Madden 11 Player Rankings Released: 49ers get no love

Yesterday some early Madden 11 rankings were leaked and there are a few surprises amongst the obvious choices. Being as it's an indicator of how well a team is respected I thought I'd highlight a few of the top spots and their rankings, as well as some notable absences (from a 49er perspective).

Top Players
Chris Johnson RB - 99
Patrick Willis MLB - 99
Darelle Revis CB - 99
Jared Allen RE - 99
Drew Brees QB - 99
Peyton Manning QB - 99
Ryan Clady LT - 98
Adrian Peterson HB - 98

The only exception I would take to that top list is Adrian Peterson and that's simply due to his fumbling issues. Otherwise it's a pretty solid list.

Join me after the jump for position-by-position rankings

Star-divide

Top Quarterbacks:

Drew Brees - 99
Peyton Manning - 99
Tom Brady - 95
Aaron Rodgers - 94
Phillip Rivers - 94
Brett Favre - 92
Tony Romo - 90
Matt Shaub - 89

This is a very interesting list to me. I wouldn't rank Aaron Rodgers as a top 5 QB in the league, nor would I put Matt Shaub in there as the 8th best quarterback in the league.

Top Running Backs:

Chris Johnson - 99
Adrian Peterson - 98
Maurice Jones-Drew - 96
Steven Jackson - 95
Frank Gore - 93
DeAngelo Williams - 92
Ray Rice - 90
Michael Turner - 90

It's nice to see Frank Gore get a little love. I'm not sure about the rankings for Michael Turner. Is he really the 8th best running back in the league? I know Madden doesn't like rookies but CJ Spiller has to get some love.

Top Fullbacks:

Tony Richardson - 94
Lousaka Polite - 91
Leonard Weaver - 90
Le'Ron McLain - 90
Lawrence Vickers - 89
Ovie Mughelli - 88
Madison Hedgecock - 86
Mike Carney - 85

I'm not familiar enough with the full backs to have much commentary other than ot say that I agree with the top 4 picks.

Top Wide Receivers:

Andre Johnson - 98
Larry Fitzgerald - 97
Brandon Marshall - 96
Reggie Wayne - 96
Randy Moss - 95
Roddy White - 93
Steve Smith - 92
DeSean Jackson - 91

It's hard to argue this list though I'm disappointed that Crabtree apparently didn't earn higher than a 90 on the rankings.

Top Tight Ends:

Tony Gonzalez - 98
Jason Witten - 97
Vernon Davis - 96
Antonio Gates - 96
Dallas Clark - 96
Heath Miller - 90
Chris Cooley - 89
Kellen Winslow - 89

This is an interesting list. I'd rank Davis the equal of Witten, and I'd rank Clark better. I do think VD will break the TE scoring record this year.

Top Left Tackles:

Ryan Clady - 98
Jake Long - 96
Joe Thomas - 95
Michael Roos - 95
Jordon Gross - 95
D'Brickashaw Ferguson - 91
Jammal Brown - 91
Bryant McKinnie - 90

Hard to argue with this list.

Top Left Guards:
Steve Hutchinson - 97
Logan Mankins - 95
Ben Grubbs - 94
Kris Dielman - 93
Carl Nicks - 91
Eric Steinback - 91
Alan Faneca - 91
Todd Herremans - 89

I'd debate Alan Faneca's position on that list. He's lost a step or two to age and I don't see him being that effective. I'm also upset about Madden's rookie bias because Mike Iupati should definitely be scoring higher than the 84 ranking he received.

Top Centers:

Nick Mangold - 97
Andre Gurode - 92
Jeff Saturday - 92
Shaun O'Hara - 91
Matt Birk - 91
Rryan Kalil - 90
Jason Brown - 89
Dan Koppen - 88

I think it's criminal how badly Eric Heitmann is underrated.

Top Right Guards:

Jahri Evans - 98
Chris Snee - 96
Leonard Davis - 89
Davin Joseph - 88
Brandon Moore - 88
Bobbie Williams - 88
Harvey Dahl - 87
Jake Scott - 85

I don't know enough about right guards to make much of a commentary.

Top Right Tackles:

Jonathon Stinchcomb - 90
David Stewart - 89
Damien Woody - 89
Jeff Otah - 86
Jared Gaither - 86
Vernon Carey - 86
Ryan Harris - 85
Eric Winston - 85

It's hard to argue with this list. Hopefully we'll see Anthony Davis' name up here in Madden 12. He got a 75 ranking from Madden 11.

