Arnaz Battle signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers; Rams sign DT Fred Robbins
I don't think that there was much doubt that Battle would find a home elsewhere after losing his starting job with the 49ers. He had a meeting scheduled with the Seahawks but that was placed on hold once they started pursuing Brandon Marshall. Jason LaCanfora is reporting that Battle has agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Battle has spent his entire career with the 49ers.
He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2003 draft. He was only a full-time starter for two seasons (2006 and 2007) and in those two seasons he put up 686 and 600 yards respectively. He has also been notorious on special teams. He's basically been a #2 WR his entire career and will probably have the same role in Pittsburgh. The Steelers Special Teams coach is Al Everest who was most recently with the 49ers, so I suspect we'll be seeing Battle in a ST role with the Steelers
In other news the St. Louis Rams have signed DT Fred Robbins to a 3 year deal worth a maximum of $12 million. Robbins has been with the Giants for the last six seasons. Previously he was with the Vikings for four seasons. In his career he's averaged 35-40 tackles per season with 4-5 sacks per season. Does this signing mean that the Rams choose to pass on Ndamukong Suh?

Could go either way
The Rams’ pass rush was so bad this season that they could be Robbins as a fairly inexpensive insurance policy while preparing Suh or McCoy to be the main guy. But the same holds for the signing of AJ Feeley too. It’s a tough call. Either way it looks like the Rams are looking two seasons ahead.
Yup
AJ Feeley isn’t the long term answer for them. He’s a stopgap at best. Robbins still has some tread left on his tires and might be good for another 5 years if the Rams choose to extend him.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.
On Battle
I’m glad he landed somewhere. I think in his own quiet way he was appreciated here, otherwise he would not have lasted seven seasons with us.
Right up until last season when he forgot that you're supposed to CATCH the ball after it's punted.
They call their best player "Kung Fu Panda" and they complain that people aren’t taking them or the game seriously enough? -Nick
I always liked him
thought he did a really solid job as a #2, #3 WR and on ST. Like mikev said it wasn’t until he forgot how to play ST that he started getting hate
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.
I was always a Battle fan as well. He was a good soldier for us for a long time. I hope he does well in Pittsburgh. I guess best case scenario for him there is that he follows Cedrick Wilson to a Super Bowl ring.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

correction...
you said:

i direct you towards this comment of mine, dated prior to any of battle’s lapses in ST acumen. he’s been a roster liability for years.

I said he was a good soldier, Danny. And nothing you say can take that away.

i wasn't replying to you...
but nevertheless, nothing i say can take anything away from anyone, unless what i say is, “give me your lunch money.” or perhaps, “put the money in the bag!” then, and only then, could my words take something away from someone.
just saying…

Yeah, well I wasn’t replying to you either. Now aren’t you confused???
Also, my lunch money is on its way. I know you wanted it by today, but I got stuck in the whole paycheck processing on business days snafu with the bank. Anyway… I’m sure you understand….

At one point, he was our most reliable WR, I can't remember the season, but he was not a total liability, he also make a couple 3rd down plays for the 49ers.
he was not a returnman. Al Everst wanted him on his ST squad, I am glad he was fired.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
clearly...
he lasted 7 years with the niners because he had naked pictures of terry donahue, then mike nolan, and then scot mccloughan….not because he actually merited a roster spot.

Great read, I especially like the intro. I would suggest maybe Clausen as an option vs okung.
I think with them drafting Jason Smith, they will be very reluctant to draft and sign Okung.
If Goldson wants to be paid more than Rolle, offer him up in the deal for E Berry please.
4 things...
1) aside from the 5 super bowls this is the greatest day in niner history. never thought i’d live to see that headline.
2) any guesses on the over/under for how long it takes battle to obtain naked pictures of the steelers’ front office and coaching staff?
3) related to #2, over/under for how long battle stays with the steelers past his usefulness?
which brings me to…
4) smiley, nice write up, but (my emphasis added)…
I don’t think that there was much doubt that Battle would find a home elsewhere after losing his starting job with the 49ers.
starting job? you mean the one he last had 3 years ago? battle’s stranglehold on alternate reality is unparalleled. he even got you!

