Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

What is Wrong With B.Marshall?

what is wrong with brandon marshall that i cant see? Why wouldnt any team gamble and trade their first round pick for him? Lets all close our eyes and forget about our  niners for a second. Brandon Marshall is one of the top young WR out there. The guy is just getting his career started and has proven overall several years already that hes a legit annual pro bowl player. He's a true #1 wr and from everything I have read, he can be had for a first round draft pick.

From todays ESPN.com insider

"Top 5 players likely to be traded: Brandon Marshall--A lot more speculation than activity has surrounded Marshall, but that soon could change. Denver has been adamant that it won't take less than a first-round pick. Seattle, the only team to bring in Marshall, has been adamant that it won't give up a first-round pick. But anyone who does can have one of the game's top young players."

yes this has been discussed at nauseam on this site but with the draft around the corner its worht bringing up again. So now think about our niners. Is another wr our biggest need? Absolutely not. Could we really use both of our 1st round picks for other positions we actually NEED, certainly. But think about value here. Would you prefer a second tier OT or G that drops to the middle of the first round or would you rather a proven offensive commodity like Brandon Marshall? What is the percent of mid round players becomes probowlers? Low right? I think BM (insert BM joke here) would thrive under coach sing who has absolute control over his players. He would fit nicely opposite crabs and be another weapon for mr alex smith. We would still have a first round pick to use for a position of need, and we can focus on the rest of the draft to get what we want.

so please niner nation, explain to me why you would prefer to use one of our 2 first round draft picks on a guy who's not certain to make a serious impact in a nfl uni vs a proven pro bowl young WR?

Marshall

Do keep in mind that there is also a monster contract extension that would be owed to him. First round picks are owed a lot of money but Marshall would be looking for significantly more long term. As with the comments about other trade options, there is the matter of money being set aside to re-sign Davis, Willis, Goldson, etc.

Honestly...

I would rather spend both the first rounders on a position other than tackle. We could potentially have a rookie pro bowler with one of those picks depending on who it is. Honestly, WR is not that big a concern and not worth one of our 1st rounders. Besides, we have a #1 WR in Crabtree and need someone with speed to pair opposite him. Marshall is the same type of physical receiver as Crabs.

might not take a 1st round pick says rotoworld.com

NFL Network’s Mike Lombardi expects the trade market for Brandon Marshall to heat up in the two weeks leading up to the draft.
Lomardi concedes that it’s “highly unlikely” the Redskins would trade down in the first round in an effort to land Marshall. Seattle remains the only serious match, and the Broncos’ insistence on a first-round pick has been a sticking point thus far. They’re going to have to lower the price if they want to unload their talented problem child.

I can't see a 1st rounder happening

Maybe the Seahawks swap #6 with Denver’s #11 and throw in a conditional 3rd.

Thank you i was just thinking the same thing BM is just like crabtree big physical and can break tackles

so why would we bring him in if we want anything from denver 4 a 1st rd pick give us that young LT studd they got other than that peace-out see ya when i see ya and thats at the draft baaaaaaaaby!!

by jayjonna415 on Apr 8, 2010 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Marshall is under contract...

so they aren’t gonna dump him if the price is too low. It doesn’t matter what they say, it’s all smoke and mirrors. He has to stay with the team and perform if he wants a big contract. At the same time, he has to behave himself. Broncos have all the leverage and Marshall has none. If he sits out this year, he won’t get a big pay-day next year. Broncos will hold firm to their first round asking price. They either get it, or Marshall will be suiting up for them next year.

by 9thevolution on Apr 7, 2010 12:27 PM PDT reply actions

Why not to go for Marshall:

Why not spend a first-round pick on him? If you are planning to spend it on a WR, that might make sense (well, see below). But if you’re not, if WR isn’t a particular area of need on your team, you don’t use a top pick on a WR just because that WR happens to be very, very good.

As for why not to take him:

1) He’s got an atttitude problem, wants to be catered to.
2) He’s going to be very expensive and we’re a team which has other players it makes more sense to save the money for.

He’s a really good player, no question, and would probably help the team. But that’s the not question. The question is, would he help the team MORE than the other places we could spend that draft pick and/or that money? With big extensions due shortly for Willis and Davis, and bearing in mind that we’re a low-revenue team, those questions are very important.

WR is not a 1st round priority

There are to many needs to draft or give up one. You’re right as to why we shouldn’t.

by LASVEGASNINER on Apr 7, 2010 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

needs?

Teams with many needs should be drafting BPA because they obviously aren’t “one player away”. If you believed the Niners were two specific position players away from being a SB contender, then that would be a legitimate argument for drafting for need in this year’s draft.

Since that is not the case, the goal should be BPA. If Dez Bryant is the BPA at #17, then I’ll be pissed if he’s not selected. If Brandon Marshall is far superior to anyone on the board at #17, then it makes sense to trade for him if you believe he’s of sound character.

