Schefter: Roethlisberger to be suspended 6 games; Steelers looking at trade options

We've certainly had plenty of discussion about Ben Roethlisberger but this remains a significant story. Adam Schefter is reporting that sources are indicating that Ben Roethlisberger is facing a 6 game suspension to start the season. Schefter indicated that if certain unreported conditions are met, the suspension would eventually be reduced to 4 games. He has tweeted and retweeted some interesting information. For instance:

Pittsburgh has begun contacting teams to trade Ben Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick. At least one team considering it. Story far from done.

The next 24 hours will be especially interesting with any potential Steeler deal.

He also retweeted an interesting comment:

This tweeter was on to something last night. RT @bdischy: Coincedence that PITT has 5 National TV games but 0 of their first 6 games?

Do you believe in a conspiracy like this? Is the 6 games potentially reduced to 4 sufficient? Any ideas where Big Ben ends up? And if the Steelers do get a top 10 pick, are they drafting Jimmy Clausen?

Official Press Release after the jump...

Star-divide

COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL notified Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER today that he 1) must undergo a comprehensive behavioral evaluation by medical professionals and 2) will be suspended without pay for the first six games of the regular season for conduct detrimental to the NFL in violation of the league's Personal Conduct Policy.

After consultation with Commissioner Goodell, Steelers President ART ROONEY and the commissioner informed Roethlisberger by telephone today of the two-step approach that is designed to hold Roethlisberger accountable for his conduct and provide him an opportunity to change his behavior and establish himself as a responsible individual.

In a letter to Roethlisberger, Commissioner Goodell said that Roethlisberger must adhere to any counseling or treatment that is recommended by the professional evaluators to help him make better decisions and avoid situations that can cause legal or other problems. A professional behavioral evaluation is mandatory for anyone that has violated the NFL Personal Conduct Policy. Roethlisberger may not attend any team off-season activity after today until he has completed the evaluation and the evaluating professionals confirm with the commissioner that Roethlisberger may resume football activities. If so cleared, Roethlisberger will be able to participate in training camp and preseason games this summer.

The commissioner said he would review Roethlisberger's progress under the plan prior to the start of the regular season and consider whether to reduce the suspension to four games. Failure to cooperate and follow the plan could result in a longer suspension, the commissioner added.

"The Personal Conduct Policy makes clear that I may impose discipline ‘even where the conduct does not result in conviction of a crime' as, for example, where the conduct ‘imposes inherent danger to the safety and well being of another person'," Commissioner Goodell stated in his letter to Roethlisberger. "As the District Attorney concluded, the extensive investigatory record shows that you contributed to the irresponsible consumption of alcohol by purchasing (or facilitating the purchase of) alcoholic beverages for underage college students, at least some of whom were likely already intoxicated. There is no question that the excessive consumption of alcohol that evening put the students and yourself at risk. The Personal Conduct Policy also states that discipline is appropriate for conduct that ‘undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.' By any measure, your conduct satisfies that standard."

Commissioner Goodell said his review of the matter included the extensive volume of material released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Milledgeville Police Department; public comments by and a private conversation with Georgia District Attorney Fred Bright; comments and recommendations of Roethlisberger's representatives; a personal interview with Roethlisberger on April 13; dialogue with current players, former players, the NFL Players Association, and others; and information learned by the NFL office in the course of examining the Milledgeville matter.

Other excerpts from Commissioner Goodell's letter:

  • "I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you. My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor. That said, you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans."
  • "Your conduct raises sufficient concerns that I believe effective intervention now is the best step for your personal and professional welfare."
  • "I believe it is essential that you take full advantage of the resources available to you. My ultimate disposition in this matter will be influenced by the extent to which you do so, what you learn as a result, and a demonstrated commitment to making positive change in your life."
  • "In your six years in the NFL, you have first thrilled and now disappointed a great many people. I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity to get your life and career back on track."

In addition to the discipline imposed on Roethlisberger, league policy requires that NFL teams remit to the league a portion of a suspended player's salary starting with the second suspension in a year for violations of the personal conduct or drug policies. The second such suspension in a year results in the club being assessed 25 percent of the suspended player's forfeited salary to a maximum of $200,000. Prior to the Steelers trading him to the New York Jets, wide receiver Santonio Holmes was suspended for four games for violating the substance abuse program.

how do you approach it if you're the team looking to get him?

I mean, what goes through your head? What can you do that Pittsburgh couldn’t (to keep him out of trouble)? Are you going to try and re-work a deal with him that includes “behavior” clauses? Make it known up front you’ll suspend him/fine him for even being out late?

I just don’t know why another team would feel they can manage him any better…

if the Steelers think he’s damaged the franchise’s reputation, won’t he instantly dirty the rep. of the new team?

