Who makes the team as the "blocking" Tight End

Byham or Curtis or Finley? I feel that Tony Curtis provides us with the best balance of blocking and recieving down in the red zone. Training camp will tell as always. Curtis has shown that he can be a weapon in the redzone with sure hands and athletic ability. He's also come up with big plays on special teams in the clutch. From the Bear Pascoe experience I learned that draft picks aren't locks to make the team no matter how "bloody" they say they're going to make someone. Byham looks like a lineman and to me, provides Curtis with the most competition. Finley just beat out Pascoe for the PS and that's about it. Click on Curtis's name for my analysis on him. Here's the link if for some reason doesn't work. http://www.ninersnation.com/2010/2/5/1297450/introducing-tony-curtis-the-tight

Unnecessary because...

You’d rather have Josh Morgan motioning onto the line of scrimmage taking on DEs? That’s what we did and that’s what DIDN’T work. Gotta have a blocking TE and motion Vernon in and out of the LOS blocking or going out for passes. We’re not so one-dimensional that way.

by Magua831 on Apr 29, 2010 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Unnecessary because...

you can use an eligible lineman as a TE. Hell, we can check in a LB as a TE if we want to. Having a guy on the roster just to block is absolutely pointless.

by 9thevolution on Apr 29, 2010 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

It's 4th and 1 at the goalline...

and you bring in Tony Wragge as the TE. What are the niners going to do? Run the ball. Lose the ball. Lose the game. Nuff said. Bring in a dude like Curtis who can catch and better yet, jump 3 1/2 feet into the air and grab that rebound for a TD. That is of course, if VD is covered. Look at this clip. http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d803e8414 This isn’t Madden where you don’t need options.

Simple answer...

we now have the biggest, meanest guard on the field. Run the QB sneak.

Agreed. We could do that out of the spread.

Byham can catch too

He offers more versatility than simply being a OT-lite. The problem is Vernon Davis doesn’t have a back-up really. Walker is more of an H-back and can’t really handle the full fledge TE duties if Davis goes down. In Jumbo packages teams also often look to the 2nd, or “blocking TE”, on play action.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

by methodrampage on Apr 29, 2010 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

This is true...

Walker isn’t nearly the blocker that VD is. Though I wonder if he would move into the primary role if Vernon went down? He is adept in catching the ball and with Vernon as one of our primary receiving targets, it would be nice to have the guy with better hands there.

Houston Texans beat up on us

with a blocking TE

I was right, you were wrong.

by smileyman on Apr 29, 2010 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Owen Daniels?

I hardly see him as a blocking TE. I’d put him closer to VD; a guy who primarily catches passes but has great blocking skills.

by 9thevolution on Apr 30, 2010 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions

No

I was right, you were wrong.

by smileyman on Apr 30, 2010 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

No???

Owen Daniels career stats:

2006: 14 games, 12 starts. 34 rec, 352 yds, 10.4 avg. 5 TD’s
2007: 16 games, 16 starts. 63 rec, 768 yds, 12.2 avg. 3 TD’s
2008: 16 games, 16 starts. 70 rec, 862 yds, 12.3 avg. 2 TD’s
2009: 8 games, 8 starts. 40 rec, 519, 13.0 avg. 5 TD’s Season lost to knee injury.
Projected 2009: 80 rec, 1,038 yds, 10 TD’s.

Seems like a pass catcher to me. Just for measure, I’ll throw in his stats against the Niners.

10/25: 7 rec, 123 yds, 17.6 avg. Long 42 yds (x2). 1 TD

Now VD’s stats, same game.

7 rec, 93 yds, 13.3 avg. Long 29 yds (x2). 3 TD’s

by 9thevolution on Apr 30, 2010 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Misunderstood your "no" then.

Their blocking TE didn’t have a catch and didn’t really help their running game. They only had 90 yards rushing total. I fail to see how their blocking TE helped them at all in that game. Please explain how he’s relevant at all in that game?

by 9thevolution on Apr 30, 2010 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps

it is pointless to have a guy on the roster whos only skill is blocking. But our offense uses a lot of 2 TE formations and we have to have atleast 3 on the active roster so why not make sure the 3rd guy CAN block to give us that short yardage package of plays? It’s a good idea to keep one TE that can block well.

by crumpedup15 on Apr 29, 2010 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions

May be so...

But I think we did fine last year with only two TE’s on the roster. It does offer us versatility in the passing game when we go 3 TE sets, but it’s going to require our OC to be creative and allow a pass on those plays, as well as our QB to get the ball in the right spot. Then the guy also has to be able to make that catch when necessary and not drop it. If he does, than we might as well use an eligible OL.

I’ll admit Byham should certainly be more capable of catching than say, Wragge, but I wonder who’d be sacrificed on the roster. My guess is a WR.

by 9thevolution on Apr 30, 2010 8:43 AM PDT up reply actions

We don't need one. All we need is to not be atop of the leaue in 3 and outs and turnovers.