Wouldn't want him

People hate the idea of T.O coming back and Marshall has 10x the problems that T.O had.

Besides, like LasVegasNIner says WR isn’t a 1st round priority for us.

but. . .

wide receiver was not a first round priority for us last year and we still drafted Crabtree instead of Oher. I agree with it—because i absolutely love Crabtree—but it is a valid point.

I just don’t see us doing it because of the money and lack of need. We are more than just in “good standing” with our receivers, we are actually over saturated. Its something that would help, but not as much as many other positions.

I am shocked that some other team has not picked him up yet, i thought he would be traded very quickly. Maybe other teams don’t think he is an absolute No.1 wide receiver.

by TomCanty on Apr 7, 2010 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

WR wasn't a position of need last year?

I think it’s clear that last year RT was a bigger position of need than WR, but other than that, what positions did this team need an upgrade at more?

The irony, of course, is that if we had to make that decision again today I think we’d take Oher, no question, in part because Bryant might be available where he pick up a tackle we’re really excited about – like Bulaga – won’t be.

by Ronaldinho on Apr 7, 2010 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Last year

we didn’t have a NT (Franklin hadn’t performed well yet) we didn’t have a FS (Goldsen hadn’t performed well yet) we didn’t have a QB other than Shaun Hill (because Alex hadn’t stepped up yet.) we were weak at Corner and Outside linebacker (Spencer and Brooks hadn’t done much) and we had Bruise, Morgan, Hill, and Jones at WR.

I think WR was a definite need, but no where near are second. Going back it may have been better to have taken Oher, because of how well he has played this year, but Crabtree is going to be something special. I have never seen a rookie step up and play so naturally in the nfl, and he even missed training camp and the first four games of the season.

it is amazing to me how many of our defenders stepped up to show what they could do, and i put most of the credit on Singletary. Just think what will be happen this year.

by TomCanty on Apr 8, 2010 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Wait a second ...

Unlike RT and #1 WR, last year we had people on the roster who we were planning to put into the starting role at most of those positions.

RG? We had Rachal. Now, ultimately, he was disappointing for much of last season, but there was no way we were drafting a replacement for him. You can’t call that an area of need. Same with Goldson – no, he hadn’t proven it yet, but it simply wasn’t a position (unlike WR or RT) where you would expect a first-round pick to be the immediate starter.

At QB, we had Hill (remember how everybody was trumptting his W-L record from the year before – he hadn’t fallen apart yet).

Whereas at WR, Hill hadn’t shown a lot, Bruce was on his last legs and everyone knew it, and Jones isn’t a #1 WR. So that really only gave us one WR we had confidence in (MOrgan) and, again, he’s wasn’t a true #1 WR.

You say Franklin hadn’t “performed well” yet, but I disagree – he was being a solid, middle-of-the-road starter. Room for improvement? Yes, absolutely. Area of need? Not really.

I agree with you about Crabtree, by the way, but I think Oher is also going to be something special, and in my opinion a top OT is more important than a top WR. So when I say I’d rather have Oher, it’s not because I think Crabtree has been in any way disappointing; I’ve liked everything I’ve seen from him so far.

Franklin starting turning it on

mid 2008 when Nolan was ditched and took his hybrid with him. Once we switched to a true 3-4 he started doing well.

Well said

and i agree with everything you’re saying. It just feels like the reason why we needed these guys to step up was because we had a weak team. Ideally, we would want to have players that could turn into stars, who could dominate at their position/purpose. Many of our players (franklin, morgan, ect) really can never be top level players because of physical limitations.

We need to draft players in the first round that we can see becoming long term stars. Guys who dont have limitations. And then we need to draft guys that fill a need we have. I think the reason why we drafted crabtree is because he was more likely to be a star than oher. If we knew they would both be stars, we would probably rather have oher. But at this point just having a star is enough. this is why Marshall is attractive, because we know what we are getting—a potential star. if we draft a guy who doesnt work out, instead of taking marshall ill be upset.

but i am pretty sure we will draft a star, which is why i dont want marshall. does this make any sense?

by TomCanty on Apr 8, 2010 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally.

I just don’t define “area of need” as “position where we don’t have a star.”

To me, an area of need is one where you don’t have a league-average starter, or player on the roster who you think can become a league-average starter.

One of the challenges of the Niners roster is that we don’t have a lot of positions where we don’t have somebody league-average, but we don’t have a lot of playmakers, either. That makes drafting tough.

We can get a cheaper faster smarter and less BS in the 3rd rd people take 4 granted what singletary did 2 vernon davis

and know that sing is a stern coach thinking he can straghten out any knuckle head ( its like just because your dad can be strict doesn’t mean he looks forward 2 doing it ) that comes his way.I remember a ex-player i think it was montana or aikmen either one but they said the time and energy it takes a coach 2 keep trying 2 straighten a player out its the less time it takes away from the team.So in the end i hope it works out 4 BM but right now were on a mission the playoffs first then the SB and i just don’t want a player like BM on my team. That video tape of him (bleeping)off at practice was enough 4 me i don’t care what problem you have with the coach but when you start (bleeping)around at practice shows me you can be a selfish and disruptive player and i don’t want that around us you can say what u want about T.O but he didn’t (bleep)around at practice and he doesn’t get in ANY TROUBLE out-side of football and thats 2 things that BM still does.

by jayjonna415 on Apr 8, 2010 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Nothing wrong with B marshall, he hasn't ran into the right coach.

