My Draft Series, Final Part: 2010 Version!!

Nfl_draft_2_medium

via assets.sbnation.com

My previous posts regarding the NFL draft have focused on a historical analysis of 49ers drafts. I covered steals of the draft as well as amazing busts. This time i am going to take the same analytical course, but focus on the 2010 draft in particular. I will focus on different draft day scenarios, certain players i know the 49ers are looking at, players most likely to go to the 49ers in each round and of course give you my ultimate and final "mock draft".

It is important to keep in mind that i predicted the 49ers to draft Glen Coffee, Nate Davis and Curtis Taylor last season.

13th Pick: RB- CJ Spiller, QB- Jimmy Clausen, CB- Joe Haden, DE- Derek Morgan and LB- Rolando Mcclain

I bet you find it funny that i do not have one single offensive tackle in this group! One simple reason for that, none of the top prospects will fall to the 49ers as i envision Washington, Seattle, Kansas City, Oakland and Buffalo going offensive line in the top 10. So this leaves Spiller, Haden and Morgan at need positions and Clausen and Mcclain at the best play available section. Many people have talked about Jimmy Clausen and the fact that the 49ers will not pass up on him if available, but it is obvious this isn't a position of need and if Clausen were to fall to 13 or 17 the 49ers may be in a great position to get value for that pick in terms of a trade. Teams in the bottom of the 1st round like Minnesota and Arizona need to address their QB situation while other teams in the top of the 2nd round such as Buffalo and Cleveland will need to as well. I honestly believe that if we are left with these options with the 13th pick it may make a whole lot of sense to trade down to the end of the 1st round and pick up multiple picks from Minnesota, who is in desperate need of a QB of the future. This may force them to give up their 1st three picks in the 2010 draft, that would be a load to receive for Clausen. There is an obvious drop off from Bradford and Clausen to the likes of Mccoy and Tebow.

17th Pick: S- Earl Thomas, DE- Brandon Graham, G- Mike Iupati, DE- Carlos Dunlap, S- Taylor Mays, CB- Kyle Wilson and OT- Charles Brown

I see many more options here. I would be incredibly happy with Graham, Iupati or Wilson here and by the looks of it they will all be available at 17. The 49ers are going to get need and value with the 17th pick. Brandon Graham would add that pass rushing threat opposite Justin Smith and make Lawson, Haralson and Brooks that much better. Mike Iupati is as sure as they come in regards to offensive linemen, it just so happens he plays a position that teams really don't value that much, i still don't understand that. Kyle Wilson may be a reach at 17, but is it really worth the risk hoping that Robinson falls to our pick in the 2nd round? Wilson may indeed end up being the best corner in this deep draft calass. I just threw Mays, Dunlap and Brown in there because they play a position of need for the 49ers, but i consider all three to be a reach at 17.

49th Pick: LB- Jerry Hughes, WR- Damian Williams, WR- Damaryious Thomas, S- Nate Allen, LB- Brandon Spikes, T- Roger Saffold and S- Chad Jones

Much of this depends on what the 49ers do in the 1st round, but they do have solid options in the 2nd round. Nate Allen is the best safety prospect not named Eric Berry and i wouldn't even hesitate going there with this pick. I honestly believe that Allen is better than both Earl Thomas and Taylor Mays. If he is there with our 2nd round pick we cannot pass him up. Damaryious Thomas is an absolute wild card here, there is a chance he will be available in the 3rd, but i highly doubt that. If Thomas had returned to Georgia Tech he would have been a top 5 pick in 2011, it is incredibly hard to pass up on that potential. Imagine Crabtree, Davis and Thomas on the 49ers for the next decade, that is pretty darn scary. If Roger Saffold is available i would suggest the 49ers take a hard look at him. In my opinion he will be a better tackle in the NFL than Charles Brown, Trent Williams and Anthony Davis. That is great value.

