Pete Carroll Is the new Belichick wtf
Carroll Is getting everything. its like he has a Black card in the NFL. Am I the only one who's kind of nervous at what the Hawks are doing over there? They IMO won the draft. Golden tate (steve smith NFC west) earl thomas, Russel okung. Those are 3 high profile players. Then they turn around and basically swap picks with the titans, and receive 2 players in return. Lendale white, and a DT. then turn around and get leon washinghton. THe hawks are stacked. Not to mention what they've done before the draft. WhiteHurst, Reggie and mike williams. they're rebuilding and rebuilding fast. Everyone is talking about how The NFC west should be ours for the taking...I'm not going to say it's not but I definitely don't believe we will be considered the weakest division this year. Arizona Isn't as bad as off as most think.

I hope both teams continue to draft so well.

Me too
It would be pretty fun to watch, the division would finally stop being the league joke. Really though, the whole NFC West did well, I liked the Cards and Rams drafts too.

They're not going to be a problem...
When all their players get injured from the hard hitting Niners!
Seahawks
They added a lot of young talent, but who knows if they’ll all hit. They landed a fat running back in White who is inconsistent, and Leon Washington who could be very solid, but can also be inconsistent.
I don’t think the 49ers are guaranteed anything, but I’m not wildly concerned about the Seahawks based on their offseason work. If healthy they’ll be tough no matter what, but drafts don’t pan out right away generally.
I agree
If Leon Washington comes all the way back from that injury he can be a real weapon for them. If Lendale White gets any carries against us next year I will be thrilled. He’s awful.
It was a real nice draft for the Hawks overall. Of course we were able to run all over them last year, and we just got better in that regard.
White didn't look fat last year, he just didn't get carries.
As a Niners fan, I am pretty disappointed that Seattle had both a stellar draft and that they improved so much through trades. If Washington is healthy, he is solid player. White is a beast who dropped serious weight last off-season but got lost in Chris Johnsons wake of greatness. I would have liked to have seen the Niners be more aggressive in both FA and with trades with all the late round picks.
As I see it, both Seattle and the Niners drafted a tackle and safety within the first two rounds and Seattle got the better prospect at both positions. Seattle landed a nice receiver while the Niners landed a stud guard- advantage Niners. Where we separate the two teams is in the late rounds where Seattle landed legit NFL talent while the Niners gambled on young players that may or may not actually make the roster. I like the Ginn pick-up but it seems like a whole lot of real NFL players were available via trade this year to a team who wanted to swing for the fences and the Niners were too busy firing their GM to notice.
IMO, the Niners have been slightly too timid in an off-season that could have ended any discussion as to whom the best team in the West is. Seattle, by being extremely active have made strides to get back in the conversation. Arizona imploded and St. Louis is years away. I like the Niners early draft, I just wish they would have attempted to improve more, especially in reaction to the moves by Seattle.

i like how you only have one option of us winning and it’s “by a landslide”
fail poll is fail
DREAM DRAFT:
1. Trade #13 and #17 to Browns for #7, 2nd rounder, and 4th rounders
2. Take Eric Berry #7
3. Rodger Saffold in Round 2
4. Dexter McCluster in Round 2
5. BPA!

I was thinking the same thing
I didn’t vote, but I would vote that the 49ers win but it will be close.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.
Don't forget
Ari just shipped McFadden back to Pit
I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice.
That's a good thing for them, McFadden was ghastly.

The new Belicheck?
Really? I didn’t know that Pete has already won 3 Super Bowls.
"Bar None!" - William Floyd
Belicheck
His philosophy of the draft for a while now has been quantity over quality. That’s why he traded down in the 1st and attained 3 2nd rounders. For him, the more picks the better. He would’ve taken both #1’s the Seacocks had and traded to get 5 #2’s if he could.
"Bar None!" - William Floyd
Actually, Belicheck's strategy...
has been to accumulate picks and then use them on really good players that other teams stupidly pass on. Every year there is that moment in the draft when you go, “wait a second, how did the Pats get that guy?”. Belicheck or whomever is running the show behind the scenes, trades back, adds picks and then drafts players 10 picks after where they were slotted. I don’t blame them, I blame the teams that allow this to happen.

