NFL Draft Coverage: ESPN vs. NFL Network

With the NFL Draft only two days away, everybody is making their final preparations for viewing. Over at Mocking the Draft they ran a poll regarding what network you'd use for watching the draft: ESPN or the NFL Network. I'm curious how NIners Nation breaks down. I'd imagine ESPN would get the most votes because it's the longest-running and a lot of people don't get the NFL Network.

So, where do you fall? Three years ago, when I live-blogged the whole draft I found myself bouncing back and forth between the two channels. However, since then I've transitioned over to the NFL Network almost exclusively. I'll flip back to ESPN during NFL Network commercials, but for the most part I stick with the NFL Network. Part of it is the fact that Chris Berman is absolutely soul-crushing at this point in his career. Yes he's got the passion but I find Rich Eisen infinitely more entertaining. If I have to hear Berman give away a pick from the NYC cabbie, I'm gonna scream.

As far as the actual analytical/player talent (we'll keep those two separate!), both networks have their good and their bad. Mel Kiper and Todd McShay fight like a couple of elementary school kids, and Mike Mayock just seems better. I do like guys like Steve Young and Adam Schefter on ESPN, but I don't think they make up for the negatives for me to switch back to ESPN on a more regular basis.

I've put together a poll to see how people view the draft. I know some folks that don't have cable have to live-stream the draft over at nfl.com or 49ers.com. And others just stick around Niners Nation for their coverage, which is always welcome.

So how do you watch the draft? ESPN, NFL Network, Both, or Neither?

My situation

NFLN isn’t part of the dish network base package.

I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice.

What sucks

is that in my area, we can get the HD feed from ESPN (via TSN) for the draft, but the NFL Network doesn’t have an HD channel yet. In other words, High Definition usually takes priority over garbage standard def.

NFLN HD

I know it exists, we just don’t have it here.

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 20, 2010 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s available in San Francisco. I think they’ve been rolling it out slowly.

NFL Network

There shouldn’t be any debate NFL network hands down… I can watch it on my TV, Computer, or Cell Phone now. No matter where im at the NFL network is always at my disposal

by aalbert08 on Apr 20, 2010 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

this is the first year I've had NFL network

and I was sort of lobbying for us to DVR that channel – but the guys are just so used to ESPN that it’s kind of a tradition at this point, so I think that’s what we’re going for. If we were watching live we’d probably flip back and forth

If you don't like Brandon Medders you're not a true fan.

by wjackalope on Apr 20, 2010 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

I mean

to me, the draft is Mel Kiper. I know that people are really down on him here, and I can see why – but this guy LIVES for the draft. It would almost NOT be the draft without him. I dunno. He’s kind of annoying but I still like watching him for some reason.

NFL Network

Definitely will be watching on NFL Network. This is mainly because I really appreciate Mike Mayocks opinion. However, during commercial breaks i stop over at espn for breif moments. i really dont like kiper and mcshay. forutnately the HD is available to me and I have NFL network access on my phone with Verizon so Im not stuck at the TV. I can go out and still be watching the draft

first thing i ever got to watch on the app was the 1981 americas game. absolutely awesome

by SuspendingBJ on Apr 20, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I like NFL Network much better but admit ESPN steps up their game for the draft. I usually don’t watch ESPN because they focus on personality more than substance (Dikta, Edwards, Carter, etc). However on draft day I think they roll out their A Team (minus McShay).

I will probably mostly watch NFL Network for the 1st and 2nd day. Last year I found NFL Network didn’t pay much attention to the draft starting with Round 4, just talk again about the first few rounds. At that point I’ll probably be watching ESPN because Kiper attempts to break down every pick.

Both

Unfortunately, I don’t get NFL Net at my place so I can’t watch it there, but I’ll head to the bar and have them put it on. After the Niners’ picks, I’ll head home and watch ESPN. It’s almost pointless though since the volume will be muted at the bar, but at least I won’t have to look at Kiper’s bad hair. Once I get home, I’ll just mute it so I don’t have to listen to it.

Rich Eison > All

I answered NFL network but i actually switch off between both of them. I do lean heavily torward NFL net though.
I think ESPN has better player info when hes drafted, they usually list 3 pro’s and con’s for the player, and show a good amount of highlights. NFL network is great for its commentary but they let their conversations drift into the picks and you kind of want them to shut up and talk about the player at times. But NFL network is still a very young channel, im sure theyre going to improve with their draft coverage now that they have a year under their belt. Adam Shefters info is usually as reliable as it gets and sometimes he tells you the pick before it even comes up.

by Beatclash on Apr 20, 2010 12:56 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah I watch ESPN solely for Schefter's coverage