79th Pick: OT- Jared Valdheer, G- Mike Johnson, G- John Jerry, DE- Koa Misi, RB- Toby Gerhart, S- Myron Rolle, CB- Brandon Ghee and WR- Jacoby Ford

This is where the depth of the 2010 draft class comes into play. All these players would have at least been 2nd round picks in the 2009 draft, and you can get them with your 4th selection in the 2010 draft. Regardless, of whether or not we are planning on signing Chester Pitts the 49ers still must look to the future and go for either Mike Johnson or John Jerry here, i really don't think that is even in question. I can almost guarantee, that if available on of those two players goes to the 49ers with this pick, unless of course we draft Iupati at 17. I also like Misi and Ford a lot, so that could be an option as could Toby Gerhart.

113th Pick: DE- Kevin Basped, RB- Anthony Dixon, CB- Javier Arenas, S- TJ Ward, CB- Jerome Murphy, LB- Thaddeus Gibson, CB- Perrish Cox and DE- Greg Hardy

Again, depth depth depth. Great value here, no matter who the 49ers select. But i would say that minus us taking a DE in the 1st three rounds, the 49ers would have to go for Kevin Basped. The Nevada standout has been dominant in college, all be it, against lower than top tier competition. But the upside he possesses is amazing, especially in the 4th round. I could easily see him turning out to be another Jared Allen. That said he has had injury problems, and this is why he dropped to the 4th round. Javier Arenas may be too small to be a top tier corner in the NFL, but if Singletary is telling the truth about wanting more than one return man, he could be the answer. Arenas will be a solid NFL CB, but an electric special teams player as well, the same goes for Perrish Cox who actually may have more upside in terms of the corner position than Arenas.

145h Pick: CB- Walter Thurmond, WR- Andre Roberts, RB- LaGarrette Blount, LB- Reggie Carter, DE- Jermaine Cunningham, TE- Colin Peek and T- Tony Washington

Now this is where you start to notice a considerable drop off in terms of talent. Thurmond has the most upside, while Colin Peek would provide the most immediate impact as a short down blocker that can also receive in the red zone. I am intrigued by both Blount and Carter, but they have had their fare share of off the field issues.

182nd Pick: WR- Jeremy Williams, CB- Donovan Warren, G/C- John Estes, S- Kurt Coleman and G- Brandon Carter

A lot of options here in the 6th round, but if available, no matter if the 49ers select a corner earlier they must go after Donovan Warren. Just two months ago he was rivaling Joe Haden as the top corner in the draft and now is being projected to drop to the 6th round. We must go with value, upside and ability here no matter what we may need. If Warren is not available Williams and Carter would be the next best options

206th Pick: QB- Ryan Perriloux, CB- Walter McFadden, CB- Trevard Lindley, DE- Justin Cole, RB- Chris Brown and DE- Brandon Sharpe

It is really a crap shoot here, but i would have to say the 49ers should go with Perriloux, if available. He has tremendous upside and it really isn't risking much as this is a compensatory pick and he could be hidden on our practice squad for a year or two. Justin Cole could also provide depth at the pass rushing OLB position.

224th pick: K- Leigh Tiffin, LB- Cameron Sheffield, FB- Rashawn Jackson, OT- Sam Young, DE- CJ Wilson and DE- Rahim Alem

You are looking for good practice squad players and depth here, with the occasional "diamond in the rough". Joe Nedney will not be around forever and his range isn't all too great. Could the 49ers find a replacement here? I also like Cameron Sheffield; i don't know what it is, but i have seen his tapes and for some reason he looks like an NFL player. Sam Young was a projected 3rd round pick a month ago, but since something has happened. That said we already have a project in Alex Boone and don't need another one

Trade Scenario: Jimmy Clausen falls to 17th pick, the 49ers trade his rights to the Vikings for 1st, 2nd and 3rd round selections. I understand that this really doesn't work on the trade value chart, but sometimes you have to throw that out. If Clausen falls to 17, i see no reason why the Vikings wouldn't ante up to get him ahead of Arizona. That said i am not going to deal with trade scenarios in my final mock draft!!!