He was a starting #2, #3 guy for a long time
even if he didn’t show up on the game day stats as a starter.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will probably get picked in the first round.
show up on the gameday stats?
so what you’re saying is that he was a WR on the 49ers roster for a long time, but didn’t show up in the box score? that’s an argument in his defense? i’d say you’re making my argument for me. what was he doing all those years as #1, #2, and #3 WR when he was supposed to be, you know, catching the ball and running with it? should i give him extra consideration because he kept in tip-top shape by running his routes hard on game day for multiple millions of dollars? should i say, “hey arnaz, nice job riding the pine for the past 2 seasons. you sure were an asset to the team.” i mean, c’mon.
it’s one thing to nit pick about stats when WR A has 1000 yds and 8 TDs vs WR B, who has 800 yards and 10 TDs. but when a guy averages only 25 receiving yards per game (!!!), yet somehow manages to be a top 3 WR on the depth chart for 7 seasons with the same team, we’re not talking about a statistical judgment call. we’re talking about an employee who made about $15 million over 7 years for doing pretty much nothing at the position for which he was hired. i wish i could find a job like that.

We’re also talking about a team that failed for several years to improve or try to improve on a player who it should have been absolutely clear to them was providing them with minimal value.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

yes...
yes we are talking about such a team. subtle points are awesome.
p.s. your lunch money better be here by friday…or else.

Thanks Arnaz
for all you gave to this team. No, you weren’t a top-notch receiver, but for a few years you played hard, made a bunch of catches, and did your job. You never complained, and you did whatever the team asked of you. Good luck!

Thanks Arnaz
for increasing the likelihood that we’ll be in line for comp picks next year!
That is all.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
seriously, I did like the guy, but it was pretty tough to forgive the punt returning punt muffing he did this year.

to Battle with the Steelers, but with the emergence of Mike Wallace last year, he’ll be a Special teamer and possibly fourth WR. That means little to no playing time.
As for the Robbins signing, I don’t think it means they’ve given up on Suh. Spags went and got himself a reliable player who knows the system since Carriker hasn’t lived up to his billing. Now that there’s rumors that Bradford might not throw at his pro day, I think there’s still gonna be thoughts of Suh in their draft room.
He's going to end up somewhere that doesn't have a QB again
when Roethlesberger ends up in the state pen with his buddy Burress. Haha

Man Roethlisberger is really starting to look like a grade-A sleaze. Of course, there isn’t really a way for us to know if any of the allegations are true, but he’s clearly smelling less like a rose with every disgusting allegation that comes out. Between those and the Fathead commercials, it’s pretty hard to like the guy.

LOL… yep. If he’s guilty, I hope he get’s a heafty sentence. But as we saw with O.J. money talks and non-sense walks.

He'll walk away from this one easy.

Not of the actual alleged rape. It supposedly took place in the bathroom. It could have been a mutual thing at first but then maybe things got out of control after that. The lawyers will twist it if that’s the case and I think that’s what lott was getting at.

I hate to see Anaz Battle go
I still think he’s clutch— even though he might be a little short on talent.

Ok I'll ask
What did he do that made him clutch?? He was here for seven years, I wouldn’t necessarily doubt he came through in a play or two. But clutch?

Anaz has made some crucial plays over the years
I remember them… you don’t

No that's why I asked
But I’ll take your word for it. Maybe I just need to go to youtube to refresh my memory!
there were a few years there
where it seemed to me like he made a bunch of 3rd down conversions – he always seemed to be the guy to get open for an 8 yard catch on 3rd and 7. Certainly nothing spectacular but it was better than Morgan getting 6 every 3rd and 7
