Will James reportedly agrees to terms with 49er

Fooch's Note: While this is not a monster signing, given the 49ers relative lack of depth at cornerback means this could be an intriguing signing. James will be battling with Karl Paymah and Keith Smith for Marcus Hudson playing time. The team added Phillip Adams, but I see him probably ending up on the practice squad.

I feel good about this. Another Coach Sing "smash mouth" guy who's not a bad back up CB option.  The D is coming together! Although I wouldn't mind seeing another DE pass rusher in case the DE spot opposite Smith becomes a weakness. Other than that, baring injuries of course, the defense should be in good shape, ya think?

Where are our other weaknesses on defense and offense that you think should be filled or supplemented by signing a veteran before the season starts? Who else would you like to see us pick up?

By the way, I became a Van fan today. Did you see those returns on the video post? Holy Creeps! This kid is the second coming of. . . Kory Sheets!  . . . Seriously, I have a good feeling about that kid -- Van I mean!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

True

But he CAN drop down into the slot and man cover receivers very well.
I hope Taylor Maykeyoucryifyoucomeoverthemiddle (too much?) can develop his man cover skills.

William James ranked #13 CB by CBS

13th ranked CB in the NFL by CBS…of course, they have Darrelle Revis at #17, and Nnamdi Asomugha at #159, so take that for what it’s worth.

nothing

if they have Asomugha at #159…is that from his rookie year? Still too low

Just a thought on CBs

I think most of us can agree that Clements has been a bit of a disappointment, given how much we’re paying him. Could part of his subpar performance be because of the pressure of being, and being paid like a #1 CB/? Now that Spencer has stepped up as the #1 CB, can this be Clements’ year to shine as a #2? If he can be above average as a 2, Brown as our solid nickel back, and one of the rookies can take on the #4 role, then I’d be a lot more confident about the CB sitiation.

by Rep the Bay on May 5, 2010 7:50 PM PDT reply actions

Clements

His problem is that he doesn’t have the speed he used to have. He is old for an NFL player and th receivers are fast and big. What Nate CAN do is man cover a receiver for about 3 sometimes 4 seconds very well. After that he loses them and if they are going deep he can’t keep up forever becuase of the speed issue. Our pass rush was not very good at times often giving the opposing QB as much as 5 to 6 seconds to throw.
Everyone remember the Giants Superbowl team? They didn’t have very good cover corners but they didn’t need to cover for longer than 3 seconds max. A good pass rush makes the secondary look much better.

by crumpedup15 on May 5, 2010 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

This is a team game as we seem to forget

If Clements can cover a wide receiver for 3-4 seconds he is doing his job well. What he didn’t have behind him was the effective free safety that could help out on a deep route—-think Mark Roman. With a decent pass rush, which I think we have now, and a decent deep FS, which we do have now, I think we will be very pleases with Clements this year. And he is still one of the best CBs in the league on run coverage.

by seafood lover on May 6, 2010 7:47 AM PDT up reply actions

We don't have a deep safety just yet. The FS can't cover both sides of the field.

SS was the issue in coverage.

I'm really not on that bandwagon

I’m fine with Nate. Big contract free agent CBs hardly ever live up to fans expectations. He’s a legitimate apart of the defense and CBs aren’t easy to replace.

this is that way i see it playing out.

Releasing or trading Michael Robinson. Keeping LeRoy Vann as a special teamer.

Corner back depth
1. Nate Clements
2. Shawntae Spencer
3. Tarell Brown
4. William James
5. Karl Paymah

James had a real solid season for the Lions in 2009, starting 14 games recording 74 tackles- 15 passes defended-2int-td

Not bad for a 4th corner.

I agree, I’d like to see Dre Bly back with the 49ers. He had a swagger that was appealing — not obnoxious like TO, but just out there having fun (minus “the play”). I think he helped the other 10 guys stay loose, and I remember a few 3rd down play he made where I really felt he came through big time.

Meanwhile, other than Dre, who else is out there that you might want to see us pick up? Is Pitts out of the question now? Do we really feel the other guard spot is a lock? I don’t.

And what about Greg Ellis? Over-kill? Can he play DE? If so, wow, I think that could fill a weakness. Who else? (Any QBs out there? — only kidding. :) )

We could be looking at one in each position for those first two

Or maybe going NT in 3rd/4th. There aren’t a lot of NT type prospects it seems out there (as usual). Glancing about here’s what I see on the way way early NT front:
Jerrell Powe – far and ahead the top NT prospect could be gone by the time we pick
Kendrick Ellis, Hampton – Could end up 2-3 round or maybe go to 4th.
Phil Taylor, Baylor – Weight problems and such – could go late 3rd to early 5th it looks like about now.
two guys to keep an eye on this season in college. Anthony Gray, Southern Miss, Lawton Scott Ole Miss.

If by some freak of luck we were able to get someone like Ras Dowling with our first and Jerrell Powe in the second then we should thank the football gods but even Kendall in the 3 or 4th would be good. I might try to get a chance to see him in some games this year.

Franchising Aubrayo was arguably the best way to make sure he got a good look and not risk losing him altogether. I still think he can and may very well get a two or three year deal, but I think the coaches just want to make sure RJF or someone else won’t do something to mess up the program.

On the o-side

we need in my opinion a veteran presence at the wr position one that knows what to do when crunch time arrives, also on the D-side I am in favor of resigning Walt Harris, since he has done a pretty good job covering the wr’s on the opposite side, and to say he is injury prone considering he was out only last year with a bad break for him.

by Lyken84 on May 6, 2010 12:06 AM PDT reply actions

This

And personally I don’t think injured players should be cut (or not resigned I suppose) until we know whether or not they are going to be the same player again. Certainly Walt Harris is old, but he’s been old for the past few years. Even though it gets more and more likely that he’ll show signs of his age as he gets older, until we know he can’t do it anymore (i.e. we see him in camp and it’s obvious he’s not good enough to be on the team) we should keep him.

Hey Fooch II

Wondering why you think Phillip Adams will end up on the practice squad? All I’ve been able to find out is that he’s from a very small school with almost no useable tape to review. Also, he’s good size, fast with an aggressive streak. Anything else you could share would be appreciated.

by Jaxson876 on May 6, 2010 6:30 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Adams

He certainly could make the roster, but it depends on what the team is looking for from the veterans they’ve brought in at cornerback. Three spots are locked up (Spencer, Clements, T. Brown). That leaves one or two CB spots at most and I don’t know if a 7th round pick is gonna be able to crack the 53-man roster at this point. It’d be nice if he did, but we’ll see.

I think Patrick Stoudamire has a better shot than any of the other three guys. But I will need to see Adams play first obviously before I can confirm that prediction.

We all now we have good CB’s not great ones. This is why I think good game planning with our hard hitting safetys is going to be a fun thing to do and see. I can see it now…. CB’s let the WR’s run the post over the middle and BAMMMMMMM Mays or Goldston knocks them out!!!

This is giving the team the same thing they were looking for in Dre Bly last year. He brings experience and is coming off a productive season. Despite his age, if he can play at that level this year, you might see him challenging for more than just the #3 CB spot.

Either way, I think this will make me more comfortable about our corner situation this year.

Only a first

"Singletary Football". To me, Singletary Football isn’t whether it’s on the ground or in the air. It’s about execution, discipline, and the mental toughness that will help predicate success.

With the salary that he's owed?

no thanks.

I was right, you were wrong.

It would have to be a re-negotiation done in regards to that ridiculous salary.

why the heck did they ever do that deal with him?

I hate big time deals to CB’s. You’re never going to get your money’s worth.
