RB LeGarrette Blount changes mind; headed to Tennessee Titans
So much for the excitement that Blount was bringing. Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount has changed his mind and will not be signing with the 49ers. Apparently after thinking it over, Blount has instead decided to join the Tennessee Titans. Such is life.
One reason we were using "reported" earlier is because the 49ers had not yet sent out a press release announcing the signing. Now we see why. Although it's certainly disappointing to lose out on him, I still think Anthony Dixon can perform in the type of role we might have hoped for in Blount. Dixon weighs approximately 7 pounds less than Blount, so it's not a huge difference. Additionally, NFL teams can certainly work to get the right kind of weight potentially added on to a player. Disappointing as it might be, we can still anticipate a training camp battle between Anthoyn Dixon and Glen Coffee.

May as well say it here, too.
He didn’t want to compete. Doesn’t seem like the Titans offered him more money, just that he wanted a guaranteed roster spot, which I guess I don’t blame him for but then again I don’t want him here if he doesn’t want to be here.
And then God created Saturn.. And he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

actually
i think it’s more about playing time. with teh titans he’ll likely be their short yardage and goal line back.

I doubt it.
He knew when he agreed that he wouldn’t be that guy with Gore on the team. It’s not that he suddenly had a revelation, he just didn’t want to compete.
And then God created Saturn.. And he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

he wants to play and make a team's roster
and has a much better chance of doing so in TN than in SF.
I agree.

If he didn’t think he could beat out Dixon why should we want him? I was looking forward to the training camp battle, but we should still have very good depth at RB.

That guy is an every down back not to mention one of the best players (not just RB but bbest player) in the league.
I’m not so sure about that. Dixon had some damned impressive games against SEC defenses and he was basically the Bulldogs’ only weapon. Blount was playing in a funky Oregon spread attack. Not sure if he’d look quite as good in a traditional NFL role.

Pretty ridiculous
The guy’s dream (I’d assume) is to play in the NFL, to expect him to choose the Niners “Just because” is silly, it’s absolutely in his best interests to sign with the team that gives him the best chance of making an NFL roster. He’d be a fool to do anything else.
If Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati would rather play for the Titans would you not want them here either?

But then you said:

That seems pretty cut and dry to me, and also pretty silly. I’m sure he’d like to play for the Niners, it’s just that he’d rather go where he has a better chance of playing. If you turn away anyone who doesn’t want to play for the Niners beyond any kind of rational self-interest, well, good luck filling out an NFL roster.

I really, really don’t care about Blount. Apologies for any confusion but my statement “I don’t want him here if he doesn’t want to be here” still stands. In this context or not, it makes sense.
And then God created Saturn.. And he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre... contemplating a crime.
No, it doesn't actually
But whatever. I’d even dispute the notion that he doesn’t want to be a Niner as unfair. He’d just rather make an NFL roster than sit on a practice squad, so he made the intelligent decision that gave him the best chance to do that. Not wanting players that make those kind of decisions doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.
by Brendan Scolari on Apr 25, 2010 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions
It does for me.
I’m not talking about Blount. Who are you to tell me what I’m feeling is real or not? I’m not TALKING about Blount when I said that “in this context or not” If someone doesn’t want to play for us then I don’t want him. I’m not saying he doesn’t, can you get that through your head? I’m not saying he doesn’t. I’m not saying he doesn’t.

ugh that comes off really badly like I'm trying to be a douche.
I’m not. I just wanted this to be over like three comments ago. I don’t think he doesn’t want to be a Niner, I just think he doesn’t want to battle for a spot, and to me, this team needs those kinds of guys and he isn’t one of them. I wasn’t high on him in the first place and I’m not high on him now and I’m not bothered at all by this, he can go to Tennessee and I’ll forget he exists.
And then God created Saturn.. And he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre... contemplating a crime.
Fine
Although:
I just think he doesn’t want to battle for a spot, and to me, this team needs those kinds of guys and he isn’t one of them.
I hope you know that the number of guys who would rather have a chance of being on the practice squad than have a roster spot guaranteed to them is zero. Really, I sincerely doubt there’s a single guy on the Niners roster that would actually want that. Do you want to have to compete for your job (meaning there’s a good chance you’re unemployed) or would you rather have your salary guaranteed? So, yes, I’ll stand by what I’m saying that your statements don’t make sense or at the very least are unfair, even if they make sense in your head.

