me bitch about it, don’t do it.
Internet gangasta? Sounds like another one to me.
Do you have typing control issues? Obviously you do have an issue with it, you don’t have to type, especially since if people want to talk about it, they will talk about it.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.
I don't hear you either, I'm reading.

Berry WILL not Bust, he will not. The only thing that will prevent him from having a great career is injury.
Just as you say h can bust we can draft two busts. Personally I’d rather move the picks because our 17th overall will be a reach and Spiller at 13 is one as well. Rather than reaching at two picks I’d rather move it to add aditional picks in rounds 2 and 3 and there isn’t much to say to rebut the value in later rounds.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Spiller is not a reach because of the following reason’s:
a. He fixes several areas with one pick
b. He is at the worst, a homerun hitter on special teams. (i.e. Hester or Cribbs)
c. He could potentially be a replacement for Gore and we wont have to worry about a replacement later like the Chragers currently are.
d. He can line up on the outside, similar to what Gore did a few times this season and be a threat there.
e. He would help Gore keep a bit of tread on his tires and wear down as fast through the course of the season.
f. He adds a ton of value.
g.I could go on and on.
What does Berry do? Patches a hole at strong safety. I mean it’s an important one and I understand that but we can do that with several other players. A Reshad Jones in the 3rd, or Nate Allen, Morgan Burnett would suffice and more than likely be an upgrade over Lewis. All three of those guys have range which is what you said we didn’t have last year.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Drafting a RB at 13th overall that will not come close to have of the carries is a reach in my opinion.
The kr/pr need can be dressed via UDFA just as easy in the 3rd or 4th rounds and that is very true.
What does Berry do? He can cover TEs, he can man up in the slot, he can read QB’s and make plays he can return punts. He cna play any defensive back position and probably better than any player we currently have. When you have a player lie that it helps Willis as well as OLB’s and the front 7 get to the passer with coverage sacks. Clements will be aided, since he has needed a safety that can cover his back for years.
The only element that Spiller will bring we can’t get in later rounds is a homerun threat and that does not warrant a 13th overall selection, especially when it is likely he falls to our 17th.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
It doesn’t matter if he’s only getting 10 touches a game cause it’s enough for him to break one loose. And his ability on Special teams is lethal as well. Anytime he touches the ball could be a touchdown. Not a reach. Not at all, not even close. C’mon man.. your just pissed cause I said we don’t need Berry which is true. The guy only had 2 INT’s last year and played every game. Spiller had 300+ all-purpose yards in more than half the games he played in. Played hurt etc. He’s a warrior and multi dimenional…. not just one. You’ve been on board with Spiller this whole time and you change it cause of what I said about Berry. Quite obvious what’s going on here.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Berry had offenses designed to avoid him and you know that. I don't care that you say we won't trade up for him, I don't think we will, but don't be foolish and say that he is nothing more than a Strong safety.
It does matter how many touches he gets. We can take Ford, Holliday, and plenty other players for kr/pr and our running game was fine without an OL. Spiller has higher bust potential as a full time RB than Berry at any position in the DBfield.
I am not agianst spiller i have always thought it was a reach because I see him falling to 17 easily, and I have always said that. You are the one that gets uptight anytime anyone doesn’t have spiller mocked at 13. Child please. Those 300 all purpose vs an extremely inferior defense is what? I would like to get Spiller, however I think Berry would do more for the team. He is a game changing threat on defense. Too bad we didn’t stink it up enough to get both, but anyways.
TO say we don’t need Berry is ridiculous, because we don’t need Spiller, we only need to get an OL, that is an unavoidable need. we can win without either player so that point is extremely moot.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Perspective
Spiller = Game changer on offense and special teams
Berry = Game changer on defense
Team weaknesses = Offense and special teams
Team strengths = Defense
To me that’s a no brainer.
Hopefully we end up with both and then we’re both happy.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Berry also returns punts and our KR was fine.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
Fine or not, I dont think we’ll see Morgan back there next season for KR’s. And that’s even if we don’t get Spiller.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
I dont either, what's your point.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
Also Berry did not do PR’s frequently enough to say he did it full-time. Spiller is hands down a better returner punt or kick than Berry. TD’s, Yards, etc… Spiller is better.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
At kick return, Berry is better than all of our DB's, just name a position.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
Neither di Ed Reed, but in OT situations he was used or in big games when a play at punt return was needed.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
I agree
Not only is Spiller a game changer for a non-lethal offense, but he also gives that dimension on special teams. I have heard people compare him to Chris Johnson. If that’s even remotely true then he is a potential franchise running back how will be a great compliment to Frank, in my opinion that would be a great one, two punch.
1 player will not catapult this offense.

You know this how? Got that magic 8-ball out again?
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
He is partially right though
We still have glaring holes across the OL and Spiller “will not catapult” our offense unless provided with running room.
Here's hoping 2010 is the end of our drought.
Spiller makes running room when there isn’t
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Not if he is hit as soon as he touches the ball, ow you're being ridiculous
I shoul just call him Super Spiller, don’t get him a jersy get him a cape and put a S on his chest……..LOL
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
Same reason you know E Berry won't make the d top 5.

This is true
Fortunately for us we have more than one draft pick! I just think its important that we address our need for an offensive playmaker and like stated above, you get on to change pace for Gore, and a threat as a punt/kick returner as well. O-line can still be addressed and there are still some good secondary players out there. I was pretty impressed with Goldson myself this season I hope he can improve on what he has already done and the FO is able to get him a nice contract.
weaknesses = OL, Secondary, ST’s
strengths = run defense
There is a little more detail into what you have listed, the offense as a whole is not the problem.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
Weaknesses on offense = OL, QB, WR’s, back up RB…scoring… pretty much everything.
Weaknesses on defense = OLB, SS.
There’s your detail elaborated on even more.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
What about the hole at RDE and CB's.
I thought serviceable wasn’t good enough. That is exactly what we have in the entire DBfield aside from Goldson.

Justin Smith, Spencer and Clements? What’s wrong with them?
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
I want Greg Ellis for LDE since Raiders just cut him...
That would shore up our DL pretty well if you ask me.
I’m thinking that’s what rlott meant.
I wanted him last year, he can play OLB and LDE in the Nickel.

I'd be happy to have him, then we don't have to use a pick and wait on a player to develop and have an impact.

Serious as a heart attack.

For one Clements is not good in coverage downfield and neither is Spencer for that matter.
They can’t cover downfield. Horrible at it. Than the sensational front 7 can’t cover the screen, the defense has several holes, if you want to break it down further. The WR core or corp, however you look at it, is just like the DB’s a bunch of what ifs and has beens.

So I guess we can say that Revis and Sheppard suck too eh? See what I mean? You are going a little overboard. Our SS was primarily responsible for the blown coverages in several scenarios. The was our schemes are set up, the Corners actually did their jobs exceptionally
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Bad example, while the jets D surrendered big plays you know it had nothing to do with Revis, that's ridiculous, even from you.
That was also due to our FS and our inability of our corners to cover man to man downfield when there is no safety help there.
So No I don’t see what you mean. Sheppard was abused, constantly. down the middle of the field in the heart of a zone which can’t be blamed on corners. I am not going overboard you are not being realistic in sayiing our corners did their jobs exceptionally. Go back and look at the numbers and remember the flea flicker, that wasn’t on anyone but the corner and maybe Goldson. So, an official child please, to that comment.

I have read....
….that the job of our corners in our defense is to cover a small swatch of land, and our Safeties are to cover deep. So if a Corner get’s beat deep, it’s not his fault, it’s the Safeties fault.
This was explained in an article about why we wouldn’t go after D. Robinson because our Defense doesn’t require ELITE DBs due to Safety help.
Yup
Our CBs are fine. We really, really need a cover safety. Michel Lewis is not good back there.

They deep ball is the safeties responsibility.
I will try to look it up later, but don’t have time right now. It was either sfgate (Lynch), pressdemocrat (Maoicco), of sacbee (Barrows.
its the safeties responsibility to help. However, if you are a CB in man coverage, and the man you are covering catches a pass, you are always somewhat at fault.

and just an fyi… the ACC has some pretty stout defenses.
Florida State
Miami
Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
Maryland
etc.
There have been great players… hall of famers even that have come from alot worse divisions so you should know better than to use division as an argument. I actually tried that once too but quickly realized just how off that arguement is. Special players come from all over the place.

Honestly
I’d take Spiller at 17 if he ONLY turned out to be a ST beast. 10 touches a game, and a game changing on ST is worth that pick to me. Hester at his prime was worth that pick. I just think Spiller has sooo many different opportunity to help out on offense, it’s hard to see him bust.

Hell i would call for Scott McG’s head if that happens and he DOESNT trade up for him.

There are too many needs in a strong draft class for the 49ers to be trading up for one player.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
And I disagree

Have to disagree simply because it is a strong draft class, and the right trade could net us additional 2nd and 3rd round picks instead of reaching at 17 for a RT.

