Niners On NFL Live
So I'm watching ESPN and NFL Live, A Nice little segment comes on about our San Francisco 49ers.
Herm Edwards Proposed a trade for BOTH Donavan McNabb And Brandon Marshell.
I Myself have thought about the possibilities but never really said much. With Herm bringing it up it proposed that we would trade our 2nd round pick for Donavan McNabb And one of our 1st rounders for Brandon Marshall and draft a tackle with our other 1st round pick. Just thinking that our offense would be super legit.
QB: McNabb
WR: Marshall, Crabtree
TE: VD
RB: Gore
Add that offense with our already pretty nice defense and they said it on NFL Live, We have a legitimate chance at another superbowl. They said the only problem could be contracts at the end of the year. Resiging VD, Mcnabb and what not. They also pointed out that if we got our new stadium we could have more money to spend.
Any thoughts?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Cut the guy some slack...
I saw the Dungy piece this morning and was about to create a fan post up myself but he beat me to it. LOL This is actually a pretty intriguing scenario. If McNabb would be willing to sign an extension and Marshall could get his act together off the field I’d be all for it. The only thing is that this feels like a short-term solution to keep us competitive for a couple of years as opposed to planning for the future.
See Fooch's comment below
When there are as many other threads on McNabb as there is, there’s no reason to post another one. The only reason it’s still up is because there were too many comments to delete it. Had he caught it sooner, it would have been moved to another existing post.
Intriguing as it is, it’s not likely to happen, as Adam Schefter alluded to. He reported on more than one occasion that the 49ers are NOT going to persue McNabb. Marshall may be an option, but I think the Yorks are content with what we have… as they should be.

Not that I’m for grabbing McNabb or Marshall, but content they should not be considering this wasn’t a playoff team in 2009. Although I suspect you meant content with the plan that is better in the long-term…but still…I won’t be content until we have at least 7 Super Bowls and are unquestionably the best franchise in the NFL.

question
Are the Texans your AFC team? I’m just curious because I always thought you were a Texans fan.

I always thought he was the Texans Defensive Coordinator

Born and raised a Niners fan…but watching the Texans be born, it was hard not to root for the team as well (especially when they were an AFC team). So I root for both (because it rarely conflicts…and doubles the hate for Dallas). I just found BRB before NinersNation, so thus the name reflected that.

thanks for the clarification
I was a little confused, but that makes sense.

I do sort of the same thing in basball i was born and raised in san francisco and still love
the giants but start likeing the yankes about the same-time the giants got saebean one is a NL tam the other is a AL team
Yea brah
I saw the show also. The way Herm made it sound it would be a good deal…but the thing I’m concerned about is the contract and money issues it will bring. Not only that we got Davis and Willis that we will have to try to re-sign coming up. Those two contracts and McNabb and Marshall is gonna be a hell of a lotta money to kick out. To tell u the truth I’m 50/50 on it because it has it’s good and bad points. Can u imagine an offense with McNabb, Gore, Davis, Crabtree and Marshall with the defense we already have plus using the remaining first round pick to get a quality RT? Holy S___!!! That’s the good. The bad is the cost and trust me it will cost.

I have my ........
reservation’s about the team’s ability too sign two # 1 pick’s and the player’s whom contract’s are up and coming let alone brining on two high price player’s too boot ………that’s why i wouldn’t mind trading back one of the first two pick’s ………
Kewl
NO.
I don’t want an over the hill, over-rated quarterback or a wide reciever who’s a liability off the field. I also dislike giving up ANY draft picks for either of them
I miss Joe Montana/Steve Young/Jeff Garcia

i feel it
that brandon marshall trade looks enticing, but giving up a 1st rounder? hellz no.

Alex Smith is garbage...
I think I’d give up a future 2nd or 3rd for him, but the cost of his new contract is going to be prohibitive.
If God had intended us not to rosterbate, he would've made our arms shorter.

I'm starting to lean towards no
because i like how our young team is coming along. That price is just too much to pay. I believe we should just keep our picks and develop thru the draft and continue to developing our talent.

I just noticed this post. Since there have been several comments in it already, I’ll leave it up. Something like this is better reserved as a FanShot or in an existing McNabb post unless the writer can provide a lot more detail on the Marshall end of it.
I agree this should be a fanshot, but I for one like the fact that new information is posted on new threads. It certainly helps keep posts on topic and eliminates the need to go through old posts for new information.
Also, more thread = more hits = more $$$ = khakis = chicks
Science.

This is very true…well, everything except the khakis part. That kind of threw me off. Khakis get chicks? I was not aware of this aspect of the science.

That's just a plus of the SDSU education system.
Douglas “Swish” Reemer: We win, and they get the chicks. That sucks, dude.
Joseph R. Cooper: I’m telling you, it’s jobs. We gotta get jobs. Then we get the khakis. Then we get the chicks.
I can’t believe Basketball was made 12 friggin years ago…yeesh I feel old.