I don't get the rudeness at all
You make a statement that doesn’t make sense, so I ask you about it. Now you’re being rude because you can’t explain yourself well? Really, it’s absurd. Don’t contradict yourself if you don’t want other people to ask questions about yor comments.
Do you think so little of my intelligence? Of course I know that.
If you “know that”, then why did you just say:
I just think he doesn’t want to battle for a spot, and to me, this team needs those kinds of guys and he isn’t one of them.
There is no such guy. You are holding Blount to an unfair standard. Nobody doesn’t want a better chance at making a roster, no one. If you "know that’, then don’t make statements like the one above.
You get it one way or the other. If you think Blount should have to want to play for a team that he’s less likely to make the roster, then you need to hold the other players to that standard as well. The problem of course is there are no such players so you cannot possibly hold them to such a ridiculous standard.

At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.
I'd suspect and prefer
that we come out of training camp with 3 RB’s (plus Robinson). Gore, Coffee, and Dixon.
We all know what Frank the Tank can do, Coffee may improve, and Dixon gives us the huge brusier that neither Gore nor Coffee provide us.
Give the enemy a huge dose of Gore with Coffee spelling him, then finish them off in the 4th quarter with a fresh, huge back in Dixon would pound the tired D-Linemen and LB’s into submission.

I expect Dixon to eventually...
(before the end of the season) to be #2 on the depth chart, behind Gore but ahead of Coffee
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
I'm pretty disappointed
I was actually hoping to see Blount as the #2 back next year. I think Tennessee might have just upgraded in going from White to Blount.
Thing A
I agree, I'm a little disappointed
Blount’s size and ability to kick into another gear once he hits the secondary made him so tempting to see behind our line and offensive philosophy. He could have wowed in training camp and been #2. More importantly and more years down the road, he could have been the eventual replacement for Gore. Do we have that person yet? I like Dixon and Coffee, but we don’t necessarily have our back of the future. I would have at least liked to see those three guys battle it out. Plus, Gore’s not young anymore and there’s nothing wrong in the NFL with having a stable of running backs around.
by eastbayglory on Apr 25, 2010 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions
Has to be because LenDale White left
and so Tennessee is much more in the market for a big back than SF is. Raises the odds that he makes a team whereas he would have had to beat out more players to stick with the 49ers. Hate to see him go but is probably a good career move for him.
I don't really know
White didn’t leave, he was traded away. They’re only in the market for a big back because they traded away their chronically under-used and therefore disgruntled current big back. Im not even sure why Tenn. Even bothers.
by Deelron on Apr 25, 2010 7:27 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
I’m not sure what White’s salary is but I’d wager its significantly more than what Blount will make and Blount didn’t even cost them a lower round draft pick so in swapping out White for Blount they save money, get an extra draft pick and quite possibly upgrade their backup/big back position. I think it makes a ton of sense for them. White may not have had many carries last season, but Johnson cant play every snap so there is an opening and the productive life span of running backs in the NFL seems to be getting shorter so a little insurance and a younger player backing him up makes a lot of sense too.
Thing A
Thats true plus White was kind of a disapointment for the Titans I believe. I think another priority for Blount besides making a roster was being closer to family. His family is from the South.
White has also struggled with staying in shape
over at Field Gulls they seem to think that Seattle acquiring Washington and White means nothing in regards to Forsett’s future there.
I was right, you were wrong.
Really huh?
Should be interesting in their camp as well. They have what, 5-6 RBs on the current roster?
Forsett, Jones, White, Washington, Quinton Gaithner, Ryan Podwell and Louis Rankin. I believe Rankin is the FB, so that leaves 6 RBs still on the roster.
I was right, you were wrong.
I’d say that Washington, White, Forsett and maybe Ganther make it.
I mention Ganther because he has talent but he hesitates a bit too much at the line of scrimmage.