With those picks, you may come out of draft with 1 starter, and 4 role players for depth, vs two starters and 2 role players if you leave it be
When are we suppose to rely on our position coaches?
With all the experience of coaching and playing with our OL coach and assistant, why is that we can’t draft a good player in the 2nd that can start?
Plus there seem to be more bust potential with the tackles his year in the first round based on projections.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
I think we actually do better in the 2nd round than the 1st
2008—Chilo Rachal. He’s good and he’ll be around for awhile.
2005— David Baas. He’s been a decent starter. Not star quality but has definitely played to his pick level.
2004—Justin Smiley
2004—Shantae Spencer
2003 we drafted Anthony Adams who has never been more than a backup
2001—Jamie Winborn. Total bust
2000—John Engelberger who was a solid, if unspectacular defensive lineman.
From that quick look it seems that we draft ok in the 2nd round—the players we get end up starting for the most part, but aren’t stars. In other words we can’t find the hidden gems that other teams seem to be able to find.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
The only players playing at a high level from the first round are Willis and Davis
Trading up to get Berry and gaining more picks in the 2nd and 3rd should appear to be an easy decision, I don’t get the logic of some.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Lack of faith in FO.
Smiley considered Rachal and Baas as a success story in 2nd round. I wouldn’t go that far, and I don’t agree they are success stories.
To me, first round picks are harder to screw up, not that they are a guarantee, but we have a better chance, of grabbing the right guy in 1st round, then 2nd round. I just feel 2 2nds and 2 3rds equal a bunch of Baas and Rachals on the team. I’d rather a Willis and Staley in the first, than a Berry and a bunch of Baas, Rachals, and Coffees in 2nd and 3rd…..
In your argument, you are assuming we get the most out of the extra 2nd and 3rd, I just don’t see it.
Hope that makes sense?
See I'm just the opposite
I think 1st round picks are easier to screw up. It’s basically a 50/50 shot that you’ll get a guy who will start and be good for you. Baas has been an ok starter for us basically since he was drafted—what more do you want from a 2nd rounder?
Rachal didn’t start playing until week 11 or so of last season but started all of this season and I think he’ll be a good interior lineman for a long time.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
50/50 in 1st is better than probably 30/70 in 2nd round.
I just think we have a better chance to get a starter in 1st round, because these guys are widely believed to be able to come in and start right away, than guys in 2nd. Guys in 2nd, have holes in their game, which is why they are in the 2nd, and we have to sort through them to decide who has holes that can overcome them. I think that’s where we get in trouble, we pick guys with flaws that can’t get past them instead of guys that can get better and want to get better.
It’s simply a matter of hitting more times in 1st than 2nd.
But, this years draft is heralded as one of the deepest drafts in years.
3rd round kr/pr can easily be a starter. RT and LG, can easily start from the 2nd round, so can WR’s, sometimes a lot of teams have the same 1st round need and leave 1st round prospects to be picked in the second. That 30/70, 50/50 is more like 50/50 for 3 rounds depending on scouts, and recently ours have blown some picks.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
It's not about the FO, it is more about the value players where we are drafting.
I think Spiller is the only player that will have enough value for either pick byt the time the players come off of the board. I think both of our pics will end up being reaches, the best tackles of the round will be gone and the DB’s, so we take DLineman? Cornerbacks? I don’t think we’ll be hapy this draft at all.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
I thougth we were talking about 2nd round picks?
why is that we can’t draft a good player in the 2nd that can start?
And yes I wouldn’t mind trading our 1b to get additional 2nd round picks because I’m not sold on any of the guys who will be there for us at #17
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
And you're sold on who at 13?
I think we will be playing bad basketball, reaching like crazy.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
I think Spiller at 13 isn't a bad reach
and Graham at 17 isn’t such a bad reach either.
The thing is if a guy grades out to being a 1st round talent does it really matter what pick he is?
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
You can reach for a 1st round prospect in the first round.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Depends on your philosophy I guess
I can understand calling it a reach grabbing Maurkice Pouncey #1 overall, but outside of the top 15 I don’t think there’s too much reaching.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
I agree
The think is, the FO won’t worry if a guy should go around 25 and they grab him at 17. You won’t get a shot at him in 2nd round, so you grab him when you can. Same goes for 2nd round. I remember reading something last year that the FO doesn’t assign numbers, as in, this guy is the 31st best player in the draft. They assign grades to them, if he is the highest guy on THEIR board when it’s their time to pick, it doesn’t matter if dude is a Guard and supposed to be picked at end of 1st.
I heard they asign rounds to guys and they traded the 2nd rounder last year because they didn't want to reach. Byrd, Butler, and another player were snatched up before we got to pick.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Pouncey in the first is a reach, IMO.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
I could easily see a team like the Colts grabbing him
he’s the type of versatile player they love

Well yeah
I wouldn’t want him at either of our picks. I’d consider Iupati at #17 though

Well the good news is that if we draft him
to play OLB he has a slightly better chance at succeeding than if he plays DE
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.
I disagree, I think he can play either, which is double for us, simply because we will have a pass rush out of our nickel on 3rd and long.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
I'm talking statistically here
based on my research from 1990 to 2007 of all first round draft picks.
DE—55% bust rate
OLB—46% bust rate
LB—30% bust rate.
Of course every draft is different and every person is different, but those are the averages.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Those bust rate averages don't apply to every draft in my opinion, simply because you have poor analysis and bad moves, ie. the Raidahs.
Graham seems to be monsterous and the idea of him busting, IMO, is not likely.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
The DE is bust rate is so bad because the NFL was filled with 4-3 defensive teams absolutely reaching at the position year after year. The last decade if a prospective DE had a pulse he was drafted in the 1st round.
If we're going to draft a DE
I like Brandon Graham. He’s experienced, physical, and produced despite being the only guy with talent on Michigan’s defense.
The only problem is that the Niners likely won’t draft him because of his size.
Also, that would mean the Niners would have 3 first-rounders in their linebacking corps.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
Size is an issue. I think the standards on size for this position might be changing. It’s been pointed out that the league leaders in sacks are undersized. Also, prototypical size DE/OLB pass rushers just haven’t been showing up in the draft and when they do they haven’t produced on the field. Maybe the 49ers would bend.
3 First rounders in the linebacking corp isn’t a bad thing. I remember watching NFL Films Top 10 defenses and the common theme was an unbelievable linebacker corp.
I thought the prototype was not what we draft.
tHE NUMBERS SPEAK FOR ITSELF.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
hey, I was being descriptive, not normative.
Interestingly enough, I think Graham would be more of an ‘exception’ than Spiller would be.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
Directly correlated to difficulty of position
and payscale
since the research is done from 1990.. the analysis could be a bit skewed because there has just be a recent resurgence of the 3-4 defense, and it’s a given that DE and OLB perform different functions within their respective schemes. The ILB in both schemes I’d imagine there’s very little difference(except in the 3-4 you’re shedding more blocks). WHEN/IF Willis resigns with the 49ers he won’t be paid as much as the Suggs and Peppers of the world even though he’s arguably one of the top 5 best players in the NFL.
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 7.Quinton Andrews 7.Preston Parker
It's why I separated DE from OLB
the first time I did the research I just included all DE, but some of those DE played OLB.
I’m not saying that Graham will be a bust, because obviusly every draft is different. Some drafts every OLB picked succeeded, some drafts everyone failed. Those are simply the averages over time.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
But to include 3-4 and 4-3 OLB is what I'm saying "skewed" the analysis
—
The Bust Rate has to do with how difficult the position is to play. Which is why it’s wise for a GM to select Pass rushers, LT, CB, QBs in the 1st round.. because 1st rounders are suppose to have a higher percentage of success at a position that’s a gamble.. that as you’ve shown is not in the organization’s favor.
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 7.Quinton Andrews 7.Preston Parker
Brooks
Isn’t that what we use Brooks for? Not to say that Brooks is a better option, but I believe that’s how they line him up in nickel situations. Of course, they can slide Smith inside with Franklin and have Brooks and Graham both rush in nickel package instead of leaving Manny or Parys on the field.
Or, they can see if they can get that 2nd rounder they tendered him with and just replace him with Graham.
If they have it isn't very often, he is in our base 3-4 set, they use Haralson there more than any other OLB and none of our DE's are good enough.
If he falls to 7, we'd be better off trading up.

Plus, I think the Niners would use Graham as more of a LB. Or some sort of hybrid that can be used in multiple situations
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.
Wait...
Where’s Joe Haden?
If he’s at #20, the Texans jump on him. No joke.
Offensive line be darned, they play Peyton 2 times a year.
I don't think Haden will be a first round pick at all.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
If Haden does fall out of the first, I’d be willing to bet someone trades up to get him early round 2.
Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.
Like the Rams would pass on him?
Someone projected top 10 falling to the 2nd? Not even they could blunder that one.
Possible. I also think they could be swayed by a nice package of picks. The Rams need help all over the place.

Not saying to draft Haden
And scouts and everyone knew Jenkins was eventually going to be moved to safety (which hasn’t officially happened yet if I’m correct).

So he’d be possibly the 4th best safety prospect? Still doesn’t make him an automatic 1st round pick.

Jenkins played some Nickel CB for the Saints in the playoffs.
Did alright when I saw him. They’ve got some good corners on that team, so it’s not necessarily a knock for him to not be one of their top 2 corners as a rookie.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
Jenkins shut down one of the leagues best pass catchers and route runners. He is being moved ot safety due to the play of the starters. The move to safety does not mean he can't play the corner, especially with all the shuffling needed with their roster
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Hes being moved to safety since he has
stiff hips and is too slow to play cb.

Jenkins shut down Welker when the Saints stomped the Pats. 6 catches for probably 30 yds or somethin close to that.
Welker had 123 catches and 13 or 1400 yards and Jenkins covered him man to man.

Jenkins had a lot to do with the offense of New England not getting first downs and YAC. He was all over Welker. Regardless of what the score is the pats are passing the ball.

I like what graham can bring to the table and would hope the Niners pick him before spiller
Only because I think spiller will fall to #17.

Graham is interesting
His scouting report, for those who aren’t familiar with him.
Always a good idea to get more pash rush.
I’d assume he’d be a third down rusher for the Niners. Any opinions if he could play in a two point on first and second down?
Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.
Hes as good at pass rush as he is at run support he could easily stat over all of our OLB's.

stat=start
sorry, gettin a lil’ jayjonna up in here
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
How is he dropping back in coverage?

Don't know, he didn't do it much and aside form Lawson our OLB's don't do well.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
It’s a good concern. Successful 3-4 defensive teams has shown with enough seasons their OLB prospects can learn to be decent in coverage. The critical area is being able to pass rush. If the player can get sacks than the team can get the player on the field. As seasons progress they learn a more varied skill set and eventually become an every down OLB.
It might be better to start Graham over Haralson. Lawson showed some promise last year.

And they barely lost to them each time they played. You can find an upgrade over what Robinson was in the 2nd possibly even 3rd rounds. You need to get that ground game rolling and the interior line has been the sole cause on why there were issues running the ball. It wasn’t the RB’s. You lost by 3 point to the Colts the first time and a TD in the second game due in large part to the lack of ground game.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Yes, but that doesn’t explain why you have Haden completely falling out of the 1st round. Really, I think it’s a pretty good mock (among the best I’ve seen), but that’s an omission that kinda puzzles me considering he’s been called the best CB in the entire class.
He ran a 4.6!
That is two tenths slower than CBs going to be drafted in the 4th round. He basically ran the same time twice at the Combine so it’s pretty close to a confirmation that he is going to be slow for his position. What team is really going to use a 1st pick on CB who is considered slow? It hasn’t worked out too well lately.
Syd Thompson was highly productive in college too. He runs a 4.6 and would be lucky to sniff the 3rd round.
And he is small, this league's WRs are either big and strong or small and quick, and he can't cover either with that speed and from what LaFell did to him, he is overrated.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Haden is small?
Since when is 5’ 10" 3/4 and 193 small? That’s probably about average if not slightly above.
He still has time to up that 40 time. He looked awkward running the 40, so I imagine that he’ll improve at his pro day once he gets his technique right.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
Average?? he is small due to his lack in speed.
The league is changing, I thought you knew.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
How does that say that. Small corners typically have good to great speed and Haden is small and doesn't have that.
By that measure, Hester’s speed would help in his lack of size, bt since he is not a CB, anymore, he doesn’t fit the argument.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
I personally
measure a player by his overall size not just his height. Haden has ok size at barely (not even) 5’11 but his frame is really small.

What do you guys think will come of the Seahawks and marshall?
6th pick or 14th pick? I honestly think they both want the same player in clausen.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Thankyou, although I would rather have Goldson and Berry in the defensive backfield.
Drew and I disagree on Goldson’s deep cover skills, but we agree on the idea of Goldson potentially being a probowl Safety.

