First Two Picks - Seahawks

I was just reading this article over at Yahoo Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AkqlxxF0DqneHfIORSoGg79DubYF?slug=ap-seahawks-brownstrade&prov=ap&type=lgns) and I was wondering its impact of the Seahawks first pick.  Hasselbeck is the starter in Seattle, but when he has gone down with injuries the past two years Wallace was a serviceable backup.  Now with Wallace out of the picture, I believe there 3rd QB is Mike Teel, who could be an NFL QB if given the time to develope.  (I am a Rutgers fan.)

Does this mean that the Seahawks have to draft a QB with there number 6 pick?  Drew K predicts in his most recent mock draft that the Hawks are going to take Clausen.  But the Seahawks have shown interesting in Tebow.  Could they go best player available at 6 and take Tebow with 16?  What does everyone think?  Are the Seahawks going to target a QB with one of their first two picks or should they hope to get one in the second round?

Either way, I am just glad the other NFC West teams are messing up free agency just as bad at the 49ers are.

I think they absolutely have to target a quarterback in this draft. Hasselbeck’s health is an annual question mark, and they’ve neglected bringing in a young option for years because of the security that Seneca Wallace affords them. I think trading Wallace is a very cut and dry message from Pete Carrol and Co. that they are taking a top-rated quarterback in this draft no questions asked.

I think they probably have Clausen at the very top of their draft board, and that their interest in Tebow has to do with the possibility that Clausen isn’t available. If Clausen slips away from them with that first round pick, things could get very interesting with the draft (and the NFC West) very fast.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

I agree

from what i’ve heard and read on Tebow is that the Seahawks and Bills have asked Tebow to workout for them. So if the Bills don’t take Tebow in the second round Seattle will, I don’t think they take a QB in the first round if Clausen or Bradford are gone

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

by bayboy on Mar 9, 2010 11:23 AM PST up reply actions

They could conceivably draft Clausen and Tebow assuming that Tebow falls to their second round pick. I dont think I have ever seen a team draft QB’s in back to back rounds so it’s more than likely they’ll get one in free agency and one in the draft. I am thinking they will go with Delhomme, Bulger, or Anderson…possibly even a guy on a much lower pay scale like McCown in FA and Clausen at 6.

So it would look like this potentially on their depth chart:
1- Hasselbeck (to start the season)
2- Clausen
3- Free agent signing.

I don't understand the logic of taking a FA veteran and keeping Hasselbeck and then draft Clausen at the 6th overall pick.

They will take Berry at 6, if they feel Tebow is who they want to draft.

Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.

FA signing

cheap, good backup in case Hasselbeck gets hurt early and your rookie isn’t ready go go. When your rookie is ready go go then the FA signing will be a good backup for you.

I would suspect that if Hasselbeck gets injured/sucks and the rookie isn’t ready yet that their season can’t be saved with a free agent vetern QB. Might as well start your rokkie and let him take some reps in a real game.

I would replace No.3 on your list with Teel

He doesn’t really have a connection with Carroll, but I don’t see any guy out there that Carroll might want.
Who were you thinking about?
Anderson?

Should have drafted Sanchez last season, instead they choose Currysworth.

by bignerd on Mar 9, 2010 11:22 AM PST reply actions

I don't get why so many people are so high on Sanchez

The Jets have the NFL’s best defense and one of the best running attacks, yet they spent the second half of the season trying to create a game plan that would limit what Sanchez has to do so he wouldn’t blow the game for them. Although Curry was kind of a bust for how high he was taken so they might have been better off with Sanchez.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

by urnext on Mar 9, 2010 3:44 PM PST up reply actions

Sanchez has done a few things right

I don’t really think he’s a good QB now but he has all the tools (tangible and intangible) he needs to be a great NFL QB.

Examples include:
Good accuracy
Strong enough arm
Great footwork for such an inexperienced QB

Of course, his decision making needs work, but maybe experience can help him with that?

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

I think that there are very few rookie QBs

who display good decision making skills. It’s a vastly different game than in college.

He came into an ideal situation last year

He played on a team with a great defense and great running game. I’m not saying that he won’t turn into a great QB, I just don’t get why everyone is so convinced that he will. I think he’s just as likely to be an average QB as he is to become a great one. I didn’t see anything last year that makes me believe he’s a sure thing.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

by urnext on Mar 10, 2010 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

It depends on how you look at it

You see him as a guy that struggled on a great team.
I saw a guy that played extremely well in some situations and ridiculously poor in others.

Inconsistency is the key, he has shown he can be great at times…now he just has to try to be great more often than not.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Mar 11, 2010 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

Lets see

He won the starting job outright in camp.
He managed to hold onto the starting job for the entire season.
He played well in the playoffs.