yea but he get guys for cheap
He almost got Peppers for a cheap, hell he got randy moss for a 4th rounder. Pete is making them type of moves not as great of players, but interesting players.
Way too early for this sort of freakout.
Yeah, he got Lendale White, who’s started less than half his team’s games since being drafted and put up a whopping 3.7 yrd/att average.
Pete Caroll? He’s a failure as a pro coach in two stints: the Patriots saw their record get worse every year under him. In New York he inhereted a .500 team and saw them go 6-10 in his only season, which was notable for a complete meltdown.
Did he do a great job drafting? No – he didn’t do anything special. He had two high picks and he made the obvious selections with both of them. This doesn’t look to me like a budding genius – he makes the picks anyone would have made, which makes everyone look good the day after the draft when you have two high first rounders.
I hope you hold Balke to this standard-

I agree to a certain extent but the acquisition of professional need players for picks that might not ever make it to the 53 man roster is pretty impressive. By my count, Caroll solidified the LT, FS, RB and KR positions with only his 1st and 5th round picks. If a few more of his draft picks pan out then the Seahawks got a pretty nice face lift over the last three days.
The Sacramento Convergence concept offers Sacramento, the Central Valley, and the State a solution to feasibly construct a new multi-use Entertainment and Sports Complex.
I do.
I was actually thinking about putting up a fanpost asking people how this year’s draft changes your evaluation of last year’s draft, but I think it’s probably a waste of time – I suspect many of the same people who rated us highly this year for getting both Davis and Iupati rated us poorly last year for the trade which make Thursday’s draft possible.
But honestly, I don’t think it’s time, yet, to worry so much about who other teams draft – even Arizona and Seattle. RIght now, the 49ers are in a place where how well we do is going to depend on how well our guys develop, how good a job our coaching staff does, etc.
If we don’t do that stuff, maybe we limp into the playoffs if our opponents suck, but so what? We lose in the first round. If we do all of those things, then I’m not worried about anyone else – we’re in good shape even if they do vastly improve.
Soft schedule and players entering their prime will propel this team.
What they do once they get to the playoffs is a whole other story but this team should be able to make it with what they added this weekend just on the strength of their opponents. One of the main reasons I preferred to pass on Big Ben is due to the weak ass schedule the first half of the season. How would the Niners sell replacing Smith if he was 5-1 or 6-2?
I love the first three picks. I would have liked to have seen the Niners brass be more aggressive with trades and FA or worse case, lock up both Davis and Willis with fat,“no salary cap” money this year. If they were worried about finances then they probably should have drafted a CB and reallocated Nate Clements salary to their stars. Now Bly or another CB of his ilk needs to be brought in for depth. I would also suggest that the Niners go for broke this off-season and bring in Alan Faneca for a two year deal while Rachal/Iupati develop and share time but that’s just an idea.
I guess I don’t really fear Seattle so much but I wish they didn’t have quite the successful weekend that they did because it won’t be long before they are right back in the mix and I was looking forward to 6 easy divisional games.
The Sacramento Convergence concept offers Sacramento, the Central Valley, and the State a solution to feasibly construct a new multi-use Entertainment and Sports Complex.
Not if Faneca is signed.

Good point
While the Seahawks emerged this draft with some pretty awesome players (all prospective, of course. Nobody’s played yet) I don’t think this draft screams “Pete Carroll Brilliance”
He simply took some very good players available with very high draft picks. The trades were slightly more skillful, and I must say I’m afraid of Leon Washington this year.
I guess we should worry about the Raiders being the best Bay Area football team too
OMG, they got Jason Campbell and found a way to draft Jacoby Ford in the 4th round.
He had 2 high first round picks. It’s very hard to do anything but improve your team (on paper, at least) with ammo like that. I don’t see the White acquisition as much of an improvement for Seattle, either, and I still think we’re the team to beat in this division.