I think the Jags signing Kampman all but killed Berry dropping to #13. I thought it was looking good until that signing.
This
Is so very true
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Maybe the Jags would deal. Maybe they still would reach on DE because they still sorta suck at the position with Kampman.
They have a young DE that was a high pick on the other side of the field, plus they need a corner and a safety.
They also need help at middle linebacker and in my opinion DT is the biggest need, they cannot stop the run or pass.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
McClain should still be on the board. Lets see . . .
- St. Louis (1-15) – No
- Detroit (2-14) – No
- 3Tampa Bay (3-13) – No, Tampa is too cheap
- Washington (4-12) – No
- Kansas City (4-12) – Have bigger needs than safety
- Seattle (5-11) – I don’t see Carroll taking the safe pick
- Cleveland (5-11) – I don’t see Holmgrem taking the safe pick
- Oakland (5-11) – No, has spent a lot of picks at S with no results
- Buffalo (6-10) – Likely a QB or OT
- Jacksonville (7-9) – Possible, maybe McClain – they reach for need
- Denver – from Chicago (7-9) – Dawkins has a huge contract
- Miami (7-9) – Possibly, need to learn more about the Fins
McClain
questioning why you say the Chiefs have bigger needs than safety and McClain is an ILB. Oaklan will never surprise me. McClain wouldn’t be a reach there at JVille, but they run a 4-3 and he is a 3-4 ILB and that may make it a reach, but their run D is atrocious. Just asking for clarification.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
McClain could go
5th-12th… any of those teams could take him. I am almost certain he’s gone by 13. Even if he’s not I dont even think it’s be a 50/50 chance that we’d take him. Don’t need him. We’ve got Spikes and Willis and resigned Wilhelm to a new contract to back up Spikes. We can get a replacement for Spikes in the ’11 draft.

huh?
im talking about the post bignerd made that you replied to. it seemed to be going through the teams seeing who would take berry. why else would he bring up dawkins or the secondary. and it appears ur comment is referring to mcclain. not quite sure i get your point
It would be really difficult for the Broncos to leap frog over that 6th pick that Seattle holds to get Clausen. The Chiefs would probably be all over a Brandon Marshall trade but it’s doubtful that the Broncos would trade Marshall to a division rival. So in a sense, if the Broncos do want Clausen, they will have to go through Seattle to get him and Seattle would have to trade that 6th, not the 14th.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
I don't think Marshall is worth the pick with Clausen being an option, at least not to the Seahawks.
It’s gonna be interesting to see how that unfolds, I wouldn’t part with that pick for him at all.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Well the Seahawks are having a private workout with Tebow
if that goes well they may be thinking of picking him up at either #17 if he wows them or in the early stages of the 2nd round.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
I'd hate for Drew K to be wrong that could ocme back on us two times a year.
Maybe the Seahawks don’t want Clausen.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
Oh boy, here we go …2nd Round option maybe?? Patch work on a throwing motion is not going to be enough smiley, sorry. Not for a 1st. He may jump in to the 1st part of that 2nd but not the 1st. Still not enough going for him to warrant a 1st.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
They just traded Seneca Wallace to the Browns
so they have no backup. If they think Tebow is the real deal they could grab him at 17. They also have a high enough pick in the 2nd round that they might want to grab him then. It’s a good fit too because he can sit behind Hasselbeck for a year or two and learn the system before getting fed to the Lion’s den.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Grab him at 17? 14 maybe? I can’t agree with you and it’s not likely. They have an early enough pick to wait for him in the 2nd round.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
If they pick him at 17 they are foolish, and I can see it happening, because I think Carrol is an idiot. Will he deserve the pick, Not IMO.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
14 I mean
Like I’ve said it only takes one team, and if they’re concerned that someone else will grab him in the first they might move on it.
You’re right that their 2nd round pick is probably a better option, but we’ll just have to see what happens.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
I don’t believe the Marshall/Seattle deal gets done. For what’s worth, Marshall said he’d be ok to stay with Denver.

But couldn’t that just be song and dance by Marshall to make more teams interested. I mean if he puts on a front of “I’ll play football and be happy anywhere” then that could conceivably draw more interest. Sales tactic inserted by Maeshall’s agent perhaps?

My mock
Hello, here is who i think the 49ers will be taking.
1A- Spiller
1B- Trent Williams
2- Nate Allen
Thats all i got
All I have to say to your 1B prediction is …BLEHCK!!!!!
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Actually Trent Williams is a very good RT but a lousy LT so it would fit here.
The top two needs that the 49ers have is KR/PR and OT not necessarily in that order.
I think the 49ers would be ok with what they have at OLB especially if the opportunity came up like this to resolve the two biggest needs right away
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I have to understand why a player can be so lousy on left side and so good on the right. I can understand not being as good on the left side but it’s there shouldn’t be 180 degree contrast.
Sims is a real bad RT but he played great at LT last year.
Williams, from what I have read… was a really good RT and sucks at LT.
I have no idea why..
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I would prefer a OT that plays fantastic at both RT and LT like Oher
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I’d prefer in a talented and deep draft class not be taking the guys with the huge red flags when the team has the luxury not to.
LT is a far more difficult position. you don’t always have a TE over there, which means the DEs can run more varied routes. You’re on the blindside the the quarterback doesn’t adjust to you as easily. Every mistake is more costly since you’re on the blindside, if you slip up it could be a forced fumble on you. Also, in college especially, the RDE is always the teams best pass rusher because he has shot at the blind side, so williams could have just had trouble facing superior competition.
by hellaninersfan on Mar 9, 2010 12:20 AM PST up reply actions
Different foot work too.
Williams may not be able to cover one on one very well to his left, but is fine to his right, or with a chip block from TE. You never know, but to me, they are definitely different positions. You could see that with Iupati lining up on right side where he struggled vs LG.
Jim, I am not trying to knock you but you do realize I am a die-hard Sooners fan don’t you? Now it doesn’t make me an expert but it’s enough to know that Trent Williams is the last atckle on the board that I’d want. I had to watch him for three years and it was just as painful for me to have to watch him as it was these couple miserable years of having to watch Adam Snyder. With that being said, I will be "f"ysically ill if the NIners draft Trent Williams in the 1st. Right Tackle/ Left Tackle …Williams is not good at either.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Drew I respect your opinion very much.
Everything I have seen said that he was a good RT. If that is not the case.. Pass on him .
The question is: RT is a BIG question mark for the 49ers and you and I both know that they HAVE to resolve that this offseason. Short of trading for the Raven’s or Saints extra RT, who would you feel is the best bet for us to get. I think they almost have to over draft for a good RT so as to NOT lose out this year.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Since Right Tackle is the problem area and there is really only two people that kind of fit that role in the 1st (Williams and Davis) both of which I think very lowly of, I think we can wait to get our tackle in the 2nd. I’d really like to see us spend a 1st and nab Gaither from the Ravens roster but that’s not likely either.
There are a few guys that could be decent fits in the 2nd like Fox, Saffold, Veldheer, Capers, Black, and Young that would be better than Davis and or Williams but have not received as much hype. And I mean by the true meaning of “hype”. I really feel in my heart of hearts that out of the two (Williams and Davis) one of them, if not both, a sure fire busts waiting on deck.
It’s too bad that Pashos signed with Cleveland because I was banking on that being some insurance for us to not have to worry about it so much. I would like to see us go after a veteran Tackle prospect to replace Pashos but I am not counting on it.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
The RT Issue
1. I agree with you completely regarding Williams and Davis; no way!
2. Pretty wide range of grades among the possibles you mention; from Saffold at an 80 to Black at 50. Any particular reason why you left Kyle Calloway (grade 64) off your list or just an oversight?
3. I’m all for trading #17 (but not #13) to the Ravens for Gaither, who grades out at 74 versus Staley’s 76.
4. There is no way that I would consider Bushrod; I know that some folks on the site like him, but if you look at (or, more precisely, if you believe) grades:
Pashos 68; Snyder 63 (go figure); Sims 58; Bushrod 56. Agaain, no way!

Look at the Scouts Inc rankings with a bit of a jaundiced eye.
I like you use the Scouts Inc rankings a lot especially for current NFL players. But remember that those rankings are for the 2008 season not the 2009 season, those haven’t been factored in yet. So I’d bet that the rankings would be a bit different when we start next season. For example I bet it goes Bushrod, Pashos, Sims, Snyder. Just my take on it.
Balanced draft with offensive emphasis. Pick 13 CJ Spiller 17 to Chargers 28 DI/DET Jared Odrick 48 WR Demaryius Thomas 60 S Reshad Jones
79 Jared Valdheer 110 OG Marshall Newhouse 141 CB Akwasi Owusu Ansah 172 OLB O'Brien Schoffield 208 FB Manase Tonga (He and Britt Miller can swap off and one play blocking TE and one FB)

You have to use YOUR own pick. So it would be #13 or nothing.
I think that’s a big sticking point with SEA landing Marshall. They don’t want to give up their pick, but are fine with giving up #14.

freakin sweet mock. 4 potential superstars within 3 rounds
My Ultimate Realistic Mock Draft for 49ers
1A) Anthony Davis - RT Rutgers
1B) C.J. Spiller - RB/KR/PR Clemson
2) Kareem Jackson - CB Alabama
3) Demaryius Thomas - WR Georgia Tech
4) Mike Johnson - OG Alabama
5) Sean Canfield - QB Oregon State
6) Keaton Kristic - OLB Oregon State
7) Dexter Davis - OLB/DE Arizona State
I like it except for Davis and Mays
Mays has bust written all over him.

I'm curious as to why you don't like Davis
The guy is being regarded as potentially the best tackle in this draft

7) Dexter Davis - OLB/DE Arizona State
Only from what I have read here and other places is that Davis is not as good as the others.
If he is.. then I am definitely ok.. I would rather go with what Drew has at # 13 and choose Spiller.. He solves so many problems.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I don't see the value
in drafting a kick returner and backup running back at #13. There are other potentially good kick returners later in the draft and other potentially good change of pace backs as well. I definitely see value for Spiller at #17 however.

The 49ers, and they are the ones who will do the picks, talked to Jahvid Best or least he shows up on their website
So maybe they are thinking of taking him in the second.
Also, on the OT front.. after last year… a little overpay for a good RT would help ease things. Can you imagine the uproar if they picked a 3rd round RT who couldn’t make the grade?
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
It's too much of a risk for
McCloughan and Singeltary to not draft a tackle in the first round let alone #13th pick. They will reach if they have to which concerns me because a lot of the good tackles may be gone by the time we get our pick. I don’t want to have to settle for Cambell or Brown.

I’m convinced the F.O. does not care. They didn’t seem to be bent out of shape for failing to address a RT last season and letting KR/PR bleed team last season.
Based on their comments about safety. They would take 4th round OT and tell Singletary to make starter out of that player or Boone.
After last year's OL problems. The FO definitely cares.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Of Course if someone like Berry fell to # 13 the 49ers would be hard pressed to not draft him
On the other hand. if Berry did fall to # 13… The trade value for that pick would go through the roof.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
And if they traded the pick that way.. someone would have to make sure rlott#42 doesn't have anything to throw at the TV

No I wouldn't 60 inch LED, I don't want him that bad.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
I'd be shocked if they didn't take Berry at #13
He’s got Singletary DNA. I’d feel great about having him calling signals from day 1.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
If we got Berry, he wouldn’t be the one calling signals. Not as a rookie. Goldson would still have the dot I am sure.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Don't you think Berry has the pedigree to take that on?
He played for a pro-level D-Coordinator in Monte Kiffin.

It is not a risk, you have an OL coach and an assistant they need to do their jobs or prove they can't. The Ravens always draft great OL in later rounds and they do it consistently.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
The probability or getting a good tackle in the 2nd and beyond
will be really low and Singletary and McCloughan need to shore up that tackle position this year. Who’s gonna blossom in the later parts of this draft? Jason Fox? Vladmir Ducasse? Roger Saffold?

