NN 2010 NFL Draft Community Big Board - Spots 6-10
Initially I was going to wait a couple days before posting the results of the top 5 in our community big board, but we got enough responses yesterday that the results are fairly solid for who is going to be our top 5. Also, I won't list the results after the top 5 because I don't want to potentially influence voters.
1. Eric Berry, S, Tennessee (1,216 points)
2. Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma St (1,057 points)
3. Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska (954 points)
4. C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson (805 points)
5. Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa (677 points)
Now I know plenty of you will disagree with some or all of this Big Board. You're more than welcome to disagree, but please be respectful of everybody else's opinion. After all, this is a community Big Board, and not a single person's board.
I closed the polls at 9:45 this morning and in the span of 26 hours and 45 minutes we had 557 people participate. In the end you can see where there were some relatively clear delineations in the voting. Berry was the clear-cut #1, finishing with 114 first place votes. Suh actually finished with the second most 1st place votes (103), but Okung was in more individuals top 5 overall, which is what moved him past Suh. The most interesting battle was between Suh and Spiller. Suh won fairly handily in the end, but it was actually back and forth between the two of them for most of the day. Suh didn't start pulling away until late yesterday afternoon.
After the jump, I've posted a few pointers on the vote and the poll for spots 6-10. The primary thing to keep in mind is that you're making your selections based on how you think the 49ers should order their own big board. You can go best player available, need, value, character concerns, or any combination of those. Again, please just vote once. But do vote, because the more people that vote, the more accurate the representation will be of the community as a whole.
First off, remember that you can use the scroll bar on the right side to see the last few names. They're in alphabetical order by last name.
I realize I've probably left out players you might like, but given that we're looking at spots 6-10, I think I've included most, if not all, of the important names. To fill out the 25 candidates, I took the 20 individuals that didn't get in the top 5, and then added 5 more players. I added in a couple requested players from the last thread, and then a couple others from the Scouts Inc Top 32.
In the end, how you vote is up to you, but just remember that this is a 49ers big board. Not a mock draft and not a big board that can be applied to every team. Use your own philosophy, but just pretend this would be going to the 49ers when we're done.
If you think an essential player is missing, double-check the list first.
Voting is now closed on spots 6-10. Head over and vote on spots 11-15.

just a heads up
you listed trent williams as being from rutgers
Williams/Davis
I think I typed in his name right after I typed in Anthony Davis (it automatically alphabatizes). I can’t correct it without deleting the poll and restarting it, so hopefully people will see that.

Berry
If we didn’t need a o-lineman in the worst way, I’d push to trade both #1s, or a #1 and a #2 to move up to pick Berry.
CORRECTION
Trent Williams is listed as being on Rutgers. That was a typo. It is actually the Oklahoma Trent Williams we’ve been discussing all offseason.
Crazy scenario!
OT, Spiller and Iupati are available when we pick @ 13
Do we potentially trade next years #1 & 3rd for a ANOTHER 1st rounder this year with Seattle at 14? That may be enticing to a rebuilding team like Seattle.
And thus, we end up with a new RT, Iupati @ RG, and Spiller heading into camp!
I would only want that if we got some kind of OT, OG, and Spiller combo. And I don't think SEA is parting with #14 for next years 1st an 3rd; maybe next years 1st and this years 2nd.
its OK to pick a gaurd in the first round, but trading up for one is stupid. A perfectly good one can be found as late as round 4.

Yes Elite level guards like Baas are regularly found late in the draft.
Gimme 1 round!

Baas was a high 2nd round pick
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

My point being... If you have somebody good
Pick them. I’d much rather get Iupati or Asamoah if we can get them at a fair price then waiting for the late rounds to replace Baas with another equally horrible guard.
Gimme 1 round!

Ah, I see your point.
Well a guy like Mike Johnson or John Jerry can probably be more effective than Baas and could be had in the 3rd-4th

it's a ballsy move, I don't see it happening with a rookie/interm GM though. With the draft as deep at the OL position it would be a great year to do it.
this is one of the motivations
We are ahead of the pack right now in the NFC West, lets seize the bull by its horns and put some serious talent there that will be there for the next half a decade.
Why didn't they call us first?
PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles have traded cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong to the Cleveland Browns for linebacker Alex Hall and two draft picks.
The Eagles will receive picks in the fourth (105th) and fifth (137th) rounds in the upcoming NFL draft. The deal was announced Friday.
then why are we looking at LB's?
partially agree on the CB’s – but I’d take Brown over Bly, and Bly started last year
We are looking at Spikes replacement
And a pass rushing monster and Gocong is neither of those
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on Apr 2, 2010 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions
we're drafting secondary, and trying to find snaps for Brooks. The team will always be signing LB's, and every other postion to try and get better, or just bodies for camp
Demarius Thomas on the list instead of Damian Williams?
Thomas may have a great height/weight/theoretical 40 time, but Damian Williams is the better option, especially for us. Williams has better short area quickness, runs routes better than a lot of pros, has good hands and can return punts. True he didn’t run a very good 40, but he looks a lot faster than that on film. And that 40 may cause him to drop to us in the 2nd round.