If you're the Browns what do you have to lose?

I’m sure if he took the lowly Browns to the Super Bowl playoffs his creeper indiscretions with underage girls in seedy bar bathrooms would likely be “forgotten”. I realize that a trade with the Browns would be interdivision and inter-rivalry but who else would you like to dump damaged goods on than your rival?

This guy won 2 Super Bowls for them

The fact the Steelers are ready to let him go, shows how big a problem Ben has become. He’s not even worth keeping on to keep them winning. No playoff appearance is worth having a goon like Ben as your QB.

by Amigo on Apr 21, 2010 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm sure opinions vary

From a team who has recently won two super bowls to a team who has recently been pretty damn crappy. The Steelers may think that Ben had little to do with their success, true or not, and the Browns could think that Ben carried the Steelers. Just because you don’t think a playoff appearance is worth haveing a “goon” like Ben as your team’s QB doesn’t mean that those fans in the Dawg Pound think the same.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Think Ben hadn't lost a game in Ohio until last year...

and that was to the Bengals. I’m sure Browns fans are clamoring for this right now, or at least wouldn’t be terribly pissed if they got him. Then they can at least have a reason to hate their QB other than him sucking.

He definitely will be off most tradeboards

but two things are different now, which might influence Ben’s behavior and a team hungry for a veteran QB:

1) He’s never been caught and punished before (correct me if I’m wrong but I only remember the Vegas hotel and motorcycle incidents). He knows future incidents will be met with more severe punishment, where before he thought he could talk his way out of things.

2) He is no longer under anybody’s radar – no one will give him the benefit of the doubt now. Behavior clauses in his contract will be standard.

Cheezeburger to the Bills!!!

I’d bet my bank account on it. They need a QB in a division that already has 1 future HOFer and 2 potential future pro bowlers. They’ve been terrible at drafting QB’s in recent memory, so why not make a trade for a guy that’s already established himself as a good QB with 2 SB rings. I say it’s a done deal, but I wonder if the Steelers really want Clausen? They are rumored to believe in Dixon greatly, so they may be looking to add a top notch defensive player. Berry, Thomas, D. Williams and McClain all come to mind with this trade going down.

Dixon?

I’d suggest the Leftwich signing indicates that the Steelers believe Dixon isn’t quite ready to start. Long term, Dixon is an interesting prospect but I think he’d struggle if he played an extended amount now.

And I really don’t care who takes Clausen, as long as it isn’t the niners.

I think putting in Dixon will be a big image booster for Pittsburgh

Leftwich is so injury prone anyway. I know people have issues with Dixon’s size, but his game against the Ravens should have won him a chance to prove himself. I think the best way to do that is in the beginning of the season.

by Amigo on Apr 21, 2010 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Charlie Batch

Don’t forget, the Steelers also just resigned Charlie Batch for 2 more years and he’s proven to be a reliable stop gap solution. That means they now have 4 QB’s under contract. Why sign Leftwich when you already have 3 QB’s under contract unless you’re planning on getting rid of one of them.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

Which is disgracing the NFL.

I don’t believe he raped a girl. I believe he’s a what.. 28 year old guy acting like he’s 17 years old. He bought underage girls alcohol, he’s partying constantly, rolling around with an entourage and getting plastered in public, while being the franchise quarterback of one of the league’s most storied and respected franchises in professional sports. It’s unfortunate that he had to be accused of rape when it’s very clear to me that he didn’t do it, but it’s also unfortunate the kind of decisions he’s made. He agreed to uphold a certain standard and he hasn’t. He was a role model and a huge figure in that city. A HUGE figure.

So you’re proceeding with the assumption that I believe he raped a girl. I don’t. The only law he broke was furnishing alcohol to a minor and MAYBE indecent exposure, which I’m 50/50 on.

by SportsChicken on Apr 21, 2010 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

Should Ben have asked the sorority girls to furnish an ID? They were in a bar/club no? I always work under the assumption that it’s a bars job to check ID at the door not mine. Therefor it’s my opinion that Ben can’t be responsible for furnishing alochol to a minor. It’s not like the girls were hanging outside of 7-11 soliciting someone to buy them booze.

If partying, in the offseason, and rolling around with an entourage are violations of the league’s conduct policy Goodell better get busy issuing suspensions to most of the league.

The thing that really confuses me is that apparently think Ben should be suspended 10+ games, or atleast more than 4-6, for what, partying? Seems a little severe.

I’m not even going to spend too much time arguing this. It’s fairly obvious to identify an under age girl in a bar and it’s fairly obvious that this is the kind of trouble you run into when you follow an intoxicated girl into a bar bathroom, security or not.

Ben failed to protect himself in the situation, that’s his problem, this is his punishment.