He is worth the money, the money has been his issue. He is not, however, worth a 1t rounder because the Broncos don’t want him.

by Luther K on Apr 7, 2010 5:14 PM PDT reply actions

2 words for you....TERRELL OWENS....

Unfortunately, BM (Ha ha…) suffers from the same mind set that has killed Terrell Owens career. Me first, the team a dead last. Yes, there is no mistaking that Brandon is a proven commodity. One that is young, athletic, strong as an ox, fast as the wind, and stubborn as plaque. But, his attitude isn’t worth the amount asked for to give for his services.

Speaking of amounts, a lot of people here on NN, have made claim to the salary cap and what it will be like for the team once the new CBA is instituted. Brandon and his agent will not only ask for a first rd pick for the Broncos, but a staggering, monolithic contract upon signing. With the amount of money he’ll be asking for, there’s no telling how many players we could pay with just his signing bonus. I am all for upgrading the Niners where ever possible. But, that’s too much to pay for one guy. Also, if Randy Moss can be had to the Pats for as little as a 4th rd pick, there’s no reason why Marshall should cost a first.

T.O Comparison

I believe is a good one. I could definately see Marshall throwing his QB under the bus if he is not getting the ball enough. If it smells like a rat…

His talent is undeniable, but the cost of a high draft pick and a big extension is just too much. And Crabs os a bit of a diva himself, combining the two of them would not be a good idea IMO.

by Joshuahss on Apr 7, 2010 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

honestly people need to stop badgering T.O.

he isn’t a terrible person, he demands the ball, which he should, because we would have been terrible without him. I didn’t like the fact he called Garcia gay, but its not the end of the world. McNabb should take just as much blame as T.O. should for that breakup. Guy is a great football player, and great person outside of it(i’ve met him, and he is a great gentleman, patrick willis-esque).

I agree to a point...

After Jerry left, TO stepped in big time and as far as I know, still holds the single game rec. record of 20. That says a lot about his abilities. But, it’s his antics on the field and the way he believes himself to be of more import than the team as a whole.
Every player must understand, that as talented as they are, they are simply a cog in the machine. And if 1 cog gets out of whack…then the machine fails.

I don't think this comparison is valid

Marshall has problems in Denver because he’s way underpaid, and more importantly, he’s had to go through the Darrent Williams situation. Dude died in his arms, if you don’t remember, as a result of probable gang violence – basically his best friend. Now that he’s testified in the trial he’s probably still fearing for his life in Denver. All this, and he still sets single-game reception records. The guy’s a beast, and if finances permit it I would definitely trade our 2nd/4th or maybe our #17 for him.

by coachtheus on Apr 8, 2010 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Not here....

I am truly sorry that he lost his friend. And for the record….No…I am not one of those mindless pions that believes that famous people shouldn’t go ouot and enjoy there success like everyone else. Be it at a nightclub, auction, or out for dinner with their families without fear of being irritated by fans. While on the field they owe us their deadlevel best play. Off the field, they owe us nothing.

However, in the case of Mr. Marshall, if he has issues with his contract, there are better, classier ways of handleing that situation. He could wait for the contract to expire, or simply play his way out of it. Better still, he could have his agent let management know how he feels. But, to consistantly be a malcontent, just because you have contract issues, doesn’t give you Carte Blantche to wreck the team.

If he fears for his life in Denver, I doubt there is an owner in the league that would deliberately hold a guy in an area that he feels mortally uncomfortable in. At that point, I think it would be the Players Unions turn to step in and protect not only the Shield, but, the player as an individual. Contract or no contract. Remember, all contracts are written by lawyers, and if one thing I know holds true, there is no contract that can ever not be gotten out of.

As for the asking price….way too much. for just 1 player. Now a 2nd this year and a 4th next yr……maybe. I would have to make that conditional on his performance.

I'm on the fence on this one...

For one to have Marshall, Crabtree, Davis, and Gore would put Defenses on their heels since the start of the season… who do you focus on… This would make ANY QB look like a super star. I would give them a 1st rounder… they never specified what year… 1st round draft pick for 2011 would work… we’d be a playoff team and would have a low pick anyways.

But then we have to think about the future of this team, not only would we shell out for Marshall, but we have to consider that Willis, Davis and Goldson need to be resigned and make them a 49er for life (jury is still out on Goldson).

So this likely conundrum would have to be evaluated by the FO is this trade were to happen. I want to say Yes since the future looks promising either way.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
