Do you love an NCAA team like you do the Niners?

So, I was reading Drew's post about next year's crop of running backs.  (Great post, by the way).  I went through the list, trying to remember which of these backs I had or had not seen, and how good they were.  Then, I came upon Noel Devine.  I then noticed he was the only player listed I didn't need to look at his stats or video.  I instantly could click on the response button and state what I thought about Devine.  The point is, every time we have any kind of post about next year's stars, the draft, or anything involving college players, I always step up to the plate for my Mountaineers.  I did it for Pat White and Jarrett Brown, and I'll do it for Devine.  Anytime I see people talking about them, I try to chime in with what I know and love:  WVU football.  I love my 49ers, have since a kid, and will as long as I live.  But, they are not my only football love.  Being from the state, we live and breathe WVU football (save for the few Marshall fans) all over the state.  There are no other colleges.  There are no pro teams in any sport.  WVU is us.  And we love them.

Every time I talk about WVU to people, it puts me in the mood to watch highlights of WVU, it's players, and everything I love about them.  I was just wondering if anyone else cared about an NCAA team as much as we do the Niners.  Does anyone else love a particular college as much (or more) than you love our 49ers?  If so, chime in with what team you love, how long/why you love them, your favorite players, greatest rivals, fondest memories, or whatever comes to mind.  Give us thoughts, stats, videos, whatever.

And in case you didn't hear me say it before, GO NINERS (And Go 'Neers!!!)

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

NO I DON"T

"Singletary Football". To me, Singletary Football isn’t whether it’s on the ground or in the air. It’s about execution, discipline, and the mental toughness that will help predicate success.

You already know, but WVU all the way

It’s life in this state. No pro teams and no other major schools outside or Marshall gets everybody brought up on WVU football.

One day we can hopefully win that elusive National Title….

Until then it’s Country Roads and burning couches. Go Mountaineers!!

Best moment as a WVU fan

Granted, this should have been in the National Title game, but we forgot we had to beat Pitt at the end of the season. Regardless, this is what it is all about for me.

Pat White, Steve Slaton, Noel Devine, and Owen Schmitt was way too much for the Bradford led Sooners. Hope the Niners can treat him like WVU does in this video.

On a side note, I never condone the use of a Creed song in a video. Then again, I didn’t make it.

I'm a big Hawkeye fan

But nonetheless im pretty impartial in judgment. of players, I tend to think realistically when commenting of judging a player from my favorite team and not hyping them up to be something theyre not, like some fans do

but I don’t follow them online like I do the Niners. Grew up there, will always be my #1 college team, any sport.

I don't have any that I root for as hard as the Niners

But I’m a big fan of Boise State and BYU and follow them pretty closely. I have some BYU paraphenilia but no Boise State gear (their colors and logo look almost exactly like the Denver Broncos).

I was right, you were wrong.

GO AGS!!!!!!!!!

I’m a UCDavis fan (I first played, then coached, there). I’m pulling for Bakari Grant, a WR from Davis the Niners signed last week. Doesn’t have much of a chance of making the team, but I’m pulling for him, nonetheless.

smileyman, just in case you didn’t know this, current Boise State head coach Chris Peterson played, then coached at UCDavis, as did his predecessor at BSU, Dan Hawkins, now head coach at Colorado.

So did former Oregon head coach Mike Belotti, as did current Raiders assistant (or consultant, not sure which), Paul Hackett (Paul and I were teammates at UCD and coached together there, and Belotti played on the teams Paul and I helped coach).

After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.

by OldJock on May 9, 2010 4:16 AM PDT up reply actions

What about him?

He’s the head coach at Davis’ arch-rival, Sac State, he played at Univ Nevada Reno, has never coached at UCD… why bring him up in reply to my post?

Stanford Cardinal Football

Gotta Love the Cards!!!!

I’ve always followed the Cardinal, mainly because I had an older cousin who played there in the late 70’s/early 80’s as a backup LB. The fact that they now have a good coach again in Jim Harbaugh that is reviving the program makes it much easier to admit my loyalty to the Cards!!!

Go Stanford!!

I was a little upsat that Blount punked us for the Titans

As an avid Ducks fan, it hit me a little strange. But after I read about Anthony Dixon and how he grew up loving the Niners and was Honored to be a Niner, I decided that I would rather have a guy that wanted to be a Niner than a guy that didn’t. I WANTED WALTER THURMAN III.

by ericalancanty on May 9, 2010 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Too bad our division rivals got him.