And if the Steelers do get a top 10 pick, are they drafting Jimmy Clausen?

Yes.

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 21, 2010 10:05 AM PDT reply actions

Also, just because the team is contacting teams in the top 10 doesn’t mean they are seeking a swap of Ben for Top 10 pick straight up. Depending on Big Ben’s suspension, I would think the Steelers would be willing to trade Ben for a top 10 pick (like 5,6 or 7) for a swapping of first rounders (18th) and Roethlisberger. That team in the top ten may be asked for additional compensation, but it will be hard sell considering the games BBR will miss.

The Steelers move up to get Jimmy Clausen, and Team B receives a very valuable 18th selection and a solid QB (minus 6 games minimum). The only problem is that there likely isn’t anyone in the top 10 looking to deal for just the 18th pick and Roethlisberger. Maybe the Raiders? Bills?

I really don't think the Steelers will go after Clausen

They already have 4 QB’s under contract (Roethlisberger, Batch, Dixon, Leftwich). Why would they want to add a 5th?

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

by urnext on Apr 21, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

If Roethlisberger is traded

That leaves 2 back-up QBs and an unproven guy in Dixon. Leftwich would make a great 1-year stop gap before returning as the back-up in 2011.

I really don’t think Pittsburgh would be comfortable with Leftwich as the starter (or Dixon) if BBR gets traded, and I think they can bring Clausen along at a nice pace while Leftwich (or Dixon) takes the bulk of snaps in 2010.

So yeah, I agree they wouldn’t want to add a fifth QB, but the three behind BBR are all back-ups (with the exception of Dixon, who may or may not be a servicable starter).

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 21, 2010 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

That sounds good

But Batch just signed a 2 year extension, so I don’t see why the Steelers would resing him for 2 years only to cut him. Maybe none of his contract is gauranteed, or less than 1 million is guaranteed, so they won’t have a problem cutting him, but I just get the feeling they’re happy with Dixon as the starter and Leftwich and Batch as the back-ups.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

I believe the "conspiracy theory"...

… about their primetime games but I don’t really think it can be called as such. I mean, someone who thinks of that isn’t exactly sporting a tinfoil hat. It just makes sense. It’s silly, but it’s true.

As for the trade, I myself think it’s about a 30% chance that he actually gets traded, and that the most likely candidate is the Raiders. It would be an excellent way for Al Davis to save face. He doesn’t have to actually admit that JaMarcus isn’t a ‘great’ player by getting Ben Roethlisberger, just that he isn’t on Big Ben’s level.

I also think that the Steelers would try their very best to get a trade from Cleveland because the feeling around the league is that Holmgren still has a solid chance at taking Clausen, and getting that kid is the only way the Steelers organization doesn’t take a trip to the basement. Or at least just above the basement, let us not forget the Browns.

And then God created Saturn.. And he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

Raiders or Bills for sure.

My money is on the Raiders. It just seems like the type of trade they would be in on. Ben and Cable will be two peas in a pod. Lets just hope they don’t go out drinking together.

Suspension could be brought down to 4 games.

And it wouldn’t matter anyway. I’d much rather he’s playing for the Raiders so he can hold the ball too long and get crushed all day, or he can throw it to receivers who can’t catch like DHB.

“Here are the known no’s on interest in Roethlisberger right now: Rams, Bills. Others might not be, just not known yet.”

Same here.

It would be a serious dissapointment. I would have a very very hard time cheering the team on if it is lead by this dirtbag.

Having said this, I highly doubt it would happen. It doesn’t really seem like Big Ben is the type of person Singletary would want to have in the locker room. At least I hope he’s not.

To answer your question, Yes.

I would have a hard time rooting for Ben, even if we were winning with him. If winning was the only thing that mattered, I wouldn’t have been of fan of this team over the last 7 or 8 years. I love the Niners and I always will. I will always want them to do well and win, but I don’t want Ben to be a part of this team just like many others on this site.

“sometimes i cant stand the bleeding heart liberalism of bay area, mainly frisco, natives”. I don’t care. And try not to make these kind of assumptions. I’m not a bleeding heart liberal, and I’m not a San Francisco native.

You might disagree with what he did..

..but right now he hasn’t been charged or even arrested. Guilty until proven innocent, right? Or is it the other way around?

I don’t think the niners will get Ben because the Yorks are too weak an ownership group to deal with the potential baggage (same with Vick last year), but it could be a great time to get a top 15 QB who is 28 on the cheap.

I know this is a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, but the bay area (myself included) managed to love Bonds. Assuming Ben didn’t rape/assult anyone, would he be any more difficult to cheer for?

Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.