If you think Golden Tate
Is the next coming of MVP-caliber Steve Smith (not last year’s version) your worry level is going to be much higher than mine. You reference the first three picks made by the Seahawks, and I think pick by pick the Niners did just as well, caused by what has been noted above, both teams had two first round picks. It’s kind of hard to screw that up.
I’ll give Okung vs. Davis to the ‘Hawks. They’re rookie tackles. They could be Michael Oher, they could be Mike Williams (the tackle from Texas, not the WR from USC, can you believe there was another WR named Mike Williams drafted this year by the Bucs? I digress). Who will translate better is impossible to say at this point. But I’ll give it to the ‘Hawks since Okung’s bust quotient seems lower.
Next is Iupati vs. Thomas. It’s hard to score this one in favor of the ‘Hawks. While Thomas could become the next Bob Sanders or Ed Reed, Iupati was by and large considered to be the most pro-ready prospect outside of Eric Berry. Personally, I would score this one in favor of the Niners, but for arguments’ sake we’ll call it a wash.
Finally, you have Tate vs. Mays. Like I said, if you think that Tate is the next coming of MVP form Steve Smith, then you think the Hawks’ draft blew the Niners’ out of the water. I, on the other hand, think this pick overwhelmingly slides the value in the Niners favor. I don’t think Golden Tate will ever be anything special in the NFL. I think Mays can be an impact player.
As for the other stuff, so what? They swapped a 5th rounder for a returner with some offensive versatility. The Niners swapped a 5th rounder for a returner with some offensive versatility. LenDale White, a rotation d-lineman, and Reggie and Mike Williams? Shoot, I HOPE Reggie and Mike Williams make the Seahawks roster.
So no, I’m not too concerned.
Thank you, Chris Cohan, for finally doing the right thing.
I would quibble with your view of Iupati.
He’s a great player and a great pick for the 49ers but he most certainly was not considered the most pro-ready prospect after Eric Berry.
And what is it about Mays that would have you think he’d make an overwhelmingly better pro than Tate?

"Pro-ready" was the wrong turn of phrase
Safest is a lot better, although I would have to add Suh and McCoy to those above him. Regardless, I judged the first pick vs. pick on a bust quotient, and Thomas’ bust possibility is definitely higher than Iupati’s.
As for the Tate thing, I really couldn’t tell you. It’s not a USC-Notre Dame thing. I’m a Cal fan. I hate both those teams’ football programs. When I watch him play something just screams mediocre to me. It’s completely irrational. I can’t justify it. While I think the possibility of either of them busting is about equal, I just feel Mays’ upside is higher. Therefore, Niners win the draft, Seahawks lose it, na na na boo boo, stick your head in doo doo. Just kidding. It was a great draft for both teams and I’d be stoked if I was a Seahawks fan, but in regards to the original post I just think it’s a little reactionary to be so worried about the moves the Seahawks made when they’re pretty equivalent to what the Niners did.
Thank you, Chris Cohan, for finally doing the right thing.
When they went head to head Tate came out looking a lot better. He had a good game against USC.

Any time a team can get the #1 LT in the draft, a legit #1 rated, with the 6th pick in the draft its a serious steal.
I like Earl Thomas, he would have been one of my picks to add to the 49ers. For some reason I don’t like him as much on the Seahawks. He’ll still play his game in Seattle but his weakness is exposed on that team, run support. The Seahawk secondary hasn’t been good in run support so Earl isn’t helping them much in that department. Earl Thomas can tackle, many people seem to think he can’t. His problem is getting off of blocks.
I’m not a Golden Tate fan, I also don’t think he adds any new dimension to the team. A receiver who could stretch the field would have been ideal, but you cannot pick what wasn’t available. He’s younger and hopefully more durable, but Nate Burleson scared me more.
Leon Washington & LenDale White or Julius Jones & Edgerrin James. I don’t see an improvement to worry about.
The Seahawks will only improve leaps and bounds if Carroll and staff can find a few lower picks, UDFAs or current bench players to step up and become solid contributors. Otherwise I will say they had a solid draft to build upon for next season, still too many roster holes to expect big things this season.
Golden Tate
doesn’t really seem like Steve Smith 2.0, IMO.

Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, and Taylor Mays > Okung, Thomas, Tate. We definetly filled our all our needs and our team was better to begin with.
Davis's stock fell for a reason.
He has a ton of upside but possesses just as equal downside. Mays really isn’t that great, seriously. I tried to like him as a prospect, but I couldn’t. He’s just too poor in coverage and really isn’t even a good tackler.

Well for a 2nd round pick I think he's fine
would’ve hated it if we’d used a first rounder on him. I do think he’s very coachable (see the Senior Bowl for evidence) and I think he’ll be pushing for a starting job by the end of the season.
I was right, you were wrong.

The new "Belichick"
The problem with this argument is that, so far, all coaches who follow this philosophy have not succeeded. See Eric Mangini, Charlie Weis, Josh McDaniels, Romeo Crennel, etc.
