My Any Topic Other Than Alex Smith Thread

If you're anything like me, you've had it up to and above the neckline with incessant bickering over Alex Smith. It's not that Smith isn't a divisive comment starter - he clearly is. It's not like there's nothing to say about Alex Smith - he has a particularly interesting history with the team. It's really just that, without playing another game, I don't see anywhere else for the Alex Smith conversation to go.

An opinion about Alex Smith is like an excuse, and excuses are like... well, you know the saying. Everybody has one. And everybody has a loud one, too. I bet you didn't know that part of the saying. What's frustrating me, though, is that any discussion about Alex Smith turns bad. It just doesn't end well. Somebody says Alex Smith is good, and somebody else eats their face off. Somebody cites stats to explain their opinions, and somebody else calls them a godless nerd. Then somebody else comes in and punches that last person. Then somebody else starts talking about "it". Then somebody else mentions Joe Montana. Then somebody else takes a poo. Right there. They just drop 'em and poo. It's ridiculous. And nobody is going to clean that up. We just cover our noses and pretend it's not there. We walk around in it. We drag it home with us. It's ridiculous.

It's gotten to the point where even if I talked about pokemon, I wouldn't even be called a nerd like I would in any normal place. No. I'll get a block paragraph calling me an idiot for thinking Alex Smith is better than breloom. Which is ridiculous. Because breloom sucks. It sucks worse than Alex Smith. But somebody is going to argue about it. How is that even possible?

And it would be easy if there was one clear group that was right. But there isn't. Let me explain:

Group 1: Alex Smith has always had the tools and he's finally turning into the great quarterback we drafted him to be.

You know, he has always had the tools to succeed, and he does appear to have improved significantly. It's a distinct possibility that he'll continue to do that.

Group 2: Alex Smith is clearly capable of being a good quarterback. It's unlikely that he'll ever be great, but I've seen enough to think he's going to be pretty okay.

You know, he is clearly capable of being a good quarterback. It's definitely a safe bet to say he'll never be great, but he's had enough impressive outings to give a fan reasonable hope.

Group 3: Alex Smith is clearly capable of being a good quarterback, but he's been in the league for five years and he's still making the same boneheaded mistakes that a good quarterback doesn't. I'm not hopeful at this point.

You know, you have a point too. We have seen some good things out of Smith, but he's also a five-year veteran who sometimes just looks lost out there. Maybe he just won't figure it out.

Group 4: Even blind squirrels find nuts. Alex Smith has been in the league long enough to prove himself, and he still sucks. He doesn't command the pocket, he throws too many interceptions, and he just doesn't have "it".

You know, it's frustrating, but you make a good point. By this point in their careers, most players given the chances that Smith has had have turned the corner. They're more accurate. They throw fewer interceptions. They don't take a DoG per quarter. They command the huddle. They make a team rise above itself. Smith hasn't done any of these things. Why should we just give him the benefit of the doubt?

So that's it, then. You're all right. You all make good points. You all make sense. We know what we've seen from Alex Smith. We know what we hope to see. We know what we expect to see. And we know what we might see. We know. We know. We do. We know already.

We won't get anywhere else with this conversation until we actually see games played in 2010.

We won't get anywhere else with this conversation until we actually see games played in 2010.

We won't. I'm tired of it.

If you're tired of it, too, that's what this thread is for. We're going to spend the remainder of this thread talking about ANYTHING EXCEPT FOR ALEX SMITH.

Anything at all. Do you like knitting? I don't know the difference between a purl stitch and my left foot, but I'd love to learn as long as I don't have to talk about Alex Smith. I mean, you get the idea. I'll take any topic at this point. Baseball. Vernon Davis. Batman. Music. Trains. Women's pro billiards. Drywall. Your bobblehead collection. Your favorite moderator. Anything. Anything. Dear God, anything except for Alex Smith.

The only other rule to this thread is that if you DO talk about Alex Smith, you will get a facepalm image in response to your comment. I have two pictures of me doing facepalms. Some guys on this board have entire Gigs dedicated to facepalm images. Talk about Alex Smith and you will get at least one of them. Don't do it. Don't test me. I'll cut you.
