100 in 100: Myron Rolle (96 of 100)
4 MORE DAYS UNTIL THE DAY OF THE DRAFT...
High ambitions, will, fate, and determination are all very accurate words to describe that of a Myron Rolle. Rolle is one of the more interesting prospects coming out in this years draft. Most pundits have accredited high praise of Rolle and had nothing but the kindest of words about the NFL prospect off the field. He definitely seems like a guy who teams won't have to worry about character with.
Rolle has aspired to accomplish careers both in the National Football League as well as in the medical field. He has accomplished so much in such a short amount of time that if football was not an option, he'd be set up just fine. Some of what has knocked Rolle's stock down some was that he decided to postpone playing in the NFL to study at the elite University of Oxford. The year off was surely bitter-sweet for Rolle as he got to do something not many folks get to do by attending the prestigious University but at the same time lost some of the attention he had before deciding to do so. The Florida State safety was not only the fourth student in school history to receive the Rhodes Scholarship, but was the very first Florida State football player to accomplish that feat. It is without doubt that Rolle's intelligence has translated on to the football field and will continue to.
Safeties come in all shapes and forms, and all have different skill-sets. Rolle's strengths have not exactly been of the ball-hawking variety but more on the side of coming up and hitting people right in the mouth. He has been very solid against the run in the three years he played at Florida State. One of the few things Rolle has going for him is his size. He definitely could be characterized as your prototypical strong safety... or at least what you'd hope for in that regard.
Rolle's best year statistically came in his freshman season. ESPN had him ranked as the number one overall prospect coming out of High School and he lived up to expectations through his first season in college. Since then, Rolle has been quite solid but hasn't done much outside of his scholastic accomplishments to set himself apart from his competition at his specific position. This will leave him to be drafted in the later rounds more than likely. However, as many former NFL players will tell you, it's not what where you get drafted, but what you do after you get drafted. Myron Rolle has much void to fill if he wants to leave a permanent mark on the NFL when he decides to leave the game; particularly if he doesn't want the game to leave him first. It's a dog eat dog business figuratively speaking.
Below, as you're used to, I will provide highlights, stats, and my final thoughts on this young talented athlete.
This feed isn't your typical highlight video, but Rolle isn't your typical player. I found this video to be very interesting and I believe that many of you will too. We have been looking at highlights for 96 days straight. It;s always nice to have a change of pace...

SUMMARY AND PROJECTION:
There is a possibility that Rolle could go higher than he is projected to go due to all the national exposure he has received. He has been one of the more highly touted names on all of the cable networks recently. Many of the stations have done special pieces on Rolle because of his scholastic and athletic achievements. This alone has drawn scouts and NFL Teams to look at Rolle under a finer microscope.
Talent wise, Rolle has very good size as I mentioned above. He demonstrated extremely good instinct in coming up and helping in run support. His weaknesses are also a big contributor to why he is not being considered higher. He struggles with one-on-one coverage and sometimes is exploited over the top. He does use his intelligence to put himself in good position to make up for his lack of natural speed though. I am very curious to see how well Myron Rolle does at the next level when he is on the field. He measured at 6'2" and weighed 215 LBS at the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine.
Possibilities -- 5th Round: Picks 132-169, 6th Round: 170-207. Note: There could be one or two teams that consider Rolle in the 4th. Should he be selected there, it may be a bit of a reach.

Hey, yeah, it'd be great if the Niners would take him in the 5th round...
oh wait, never mind.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
I wouldn't want him in the 6th, unless we have already taken a safety.

Regardless of where he goes...
this is the kind of guy I root for to succeed. I’d love to hear about the Rhodes Scholar Pro Bowler who uses his career earnings to open hospitals……it’d be a lot better than alleged rape or illegal possession of a gun etc etc
Football wise, he’ll likely be a special teamer and have to work his way up, but I wouldn’t put it past him. 5th round sounds about right.
"Lord, beer me strength."
He keeps himself in really great shape, which should help him, but he just doesn’t seem to have the instincts he needs to succeed at safety. He gets beat pretty badly in a deep zone, which is what we need him for. It’s unfortunate; I would LOVE to see him succeed as a niner, have him make his millions, and see him take that money and go into healthcare.