And even worse that he ended up with Carroll.. someone who will probably run his career in to the ground before he even has a chance.

That's how it is in Oklahoma too...

No pro team, so the Sooners are it for the folks who live there. I went to a private NAIA university in oklahoma city and we didn’t have a football team, so I became a HUGE Sooners football fan while I lived there for 5 years. I actually like them from the time I was a kid too. Bosworth was awesome, I dont care what anyone says… and there is no way he was a bust just because Bo Jackson ran him over one time.

Well kinda...

2 years… he blew his shoulder out and was forced in to retirement. He had previously had about 20 surgeries before that. But if you meant solid for those two years, yeah, he was very solid. Never really had a chance to blossom in to any kind of career.

I'm a long-sufferer

I used to love University of Hawaii football just about a much as the Niners. They had their time in the limelight three years ago in the Sugar Bowl, but got their a$$es handed to them by Georgia. It’s been kinda downhill ever since. Although they did get to a bowl game the next year against Notre Dame and got spanked again on their home field (that was a tough one for me because I love ND too). They just barely missed being in one last season. They had to get beaten in the final game by Wisconsin (Thanks Chris Maragos!)

Not even close.

There are no NCAA teams that come even close. I like Notre Dame and Cal but I can’t possibly campare that to my love of the 49ers.

When I was a kid I had an uncle that took me to alot of A’s games and I was in love with them. It was all about the A’s and Niners. But when I stopped going to games I became less interested. I’m sorry but IMO baseball is just not nearly as much fun to watch on TV. Also, the fact that there are sooooo many games each season makes it a little harder to fallow.

The bad thing about this is I will become depressed if there is a lockout in 2011. Seriously I might turn to hard drugs. But I guess that will be my chance to fall in love with a college team.

I can't wait for Mango's sig to say "0 days to go".

by madmatt on May 10, 2010 11:25 AM PDT reply actions

none as much as I love the Niners

obviously I pull for my alma mater, UVA, but the football program there is pretty mediocre, and they’re never on TV out here, so I can’t get very into it. Also, no SBNation blog (boo). So the last few years I’ve been getting more and more into Cal football – I did grow up in Berkeley after all. And then I also sort of root for Washington since I went to grad school there. So after the Niners I would say it’s UVA as my favorite, followed by Cal, then Washington.

I’m hoping this coming season I’ll be able to see more UVA using ESPN 360 or ESPN3 or whatever it’s called.

The University of Texas Longhorns!

I should preface this by saying that my parents and all my other family are from San Fran. However, my dad was in the military so I had to move around a lot. But no matter where I was, my dad taught me that the Niners (and Giants and Sharks) were all I needed. And I listened.

However, the last place we moved before I graduated high school was Texas. I got a lot of crap for wearing my lucky Niners and Giants caps (still do. Damn Cowboys and their fans…..). My first choice of universities was Cal (like I said, my family’s from the Bay) but I didn’t get in. UT offered me a scholarship and I took it.

Now, I love UT because I made a choice to go there and it was a great choice. But the Niners will always have my heart because it wasn’t my choice. It was my dad’s and his dad’s before his, and my uncles and my cousins. It’s family, basically. I look back and see me moving every 3 years, with no place to call my own, but then every fall, I’m a NorCal kid. I have a home in Candlestick (metaphorically). That why I’ll always love my Niners more than my Longhorns.

Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

… Boomer Sooner! This year is the year the Sooners take the Red River Rival Game!!

"I'm blessed..... Thanks, God bless" ...hey, it worked for Tim Tebow.

by Drew Kerr on May 13, 2010 2:00 AM PDT up reply actions

And "Hook 'em Horns!" to you too, sir!

Haha, it’s alright. I have much less of a problem with the Sooners than the Aggies (except Switzer. Dear God, I loathe Switzer). OU puts out some great players (well, and some not so great, but I suppose every university does). I love watching Peterson play and I think Bradford is a very likeable, squared-away dude. But he’ll soon find that getting smacked by Brooks, Lawson or Justin Smith is a lot different from a corner blitz. All that being said, Muschamp finally getting his type of players on D and Gilbert coming into his own? They should rename it the Burnt Orange River. Too bad Earl Thomas went to Seattle. That was sad.