Valdheer is better than those 3, but you never know with OL. We aren't talent scouts, you can't put too much stock in what these draft gurus suggest.

But there's a reason
Why those 3 aren’t in the 1st round, and its based on their performance and possibly upside.

That’s the choice we’re going to have. Okung and Bulaga will be gone. Williams and Davis IMO don’t cut it. So, your left with Campbell and Brown, both of whom are a reach at #17; average ranking of 25 and 31 respectively.
That’s why trading for Gaither for #17 (if the Ravens will do the deal) makes sense. Otherwise, you’re probably looking at Saffold at #49, Veldheer at #79, or Calloway at #110.

He was not so good
when he was injured. But did you also know that he’s a better run-blocker than Okung and has more potential to be a great pass blocker? I think he’ll be the poor man’s Michael Oher of the draft but man oh man. Oher is gonna be an all-pro soon. I would like to see a matchup between Oher and DeMarcus Ware. I have never seen Ware get denied a sack when he really wanted it.

I would also like to know what Solari thinks about Boone. The guy was an animal for Ohio…

79 Jared Valdheer 110 OG Marshall Newhouse 141 CB Akwasi Owusu Ansah 172 OLB O'Brien Schoffield 208 FB Manase Tonga (He and Britt Miller can swap off and one play blocking TE and one FB)

I don't think he is ready, but is that because HE isn't ready, or our last OL coach couldn't help him with footwork.
Maybe Solari can get him ready for NFL.
Also, on the humorous side... We already have two Davis' on the team
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Drew, in the post you said the Niners should go OT in the 2nd and Safety in the 3rd. Can’t those two positions be interchangeable? Like taking a Nate Allen in the 2nd and a Valdheer/Calloway in the 3rd.

I suppose they could. It’s really up the front office and what their board looks like. This first round was my best guess based off of what they’ve done ans said thus far. It could change between interviews and visits and anything could happen in between now and April 22nd.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
JPP
Drew, No Jason Pierre-Paul in the first round? Most I’ve seen have him in the top 20 and the combine didn’t do anything but solidify that to my knowledge.
Haden will most likely run a better time @ the pro day and I think he stays in as a first rounder. Florida has a quick track so I think he’ll run mid 4.4’s.
Good call on JPP, I could see him maybe being replaced with Derrick Morgan or Carlos Dunlap.
I am thinking that Haden may not get drafted in the 1st after how poorly he did. If he does, he could be swapped out with either Wislon or Robinson. But I think the combine hurt his stock severely. It was not just his 40-time, he screwed up nearly every single competition. Him running on a track will just make it seem like he is cheating his true numbers (which is basically what he’s doing; not gonna play football on a track).
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
More likely Dunlap before Morgan though.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Combine vs Tape
It’s the classic debate in regards to combine vs game tape. Give me the guy with good tape (Haden) and a rough combine outing over the combine freak (Bruce Campbell) with skeptical game film.
Joe Haden no doubt cost himself some serious $$ at the combine, but that doesn’t take away what he did against some of the best receivers in the SEC (Jones, Green, LaFell). At the end of the day, that’s what matters. I can’t be mad if we take him at 13 or 17. Guy is a winner, plays hard, and has a good background. Sing will be able to get the most out of him.
What he did was sit on routes
The Gators had a great pass rush and just squatted on all the underneath stuff. He did nothing to prove that he could be stuck on an island with a great receiver and hold his own.
You can't fault him
For playing on a team with a good front 7. If he was as pedestrian as you make him sound, teams would have keyed in on that and taken advantage of it. His game speed is far better than his combine 40 time. He played at a premier program in the SEC and was tested against several NFL prospects throughout the year.
I'm not saying
we should draft the guy. I’m just saying you’ve got to admit he’s a pretty darn good player who deserves to be (and most likely will be) drafted in the top 20.
It’s pretty easy to play CB when the QB is tossing save my life ducks across the middle of the field.
Yes I can fault him. I can tell you there are numerous CB prospects with better physical ability than Haden. His lack of speed can be covered up in college but also could be severely exposed in the Pros. Mike Rumph had a fantastic college career and his slow feet were exposed in the Pros.
I think he still goes in first for sure.
But I have to wonder why he would run the 40 if he knew it would be 4.5 or higher. You can’t tell me when he was training, his agent didn’t advise him to maybe not run.
Yup
Plus he had great safeties backing him up in case he screwed up

I honestly don't think
Haden will drop out of the 1st round. Too much talent and he is quick instead of fast. Also, Wilson and Robinson are not on the same level as Haden. In addition, his start form was supposedly awful and being out of position can definitely cost .1 or more second differentials. And also, I bet that Joe Haden having his father coach him for the 40 had something to do with a slow time.

Haden's Form
Did you hear Deion Sanders almost have a heart attack when he saw Haden set up for his 40?
Disagree
Do you really think better form wouldn’t would take enough time off his 40 to allow you to blink twice as fast as you can?
Its like Bill Simmons talks about, do you really think people can comprehend what a hundredth of a second is? I mean cmon. A second is fast enough, but to cut that into hundreds and try to discuss that increment of time. Form could EASILY cut 2 tenths of a second off his time.
You were seeing .2 of a second adjustments on 40 just in peoples reaction times from hand timing to computer.
Better form never did a thing for my time.
The difference seems paper thin when comparing time intervals but is dramatically revealed when conveyed in the mph (miles per hour) measurement.
Average person is different.
Were you running 4.5 40 times?
Not saying you didn’t have professional coaches, but….that’s what I’m saying. I just find it hard to justify something that pertains to my 40 time and what my HS coach suggests, with what a guy that runs a 4.6 and what his coach states.
Also, Haden COULD be so much worse than your form, it makes a bigger difference in his time than yours.
Are you kidding me? I would take Robinson or Wislon in New York minute before I took Haden.

still has Haden as his #1 corner, as of an hour ago.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d816d2ea9&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true
That doesn’t say too much. Haden before the combine was the only CB graded out to be a 1st round pick. He might still be Mayock’s top corner but he might now be a 2nd round pick.
Mayock has no stock over here, his picks last year stunk.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
I need to check those picks out. You could be right. I don’t recall him praising players last year like he has been doing this year.
I remember he had a stiff one for Harvin but he also broadcasts for the Vikings and it was pretty much set from day one that is who they were going to draft.
Mayock...
was the only guy I read who had Al Davis catering to his stiffy-for-speed, and reaching for Drops Hella Balls (DHB) last year. The 2009 draft played out quite a bit differently then most people expected. I like Mayock over Kiper or that DB McShay.
Haden scares me. No thank you.

I think
Bradford will go 1 and Okung 2. The Rams just signed another DL player after drafting two in the first round the last 2 years. And the Lions will do everything they can to protect their investment in Matthew Stafford.
As for the 9ers I would like to see them get Spiller and a safety (Mays or Thomas) and OL help in the 2nd and third round. If they opt for OL in the first then wait until the 3rd and draft a “pure” returner who will only focus on that. I love Berry and think if he falls below 5 they should consider trading up for him but that is not their MO. I am not nearly as high on the other safeties but I think we are only a playmaker or two away on defense.
Rumor is that they became especially enamored of Okung at the combine
I can see Rams going with Bradford and the Lions Okung and then sliding Backus over to LG
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
I would be, he looks like a very good OT.
I’m still no sold. Can get a good OT almost any draft picking in the Top 10. Teams only get a shot a DT like Suh or McCoy with a Top 5 pick and some years those players aren’t around.
I saw that they were trumpingly enamored with McCoy. Schwartz is defensive coach and he LOVED him some McCoy. He was practically drooling over him when they interviewed him on NFLN. I think if Bradford goes number one (which i don’t think he will) but if he does, I think Suh would fall to the 3rd pick because of how much Schwartz has already pretty much claimed McCoy.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Woah, that is a shocker there. I thought Suh's combine showed a vast superiority.

If I was the Lions GM? Easy, for me, Suh. But I think Shcwartz has his heart set on McCoy from what he’s said. If he went all the way to Vanden Bosch’s house, brought him a bottle of wine and teddy bears for the kids, he’s gonna get his guy. For some reason he favors McCoy over Suh. Who knows maybe it’ll turn out to be genius move. Never know.

I would, I would rather keep my 70 million dollar future upright.

I think the Lions are in a very tough spot
They would love to get their hands on one of those DT’s, but Stafford is the Franchise. Im sure they, just like everyone else over the past few years has seen how unforgiving this league can be to franchise QB’s who play behind bad offensive lines.
They need to protect their investment. Because Stafford is the future of that team.
The lions already had to deal with Stafford getting injured last year and I doubt they want to risk that again. I personally believe Suh is an amazing talent who is the best player this year, but that is rarely how the draft shakes out. On talent alone Crabtree would have been gone before our pick last year so you never know what some teams will do.

couple things
first off i have a feeling the rams are going to take bradford. granted he was injured last season which would make any team apprehensive but what other options do the rams have at QB? im gonna go with none. i really like spiller as our first pick hopefully he falls that far. as for our second pick, id like to use it on a defensive back like a safety before id use it on a linebacker. the safety position is pretty rich this draft and i think we could get a great player to replace our older, depleting saftey corp

Bradford
He did not participate in the Combine, he still needs to be checked out medically, and he still has not even had his pro day. Since his shoulder is not completely healed, he has to have a special one at the beginning of April (red flag). I am a Sooner fan so I am pulling for Brad, but it’s not looking very promising. Before the combine, everyone had Suh going to the Rams. What exactly did Bradford do to warrant all this 1st overall pick? Nothing would be correct if that was your guess.
The Rams will more than likely make a vigorous push for Michael Vick or Josh Johnson and they will also more than likely draft a QB in the 2nd Round. Brett Favre was a 2nd Rounder mind you. Tebow and McCoy should be there for the taking with the 33rd pick overall. If they dont get their QB this year, next years QB class is going to have a lot more depth. So I can see them waiting on that. Suh is a once in a decade type of player that you just dont pass on. Bradford is someone you can pass on.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
If you look at recent acquisitions the Rams made, Feely and a DT(name slips) I would much rather go with Feely than go with the DT, however, they need to address the QB, and I personally would take Pike in the second.
I'm saying that in a calm manner!!............nevermind, GET ERIC BERRY
If I were the rams this is what I'd be weighing on.
Suh and Pike or bradford and whatever DT is there (maybe Price) If its price I think the bradford pick would be warranted, I think he is better than the number 1 overall last year.
If he falls to 7, we'd be better off trading up.