We're better off trading our #2 for Gaither
I think 1st rounder for Marshall and 2nd rounder for McNabb is not enough
I did not vote because I am not sure, but I think it will take more than those picks at the level that we have them to get those players.
Marshall is only like 26 years old and has had 3 seasons in a row with 100+ receptions. Marshall is worth much more than a mid round 1st round pick, which could be 50-50 if the drafted player becomes anything.
But I think I am content with A.Smith over McNabb if it costs draft picks to improve to McNabb for a short term solution.
Marshall would be excellent but I don’t mind watching our other receiving weapons develop with Crabtree and Vernon
Brandon Marshall
This truly should be a no-brainer for the Niners. They need another premier WR and Brandon Marshall is better than every WR on the draft board.
The likely options at #13/17 are not all that exciting aside from Spiller.
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....
plus
bm is better than any wide receiver we currently have. crabs isn’t on bm’s level yet

Alex Smith is garbage...
My gut says No for both
Reason 1. Brandon Marshall is undeniably a talented receiver and one of the tops in the league. However, talented players, per se, don’t automatically translate to positive results. Yes, the likelihood he contributes is w/o contention, but to what degree will he contribute (beyond that of our alternative receivers, be them Morgan, Hill, whomever) and will that contribution be worth a first round tender. Given our other needs (OL, Secondary, Returner), our 1st rd picks are better served filling those needs, rather than supplementing our already strong receiving core.
Reason 2. A lot has been made of this being McNabb’s last year under contract and a lot of teams being apprehensive to trade for him w/o first securing an extension. A lot has also been made of Alex Smith’s first year of cohesion in O-coordinators. I draw two conclusions from these two issues. 1; McNabb may very well go to a team who is unable to extend him (ie, Raiders) upon trading, and he may go into 2011 as an unrestricted free agent. 2; If that is the case, and if Smith doesn’t meet expectations, we can cut bait with Smith (as was already the plan, a lot has been said how this is his last chance to prove himself), and potentially throw money at McNabb in the 2010-2011 offseason. Even if we don’t land him, we will also have contingencies of Nate Davis (possibly being ready) and David Carr (who knows).
Reason 3. $$$ and resigning our current players we wish to keep, VD and Willis being the two most glaring players. Should the hypothetical of landing both Marshall and McNabb, there would be too many talented players demanding too much money to realistically believe we could retain them. Personally, I don’t want to be a flassh in the pan/ one and done team (C’mon people, we are the forty [site decorum] niners). We are on the verge of great things to come for many (emphasize many) years to come.
Reason 4; alluded to in reason one, we have other pressing needs to address, either through free agency or the draft, and QB and WR aren’t either of them. Beyond OL, secondary and the return game, I would put another RB, depth on DL and depth at LB all ahead of either QB or WR as far as needs go.
Reason 5; influenced by the probable inability to extend certain players’ contracts and maintaining a good on the field product are implications on the possibility the 9ers can get a new stadium deal in Santa Clara. The stadium and move to Santa Clara is a hot button issue among 9er fans, but my attitude has always been that if we can get a new stadium, be it in Santa Clara or at the stick, we make that a priority. I live in SF, and my preference would be for them to stay at in HP, but not at the cost of continuing to play at Candlestick. Should the 9ers proposed stadium plans to Santa Clara voters, many may vote on the pretext of bringing in a winner, not a loser that just recently didn’t resign all its key pieces which made them great.
Of course a counter argument can be made that those players brought in (McNabb and Marshall) made the team great, and there would be a franchise QB in McNabb. But do not forget that McNabb may be a franchise QB now, but surely will not be by the time any stadium move would occur.
In summation, we should not listen to Herm ‘no longer employed as a head football coach because he wasn’t very good at coaching’ Edwards. Do remember people, there are certain TV talking heads simply because they were not good enough or made bad decisions, hence why they are no longer “being talked about” and are noe “talking about others.” Alex Smith may not be the answer. McNabb may improve us in the short term, and Marshall may be (no, he is) a stud WR. But these are not the pieces we, as a team, need right now.
I say we stand pat, if anything trade picks for other picks, address our other needs, and maintain a long term perspective towards success.
Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!
would be nice to have BM's talent
but yea I also think the amount of money we would need to spend on him relative to the results we can already get from our other WR’s, should refrain us from getting Marshall because of the difference in how much money we’ll spend on Morgan, etc., for now.
Please....
He doesn’t know enough about the Niners to make a crazy comment like that. Sure… it sounds great and if had he mention that about any other team, it would sound great too. And to boot, they were campaining for a GM Job for him ? Please…….
Ummmm
We are talking about Herm “We play to win the game” Edwards right? If Matt Millen agreed that we should do this then I say the Niners do the exact opposite, whatever that is. I really don’t understand how coaches and GMs who flame out suddenly become experts on TV and everyone believes what they say. There is a reason they are no longer with an NFL club. This doesn’t apply to all of them, Jimmie Johnson for example. But personally I would not follow any of Herm’s suggestions unless they were quite obvious.