So Here Goes

1. RB- CJ Spiller                                                          Clemson

1. CB- Kyle Wilson                                                       Boise State

2. FS- Nate Allen                                                          South Florida

3. G- Mike Johnson                                                     Alabama

4. DE- Kevin Basped                                                  Nevada

5. TE- Colin Peek                                                        Alabama

6. CB- Donovan Warren                                            Michigan

6. QB- Ryan Perriloux                                                Jacksonville State

7. LB- Cameron Sheffield                                         Troy

No, i don't have the 49ers selecting a tackle in the 2010 draft, but that will obviously change if one of the top tackles fall to them, i also don't see Roger Saffold falling past Indianapolis in the end of the 1st round. If Anthony Davis, Brian Bulaga or Bruce Campbell are available at 17, the 49ers would have to make a decision then. If not, you really cannot reach for a player in the NFL Draft and Barry Sims and/or another veteran free agent may be able to hold up until the 2011 draft when the likes of Gabe Carimi, Nate Solder and Marcus Cannon are available.

i really like the first 3 rounds of your mock draft

i hope spiller gets to us, and i really like wilson at 17, i think he’s the best overall corner in the draft. allen will be solid as well as johnson. I don’t know basped but i do think DE is a need.

i don’t see us grabbing a tight end though, at least not that early, as well as a QB. Smith will be the starter, Carr will be a solid backup, and Nate Davis is our project, i think we’re set there. the other cornerback doesn’t make much sense either, unless if he has a ton of upside, which warren doesn’t appear to quite have. other than that, thanks for all the info!

i don’t think clausen falls to 17, he’ll be off the board by 15 as i think if he’s available for the seachickies second pick they have to take him.

by thewhizkid on Apr 10, 2010 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

We

signed Tony Curtis, so that does mean that the organization is thinking that acquiring a blocking TE is somewhat of a priority, in terms of Peek, he can also add another short yardage goal line dimension. Basped would have been a 1st round pick if he had decided to return for his senior season and didn’t have injury issues, in the 4th round you are willing to take that risk of injury. I

Also i am against taking a QB in the 2010 draft, but Perriloux is a bit of a wild card, he has major talent and major upside. He plays the QB position so in order for another team to sign him off our practice squad they would have to put him on their active roster and THAT ISNT GOING TO HAPPEN!!. So we get a quality player in the 6th that can at they very least give us value in the next couple years when he matures, no one can really question Perriloux’s talent, it’s his character i worry about.

Donovan Warren was projected to be a top 15 pick just a month or so ago, getting him in the 6th round means that we can actually acquire a highly talented player without worrying about spending an early pick on it. Warren may end up bombing out, but most 6th rounders do, the fact that he was just recently projected to be a top 15 pick means we get upside

since the draft is so deap at OL we can get one in the later rounds. i went with 2 CB in the first and a safety in the 2 nd round………LOTT, WRIGHT AND WILLIAMSON??? this is the best senerio for the defense and give us a young group that can gel together. so here is goes:
1. Spiller. Wilson
1. Robinson, Iupati
49. Nate Allen
79, Jerry or Johnson or Shipley
113 Valdeheer or Gerhart
145 Arenas
186 Cole
206 Sam Young
224 Reggie Carter

by slammin on Apr 10, 2010 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

I seriously doubt..

that Veldheer makes it to pick 113. And I wouldn’t choose Gerhart, our need is a COP back, and he’s for sure not one. A draft with the top 3 picks of Spiller, Wilson (or McCourty or Robinson), and Nate Allen I wouldn’t be unhappy with at all. Then maybe go for Jerry at 79 and looking around we could get Wang or Calloway at the 113 or 145 spot.

Here’s some guys I think will be “sleeper/value” picks at their pick points.
OT Ed Wang – probably 4th rounder maybe 5th rounder. Will probably be a good RT prospect. Worst case will be a good guard.
OG Marshall Newhouse – probably 5th rounder – probably a good prospect at guard
WR David Gettis
WR Freddie Barnes – he’s slow and only ok as far as height but the boy just seems to have “it”
WR Chris McGaha – just seems to get the ball.
WR Stephen Williams – tough good jumper and tall.
RB Deji Karim – I think he will be a good COP Back.