He’s a strong safety.
As a result, he isn’t exactly what we’re looking for.

so we already have (in my eyes) a strong safety in dashon goldson, a strong safety in michael lewis, then we would have another SS in myron rolle
i would be scared to have dashon at FS and myron (or michael lewis) at SS to start the season
much rather switch dashon to SS and get either earl thomas, berry, or atogwe at FS
DREAM DRAFT:
1. Get Bushrod or Gaither for a 2nd rounder
2. Trade #13, #17 and our 3rd to Browns for #7, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounders
3. Take Eric Berry #7
4. Iupati or a CB
5. Speedy WR or COP back
6. BPA for the rest

i know… i was referring to many (including myself) wanting to draft a FS like earl thomas or eric berry and then moving dashon to SS
we’ve all seen dashon’s terrible pass defense numbers, and it’s pretty obvious he would a better SS than FS, so drafting myron rolle doesn;t really make much sense because then we have 2 hard hitting (basically) strong safeties and not really a decent FS

If (and that’s a huge IF) we were able to draft Berry, would you keep him at SS and Goldson at FS, or switch the two? Berry played SS in college, so it might not be a terrible idea to keep him there so he wouldn’t have as big of an adjustment at the pro level as a rookie, but it seems to me that Berry has better coverage skills, while Goldson is more of a hitter and a better LOS player. Personally, I would switch their roles, and I think Berry would be able to handle the adjustment, but there are arguments for both sides.

Dashon isn’t terrible against the pass.
He’s actually quite good and he’s an NFL caliber FS.

Goldson’s biggest weakness is the fact that he whiffed on many tackles because he was trying to deliver a big hit.
Our run defense would suffer if he was to play in Michael Lewis’ role.

All players miss tackles, he still notched 94 tackles.
I think he has poor man coverage skills, otherwise we may have made an adjustment when our SS was consistently burnt for 1st downs on 3rd and long.

MIchael Lewis rarely misses tackles
He even managed to “tackle” Chris Johnson to prevent a TD.
Dude, Michael Lewis only gave up that long pass to Owen Daniels.
You have to give me more examples.

I like this kid a ton
hope he does well. I’ve seen tons of mock drafts from various SB Nation sites that have him going to their team in the 4th or 5th, which is about right. He’s one of the guys I’ll be following to see how his career turns out.

Not necessarily going to follow him, but I like him too.

Definitely one of the best stories in all of football
Destined to be the NFL’s “Renaissance Man”. Great mind, great person in the community and oh yeah not a bad player either. Whoever drafts him will be making an investment in his skills because I believe he hasn’t played organized ball in over a season, but I don’t think he’s just a novelty. He should make an impact somehow, even if it’s primarily on special teams. I’m sure a lot of fans will be eagerly following his career.

I like that a player chose education over sports for once. I don’t think it’s a question of desire, but a statement of intelligence. There is life after football for most NFL players, and Rolle got a once in a lifetime opportunity and took it. Now, he gets another once in a lifetime opportunity, a chance to play in the NFL. He wins, regardless of what happens.

I think it gives him a good chance to succeed as Polamalu’s backup.

I'm actually confused by his whole situation.
He should be a Neurosurgeon! I mean its a great story for football, as in football isn’t just a bunch of idiots.
But I’m very serious when I say he should be practicing medicine. Maybe Obama can make a Rolle tax exemption that pays him an estimated NFL salary. I love football and all, but this dude should be using his talents that help out humanity straight forward. I wish him the best, but I just don’t get it.
Not only that, we could use a few good primary care physicians.
What he reminds me of is a quote by Muhammad Ali where he said that boxing was only a means to get his face out to the world so he could do all the humanitarian work he’s done since.
I don’t blame Rolle for wanting to do both. Even a great football career only goes to 35-40. A lot of players have extracurricular activities from the end of the season to training camps…and he’s got that and then decades more to do what he wants in the medical fields…while having the benefit of being that famous athlete – the earned money and the boost that would give him in pursuing donors.
He has a dream…can’t blame the guy for not settling.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Would you want Muhammad Ali operating on you?
I don’t think the plan: playing football for a while, then becoming a neurosurgeon really makes sense.
And how does a boxing and cultural legend equate to what might the “Charlie Ward of Safeties” amongst other equally talented professionals (hardly phenomenons of an entire century)?
I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

Remember John Frank?
I think it made sense for him, why wouldn’t it make sense for Rolle? If you look at their backgrounds, they’re very similar.
It takes 25 yeras to develop an entry level physician
It takes one NFL play to take that away.

+1
Totally agree with you goatfather. I definitely respect him for what he’s able to do, but from my point of view, it seems like he could put his ego aside. He would earn enough money as a neurosurgeon to be comfortable. Why waste the time in the NFL? I mean, what, is he going to play for 6 or 7 years and then go back to school? Will he still be able to operate as well after broken fingers? Can he still learn it all after a few concussions? Some things are more important than sports. But in the end, it’s his life so it’s his choice.
I can only think
some thing might have cost him his passion for surgery
I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

You completely missed the point.
What Ali means there is that he wanted to do “bigger” things – humanitarian efforts – but he knew he could do more if he had a platform – being a world champion boxer would afford him more attention, more money, and make it easier for rich donors to get on board. I was suggesting that perhaps Rolle was in the same vein….become a celeb athlete to do more good down the road.
As someone said above, Rolle can do once in a lifetime things. If he feels he can do both…who is to doubt him? He has a dream, and he’s going for it.
"Lord, beer me strength."
no i didn't miss the point
despite how inventive it was