If they weren't willing to go get McNabb for a 2nd rounder + late round pick

I’d be really disappointed for them to go get Roethlisberger for a 1st. Alternatively I’d be pretty happy to see him to go to Seattle. As a 49er fan in the Pacific Northwest I’d enjoy seeing the 49ers grind him into the ground twice a year as opposed to Hassleback, who seems at minimum to be a decent guy.

by Deelron on Apr 21, 2010 11:45 AM PDT reply actions

I’m a 49er fan currently living in Seattle myself and the irony of Seahawks fans having to root for Roethlisberger (considering how Superbowl XL played out) would be incredible. Most Hawks fans I know have not gotten over that debacle.

Big Ben is the most overrated player in the NFL, imo- a title formerly owned by Shaun “touch me and I fall down” Alexander. Unless he’s traded into the right system, the team that gets him will really regret it.

Complete disagree. You mean the system with a bad offensive line, only one clear starter at WR who is great at getting the ball and maybe making a few people miss as opposed to being a burner, a TE who excels at receiving and blocking, and an offense that specializes in an athletic quarterback to move the pocket and make intermediate throws?

That has nothing to do with the system or how a QB plays. He has played pro-bowl caliber for the Steelers, that won’t change when he changes teams, especially to a team who runs the similar system.

Raiders like guys with the Bad Boy image. They also like Strong armed QB’s. They also don’t value top 10 picks in the same manner as most other teams, i.e. last year when they picked DHB.

They like a bad boy, they don’t like drunken fratboys, despite the current state of that locker room. Big Ben does not come off as a bad boy right now.

Greetings Mr. Rampage, it’s been a while.

1. Thoughts on the Ginn trade? Like it or hate it?
2. What would you suggest Baalke give up for Roethlisberger?
3. Any draft picks that will be the method to your rampage tomorrow?

by Andrew Davidson on Apr 21, 2010 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks, been stuck in corporate where everybody watches eveything

1. I’m ok with the Ginn trade. Ginn’s likely to have a bigger impact than any of the recent 5th round picks (although since it is a deep class in general the Niners 5th round pick might look like a 4th rounder in any other draft).
2. I think Roethlisberger is about as dirty and creepy as he looks. I’d prefer that Baalke not pursue him as I’m naive and am holding out for Smith and/or Davis to come along this year and beyond.
3. I’ll throw a hissy fit rampage if the Niners take Mays tomorrow. I’ll throw a chubby in the pants rampage Berry falls into the Niners lap. If the Niners end up with Haden and an OT I’ll throw a pretty content rampage. Ultimately I don’t think the Niners can screw tomorrow up too badly but I guess you never know. Although right now, I’m not a big fan of them drafting Clausen.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

They just went out and got Carr to be the number two

With Ben aside, I don’t think that the 49ers are even going to consider a QB this year. I believe they are content with Smith, Carr, and Davis. If Smith fails, Carr is in and Smith will be gone next year. At that point the 49ers would draft Locker or Mallett in the first next year. I think our depth chart is set at the position.

Here is what Matt B. said today on his blog…

“Smith is playing in the final year of his deal. As of right now, I’d say there’s a 50/50 chance he’d be back next year. David Carr is not a long-term starting option and Nate Davis is being brought along very slowly.”

So,If Alex doesn’t step up right away this year,Davis will be counted on to be at least one of the possibilities to be THE man in 2011 and beyond.
Maybe the Niner do actually go after Clausen in the draft,or go after Big Ben in trade, but I doubt it.
I am happy with the 3 QB’s we have now and I think Alex and or Carr will get us to the playoffs in 2010,but in the future, when we want a QB that is more than a game manager, who can actually win games with his play, instead of just not mess up too badly, then Nate might be THAT guy.At least I hope he stays around to get his shot, like alex has had 3 or 4 shots and Carr has had 3 or 4 shots.
Davis in being groomed slowly,as was the plan from the day they drafted him.How slow is slow? Good question. I guess it depends on how the other QB’s hold down the fort in the next year or two.

by TIM___ on Apr 21, 2010 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

I'm for it.

I must be the only one. I just want to win.

This was on ESPN Insiders…

During an appearance on SportsCenter on Wednesday, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers now appear willing to move Ben Roethlisberger if the price is right, and that price appears to include a Top 10 draft pick in Thursday’s draft. Looking at the teams in the Top 10, one could argue that the Chiefs, Seahawks, Browns, Raiders, and Jags would all be interested in the upgrade that Big Ben would represent. Schefter reported that the Steelers have contacted the Rams, 49ers, Raiders, Bills, Jaguars, Seahawks and Browns about Big Ben thus far, although Jason La Canfora of NFL.com indicates that only the Rams, Bills and Raiders have been called. La Canfora calls Oakland the “only real option at this point.”