Notice how completely different his style is from crabtree. He is probably the most intelligent receiver in the class. He may not have deep threat speed, but he can get open deep by exploiting every mistake safeties make.
Thomas plays in a gimmick offense, has never had to run good routes, has lapses in concentration and hasn’t worked out or run the 40.
Williams
I pulled from ESPN’s Top 32 Big Board for the list of candidates.
Do you think Williams is one of the top 10 players on the 49ers draft board?
I’m not saying Thomas is, but Thomas generally gets a lot of love on the big boards (thus his inclusion here for voting purposes).
by David Fucillo on Apr 2, 2010 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions
I don't think Damien Williams is on the top 10 of anybody's list
Top 30 maybe, but not top 10.
I do think Demarius Thomas makes a few top 10 lists
Member of the legendary David Carr thread, 6 March 2010
Really
You consider him one of the top 5 players on the 49ers board? If you could have picked anybody available (not just the 25 that were there previously), what would be your top 5 on the 49ers board?
by David Fucillo on Apr 2, 2010 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions
Big Board
The Big Board is about value and potential. Clausen is clearly a top 10 talent and should have been on the first poll.
I’m still in utter disbelief at the 1-5 list… I think people mistake Big Board for “most likely to be available at 13/17”
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....

There have been alot of Mocks of Bulaga going top 7.
I hope its very wrong but I’d take him over Okung. Okung may be taller and better against the bullrush but their feet are about even and Bulaga has a killers mentality in the trenches that most guys just don’t have.
Gimme 1 round!

Russel Okung, Ndamukong Suh, and Eric Berry are all going to be taken in the Top 5.
Not exactly three players who will be available at #13.

talent
If it was “clearly” top 10 talent, wouldn’t he have made Scouts Inc’s Top 32? I’m not saying they’re right or wrong in their Big Board, but that is certainly some proof that it’s not so clear cut.
And as Hoopers Judge stated, Berry, Suh and Okung are highly unlikely to be around at 13/17.
The Big Board is certainly about value and potential, and given how the results for 6-10 are coming in, this community as a whole does not seem to view Clausen in that manner. Again, it doesn’t mean you’re wrong, but I’m just pointing out the circumstances.
by David Fucillo on Apr 2, 2010 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Somehow it doesn't seem realistic
Thoses top 5 players selected will not be there. I find it hard to understand how the brass would even considered to put them on their Board. Yea, may one might fall, but most of theses guys are gone. I was looking at it at a point of who was available when we pick. So… I guess I’ll make the botton 500 after this.
picks
Again, a big board is set up as if you could have any player on the board that you particularly want. After all, what if you just ignored Berry, Suh, and Okung in preparation and on the board and all 3 fall to you. Obviously the odds are slim and none of that happening, but the Big Board is about being prepared for any situation.
by David Fucillo on Apr 2, 2010 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Crabtree was atop their board last year and he fell, so it makes sense to at least list them.
I want the best player in the draft.
Toby?
Would he really be in your top 10? Just curious.
Handsomeness is a burden my face has to live with. Every day.
Nah.......
dont know alot of the college player’s ….but for me he’s what hardnose football is about raw and tough …want him to replace Norris @ fullback ……….
Kewl
fullback
And you’d spend a first or second round pick on him? On a fullback?
by David Fucillo on Apr 2, 2010 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions
Kinda .......
cuz i would have traded one of my first for a late first and mid second and then yes one of my second’s ….everyone know’s you follow Norris then you find Gore …he would give a good counter tre option in the eye formation …..
Kewl
Miller
I think the team is looking to have Brit Miller eventually surpass Norris. I’d be pretty surprised if they grabbed Gerhart.
by David Fucillo on Apr 2, 2010 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions
True enough .......
but he juz look’s like what i envision a Sing and Rathman type player ….actually that’s who i would want him too emulate ( Rathman ) …..
Kewl
Gerhart will be drafted as a HB. He’s got too much potential to put up good rushing and scoring numbers. His ability can’t be limited by turning him into a FB. And If I were him and someone told me I was being converted to FB, I would NOT be happy.
And who is to say we can’t develop Miller into Rathman 2.0?
eric berry
How about we offer #13 and #49 for KC’s #5 and we take Berry. We can throw in one of our project Safeties to fill it out. That leaves us with a #17 to take a tackle.
rlott has been saying that for a long time now.
He’s also said that we can trade both 1sts to get higher while still getting a 2nd rounder in return.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Spiller over McCoy?
By the poll more ppl will take Spiller over McCoy?
I don’t think enough ppl understand what a Big Board is.
by J L Perez on Apr 2, 2010 5:50 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
Not sure who he is.
But I have to think the 49ers would add Gerald McCoy over Spiller if both were available. Our need at RB isn’t so great that we can’t afford to pick McCoy over Spiller.
by J L Perez on Apr 2, 2010 6:01 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Need
I’d imagine maybe some folks don’t think McCoy would fit the system.
by David Fucillo on Apr 2, 2010 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions
I voted for McCoy
I put him at No.4
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
by SportsChicken on Apr 2, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I had him at #4 also
I think he would be great in either scheme. But I probably would have put spiller at #6 so I’m not crushed by it or anything.
Handsomeness is a burden my face has to live with. Every day.
I'd take, and in this order
Berry, Suh, McCoy, Okung, and Bradford, although I didn’t cast my vote.
I want the best player in the draft.
