49ers OTA and Mini-Camp dates set
The NFL released a list of dates for all teams' OTAs and minicamps. Teams are allowed to hold a rookie minicamp on one of the first two weekends after the NFL Draft and conduct one mandatory minicamp for veteran players.
Earlier in the offseason, on March 29 and 30 the 49ers held some OTAs. Going forward the dates are as follows:
OTAs
April 30
May 17-20
June 7-8
June 10-11
June 14-16
Minicamps
April 30-May 2 (rookies)
June 18-20
What should be particularly interesting about these various OTAs and minicamps (except the first rookie minicamp this week) is what veterans will be absent. While players often are excused from some of these events, sometimes an absence is a sign of displeasure concerning an individual's contract status. There hasn't been much in the way of complaining thus far, but it's something to keep an eye on.

Alright lets whip the boys into shape...
Im especially curious into the weights of some of our important players.
A. Davis and Iupati need to push each other and transform about 5-10 pounds of fat into serious muscle. Also Alex Smith and Frank Gore, these two guys need to be sharp and hit the ground running from day one…
As a USC Trojan I am going to be happy to see Pete Carrol on Day One, but this time Pete you are only going to be winning an average of 5-6 games a season instead of the 11-12 average wins you enjoyed with SC. A little sad to thinkk about no??

maybe Davis could stand to lose a few pounds
but I don’t know what you’re talking about regarding Iupati. Sure, anyone you draft out of the college ranks, you expect them to get in an NFL weight room and get stronger. But Iupati looks pretty darn lean and mean to me. Doesn’t look like there’s a lot of fat on him— he’s just BIG.
No surprise, but the key is going to be just how good a job Solari and Ray Brown do coaching up the first rounders. Iupati needs to work on his technique and Davis needs to stay motivated. But outside of the OL I think the battle to watch is going to be Dixon v. Coffee. Gore is going to get the lion’s share of the carries, but one of these two guys could really make an impact behind him. At this point I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Dixon wound up as the No. 2 back on the depth chart when all is said and done.

Agree
Completely, about Lupati he is a beast!! about Coach Solari he is going to do a great job and make this two Elite NFL players , he is one of the best for the job trust me, can wait to see Goldson and Mays in the back field, can WAIT!!!
I wonder how long it's going to happen before people get it right?
Duration of his career is my guess
"I'm blessed..... Thanks, God bless" ...hey, it worked for Tim Tebow.
Goodell announced him at the podium as "eye-you-pati"
That’s pretty terrible since it’s relatively easy to pronounce. It’s not as if it’s the TE that the Rams drafted with the name 20 letters long.

Agreed also
Solari is having a fresh start and will be setting the tone with the O-Line and at the same time he brings a lot of experience to the table. I’m really looking forward to this, especially with Davis being only 20 years old… and Iupati being a big Island boy with a simple background who really appreciates where he is at.
One thing I like About Dixon
is his patience to find a hole, just like Gore and I really like Dixon to get the chance over Coffe
I also agree
It seems like Coffee just runs into the back of the linemen instead of trying to make something out of nothing… like bouncing outside. I understand the O-line play was terrible last year, but backs need to try, it seemed like he was content with just falling forward. I’ll give him a chance but if one of our new prospects delivers… then that’s just the way it goes.
Coaching should help him be more patient...
Frankly, I could care less who the #2 is because they’re all the same guy in my eyes, just with different speed. Which if it went based on that, it would be Gore, Coffee and Dixon.

When Iupati eventually becomes heavily muscled on that frame
He’ll be like 350 and not the least bit fat.
Gimme 1 round!