I hate your 13th picks. I’d take four of the guys listed in your 17th pick. If I had to choose between your options at #13 than it would be easily CJ Spiller. Clausen pick paints a huge cloud over the 2010 season and Derek Morgan would be nice but he’s not a 3-4 defensive player.

by bignerd on Apr 10, 2010 10:21 PM PDT reply actions

Morgan

absolutely right. He would be a 1-down player in our defense unless he bulks way up. Don’t see him playing OLB (besides, I think we have 3 pretty decent ones now) and he’s too small to play 3-4 DE.

I don't think the Vikings will move up to get Clausen

I just can’t see him in Minnesota at all, though if they do want to move up they need to give us their 1st, 2nd and next year’s 2nd.

I can’t help but think that if the top tackle prospects are gone in the first (which they probably will be) we’ll have to go tackle in the 2nd round. I don’t think we’d take a safety over a tackle and I don’t think we’d take a CB over a safety. I think it would look more like this.

1a. Spiller
1b. Earl Thomas
2. Roger Saffold

The rest of the draft I can see falling the way you project

I think that the Colts will go interior line at 31

They need a new guard and are switching to bigger offensive linemen. If Pouncey is still there at 31 I think it’s a lock that the Colts get him. If Pouncey isn’t there I can see them grabbing a safety.

Pouncey to Denver @ 11!

I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice.

by Typecast on Apr 11, 2010 12:21 AM PDT up reply actions

what if

the Colts call the 49ers about the 17th pick when Iupati is on the board. Indy offers the 31st pick, the 63rd pick and a 2011 3rd rounder. Would you be comfortable with the 49ers taking Saffold at 31, even if Pouncey is on the board?

It’s 3:30AM, I got home a few hours ago from a house that was like a movie theatre/hotel/awesome. You’ll have to excuse me if I’m tossing lob balls up in the air.

I think if I were in the Niners Brass, I’d pull the trigger on the trade with Indy, and the Saffold selection at 31. The team might be able to land Cam Thomas with the 49th (irony) pick, and that would leave a wide open board come 63, like maybe a McCluster reach (if Spiller isn’t taken at 13), or perhaps Ducasse.

Either way, it’d be nice if Indy called asking about the 17th pick to take Iupati.

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 11, 2010 12:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd take it if Indy called wanting to move up

heck, Pittsburgh and Green Bay both need interior guys badly and might be looking at Iupati. Houston too.

Taylor Mays may still be available at 17 as well

Earl Thomas is generally assumed to be the #2 safety right behind Eric Berry, with Taylor Mays #3. I think that either Thomas or Mays will be available at 17 and I think that the 49ers would grab one of them at 17.

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Apr 10, 2010 11:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Hoping that

Saffold falls to us at 49 seems more and more like the hope that Berry falls to us at 13. It would be great, but a lot of stars would have to align for Singletary, Baalke and co. for that to go down.

by InTimmyWeTrust on Apr 11, 2010 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I know

A lot of people are predicting the Dolphins to take Jason Pierre-Paul type, but I really think Earl Thomas will be playing in Miami next season. They really don’t have a safety, and JPP has such a high bust factor, that the financial investment should be made in a better proven player, not a higher ceiling player.

In other words, you can scratch Eric Berry and Earl Thomas off of your boards come 13, because they won’t be around. There was a rumour swirling around that Mike Singletary loves Taylor Mays. I personally don’t think he’s BPA at 17, and a guy like Major Wright or Myron Rolle can be had later on in the draft (rounds 3-5) anyway.

I would be in love with Kyle Wilson at 17. However, I would also be concerned. Most successful defensive players are held back from returning punts/kicks to prevent injury. It’s [site decorum] I know, but it happens. For some reason, offensive players don’t hold that high of ranking. Will Kyle Wilson be a productive NFL corner? Or will he be a better return specialist? I’m not sold on either, and I don’t he’s BPA at 17 either.