Not a lot of rookie QBs can manage to pull that feat off. Alex Smith couldn’t even beat out Tim Rattay his rookie season.

I wasn’t big on Sanchez initially when the draft talk started last season but I became quickly convinced he would become a franchise QB. I thought he had an impressive rookie campaign.

by bignerd on Mar 9, 2010 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

Eh

The thing that most impresses me about Sanchez is his footwork.
He can move in the pocket VERY effectively.

by SportsChicken on Mar 9, 2010 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, and (to bring it back on topic) this is why I think the 'Hawks will target Clausen

Clausen played in the kind of pro-style offense that Sanchez did, taking drops, making multiple reads, handing off from under center, running play-action, etc. This will make him a much more pro-ready player than Bradford, and even with the ‘personality’ concerns he’s the guy they have to target.

Jason Hill is turning the corner!

by grantmp on Mar 10, 2010 7:42 AM PST up reply actions

"personality" concerns

I am so sick of people saying his personality is a concern.
He made one ridiculous comment when he was in HIGH SCHOOL.

Phillip Rivers is much more arrogant than Clausen, that doesn’t stop him from leading the Chargers.

Bringing in a Qb would mean that Mike Teal was a bad pick. Although Carrol and his staff have no game film of him, they should consider him.

What is funny is if they draft tebow they will have two project QB’s backing up an unhealthy vet, so, I would be happy if they went either way.

If he falls to 7, we'd be better off trading up.
1a E Berry, 2a Robinson (FSU CB), 2b J Valdheer, 3a. Mike Johnson, 3b DeMaryius Thomas, 4 Owusu-Ansah, 6 Brandon Banks, 7 Jamar Chaney

by rlott#42 on Mar 9, 2010 11:35 AM PST reply actions

USC vs Rutgers

I just looked at previous USC games and they never played Rutgers, so Carrol wouldn’t have any first hand knowledge on Teel but I am sure that he saw him play a little via ESPN. But Teel was a late round draft pick from a previous regime, so I am sure he is expendable.

by twolfe2 on Mar 9, 2010 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

Bringing in a Qb would mean that Mike Teal was a bad pick.

Why would Pete Carroll and Co. even care a little bit about some other GMs sixth round pick? Teel wasn’t a part of the plans for the people who drafted him, so picking a quarterback makes absolutely no change to the perception of that pick.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

No need to cut him now

I assume they’ll let him prove his worth in camp and if they don’t feel he’s worth keeping around, they’ll cut him.

He doesn’t get the veteran courtesy of being released so he can find a job.

hopefully for them a quarterback makes it past pick 4. Hopefully for us they think Tebow can be an NFL qb. he is after all, a proven winner.

by hellaninersfan on Mar 9, 2010 12:39 PM PST reply actions

Pete Carrol knows the value of a top tier QB.

Hes going to take Bradford or Clausen depending on whos there.

If anything, Its kind of a given now that Wallace is gone.

I say he takes Tebow, if he knew the value of a top tier QB, he wouldn't waste his time interviewing Tebow, right?

It seems ridiculous now but wait until Bradford and Clausen are off the board after 4 picks with several teams still needing a QB.

Josh Freeman was a projected 3rd round pick and Tampa jumped him at #17. Even worse the next few teams would have picked Freeman.

by bignerd on Mar 9, 2010 11:00 PM PST up reply actions

Both Buffalo and Seattle have private workouts scheduled with Tebow

why would you schedule a private workout with a guy that you’re thinking of drafting in the 2nd?

The only reason to schedule a private workout with a player is if you’re considering picking him in the 1st.

Well, for the sake of playing Devil’s advocate, I’d say the potential press coverage doesn’t hurt them. Pete Carroll is a media darling, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was just drumming up a story to make the Seahawks more relevant come draft day. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were seriously considering Tebow either, though it does seem like a stretch to imagine that anybody would want to draft him in the first round (at least, right now… his Pro Day could conceivably change everything).

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Mar 10, 2010 9:52 AM PST up reply actions

Tebow is a big wildcard in this draft, a team has nothing to lose, and a lot to gain by showing interest in him.

There is no way Jacksonville can justify taking him with their first round pick, but there is a lot of speculation that they need him bad to help sell tickets. If Seattle doesn’t take a QB in the first and he’s sitting there at #40, it might be possible to work a trade for his draft rights. Jacksonville doesn’t have a 2nd round pick this year, so I can only pray we can do what we (and you) did last year and trade that pick for a 1st next year. Then we might have a real shot at getting Locker next year, which is the QB all of us in Seattle want (he’d be our Tebow, only good).