Love the mock, and most of the picks make sense. Well really, only one I have major questions about….and that’s GB picking Cody. I know Pickett is getting up there but aren’t they wanting to transition BJ Raji to NT? I’m thinking you forgot about him?
Yeah, Raji was out of the spotlight enough that he slipped my mind.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
First year for DL is usually a bust...
I think they will give him a couple years to transition in, especially with where he went in draft. If we will give Balmer a couple years, Raji will get it for sure.
NT take an average of 3 years to become starters
I did the research one time to prove a point to someone else
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
!st round Tackles bust too, but we still want to use the picks to draft them.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
well that doesn’t make any sense. once someone is a bust, thats part of who they are permanently. its part of the definition of a bust that they never amount to anything. it also describes a person, not a time period.
Maybe “first year DL usually look like a bust” makes more sense.
by hellaninersfan on Mar 10, 2010 1:52 PM PST up reply actions
Maybe the word "bust" was wrong choice.
What I was saying is, the first year for a lot of DL players in league is non-existant. They don’t have an impact, so the actual year is bust, but not the pick overall. DL just don’t happen to make an impact in rookie year very often.
I love it when people have so much to say. Care to elaborate on that there Poncho, or is that it?
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Well
the mock has Earl Thomas in the top ten, a reach for Charles Brown, Sean Witherspoon, Brandon Spikes, and Eric Norwood. I personally think C.J. Spiller should be drafted at #17 while I also think Bulaga is way too high. If anything Seattle’s taking Bulaga at #14 because Bulaga is a great fit for a zone blocking team since they did that at Iowa. The Packers are going to draft Terrence Cody? Didn’t they just draft B.J. Raji last year? Plus Cody might be going to high there, I’d very much draft Brian Price over Cody. Then you’ve got Eric Norwood who’s the classic tweener. Too small to play DE in the pro’s while he might struggle at LB. Remember Norwood was a converted DE his senior season I believe and though I believe he’s gonna be a poor man’s Dwight Freeney, I’ve never seen a mock put him in the 1st round. Spikes has character issues and he’s not that fast. If Mualuga can drop to the 2nd, I definitely see Spikes falling. Meanwhile Sean Witherspoon leads the ultra weak class of OLB’s (not hybrids) and the consensus is that he falls to 2nd.

Eric Norwood is an OLB
Scott Fujita is gone…they need a replacement. Norwood in the earlier mocks was considered as a first rounder. He had a decent combine and showed some good agility.
I agree with you on Cody and admitted that above in the thread. Other than that everything else is pretty inline.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Eric Norwood
played DE in his first two years then was switched to LB his junior year. There are still some questions about how he will transition to become a LB in the NFL, and even though he might have had a good combine, I don’t think that cemented his status to be a 1st round pick. You agree that Charles Brown goes #14? That’s an incredible reach for a guy who probably won’t even be an immediate starter just because of his size. 285lbs for a tackle? The guy won’t even be able to hold his own in the league during his rookie year. Plus Bruce Campbell and Trent Williams are probably better than him. Earl Thomas is not a top ten safety no matter what anyone tells me. The guy is small for a safety and has questions about run support and how he was protected by his front 7. I can live with Spikes, Witherspoon, and Spiller being drafted where they are.

I have heard that as well.
Gibbs doesn’t need them, because he has been able to do without. You are right though, If the right guy is there in 1st, they will probably grab him. Thing is, why grab one in 1st (with other holes on team), if your OL Coach has consistently had very good success with later round picks.
Well we do know one thing
Gibbs is a great OL coach.
Whether they draft an OT in the 1st or not, they’re likely going to build a very good OL.

No offense, Its a well thought out mock..
But other teams aside, Scott McG has proven over the past couple of drafts that hes a Value guy when it comes to his selections. And Graham is NOT good value at #17. Some mocks have the guy slipping into the 2nd round! Not too mention the fact that the coaches seem to think pretty highly of the 3 pass rushing OLB’s we currently have (i dont, but they do), so a first round pick seems a bit early considering.
Bottom line, They arent going to take Graham at #17 when Williams is still on the board. I know you have a HUGE bias against the guy being a Sooners fan who had to watch Bradford go down on account of him… but its just not gonna happen.
Oh, and Haden not taken in the 1st? Seriously??
Thats not more player bias. Nope… not at all.
I'm pretty sure
almost everyone hates Haden on these boards regardless of what almost every single scout says. Wilson and Robinson aren’t great either.

I find huge value for Wilson and Robinson in the 2nd.

Value is actually pretty straightforward and can even be quantified. just subtract the players position on a big board from the pick where they are selected and you have a very very crude number for the value of that pick.
example, picking the #15 rated prospect at #20 is a value of +5, while picking the #30 rated prospect at #20 is a -10 reach.
obviously there is no rigor in that stat analysis, but value is a fairly concrete concept.
by hellaninersfan on Mar 10, 2010 2:01 PM PST up reply actions
I don't think it is in FO though.
I don’t think they rate prospects as 10th best prospect. They have guys they rate as 1st round prospect, then rank them. If there are 20 players rated in first round, they grab whoever is on top of their board out of the players left that were graded out in 1st.
Hope this makes sense. I understand it in my head, but not coming out well.
Last year McC only have a few people graded out in 2nd round, none were left, and that’s why he traded it for #1 this year. It’s not like he looked and said, oh, we have a guy who is 50th, and we are getting a +5 at 55th pick, so let’s grab him. Either they were at top of board, graded out in 2nd round, or they weren’t.
Haden still goes in first, regardless.
I like Wilson or Robinson in 2nd as well, but doesn’t discount the fact that Haden goes in first.
Thanks for your opinion but I did a bunch of digging, reading, watching the experts and analysts, and research for these picks… it’s not guess work like you maybe seem to think. Polling fans, reading beat writer articles for each team, you can come up with some very credible conclusions of what teams are talking about what and what fits and what doesn’t.
Haden… there is a chance he can fall out of the 1st now. There may only be a couple corners selected in the 1st round which could very well exclude Haden from the 1st. He’s pretty overrated and I think people are starting to see that now. No bias, it’s called reality.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Oh, Im sure you did.
Still doesnt change the fact that Graham is a reach at #17.
2 First round picks… and you use them on a KR/PT, whos going to get maybe 8-12 carries (TOPS) backing up Frank. And an undersized tweener whos just going to get thrown into the mix with Lawson, Brooks, and Haralson?
What a waste of a potentially epic 1st round.
I too think Bradford is going #1.
Suh is the BPA available in my opinion.
But the NFL is a business, and the business decision would be Bradford.
You’re right about Coach Spag i think. I wouldnt put him on the hot seat quite yet… but one more terrible year and hes there. He needs a spark, and he needs it now.
Bradford coming in and adding a ray of hope to the franchise would help him keep his job.
Having a D-line with 3 first round picks and still coming out last in the division wouldnt.
I think Bradford is the pick as well.
And I think it buys him 2 years at least. He has to get enough leash to allow his QB to get on the field. I read somewhere that a new HC who takes over a team, without a Franchise QB ALWAYS grabs one soon after taking the reins.
If you are wondering why everyone changed their #1 pick
its because they all realized that suh could not be the #1 overall pick, it would have to be a quarterback.
1) Spagnulo needs to turn the team around now, because he is on the hot seat. They have new ownership that isn’t committed to spags, and if he doesn’t show improvement next year he may be on the way out.
2) A couple rookie quarterbacks have improved their teams in their first year, and defensive line prospects can take time to develop. Suh has no more gaurantee of immediate results than a quarterback.
3) Defensive tackle is just as risky a position as quarterback to draft. We had a thread here on it. and suh has had 2 knee surgeries.
4) If st. louis picks Suh they will have picked 4 d-lineman in 5 years. That is simply insane.
5) spagnulo is a defensive coach. Defensive coaches do not draft defensive players, look at draft history. If a defensive coach knows he won’t have a starting level qb he will find one in the draft.
6) Spagnulo probably thinks he can pull a decent d-line out of the 3 1st round picks he already has. He’s certainly more confident in his ability to do that than his ability to scheme around not having a franchise quarterback.
7) They tried to trade out of the #1 spot with tampa bay, who they knew would pick Suh. They clearly weren’t interested in Suh. they wanted to save money by picking a qb at 3 rather than 1 since TB and Det both have qbs.
Fortunately, suh will be spending at least the first few years of his career in the NFC North or South.
I agree with Bradford going #1
Suh is the BPA available in my opinion.

Sorry but Bradford won’t be able to do amazing things behind that line. Like I said below, he will be in a worse position than Stafford was taking over the Lions. Spags has a better shot at keeping his job if he beefs up that defense and gets the stats up there. They knew they were highering a defensive minded coach. And personally, I dont think Spags is on the hot seat after one, two years. He will have 3 years to show them a significant difference.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
The thing is, Bradford wouldnt have to do amazing things. The Rams are a run first team. That offense runs through Steven Jackson, not Marc Bulger. Bradford wouldnt have to be anything more then a game manager. Thats if he starts ofcourse, which i dont see happening right away if even this season. They wouldnt throw Bradford into the fire knowing he just came off an injury, and they dont have the o-line to protect him.
Bulger was an accurate QB before that line dominished and evaporated in to free agency. Now not so much. And you think a rookie that has been known for accuaracy as well is going to have anymore success than an accurate veteran? I certainly don’t. He’s going to get crushed behind that weak line. He wont even make it out of preseason. I think it’s a stupid pick so I hope they do it since they’re division rivals. But once again, Bradford’s done nothing up to this point to warrant the pick. I am getting tired of repeating myself though so think what you will.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.

That is not always true. Stafford was put in a similar situation and there weren’t huge milestones there. Bradford may not even be as good as Stafford and is going to a team that is worse off than the Lions were when Stafford took over there. At least he had Calvin Johnson and a so-so journeyman in Northcutt to throw it to. Bradford will have nothing. The Lions even had a better offensive line than the Rams currently do. There is no way Bradford makes a difference there. His shoulder would be nuked again before the first regular season game with that line. By adding Suh, and recently Robbins in the middle and Chris Long on the outside rushing, and possibly even another DE rookie that can make a splash right away, Laurinitas in the middle of the field and Atogwe in the secondary lurking, they’ll at least be able to field a good defense.
I am a Sooners fan but I do not think Bradford would find success with St. Louis. Again, there has been nothing on Bradford’s end to warrant him being taken over Suh. He should have cam out a year ago.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Plus, they can always take Tebow or McCoy in the 2nd Round

Funny you should say that, drw and I had a conversation about Okung to the Lions and he believes they have too much money invested in the OL to draft a Tackle.
Makes sense from both prespectives though. With Little leaving I think they have to draft DE as well, so Bradford is an option, and i wouldn’t rule out Suh and even Clausen, since he doesn’t have shoulder issues.
If he falls to 7, we'd be better off trading up.
1a E Berry, 2a Valdheer, 2b to Saints for Bushrod, 3a. Mike Johnson, 3b DeMaryius Thomas, 4 Owusu-Ansah, 6 Brandon Banks, 7 Jamar Chaney

I looked into those money picks after my comment below and the only have money in long. Carriker signed a 12.8 million dollar deal

Great arguement for why Rams could and probably would take a QB first. I have been saying that for a while, but you explained it perfectly.
You people are naive, I swear. The media is like a little kid at a petting zoo and all of you are the goats eating right out of their hands.

Bradford or Clausen at #1 make a great deal of sense for many reasons, especially since the Rams just picked up Fred Robbins

So I guess that means they will draft a CB?
Thats not a good argument at all

AJ Feeley has never been more than a backup
and you know it. Fred Robbins is a starting DT who is very good. Worlds of difference there, but I guess you’ve mde up your mind.