Taking Mike Johnson in Round 3 is not that great either. Jon Asomaoh might be around in the 3rd, or even be worth the second round selection. Plus John Jerry too – I’d take either guy over Johnson, and one of them would be there in round 3.

Kevin Basped is a reach in the 4th. If the team is going to take a college DE and convert him to a 3-4 OLB, Brandon Sharpe might be around in 5 or 6, and that’s where Basped should be too.

CJ Spiller at 13 I can live with, because Percy Harvin was such a hit in Minnesota last year. If Spiller is taken at 13, I don’t think Wilson should be taken at 17 (aside from the fact that I don’t think he’s BPA). I think if Spiller is the pick at 13, the draft will be playing right into the 49ers draft board.

Just thought I’d throw in some of my pennies.

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 11, 2010 12:08 AM PDT reply actions

Asamoah won’t be there in the 3rd. He might not even be there at #49 for us. I agree with you about the Dolphins and JPP. I think they take either a safety or a LB (they won’t take Dez Bryant—you can bank on that).

I think Kyle Wilson is the best corner in this draft. I think he’ll have a much better career than Joe Haden will, that’s for sure. Jerry will be there in the 3rd, maybe 4th. Koa Misi is a great OLB prospect from Utah but he’s climbing draft charts. I’ve seen people rank him anywhere from the 2nd to late 3rd, early 4th.

I was shocked when I read this...I thought for sure he would be there at #49

While I still think he will be there at 49, I agree with you, he definitely won’t be available in 3rd round. He is 2nd rated Guard prospect and can play both sides. I think it depends on where Pouncey goes. If Pouncey goes in first round, then yes Asamoah will be top of 2nd.

I like your trade with the Vikings

I would try something a little different though, maybe like packaging Glenn Coffey and #17, for their #1, 2, and 3rd, and a 3rd rounder next year, that is “IF” Clausen is available, and “IF” they wanted to deal. They need a backup RB with Chester Taylor leaving, and Coffee would be much better behind their O line than ours. If that trade happened ( which I would love), we could take Gerhart with a 2nd rounder, and really upgrade the position without having three backs with the same running style. We could still take Jahvid Best , or another COP back, without position overload.
What do you think?

by mensa on Apr 11, 2010 5:22 PM PDT reply actions

I Am Not Sure But

It looks like the Rams are going to release Atogwe later this off-season and i truly believe the 49ers will go after him, so i see them taking a chance and actually avoiding the safety position in the draft. If the Atogwe thing does not come through then the 49ers can live with Michael Lewis for one season.

So i am changing my mock a little bit to fit what i just said!

Replace Nate Allen with Damaryious Thomas… and replace Donovan Warren with Kyle Mccarthy

1. CJ Spiller
1. Kyle Wilson
2. Damaryious Thomas
3. Mike Johnson
4. Kevin Basped
5. Colin Peek
6. Kyle Mccarthy
6.Ryan Perriloux
7. Cameron Sheffield

This of course if dependent on the 49ers interest in Atogwe… we will get a better idea if they expect to acquire him after the draft plays out

by David Fucillo on Apr 11, 2010 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

that

would be awesome. Why the Rams haven’t just given him a contract is beyond me. Am I imagining how good he is?

I’m not saying the 49ers should hammer on the brakes and stop everything to get him if he’s released, but they should at least throw their name in the hat.

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 11, 2010 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Rams and Atogwe can't agree on a long term deal

and they can’t franchise him because they did that last year and if they do it again they’ll have to pay him close to $8 million a year. That’s why they tendered him at the lowest option so they can retain the right of first refusal without having to give him a 10% pay raise over last year.

It seems that most teams are taking a wait and see approach, knowing that the Rams have to come to some sort of deal by June or cut him loose.

Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010

by smileyman on Apr 11, 2010 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

The Rams should look at Antrel Rolle’s ridiculous contract and hand it over to OJ, he deserves it, not Antrel. The team that gets Atogwe a pretty damn good starting FS.

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 12, 2010 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions

That would mean the 49ers would have to avoid him.

