49ers getting some Fantasy respect? Or not?
Last year was my first time playing Fantasy Football and I had a BLAST with it. While I enjoyed managing a team, it was always a struggle not to go pick up 9ers just because they were 9ers and I liked them. There was also a side argument I had with my brother. He contends that playing FFB equates to cheering for another team other than his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers...but that's a different discussion.
So I was watching NFL network "Top 10" this weekend (Joe Cool is the #1 "clutch QB" - like we needed a show to tell us that) - and saw the fantasy scroll in the crawl. I saw Frank Gore as the #5 RB and was like WHOA! That's awesome... finally getting some respect!!! Saw Alex Smith ranked #15 (though as you see below he's fallen - or FFTB hasn't updated) and VD is ranked #4 in his position.
All tolled, there are 4 players ranked in the top 10 of their positions, and 7 49ers ranked in the Top 200 overall, which is above the statistical mean of 6.25 (200 top, divided by 32 teams).
I thought I would post their current positions here (pulled from the FFToolbox.com Top 200 list) The first number is their overall ranking. The (number) is their ranking at their position. Players without a first number did not make the Top 200 overall. Defensive players ranked by position for IDP leagues.
5 (5) - Frank Gore
73 ( 4 ) - Vernon Davis
83 (32) - Michael Crabtree
144 (66) - Josh Morgan
167 ( 8 ) - San Fran Defense
178 (79) - Jason Hill
183 (22) - Alex Smith
(21) - Joe Nedney
(17) - Ted Ginn (ranked as Returner)
(7) - Dashon Goldson (DB)
(1) - Patrick Willis (LB)
(11) - Justin Smith (DL)

Frank the Tank is a PPR beast
Last year Crabtree was a good bye week backup. This year he would be a good WR3. I think The Duke (VD) should be the #1 fantasy TE.
San Fran defense should be ranked top 5
I’ll agree with the VD ranking—other TEs will get more yards than him probably, but he’ll get more TDs. He may end up with over 1000 yards receiving this year though.
5th overall RB might be a bit high for Frank
32nd ranked WR is too low for Crabtree
66th WR is probably right for Morgan
22nd ranked QB is too low for Alex. He did better than that last year and has more weapons this year (though maybe they’re figuring that the passing game will be hurt because of an improved running game).
Justin Smith is the best 3-4 DE in the league and one of the top 5 DL in the league
Dashon Goldson as 7th ranked DB is probably too high
They’ve got Patrick Willis’ ranking right.
Ted Ginn will get you major points on return yardage alone—I plan on drafting him solely for that reason.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Not sure...
..my league give return yardage any points… will have to check it. I had Josh Cribbs last year and he scored a couple times of returns.
If your league gives points based on total yardage
then it doesn’t matter how that yardage is obtained.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
We use Yahoo's league...
and I am not sure on return yards but will check when we start getting the league rolling. I’m not the commissioner of it, so I can’t check it…
NFL.com ranks Crabtree at #18 WR....
….and VD at #3 TE.
It matches Frank Gore’s #5 RB rank, doesn’t rank Nedney in the Top 24 (where their ranking stop), matches the D ranking at #8, and lists Alex Smith as the #18 QB.
He's not who he used to be.
He’ll do well when Vincent Jackson is out though.

Well that's because we know he'll likely exceed last year's numbers
A lot of football fans think 2009 may have been a fluke.

Unless they give points for QB pressures
Justin Smith isn’t good in Fantasy.

Well he does well in tackles
but yeah, you’re right.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Crabtree, Gore, Davis, and Smith will all be good fantasy players. Smith will be a solid starter.
Black Sand Ninja!!!
Well if Nolan was still in Denver I’d worry about them.
Philadelphia could be tough
GB could be tough
Other than that, no, we really don’t play any elite defenses.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Smith played well against GB
and its not the same Philly this time around
I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

My hope is to pick up Smith as my QB2
I play in a league that will probably have a max of 12 teams, so we’ll all have some phenomenal talent… Guessing I can pick up Smith as my backup at least…
Hell, you might be able to get him off the waiver wire.

Probably right...
Last year I had Drew Brees and Carson Palmer… another guy had Big Ben and Tom Brady… Another had Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre….
small league = ultra-talented super teams
I had Brees and Palmer at QB, both Steve Smiths WR (Crabtree on bench), Ronnie Brown and Michael Turner at RB, Owen Daniels and Brent Celek at TE and my Defense was INSANE. I had Charles Woodson, Bernard Pollard, Darren Sharper, Justin Tuck, Andre Carter, DJ Williams, Brian Cushing, David Harris, Chad Greenway…
Oh… and Sharper and Greenway were on the bench the last part of the season….
I feel the same way
Assuming you’re talking about small leagues….

Michael Fabiano gives us some respect too....
I probably should have done some research and compiled all this for the original post, but here’s what Fabiano has to say:
“Michael Fabiano: Let’s start with Frank Gore, who has the potential to record 1,700-1,900 scrimmage yards and 10-plus touchdowns as the team’s best offensive weapon. He also has a very favorable schedule, which just adds to Gore’s first-round value. Vernon Davis isn’t going to duplicate the 13 touchdowns he scored last season, but he should post 800-900 yards and seven to nine scores. Anything less and he’ll be a disappointment. Michael Crabtree is a high-end sleeper with 1,000-yard potential, and there’s no reason he can’t score six to eight touchdowns. Alex Smith has a chance to post nice numbers for owners — around 3,500 yards and 20-22 total touchdowns — based on a favorable slate of games and the load of talent around him.”

I don't see why people think that VD will suffer a drop off in production
If anything, another year with Alex Smith should help him break the TD record (for TEs)

I believe
that the thinking is that Alex will be more comfortable with his other targets (namely Crabtree), and that Gore will also be more effective which will limit the opportunities for a VD/Alex Smith hook-up.
I don’t agree with that—so far the OTAs seem to be showing that it’s still a potent hook-up.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Yeah, I don't agree with that
Crabtree will get more targets, but the guy that will likely suffer from that is Morgan.
Gore will always catch around 50 passes a season so that leaves a lot of targets for VD.

The 49ers D should probably be #1 or #2
They were #1 last year.

ESPN and NFL
People “rank” them really low because they’re the 9ers.
But look up the point totals from last year and you’ll see the 49ers are in the top 3 in nearly every scoring system.

I have only played 1 year and it was an IDP league
so I never bothered with overall D rankings… I was highly interested in individual players though!