Top Left Ends:

Robert Mathis - 95
Jason Tuck - 92
Richard Seymour - 92
Luis Castillo - 88
Antonio Smith - 87
Calais Campbell - 86
Shaun Ellis - 86
Ray Edwards - 85

It's criminal that Justin Smith isn't here. In my mind he's one the top 5 DE in the game.

Top Right Ends:

Jared Allen - 99
Dwight Freeney - 97
Mario Williams - 95
Trent Cole - 95
Julius Peppers - 95
Haloti Ngata - 94
Darnell Dockett - 94
Will Smith - 90

The only one I disagree with here is Julius Pepprs. I think he's still riding his reputation and will see a significant drop in play this season.

Top Defensive Tackles:

Kevin Williams - 97
Vince Wilfork - 95
Jay Ratliff - 94
Kris Jenkins - 94
Shaun Rogers - 93
Casey Hampton - 91
Abrayo Franklin - 90
Randy Starks - 89

Can't really argue with this list either. It's nice to see some Aubrayo Franklin love.

Top LOLB:

Lamar Woodley - 91
Shaun Phillips - 91
Daryl Smith - 89
Thomas Davis - 87
Brian Cushing - 87
Julian Peterson - 86
Brian Orakpo - 85
Rey Maualuga - 85

Can't really disagree with this list. I think it's spot on.

Top MLB:

Patrick Willis - 99
Jon Beason - 96
Ray Lewis - 94
David Harris - 91
Barrett Ruud - 91
London Fletcher - 91
DeMeco Ryans - 90
Jonathon Vilma - 90

Nice to see P-52 acknowledge for being the best MLB in the game. I am a bit surprised to see Ray Lewis ranked third--I would've thought his reputation would give him extra points. Here's hoping Ahmad Brooks makes this list for next year.

Top ROLB:

DeMarucs Ware - 97
James Harrison - 97
Elvis Dumervil - 93
Lance Briggs - 92
Terrell Suggs - 90
Chad Greenway - 88
Keith Rivers - 86
Clay Matthews - 86

Hard to argue with this list.

Top Corners:
Darrelle Revis - 99
Nnmandi Asomugha - 98
Charles Woodson - 97
Champ Bailey - 95
Asante Samuel - 94
Jonathon Joseph - 93
Leon Hall - 92
Cortland Finnegan -92

Looking at this list and you can see how much the league has become a passing league. These are all outstanding CBs. I'd like to see Clements regain his form this season and make the list next year. I'd also like to see Spencer get more recongition--I think he's under-rated.

Top FS:
Ed Reed - 97
Anthony Bethea - 95
Darren Sharper - 94
Nick Collins - 93
Oshiomogho Atogwe - 92
Brian Dawkins - 90
Tenard Jackson - 88
Kerry Rhodes - 88

I can't argue this list at all, though I'm amused that Kerry Rhodes wasn't deemed good enough by his former team to keep his job yet he's ranked as one of the best free safeties in the league. Dashon Goldson thinks he's as good as these guys but he's got a long way to go to prove that.

Top SS:

Troy Polamalu - 97
Adrian Wilson - 96
Bob Sanders - 89
Brandon Meriweather - 88
LaRon Landry - 87
Tyvon Branch - 86
Jim Leonhard - 85
Bernard Pollard - 84

Oakland has a very underrated secondary. Between Asomugha and Branch they've got some of the best players at their respective positions.

Top Kickers:

Robby Gould - 95
Nate Kaeding - 95
Rob Bironas - 93
Ryan Longwell - 92
Stephen Gostkowski - 91
Sebastian Janikowski - 90
Jason Hanson - 89
David Akers - 89

I'm amused that Janikowski is by far the highest paid kicker in the league but Madden only ranks him as the 6th best kicker.

Top Punters:

Shane Lechler - 98
Andy Lee - 94
Donnie Jones - 94
Mike Scifres - 93
Mat McBriar - 92
Dustin Colquitt - 91
Brian Moorman - 90
Sam Koch - 86

The homerism in me says that Andy Lee is better than Shane Lechler but I can't get too upset about this ranking. The other punters I don't know well enough to have any commentary on.

Finally, here's the list of team rankings. The NFC West gets absolutely no love. Gamespot has a nice chart breaking down the difference in rankings from Madden 10 to Madden 11

Dallas 87
New York Giants 81
Philadelphia 80

They got a lot more love than they have been.

Remember, Vernon Davis started out in Madden NFL 2010 at a 78, maybe lower than that. Aubrayo Franklin was the lowest rated starting defensive tackle in the league, at 66.