25 tackles and 2 sacks in a 4-3 is “quality”? Sounds like back up material to me. Spags said they may keep Bulger to start at the combine, did you miss that? They also said they’d consider Vick, which means they WOULD NOT need to get a QB for a good few years.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
Same stats in ’08 and ’07 for the most part when Spags was the defensive Coordinator, so to answer your question, yes they were.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
thanks
wanted to make sure.
sometimes its not about the stats too. you have to think with spags going after him that maybe he thinks he takes up 2 guys freeing up other guys to make those stats.
Fred Robbins
You’re looking at a season when he missed two games and only played part of two others.
2008—36 tackles 5.5 sacks
2007—42 tackles 5.5 sacks
2006—45 tackles 5.5 sacks
2005—he missed most of this year
2004—39 tackeles 5 sacks
When he’s played a full season he’s averaged close to 40 tackles and 5 sacks a season which is pretty good for a DL
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Those numbers aren't superstar numbers
but they’re very solid and good enough to put him in the top 20% of the leagues defensive linemen—even higher if we separate out 4-3 guys from 3-4.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Especially when a guy like Suh can come in and double, maybe even triple that. Warren Sapp got 16.5 sacks in his best year and comparisons are being drawn of Suh to guys like Sapp and R. White, etc.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
Not to mention the fact tha in a 4-3 there is TWO defensive tackles
Robbins signing doesn’t mean anything
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
Rams front four
Leonard Little who is probably signing with someone else. Clifton Ryan who is a very solid starter. Darell Scott who stinks and Chris Long.
They signed Vanden Bosch so he’ll probably replace little. They signed Fred Robbins so he’ll replace Scott and they also picked up Corey Williams in a trade from the Browns and he’s also a very solid DT. I really can’t see them spending a first round pick on a defensive lineman when they’ve got Chris Long on one end who was the #2 pick in 2008 and Vanden Bosch on the other side plus a solid interior.
Are they really going to pick D-line #2 and #1 overall in consecutive years?
Now you are welcome to disagree but don’t be acting like I’m eating out of the media’s hand when I’ve done my research on this.
Throw in the fact that the Rams have 4 guys at the top of their board that they’re looking at and it’s very conceivable they could go somewhere other than Suh or McCoy for their number one pick.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Clifton Ryan a solid starter?
You have low standards. I dont think Spags is satisfied though and that’s all that matters. He is going to try and build a line similar to the one he had when the Giants went to the Superbowl. Everything starts in the tranches and that team is starting from scratch. Think what you will just like you do with Tebow. But I am not budging or conceding on any of your points.
You are eating out of the medias hands. I have done research too. Suh has been the consensus number one all the way up to the combine and all of the sudden just because a few media guys say they think Bradford’s going number one, everybody is jumping on the bandwagon. Well sorry, I see past all the BS….and I DO RESEARCH as well. That is why I am not convinced one bit that they can’t get the same thing from Tebow or McCoy that they would form Bradford with the 33rd overall pick. If They get Vick or Johnson, they may not even draft a QB at all this year.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
If They get Vick or Johnson, they may not even draft a QB at all this year.
If they keep Bulger too that is. Vick or Johnson, Bulger, and Feeley would be enough probably.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
Wouldnt keep Vick and Bulger
It’s one or the other. And yes, they would still draft a QB this year. Vick is hardly long term QB. Dude hasn’t played in 3 years, and when he did last year, looked far from the guy he used to be. They aren’t passing over their Franchise QB for Vick. You are absolutely crazy.
I think that a guy
who’s stats are good enough to put him in the top 20-25% of all players at his position deserves to be mentioned as a solid starter.
You’re welcome to disagree but you’d better have a good definition of what a solid starter is.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
20-25% in what regard? Tackles? Sacks? Looks like an average player to me. Also sounds like that 20-25% is including backups which I dont count.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
Getting away from the point anyway. Whether he is good, bad, average or whatever, he is no Ndamukong Suh.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
and AJ Feeley is no Jimmy Clausen/Sam Bradford. why are they so much more likely to bring in another FA QB than another FA DT? Are Vick or Johnson any safer as choices than bradford? Vick hasn’t started in 4 years, and wasn’t great the last time he started.
How are you so sure that suh will be successful in the NFL? 1st round DTs bust all the time, and he has had 2 knee surgeries.
for the record I never really thought suh was going to the rams.

Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
Same from Tebow and McCoy?
there is no guarantee they both fall, and Pike would a safer bet to slide to #33. Get the same in Tebow coming from you is hilarious since you are trying to prove a point. The reason I think it will be Suh is because Carriker busted, and adding Robbins means he needs a better DT up front. Staying with Bulger is the DUMBET thing they can do, yes even worse than taking a QB number 1 overall. *.5 million dollar hit before the season and he desperately needs a change of scenery, they should be shopping him as we speak to the Bills, Redskins, or anyone that may want to take him. That’s why it could easily be a QB. Who is calling the shots in STL?
Coach Nolan didn’t, based on what you said in another thread, so why does Spags have that luxury, I know you aren’t in that front office.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Actually
Spags said just because they bring in a veteran QB doesn’t mean they won’t draft a QB high in draft.
I doubt anyone in NFL thinks Vick is the future of their franchise. He is a stop gap QB at best.
He could be for a few years. He could add a 5-7 Year stint for a team. It’s really up in the air with him. If he can become a pocket passer, then he has the chance to stick around longer. Steve Young had to settle down when he got a little older too. Not saying Vick is as good as Steve, just saying he could be a “franchise” QB for someone for a half decade or so.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
OH MY GOD!!!
I deleted my whole post again….
It was a long one, with a great point, I gotta go now, so maybe I’ll follow up later.
It discussed how the likelihood of Vick settling into a pocket passer, with suspect accuracy and bad work ethic is slim to none. It discussed how the Rams passing on a chance to draft their future franchise QB due to Vick is crazy. They may not get another chance at their QB of future, and to pass the chance now, when they don’t have anyone in that role, is crazy. We had our chance at #1 and screwed it up. That was our one shot to get the guy we wanted, and now we won’t have another opportunity like that for a long time, without trading away our future picks.
Rams would be crazy to pass on Bradford, because of Vick. I watched Spags interview, and he said bringing in a Vet QB like Vick, wouldn’t stop them from drafting QB #1 if they thought that pick was the future QB. It all depends if they think Bradford is the guy or not, Vick will have nothing to do with it. If they bring him in, they cut Bulger, grab Bradford, and let him sit for a year or two. No problem.
At least you know what you’re getting in Vick. Bradford could be a bust as far as anyone knows

If you are so sure of something that nothing can change your mind, you are probably wrong. If the Rams traded for Vick I would think Suh will be the pick. When the rams brought in a perfectly good DT, it made you more sure they were going to draft suh.

I just don't see Vick being the future
I think any team see Vick as short term answer. If he was the future, some team would have already made a big play for him, but as it is, Eagles can’t even get a 3rd rounder for him.
Not really the lock of the century, Eric Berry will not bust.

And they all had crappy years and good offensive lines to start behind. The Rams have one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. So yeah, go ahead and put any of those QB’s behind that line and they wont make it out of preseason…career over: season ending injury. None of those guys had concerns with two shoulder surgeries before they took a snap in the NFL too mind you.

You do realize that Clausen just had a pretty major foot surgery on his planting foot don't you?
He missed the Combine because of it. Bradford has had significant injuries to his throwing shoulder.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
Bradford won't start his Rookie year.
Spags already said during combine, that added a Vet like Vick, doesn’t mean they won’t grab Bradford. He said he would prefer his QB sit and learn the offense. Plus it gives him another year to let his arm fully heal.
Which leads me to believe they will take a guy in the 2nd round and get a guy like Suh with their 1st.
If he’s not going to start, then why on God’s green earth do you waste a pick like that? Makes ZERO sense. There is a draft next year as far as I know too if things dont go well. I dont think anyone is expecting the Rams to go to the playoffs… including the Rams. Suh is a once in a decade player, there are potentiall “franchise” QB’s in EVERY single draft.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
It shoots a hole in the winning now argument saying the QB is going to sit . . . which happened to be the #1 reason for drafting a QB that started this long chain.
So short sided, both of you.
Just because he sits for a year, as MOST rookie QBs should, doesn’t mean its the wrong pick. I’d gladly pick a guy this year, let him sit for a year or two, if he is our version of Manning for the next 10 years.
Short sighted?
You are the one pushing the blanket statement that a bad team must select a QB with a top draft pick in order to turn the franchise around.
Just gave you two examples where a team selected the defensive stalwart (Sapp, White) and started to immediately turn things around, I even left out Bruce Smith from the list.
The Dolphins selected a LT a few years ago and got the QB later. The Chargers turned their team around selecting Tomlinson than getting Brees later. The Saints just won the SB acquiring their QB (Brees) via free agency. The Raiders became a dominate team bringing in Rich Gannon via free agency. Kurt Warner – Cardinals (free agency), Kurt Warner – Rams (UDFA), Matt Hasselbeck (trade fodder), Matt Schaub (trade) and that isn’t even scratching the surface of examples turning a franchise around without using a top pick on QB.
I think what you are trying to argue though is that DT is
1. a bust-proof position
2. of greater positional value than a quarterback
if you can convince me that either of those things are true I will be impressed.
and yes, good QBs can be found in FA, but so can good DTs. when a QB comes out of nowhere and plays at the level of tony romo everyone takes notice. When a DT comes out of nowhere and plays at that level, no one really cares. Everyone can name all these examples of UDFA or late round qbs who became successful, but can’t name any DTs in the same situation. its not that no DTs have ever been in that situation, its just that its not a glamor position. But here are some examples: Kelly Greg was a 6th round pick, and we got Franklin through free agency.
always make sure the other side can’t use your argument. you can get an good starting defensive tackle without spending a high pick.
by hellaninersfan on Mar 10, 2010 2:46 PM PST up reply actions
Not my argument at all.
I think what you are trying to argue though is that DT is
1. a bust-proof position
2. of greater positional value than a quarterback
My argument is simply there are more ways than one to skin a cat or build a franchise. Pushing the Rams into that pigeon hole called Sam Bradford with an argument that it’s the only available shelter is just false. Teams can win centered around a defensive tackle.
You grab someone with higher positional value to a team.
I just think if the Rams think Bradford is the guy, they will grab him. A ProBowl QB means more to a team than ProBowl DT. So if you have a chance to grab your future PB QB or PB DT you grab the QB. IF they think that Bradford isn’t the guy, they will grab Suh. I just think the Rams are looking long and hard (that’s what she said) at Bradford, more so than people on this board think.
Let's put it this way, if they have Bradford and Suh graded out equally, they take Bradford in a heart beat.
I think if it’s anywhere close, and Bradford checks out healthy. He is the guy. I think if Suh is a 99, and Bradford is a 97, Bradford is the guy, etc….
QB has more influence on a team than any other position, if you have a chance to grab your guy, you do it.
Funny thing about it all, was Bradford was rated higher than the QB taken 1 overall last season.
He was better, IMO, but has the injury, so I can see why he’d be avoidable. Going another year with that OL and QB situation, Suh will not add wins alone, regardless of who they get they will still suck. They are like the 49ers in 05 and I guarantee half of you wanted Leinhart to come out.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
but you can’t plan your franchise expecting to find a hall of fame level player. Suh hasn’t proven anything yet. Warren Sapp and Reggie White were two of the greatest d-linemen ever. you need a hall of fame level d-lineman to turn a team around, but you only really need a starting level qb.
the rams don’t think Suh is guaranteed to be a hall of fame DT, which is why they wanted to trade picks with the bucs.
and I’m not pidgeon holing them into sam bradford. I’m saying, that with no starter on the roster, the rams will draft a quarterback with their 1st round pick. When michael vick is a ram I’ll reconsider, but right now they don’t have a starter at the position. it is a glaring need.

wut?
but you can’t plan your franchise expecting to find a hall of fame level player
That is the plan of every franchise.
The Rams want to trade a pick because they need more good players above one great player. Also, the #1 pick comes with an astronomical price tag and the franchise would like to save some money. It’s got nothing to do with Suh or any other available talent.
ERIC BERRY!!!!
Trade up to get Eric Berry, take jahvid best in the 2nd round to get a game changer that can break a long TD run at any time, and give us an actual threat on special teams. I enjoy your mocks Drew and can’t wait till the real thing.