What's the Dixon prediction based on?
highlight reels on youtube? Coffee has them too.
"Son, I'm going to break you like a wild horse." - Mike Singletary
If you only compare highlight vids
I am still more impressed with Dixon. As for Coffee’s play behind the crap O-line, that is understandable, but a lot of the time he just fell forward into the pile… seems like he didn’t try to make something out of a broken play or anything, he didn’t try to bounce outside or use his vision to gain those few extra yards and just make it happen… in my opinion that’s the hallmark of a great back, someone who works with what he has and makes the best out of it.
This has been mentioned before, but here it is again,
I’m sure I remember reading that Coffee was told not to bounce outside. He was instructed to follow the design of the play regardless. Raye is so silly he values discipline and patience over all forms of creativity. By patience, he means, keep doing IT until it works.
Barry Sims is a key as well
He is the most experienced member of the line and can provide some much needed tutoring to the rookies. He even openly stated that he would go out of his way to mentor whoever the Niners drafted. So having one of the best O-line coaches in the league and a former all-pro guard along with some one who been in the league for more than 10 years and has starter and backup experience can only mean good things for the future of those 2 kids
That's awesome...
I hadn’t heard this, but it’s certainly a good thing. Can never get too much help.

the WR battle too
after Morgan (who might even be in the battle) it’s up in the air.
And Punt Returner
Niners O-Line: "Great Wall of Nine-uh"
Just curious
Has anyone read any report as to how regularly Alex has been practicing with his receivers over the last two months?
Mini-camp?

From what ive heard
Alex & Michael Crabtree had been in constant touch and had been working their way through the advance parts of the playbook. I dont know bout Vernon, Josh & Frank but i have no doubt that all of them had been working together
April 30th ?
They better be in town now and ready !
I am very interested in how A. Davis and Iupati do but also Alex Boone with Solari and Brown.
Boone was listed as a possible 3rd rounder I believe maybe higher… he has the potential to be a good RT.
Those guys will make everyone else on offense better.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
yeah
I’m anxious to see what he does this time around. He has made good on all of his commitments and promises ( i.e. not jumping on police cars and drinking a case and a half of beer every day, and he has lost significant weight).
I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

I read that too
I think it finally dawned on him that he lost himself alot of money because of everything he did that led to him being undrafted and if he can live up to him potential than he would make a good swing tackle and would eventually replace Barry Sims since he is towards the end of his career
I will be there - sort of
I’ll let you know what I can see…

Can regular folks just go out and check out the mini-camps?
I live in the area and would love to see it
no

NFL Draft???
I made 32 out of the 32 first round picks for the teams needs and what they needed in the draft going forward into the season. This is my 42 year of doing mock drafts and I have a 98 % sucess rate on my picks based on what the team needs!!! I had Iupati and Davis going to the 49ers in the first round almost from the gate, simply because they needed so much help up front. They got a steal with Dixon being there, a patient running back with some speed. Mays is a beast but i don’t see just how he fits with the 49ers?? He is more of a linebacker and cannot cover for shit in the passing game unless he works is but off to make drastic improvements!!!!
49ers Strong Safety Style of Play
see: Michael Lewis
description: Mostly an in-the-box safety who has a major role in run support. Occasionally asked to cover a tight end or running back. Rarely ever matched up against a wide receiver.
Mays can do those things and is more athletic than Lewis. How does he not fit in? That’s practically everything he did in 2009 at USC.
Niners O-Line: "Great Wall of Nine-uh"
furthermore
the Niners are known to go to Nickel on passing downs or against 3+ WR sets. They bring in another CB and a safety who (supposedly in Roman’s case) has more range and move the “box” SS down to LB.
Mays could essentially take Lewis place on these downs to start and would rarely have to cover much more than a RB if anyone.
Niners O-Line: "Great Wall of Nine-uh"
Dixon
A couple of things to ponder. Coffee didnt fair well behind our bad oline last year, performing at a 2.7 ypc. Dixon averaged 5.4 ypc on almost 1400 yards behind a very poor offensive line. Not one of which was drafted or picked up as free agents.
dixon thought he should have been a first rounder and I tend to agree that he went well below his value. The SEC is the closest to NFL competition we have, and he led the conference in rushing that included Mark Ingram of Heisman Trophy fame. He also had very inconsistent quarterback play so the defenses knew he was the main focus of the offense. Coffee had around 1200 yards in his last year at Alabama behind a very strong oline. On top of that he can catch, block, and he is durable. Glen Coffee had better get his but in gear or it will be gone.