Funny

I remember the articles of how he’s such a strong dude because of his farming days and cattle driving experiences. A feel-good story that didn’t end good.

by Magua831 on Apr 29, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

He was strong.

He just had horrible technique and couldn’t hit a defender in the open field.

I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

this guy is bigger and can line up at the H-Back, why? Because he plays well in space = the opposite of Bear. We all just liked him because his name was Bear.

Save time...

I originally posted this last year. Here it is again for the NINERS!!!!

It is my pleasure to introduce to you 49er fans, Tony Curtis

I have been following his career since he came out. He is going to give the Niners a tough, physical, blocker who can double as a leaping jumping bean in the red zone. He was caught in a numbers game in Dallas which is unfortunate. He beat out their former 2nd round pick in Fasano and had the position, then Mr. Jones goes and drafts a physical beast (Bennett) in last year’s 2nd. Tony proved himself but took a backseat to the 2nd round pick. If you watched HBO’s training camp reality show, you saw the coaches enabling the heck outta Bennett. No matter what that kid did, the silver spoon was never taken away and he was given everything to him. The TE coach literally had to plea with him to come back to practice and tuck his jersey in. C’mon! Are you serious? Well, he is Jerry Jones’ guy and he’ll keep his job before the coach will. Shame… So, now Tony back home in the bay area, although we’re from the waaaay south in the Monterey Bay. I’m excited to see Tony again on Sunday.

Strengths: Blocking in all aspects. That’s what he’s known for, that’s what he’s good at. Will get beat to the inside on occasion when the defender is slanting inside. Will drive smaller opponents down the field. Shows good pass protection when staying in to block. Flatbacked Michael Strahan in playoff loss two years ago, made the highlight reel when trying to display the nastiness of that game. In 2007, caught 3 passes for 3 TDs. 2 of them he was uncovered Video at 1:53 but the 3rd one against Philly he leaped 4 feet off the ground. Ok, maybe I’m stretching it a little, 3 feet sounds more like it. Look at 1:38 Video  On the goal line, you will be hard pressed to find a better drive blocker like Curtis at the TE position. He simply owns the defenders and will stay low, and squat those fat 300 pounders into the endzone. Video Look at 3:16 and see the technique. The biggest plus with Curtis is that he’s a playmaker. When put into make-or-break situations, Tony is going to MAKE the play. For example, the game versus the Buffalo Bills and the Cowboys had to recover the onside to have a hope to win: Video  It was Tony Curtis who came up with it to give them a chance. They say it was Nathan Jones but it’s Tony.

Tony1234_medium

Weaknesses: He’s going to have to learn the playbook and practice it a lot before he completely understands his role. We’ll see what offense Coach brings. From what I’m seeing, he’s going to have a lot more 2 TE sets with the two blocking TE just signed. When catching the ball, he’s not going to make anyone miss, but will try and bulldoze the tackler. Has to cradle the ball when running with it and protect it like his newborn baby. He’ll lose sight of that if he’s going to get the ball more. Gotta concentrate Tony, do your thing boy. So, as with most of us professionals, communication is key. He did miss his block last season on a punt that lost the game. But what you don’t know is that the left side of the line was blocking inside the whole game as an adjustment and blockers were replaced due to an injury. Well, when you replace and shuffle an entire side of a line, don’t you think it would be wise to ensure everyone is on the same page? video 4:47

Tony12345678_medium

Overall: He could explode and show everyone that a small school kid can beat the odds in the NFL and actually be given a chance, or he could get caught up in another numbers game. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s got hops, good hands. I’m really excited! The redzone is going to be a gimme! Video They nicknamed him, “Some like it HOT!”. Anyways, I’m a fan of his and I’ve broken down every film of him for the past 3 years so I may be biased, but he’s gotten a bad wrap by the media in Dallas. He’s been called a potentially good 2nd stringer, but you know what. He beat out Anthony Fasano for his spot and Fasano was traded to Miami. Fasano started in Miami and caught 3 tds last season.

Yes

I just put it here too.

Byham probably won't make the team

If we really want to throw someone in there for that purpose, Brit Miller is perfectly capable. I believe Tony Curtis will make the team and not a one-dimensional Nate Byham.

"I'm blessed..... Thanks, God bless" ...hey, it worked for Tim Tebow.

by Drew Kerr on Apr 29, 2010 5:40 PM PDT reply actions

Byham will make the team.

Do you think Trent made that pick on a whim. Coach Sing wants a big blocking TE. If he can block like Coach wants, he will stay. “Smack ’em in the mouth!” Thats what this man is about.

by L. J on Apr 30, 2010 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Why don't we just do it like the big boys

Why have a blocking TE? If his primary job is to block, then just use a Guard to do it. It will open up a roster spot for another position. Since the 49ers use 2 TE’s in passing plays alot, then they should get a 3rd catching TE in case one gets hurt.