To all you Spiller fans, it might not happen according to John Clayton
Clayton tells it like it is: "To Bryan in Morgantown, WVa., don’t buy the idea that the 49ers are going to draft running back C.J. Spiller. They are set in the backfield with Frank Gore and Glen Coffee. … "
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
I can't put too much stock into what anyone reports on anything happening in the draft.
It’s a crazy couple of days in those war rooms, and I know that Singletary has said he wants a change of pace back. If the Niners plan on not moving up for Berry, it makes sense that they take Spiller. he provides more production on ability alone and he would make Smith’s life easier and Gore’s, which are two very key components to our season. I wouldn’t expect to see him on punt return duty, i think we’d draft another guy for that, but I can see the Niners taking him, just not at 13, i believe he will fall to 17, unless someone trades up to get him.
If he falls to 7, we'd be better off trading up.

Though he seems to be an explosive back with talent at returning kicks I can’t see the logic on this move, he won’t be an 3 down back and would be highly over priced for a return specialist. 1st round picks are usually starters especially those picked in the first half of the 1st round (1-20). Berry looks like a hell of a football player but I think the browns can use his services as well.
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
Logic? See Chris Johnson.
He alone makes ya think that at #13 he’d be a great add, I am not for drafting him there, but if it happened I wouldn’t be upset.

This could be good news for Spiller in the long run. It does show that despite McC’s “I want big guys” remark, he is willing to make adjustments.

If they sign Washington, there will be no CJ Spiller. We would have to give up a 2nd Rounder AND pay him a fat contract to hope the Jets would not want to match. I think it is a very bad business move if we go there.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
And he’ll be 30 in two years. We would have to sign him to a longer term deal I am sure. Why would you do that when you could get a guy that is 20 or 21? I would rather take concussion plagued Jahvid Best than broken leg, soon to be 30 Leon Washington.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Yes but it is a sway to the other side is my point
Agreed if they sign him that bodes ill. But if they don’t it bodes even better for Spiller. If they are willing to take a look at Washington then they quite well will be willing to take a look at Spiller too. The “I want big guys” argument is weakened immensely

DRAFT
Is the key word. Niners want bigger bodies in draft. I don’t think they would hesitate to grab a smaller player if he has already proven himself at the NFL level. I just don’t think McC wants to spend a high pick on a smaller player. If a guy is going to get guaranteed money, he is either going to be big, or already elite in NFL at his position.
Draft versus FA it's still a player that you want on your team right?
The argument of I won’t take a guy in the draft to play a position of need but I will take a guy in Free Agenc to fill a position of need, seems a bit shallow really. And I’d have a hard time believing that would be accepted by anyone including himself. I guess that’s my point. I understand that you feel otherwise and that’s cool but it seems like very blatant (lacking a better way to phrase it) bastardized logic. Leon Washington by a) his characteristics b) his abilities that the 9ers feel would give value to the organization by simple nature of that proves it wrong. Big doesn’t automatically spell success in the NFL. And by his showing interest in Leon Washington (a guy at least in some ways of smaller stature than Spiller and I would say with less “upside”) he has shown a willingness to “bend his own rules”. I suppose your point is that he will only bend for FA’s.
But that’s just my take on it. :-)
Balanced draft with offensive emphasis. Pick 13 CJ Spiller 17 to Chargers 28 DI/DET Jared Odrick 48 WR Demaryius Thomas 60 S Reshad Jones

I see what you are saying...
….but you have to understand, the percentage of smaller players that have an impact, are few and far between. It is a big man’s game, with a few exceptions in the league. So why spend guaranteed money, and a high draft pick, on a smaller guy who may or may not hold up in NFL, who may or may not make it. If you want to take a late round flyer on a guy, and hope he makes it, like Sproles when he was drafted for instance, than great, but at #13 with guaranteed money, I think that’s where McC draws the line.
Now has that guy proven he can stay healthy (barring freak accident like LW), has he proven he can produce? Ok, now lets throw some money at him and see what we can get. However, when McC was talking about bigger players, he was talking in context to the draft.
Plus 1, I wouldn't want him for a small contract, especially if we have to give up a 2nd.
If he falls to 7, we'd be better off trading up.

Do you understand the meaning of a change-of-pace back? Or is that not in your realm of thinking? If you have a bigger more prototypical back and have a change-of-pace back as well then it gives the defenses different looks. There is not one team in the NFL that has two C.O.P.‘s and that’s the point. Do you still not get it?
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
dude relax...
i understand the idea of a COP back but it’s too early to pick up spiller if he is not the starter, i can hear your frustration but try to relax, we are allowed to disagree. LOL, are you so enamored with the possibility of taking spiller that any different opinion makes you want to choke anyone who disagrees. The title of my mock draft was, “My mock draft.” you have your thoughts i have mine. Besides is COP back really that high on our list, I personally, don’t think so. Forsett is a bum
Carrol will not make Forsett the sole starter… I see him following the USC’s structure having a stable of running backs to work with
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
LOL… Forsett is a bum? Now I really know you don’t know what you’re tlaking about. 5.4 Yards per carry and 5 TD’s in a very small amount of playing time is not a bum. Other rookies did wayyyyyy worse including our own Glen Coffee. Did you watch any 49ers games this year? He ate our defense’s lunch with catching screen passes out of the back field. He is the same type of player as Spiller. Homerun threat. Thus will not draft Spiller unless they are going to use him as trade bait for another team (i.e. The Chargers or Texans).

Dunlap to the broncos with bradford on the board, Nah. Then williams with our next pick, hell trading up for Berry would have definitely been better than these two. I would see the Ravens going CB instead of NT. Chargers pick is a good one, and the Vikes won’t reach for a CB.

It’s other way around. Snyder should be moving to RG since he can’t handle RT. You don’t ever move a struggling guard to tackle.
When did Ansah all of the sudden become a 1st Rounder?

Interersting thought on moving Chilo to RT, but the problem is, if he is struggling at RG already, RT is a harder position. Usually guys struggling at Tackle, move to Guard, not the other way around.
"Let's move Chilo to RT" Problem solved! NOT!
Aren’t we trying to recover from this failed experiment now? We currently have a guard playing right tackle now and that has been a big problem. Waaaay too early for lupati
But the closer we get to the draft the more i agree with the Spiller nay-sayers.
- is TOO early for a COP back and FR/PR. You have to take into account that hes never going to get more then 10 carries a game when Frank is healthy. AND the Niners have showed that they like Glen Coffee so dont think for a second that COffee is going to vanish once spillers in there.
Too much of an investment for a mere Role-Player.

Wasn’t there a discussion of how Iupati struggled on the right side of the line during the Senior Bowl but excelled at LG.. this was part of my reasoning. Also last year, they started Chilo at RT during preseason but put him inside when he struggled, I think they may have him work at RT again.

I can see your point on the Ravens and I did consider that but they don’t have a back up to Ngoata? since Bannahan’s? departure, and the Vikes need a CB and I suspect teams will start reaching to get a CB in the second round, so they don’t want to miss out on a possible starter
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
My Mock
1 Rams – Sam Bradford QB – They need a QB and they know it
2 Lions – Russell Okung LT – They just traded for a DL. They wont want to invest too much in one position area
3 Bucs – Ndamukong Suh – Buccaneers fans rejoice.
4 Redskins – Jimmy Clausen QB – New GM, New Coach, New QB is coming.
5 Chiefs – Bryan Bulaga – Cheifs draft positional. this is a reach but they will make just like they did with tyson jackson.
6 Seahawks – Gerald McCoy – Seahawks fans rejoice.
7 Browns – Eric Berry – Their secondary is atrocious and this pick just plain makes sense.
8 Raiders – Bruce Campbell – He ran the fastest forty for the O-Line. Al davis has to love him!! lol
9 Bills – Trent Williams
10 Jaguars – Dez Bryant WR – What weapons does garard have?
11 Broncos (CHI) – Dan Williams
12 Dolphins – Jason Pierre Paul
13 49ers – Joe Haden – All the worth wild Tackles are gone and his 40 time slides him right into the niners lap
14 Seahawks (DEN) – Anthony Davis – Spiller will be tempting but they opt to fix their O-Line issues
15 Giants – Derrick Morgan
16 Titans – Brandon Graham
17 49ers (CAR) – CJ Spiller – All the OL prospects worth grabbing are gone. at this point the niners opt to grab Spiller
Niners grab a tackle in round 2. I dont like the fact that there is no tackle but if haden falls in your lap, you cant pass on him which gives seattle the last decent tackle. if seattle opts to grab spiller then davis goes to niners at 17. either way id be happy if it worked out that way
Do not like Joe Haden. He benefited from a super strong front 7
as well as great safety support. He’ll get torched in the legue. I know it’s fun to mock the Raiders but they won’t be taking Campbell in the first. Campbell is at best a 2nd round pick. if they want talent guy they’d go with someone like JPP or Taylor Mays there. No way McCoy doesn’t get picked by the Chiefs if he’s there.

last year everyone said the cheifs would take aaron curry if he feel to them at 3. look what happened. Im just saying that about them passing on mccoy.
you are probably right about haden
I dont know my college ball all that well. Im just mocking up something u dont normally see.
last year
aaron curry was mocked to go to the cheifs at #3 and there is no way they would pass on him. welcome tyson jackson. im not saying they wont.. but they just spent top 3 money on a DL. do it again?
McCoy being at NT would make Jackson play better
So i can see the reasoning in it.
true
but will pioli invest that much money in two guys on the dline when he needs to protect his $60 million QB? if cassell fails, pioli fails.
Also very true.
But McCoy’s value at #5 would be far greater then Baluga’s… i think it would come down to how the Chiefs FO approaches their draft selections.
If it was the 49ers there, and Scott McG is choosing, then he picks McCoy because hes proven time, and time again that hes a Value over Need type of guy.
Lucky for them though, either pick would greatly benefit the team overall at two critical positions.
cheifs place positional value before all else.

You seem to be totally ignoring the fact that he was the BEST defensive back on the BEST defense in the nation. He didnt just benefit from a good defense, he ADDED to a good defense.
Easier to be the best of 2 CBs on a team
thn the best CB in college ball which is what people have him as.