Honestly, I haven’t seen either play much, but from what I’ve read about Dixon, I don’t think he’s what I’m looking for. I was kinda hoping Blount would be able to step in and at least compete for that last 3rd RB spot, but if Dixon really is better, then it should be fine. There are other things to consider
Such as what his family wanted and what his agent has been telling him. I know that he is from Florida and i dont know if he still resides there but if he does its definitely a short commute from Tennessee to Florida than it is coming all the way from the west coast. Plus we can never forget the influence of his agent or who ever is his consultants are. So i’m not going to say that he didnt want to play for the niners or that he didnt want to complete for a spot. Smoke's right
But remember along with Mike Solari who is a good o-line coach that is respected around the league they also have Ray Brown coaching this kids. He is a 20 year vet with an All-Pro and pro bowl experience for the Niners and he will teach them everything he knows and i honestly optimistic about their futures and if they are able to good run blockers in the beginning then it only helps them in the long run because if with a good running attack comes a play-action game and that will give them time to adjusted to the skills that pass rushers have in the league
Sure,
but for trading up in the first round, Davis should be at least marginally better at pass protection than Snyder. I would hope.
No that's true
and yes i believe that he will be an overall pass protector than Adam because he has the skills to do it but he has to develop them

I dont really understand what is so unlikeable about the guy. Throwing the punch wasn’t really excusable, but neither was the Boise St. player harassing the losing team as time runs out. The guy admitted he made a mistake, welcomed his punishment and seems to have learned from the experience. Young college players make mistakes the same way young college students make mistakes. If you can’t forgive a 20 year old for punching an obnoxious idiot in the mouth and then apologizing and accepting punishment then I’m just not sure how you can root for many players in the NFL. Josh Morgan had much more serious character questions surrounding him coming out of college but most people here seem to have grown to like him just fine.

fwiw
from nytimes football blog:
I interviewed Dixon and Blount at the Senior Bowl and asked them to take me through their favorite plays. Blount is mainly a zone runner and his response was a short and sweet self-assessment that he simply looks for open space. In contrast, Dixon’s favorite play was a counter play from the spread formation. Dixon, from Mississippi State, gave a lengthy and detailed analysis of what he’s watching and thinking before the snap to the moment he hits the crease.
Blount has the raw talent, but I believe Dixon is the most refined between-the-tackles runner in this draft outside of Ryan Mathews and Jahvid Best. I would not be surprised if Dixon becomes the 49ers’ supersized version of Chester Taylor to Frank Gore’s Adrian Peterson.
I like that..all of it
Just looked on ESPN and Dixon had a grade of 69 whereas Blount had a grade of 59. So they felt similarly

Never thought Blount was any good. Plus I think Coffee was gonna hand he and Dixon their asses.

"We're going to get the players we have targeted," Baalke said. "I promise you that."
Yeah, even Peter King is expecting big things from Coffee this year (pun intended).

Is he really?
Or were you just making a well placed joke? Because I’d be surprised if he knew much of anything about Coffee.

Well
I know you were making a well-placed joke, I’m just wondering if King actually wrote something about Coffee as well. :-)

I kind of stretched the truth I’ll admit… He wrote something about Coffee the RB in MMQB last year and was expected big thing so he does know who he is!

I hope so
The thing I love about Coffee is his pass-protection.
He has improved A LOT in that area.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Has he? Are you basing that on what you saw at the end of last year or from the offseason mini-camps?

Basing it on his play as the year went on

This is pretty impressive…

After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
Here is the same play
but a much better quality video:

Also, check out the stiff arm on this one, he ain’t slow either:
Thanks, the version you found is definitely better quality
and I liked the 2nd one, as well. I saw an interview with this young man last night. Very humble, engaging smile, has had a pretty uninspiring youth (he and his family—Mom and 3 younger bros) have been homeless a couple of times.
I hope that this young man makes it big time!!!!!!!! #2 behind Gore ’til Frank hangs ’em up, then the #1 guy.
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
GOOD!!!
We don’t need anyone that doesn’t not want to be here!!!!
huh?
“We don’t need anyone that doesn’t not want to be here!!!!” Do you mean
We don’t need anyone that doesn’t want to be here!!!!?
That extra “not” makes your statement mean the exact opposite of the version I supplied. I want to make certain that I understand what you’re trying to say…
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
The guy was undrafted for a reason. It’s no loss.