We do have to sign Goldson as well, this is the same reason why trading up for berry made the least amount of sense. What team has ever fielded the two highest paid safeties in the game?

I want the best player in the draft.

by rlott#42 on Apr 12, 2010 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

The thing is

I don’t think Atogwe will get a Rolle type deal. Otherwise, I think a team would’ve tried to sign him to an offer sheet knowing the Rams wouldn’t want to pay Rolle money.

Nice Article

I liked your article, except for just a smidge at the end.

i also don’t see Roger Saffold falling past Indianapolis in the end of the 1st round. If Anthony Davis, Brian Bulaga or Bruce Campbell are available at 17, the 49ers would have to make a decision then.

I personally see the Colts grabbing Pouncey, but if he is gone, which mocks have been showing him, I think you are right in them grabbing Saffold.

What I have an issue with is, if Bulaga or Davis are available at THIRTEEN they have to grab one. No way we wait until 17 if Bulaga or Davis are on table. I don’t even think those guys will be there after 10.

if Bulaga is there at 13

he MUST be taken. He can even help Chilo. Dude is super strong and still pretty athletic.

because after the top 3 OT's

there is a big drop-off. Saffold is probably the only guy after Okung/Williams/Bulaga that I would feel good spending a 1st or 2nd rounder on.

Plus, Bulaga is strong, not as quick as the other guys, and may actually be better suited at RT but should be a darn good one and right away. Calloway is a decent RT for the round he’ll be picked in…but he’s not Bulaga.

The explanation behind my sig

1.Brandon Graham – Best pass rushing skill set in the draft. But can he convert to 3-4 OLB?

1.Charles Brown – I believe Brown is the 2nd best OT in the draft. He’ll have to play LT though which would force Staley to RT.

2. Syd Thompson – Small and it seems like this entire offseason he has been injuried whether it be his groin or hammy. While he was at Cal though he didn’t have these durability issues, which makes me think it’s a one time misfortune. Out of the entire draft, I’d say he has the best ball-in-the-air skills. He’s a risk taker and I don’t believe he’ll ever have the potential to be a shut down corner or a reliable #1 CB though.

3.Torell Troup – Man dropped a good 30lbs to get ready for the draft. Was impressive at Senior Bowl practices according to scouts. And the pick just makes sense. With Franklin in a prove-it year, if he is to underachieve, Troupe can make as the future NT.

4.Robert Johnson – Since I don’t consider Earl Thomas a Safety, I’d have to say that Robert Johnson is the 2nd best safety in the draft.

5.Andrew Quarless – He possesses every tool to become a very successful TE in the NFL. Attitude is the only question mark.

6.Mike Kafka – Gamer, high football IQ, accurate, underrated arm, mobile, has the height and weight of the ideal QB.

6.Chris Scott – Big guy. Maybe makes the team. Will probably be riding the pine for a while. I’m just attracted to his tangibles.

7.Preston Parker – New chapter in Preston’s life. He has really matured in the passed couple of years after being kicked off the FSU team. He has great change of direction ability. Always fights for extra yardage. A return man and 5th string WR most likely.

REALLY liking Kafka for us later

Kid is smart (Northwester) and football smart. He stresses making quick decisions and getting the ball out. Played under center and believes you can see just as much (if not more) from there cause you don’t have to watch for the snap like you do in the gun.

Maybe it was just the interviews I heard but he’s gaining popularity even if in my own mind. Said he has no visits past or present which means hopefully he’s available later on.

Kafka Timeline

- Impresses at East-West practices
- Throws GW TD pass
- Was tops for QBs in most combine times
- Only one incomplete pass thrown at his Pro-Day. “Astounds” was the word of one NFL.com blogger
- At he private workout he improved on some of his combine times

He has been steadily rising.

Unfortunately, as of 3 days ago, he met with 4 teams not named the Niners. Instead they were New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders, and Cincinnati Bengals. Kafka seems like a real New England kind of QB too. Won’t be surprised at all if they take him in the 5th.

Mock

FA- target OJ ATOGWE!! this guy has talent and would really help the team.