College teams typically carry 4-5 CB's.
Before the draft, most people unanimously had this guy as the top CB overall. He hurt his stock at the draft, yes… But the fact that he Stood out on such a good defense throughout the college season, should say alot about him.
Do i see him being a top 3 CB in the NFL? no.
But i also dont see him being a weak spot on any NFL defense. The guys going to be a solid player that improves the defense overall.
I like this mock.
Dont agree with ALL of it, but i like the 49ers picks.
But i think i’d rather have Earl Thomas then Joe Haden. I dont know… id really have to weight the options there.
Spiller at #17 is awsome. #13 is too early, imo.
its not perfect
but its not what you see from everyone else. I tried this last year and used a combo from the media drafts and it failed miserably. it went way haywire. trying to do something different. Spiller might not make it to 17 but if he does i think they definitely have to snatch him up.
I like Myron Rolle in another round for Safety in a later round. He’s definitely a mike singletary type of guy.
Rolle = O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D…. and overhyped….and did I mention slow in all forms of the definition

I will join you on Xmas and sing that with ya.

You think Rolle is overrated as a 5th round prospect?
Does that mean you think he should be undrafted?
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
I don't want him either
I’d rather grab a better guy in 3rd. If we hold off on taking a safety earlier, to grab Rolle, I’d be pissed. If nobody falls into our lap, and we take him, ok, let’s give it a shot. But I’d rather someone else in 3rd-4th.
No
It means I dont think he’ll be a good NFL player and will be out pretty fast.
Crowded elevators smell different to midgets.
OK, but isn't that kind of what you expect with the picks from 5th-7th?
I’ve always considered them to be project players that may or may not pan out but you’re willing to grab on the off chance that they work out.
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone put Rolle higher than 4th round and most have him going in the 5th round.
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Overrated as a potential starter because he is smart and has a lovely story.

I would package Haden and Spiller to the Browns for Berry and their 2 and 3

The Browns have 11 picks in this draft. Not sure if they will trade with us but I can gaurantee that they will be making trades here and there throughout the draft in possibly multiple rounds

if berry is available at #7
and we had gotten bushrod with our 2nd rounder or got the gaither tender down to a 2nd rounder and got the leon washington tender down to a 3rd rounder…
#13, #17, and next years 3rd to the browns for this years #7, their 2nd, and their 3rd
SUPER BOWL
DREAM DRAFT:
1a. Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
1b. CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
2. Best CB available
3. Freddie Barnes, WR, Bowling Green

If they have 11 picks with their holes on defense, why wouldn't they move two picks to have two first rounders.
You are basically trading Berry for Haden and a D Williams. Those players aren’t what we need but the browns would be better off with that deal.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
so are you agreeing with me?
even if we KNOW that seattle will take him at 6, when we get to the chiefs at 5
we could offer them our #13, #17, and next years 2nd for their 1, 2 and 3 this year
of course, this is only likely if we for sure get an OT in free agency and maybe even trade for a COP back

1a. Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
1b. CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
2. Best CB available
3. Freddie Barnes, WR, Bowling Green

Yeah, I guess, I also agree about Berry to the Seahawks at 6.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
but with our front office
you know we won’t do anything
bushrod, leon washington/sproles… we may not even try for a COP
but this would be a great thing to have happen if it did… we get a decent OT, get eric berry AND move up 8 places in the 2nd and get a 3rd back
BRILLIANT

My Version of the Draft
Here’s my version of the draft as of 3/10. Let me know what you think guys.
1 Rams – Sam Bradford – Let’s be real, as much as I like Suh, no one spends that kind of money on a DT, although if they pick up Derek Anderson, they could take him.
2 Lions – Ndamukong Suh – They’ll take the best DT available and have one of the better D lines in the league.
3 Bucs – Gerald McCoy – Bucs take the best DL still on the board.
4 Redskins – Russell Okung – Just don’t see a QB worth taking here now that Bradford’s off the board. I think Shanahan fixes the line this year and goes after Jake Locker next year.
5 Chiefs – Eric Berry – One of the top 3 players on the board drops into KC’s lap here. He may turn out to be rookie of the year.
6 Seahawks – Jimmy Clausen – I don’t care what people say about him being cocky. You have to be that way as a QB and in Pete Carrol’s offense, he’ll be a star…in a few years that is.
7 Browns – Joe Haden – The Browns have plenty of needs but they team this guy with Wright and their defensive backfield is set for many years.
8 Raiders – Bruce Campbell – The Raiders take a position of need but go with the workout wonder rather than a more polished player like Bulaga or Trent Williams, but this is Al Davis we’re talking about.
9 Bills – Brian Bulaga – With Bradford and Clausen off the board Buffalo has to go offensive line and Bulaga is the best tackle on the board.
10 Jaguars – Derrick Morgan – Could go a number of ways here but Jack Del Rio is a defensive coach and will go with a defensive lineman here. Pierre-Paul could also be an option.
11 Broncos (CHI) – Dez Bryant – Assuming they trade Brandon Marshall, receiver becomes their number 1 priority.
12 Dolphins – Dan Williams – With Ferguson suspended the first 8 games, the Dolphins need a dominant DT to occupy the middle and Williams is just the man.
13 49ers – Trent Williams – The 49ers are an offensive line away from being a very good team. They’re defense is fairly dominant and they have excellent skill players but the line needs help and Trent Williams gives them an immediate fixture at RT. Teaming him up with Staley gives them two bookend tackles for years to come. I could also see them going with Spiller here and picking Iupati with #17. Seems like Singletary’s kind of guy…
14 Seahawks (DEN) – C.J. Spiller – Do you really think Pete Carroll will let this guy get past him at this pick? I think this will be Denver’s pick after the Seahawks take Marshall of their hands, but for now we’ll go with Spiller.
15 Giants – Rolando McClain – The Giants need help at LB and McClain gives them a very good one to build around.
16 Titans – Jaso Pierre-Paul – They need DL help bad and they’re hoping that JPP is the next coming of the Freak. Either way he fills a big need for the Titans.
17 49ers (CAR) – Taylor Mays – It hurts me to put his name here and not Earl Thomas, but Singletary likes big, punishing hitters and that’s exactly what Mays is. He’s taken a beating for his cover skills but I heard he had a great meeting with the Niners brass and they really could use a safety in the mold of Ronnie Lott.
18 Steelers – Mike Iupati – They need O-line help and Iupati brings that and a mean streak to Pittsburgh. A perfect marriage for these two.
19 Falcons – Brandon Graham – After picking up Duanta Robinson they address the DL with this pick.
20 Texans – Earl Thomas – The Texans get two wins with this pick, getting a local guy and filling a need in their defensive backfield with the departure of the aforementioned Robinson.
21 Bengals – Golden Tate – I think they’ll sign TO in the next few days but they still need a slot guy to catch the ball underneath and turn a 5 yard catch into a 30 yard one. Tate is that man.
22 Patriots – Brandon Spikes – The Pats could also go D-line here but I don’t see them letting Spikes get past them if he’s available.
23 Packers – Anthony Davis – The Packers could use some D line help as well but getting Davis here is just too good to pass up.
24 Eagles – Sean Witherspoon – I also think Brian Price is a strong possibility here but the Eagles need LB help bad and Witherspoon will be a great backer in Philly.
25 Ravens – Arrelious Benn- They just got Boldin from AZ but one receiver doesn’t fix it all, especially if they lose Mason. Benn is a big receiver who can get open across the middle and win jump balls in the endzone, similar to a former running mate of Boldin.
26 Cardinals – Sergio Kindle – With all the 1st round offensive linemen off the board the Card’s pick up the successor to Karlos Dansby.
27 Cowboys – Brian Price – The Cowboys could use another quaility DL, especially if they lose Marcus Spears. Price is a beast who gets into the backfield more often than not and will make life easier on D Ware.
28 Chargers – Ryan Mathews – The Chargers need an every down running back and this guy can definitely carry the load.
29 Jets – Everson Griffin – Vernon Gholsten has been a huge bust and the Jets may give up on him before the season starts so they’ll need someone to slip right in. That’s where Mr. Griffin comes in.
30 Vikings – Kyle Wilson – There aren’t too many needs for this team but an upgrade at corner or nickel would be high on their list. He’ll be a good one.
31 Colts – Jared Odrick – The Colts need DL help bad and this guy really adds depth to their line. Gary Brackett will like this pick after resigning long-term in Indy.
32 Saints – Maurkice Pouncey- Not too many needs for the Super Bowl champs but o-line depth is always good and this guy can play C and both guard positions. The rich get richer.
I think the Niners will address their return man needs in the 2nd or 3rd round with a Mardy Gilyard type player. They’ll get a pass rusher in one of those rounds as well. This draft is too deep to reach
Why Bradford?
Clausen and Suh are the only 2 1st overall picks that make any sense. Bradford by the time of the draft, would have not thrown a football in over a half year(That is if he doesn’t throw at his Pro-Day, but until he throws a football, Bradford 1st overall makes no sense.)
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 6. Jake Sharp 7.Preston Parker
Reply fail to RayRay39
1.Brandon Graham 1.Charles Brown 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.John Jerry 6.Mike Kafka 6. Jake Sharp 7.Preston Parker
It makes sense to me
Had Bradford declared last year, he would have been the No.1 Overall pick.
Based on talent, he’s worth the No.1 overall pick.
The shoulder injuries are a concern, but if a team feels he can overcome that, he’s a No.1 pick guy again.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

13 &17
Everyone can fill in the names but consider a couple of possibilities; Draft best OL available and trade out of 17 for aother 2nd and 3rd or Trade 13 and 2nd to move up as high as possible( top 7 but hopefully higher.) At the very least they need to draft a OL and defense and more defense. Remember 49ers will not have a 13 & 17 in the first round for the long time. This draft will define the next 3-5yrs and they had better get it right.
McShay offers up some interesting info on receivers
3. Wide receiver/tight end — Rather than being top-heavy, this year’s crop of pass-catchers lacks elite talent but boasts depth into the fourth round. WR Dez Bryant is the only pass-catcher worthy of a top-20 grade, but others who crack the top 50 include TEs Jermaine Gresham and Rob Gronkowski and WRs Arrelious Benn, Demaryius Thomas and Golden Tate, and TE Dennis Pitta is coming on strong and getting to the fringe of the top 50.
And teams that address more pressing needs in the first two or three rounds will also be able to plug holes and find contributors if they do their homework on the receivers. WR Taylor Price is a vertical threat and a third-round value pick, while fellow wideouts David Reed (size, separation) and Emmanuel Sanders (explosive slot receiver) also fit in the same area. The fourth round also offers up some sleepers in Andre Roberts (tough, polished) and Seyi Ajirotutu.
As for tight ends, Anthony McCoy has slipped because of character and work ethic concerns but would be an absolute steal in the third round. Aaron Hernandez is also dealing with off-field baggage but would be a solid H-back value in the third, and Dorin Dickerson is a third-round H-back/receiver hybrid who could play a versatile role in the NFL. Finally, Ed Dickson is a limited blocker who may need time to absorb an offense but could contribute as a sub-package, pass-catching H-back, while Andrew Quarless is one of the three most athletically gifted tight ends in the class but grades out in the fourth or fifth round because of character concerns.
