OSI? Yes Please

"The Giants will reportedly be willing to shop Osi Umenyiora on draft day if they select Jason Pierre-Paul with the 15th overall pick. Umenyiora "can be had for the right price," according to Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post. Though Umenyiora is coming off a poor season, he is due manageable money over the life of his contract and could probably use a change of scenery. He may also be available for as little as a mid-round pick."
Am I crazy for thinking the niners should go after his immediately? Why would this guy come so cheap now? Im confused. Help me niners fans....

I like Osi but..
he is a couple years removed from surgery on one of his knees. We are going to have to do our homework on that. That’s the reason I believe the Giants are shopping him. On the other hand though the Giants did have to replace Steve Spagnuolo at defensive co. The next defensive co that stepped in(i forgot his name) changed up the scheme so they struggled getting pressure and stopping the pass. Osi came under fire and got alot of critism for lack of pass rush but like i said he was coming off of a knee injury. Towards the end of last season he got benched and was highly upset about it and questioned whether the Giants wanted him anymore after a late season loss last year in front of the media. I think Osi can help us but I don’t know if he is worth a draft pick. He is only 28 yrs old so I believe he can help our pass rush for yrs to come. As far as how we should go about getting him? I dont know.

He is definitely worth a 4th rounder or even a 3rd, and He will probably be a 49er if that is what the team will except.
Unless of cours the 49ers want to avoid the contract. Simply because he is from a 4-3 defense and we are dominantly a 3-4 defense. I think the Lions, Rams, and Titans will be willing ot offer more for his services.

i know you know alot about these schemes, rlott
do you think if we got him for a 4th, he would replace sopoaga at LE, move to OLB, what?
DREAM DRAFT:
1. Gaither for our 2nd rounder
2. Trade #13 and #17 to Browns for #7, 2nd rounder, and 4th rounders
3. Take Eric Berry #7
4. Dexter McCluster 2nd round
5. BPA!

at 260 pounds, I don’t think Osi has the frame for a 3-4 DE. A team like the Lions would be much better off plugging Osi in their 4-3 system at DE. That’s my two cents on the subject, even though you requested rlott’s opinion.

I would have to agree, due ot his size he would have to be converted to an OLB, which means laerning a new system
and new style of play. While he would fill a need as a 3rd down pass rusher, he would not fit our base scheme and would not be worth the .contract

Yea i really cant see him making the transition to a 3-4 OLB
I do respect the guy as a player, but he wouldnt fit the program defensively over here. The Bears if anything should go after him.
I suspect that the Giants will want more than a 3rd for him
OTOH trade market for players has dropped considerably

Well cuse7284....
It seems to me the Giants have been trying to get rid of Umenyiora for some time since the end of their Super Bowl run. For whatever reason, Osi has been on the Giants bad side. I can recall at least 2 times watching ESPN, and they were saying that Osi and the Giants were having trouble. Even to the short lived statement that Osi claimed he would retire if the Giants didn’t trade him. IMHO, I think it wouldn’t hurt to have Osi in our D Line. Yes, he had a down year since that famed Super Bowl run, however, he has been battling minor injuries over the last couple seasons and if the price is as little as a mid rd pick, then I say, Go for it.
Along with the emergence of Justin Smiley and Abrayo Franklin, Umenyiora could only add to a pass rush that lately has shown sparks of brillience and could help even further with the development of our LB corps, as this would free them up for more pass coverage and run stopping. Instead of constantly being the tip of our blitzing schemes.
Add to the fact that the Niners could concentrate on upgrading our D. Secondary with reliable, well thought out draft picks. Our D could easily climb to a higher level than we were last year. If there is any problems I could foresee, is where would he line up, is he familiar with the 3-4 scheme the team currently runs, and finally, the overall cost of his services.

How does he fit in a 3-4?
He’s not an OLB, really – he book on him is that he doesn’t have the play-reading skills.
But he might be a little undersized for a 3-4 DE, where he might get exposed against the run.
Exactly, he's a 4-3 guy not a 3-4 guy
Doesn’t work in 3-4 as DE or OLB.

maybe we can get one of his friend to play tailback!

I've been considering this since last season ended.
In his post-game interview after the Giants got spanked by the Panthers (damn Panthers, could’ve had a better pick this year), he said he likely played his last game as a Giant. If he’s not guaranteed a starting position, he’s going to demand a trade. The Giants will likely trade him on draft day regardless.
I don’t know how he’s work out here for the amount of money he’s owed. If he renegotiated and agreed to play situationally until he got the hang of playing OLB, then I’d be fine. Problem is, when asked to drop into coverage in that funky scheme the Giants were running last year, he played poorly. Don’t think he’d make the transition smoothly, and thus wouldn’t fit.
As a Niners fan stuck in Jersey...
I hear a ton about the G-Men, even when the Jets make the AFC Championship game. Osi has gone downhill since the Super Bowl run a couple years ago. As already mentioned, he has complained to the media and made his retirement threat. But he has been injured, and hasn’t played well at all. One of the last games of the season, he only got in on about five plays. Why? Because he stinks against the run. And that’s an understatement. There’s no doubt if healthy he can be a good pass rusher, but I hope the 49ers don’t give up more than a 4th to get him. Switching from a 4-3 to the 3-4 and already being bad against the run makes it a little tougher.
Since someone brought up the rams...
What about Adam Carriker? Since the rams are running a 4-3, I’m not sure if he’s being used properly since hes built to be a 3-4 DE. They look to be a 4-3 team for quite a while given their investment in Chris Long, and ive heard murmurs that they were listening to offers a while back so maybe a 2nd day pick would do the trick.