1a- Dez Bryant- Has some off field problems which is why he falls to 13 but theirs no denying his talent. With sing as the head there should be no problems, and him and Crabtree on opposite sides will be a deadly combination.

1b- Mike Lupati- Plays angry and is a great run blocker. I miss Larry Allen and so does Gore, we need our star running back to have a dominate guard opening up wholes.

2- Jerry Hughes- We could go safety but decide to pick up the pass rusher with a motor. He will make the secondary better and bring not stop pass rush. This guy has a motor, and IMO is going to be a very good pass rushing OLB.

3- Dexter MCcluster- COP back/slot receiver. He would be the home run threat on offense and also return kicks. Our utility man, hand the ball to him, throw to him out of the back field, line him up in the slot, punts, kicks, hes got it all.

4- Brandon Spikes- If he falls this far he would be a steal and could learn behind his cousin. 5.0 40 but there are some very good linebackers that lack speed, and make up for it with instincts. If he’s not there other options (T.J Ward, Syd;Quan Thompson, J. Arenas.

- Last year I saw our defense greatly improve, even with being on the field soooo much. What we need is a wake up call on offense and all the support Alex can get. There are already star players, and stultifying the Oline and adding a couple more play makers will give Alex a ton of targets. We are only a player or two from being a great offense. Another thing that will extremely help is a KR/PR!!!!! we lost games by that alone pathetic last year! Great players in this draft WE BETTER NOT MESS THIS UP.

not sure on Bryant

but like the rest.

Give me Bulaga or a CB there at 13 and I’ll take that mock.

I was thinkin..

Spiller or Bryant, someone who is going to be a big impact on offense. As were getting closer to the draft it seems like Spiller is going to be a top ten pick, and Bryant might fall to us at 13. If we had Bryant, Crabtree, Davis, and Morgan. Our receivers are set for the next decade!

Question

I’ve read somewhere on site that the niners are going to convert to a zone blocking scheme. Is this true?

by mensa on Apr 12, 2010 11:03 AM PDT reply actions

I think Solari

will incorporate some more zone blocking schemes…but I wouldn’t expect anything drastic right away.

We had some semi-zone blocking schemes last year

Our most effective run plays were based on a zone blocking scheme. Like Tre9er says I expect that we’ll see more zone blocking implemented but not an entire shift. Way back when they announced his hiring he mentioned that he wanted to do a mix of stuff during the press conference.

On how much, percentage-wise, he incorporates zone and man blocking techniques:
"Well, what happened this year with Coach [Jim] Mora, we went with the theory that it was going to be -we were going to go with zone blocking, wide zone and tight zone, to answer your question. I guess what I should be saying is, you need a little bit of both, the wide zones, the tight zones, [inaudible], but also you need to be able to run a power scheme, have man blocking and variations. Now, with more teams going to the 3-4 front, you need some variation because the wide zone, what they are doing is taking away the wide zone and you are seeing that from the 34 front teams they are biting those outside linebackers and they are penetrating them up the field where your back can’t press the line of scrimmage and get a good cut off that first step which is very, very important in the wide zones. You need to change up the variations of your blocking scheme and you need to do what the strength of your personnel is with your runner and your offensive line."

and frank gore isn't a wide zone runner

now, if we get Spiller or maybe a McCluster type…then I expect to see some wide zone thrown in, especially on third-and-manageable when the defense is in Nickel.

Anyone have any info on Lonyae Miller?

Does he have any outside run ability? 6’0, 220, 4.43 forty sounds kinda nice. Just wondering people’s appraisal of him.

Looks pretty nice

DraftTek has him at 176, NFL Draft Scout at 158. Hmm we’re at 145 if we could pick up an extra 5 and take him in the 5th that could be hella sweet. Him or Deji Karim are the guys I have my eyes on right now. Deji is more of a standard COP back.

We could trade our 6 and next years 6

to move up to like 155 and take him as a chance.

Pass protection

that’s key. I think I read he can get overpowered blocking. It’s so important and the reason why Sheets was PS’d last year.

On another note, Spiller is a willing pass blocker :-D