Couple notes – Justin Smith is a RE in the game, and is probably around an 87-88—which would have been high enough to make the LE list, but not high enough for the RE list. Right ends are considered better because they go up against teams’ left tackles.

Wide Receivers- I’d have been shocked if Crabtree was 90+. He’ll be in somewhere around 86-88. Reggie Wayne is as overrated as always.

Tight Ends- I don’t see how Vernon isn’t on par with Witten. One thing that makes me mad is Vernon will probably have something like 88 speed like usual. They just think that tight ends shouldn’t be fast, even though in reality Davis should be pulling at least a 95 SPD rating on the game.

Offensive Line- The Heitmann bit is nonsense, absolutely nonsense. It’s worth noting that I’ll be pushing heavily to get him an increase to be at least the 11th best if he isn’t already.

Defensive Tackles- Aubrayo started last year at a 66 OVR in the game. He is getting a large amount of love, I’m happy with his rating.

MLBs- Brooks plays OLB, did you mean to include that bit about him on the other rankings? He has been at MLB in the game but should be listed at LOLB for this one.

Entire Secondary- Don’t count on the team getting any love here. They wont. Spencer has always been around a 72 which is criminal, and Clements won’t fare much better. I think Goldson will get some respect and be around an 84ish. Lewis has always been one of the games top SS, and I’m absolutely insulted that Pollard is ranked higher than him. Lewis used to pull an 88, and last season he only missed one game and played incredibly well, why the huge decrease?

ST- Andy Lee four whole overall points lower than Lechler? Bull.

I’m the ‘Team Captain’ on the official roster discussion for EA’s forums. So basically I’ll have a line of communication with ratings ‘czar’ Donny Moore. I’ll be pushing heavily to correct injustices.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

I agree with VD speed

he should be 93-95 range there is no TE in the league as fast as him let alone LB and DB’s. They really need to change that.

Crabs is where he should be.

Anybody see Iupati ratings. Dude is a best they gave him 83 from when they ranked the Rookies when they got drafted. He is higher than Anthony Davis and Davis was taken higher than him

please do, please do… I swear that the people who are responsible for making Madden, Madden (not the programmers or artists, but the designers) are not even NFL fans, nor even understand the game at all. (See my post below, I won’t call out there names but I grew up with one of them).

Yeah, Donny Moore, the ratings guy, doesn’t really seem to care about anything other than the Patriots. It’s hard getting him to respond to anything.

Give him the Sando treatment

Tell him your Pats fan hoping to beat every franchise in the SB but the 49ers never get there because EA doesn’t have the players ranked high enough.

I'll have to join you on the roster discussions

And help push for Heitmann because it is kind of ridiculous.

Looking at the last game, Goldson was the one player in the secondary that did not get a lot of love (74 overall I think). Spencer (79) and Clements (86) while not super exciting, is not far off. I like to use comparisons of how a player should be rated and looking at last year’s ratings, Spencer should be an 81 to match players like Domonique Foxworth, Ron Bartell, and Ricahrd Marshall. Clements is a toss up because there are guys higher than him who aren’t better (Trufant, Jammer, and Hayden) but others rated the same that are (Newman and Greer).

Hopefully, Justin Smith is an 89 like last year. And I agree that Crabtree should be somewhere in that range. He is one player I’m not worried about because he will get a lot of recognition during the season. And I agree that Reggie Wayne is overrated yet Andre Johnson is not a 99 overall why?

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 24, 2010 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Spencer got upgraded in the updates, yeah.

Andre Johnson should by all means be a 99 OVR wide receiver. That’s nigh-on insulting. I just noticed—Calvin Johnson isn’t on that list?! I’m sorry but that dude is AMAZING. Top five WR in the league definitely. What would have happened if Calvin Johnson was getting passes from Warner last season instead of Fitz?

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

I actually do think Pollard is better than Lewis

They’re basically the same type of player, but Pollard has less of an injury history

What I worry about the most is???????

Alex Smith. Moore (just like most “Experts”) give Smith a way too low rating. He had a better year than Matt Ryan, but just wait and see, he will be no where in sight when he is compared to Ryan on the game. It sucks when the computer makes you throw passes in the ground because the short accuracy rating is really low.

Overall rating is a 79, not bad, right in the middle.

by ericalancanty on Jun 24, 2010 2:19 PM PDT reply actions

He should get some respect. It’s worth noting that QB ratings on Madden aren’t really that worrisome because so much of it is user input for that, if you can throw without moving you should be alright. Still, I’d bet he’ll be about a 79-82.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.

by James Brady on Jun 24, 2010 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I knew two people who

worked on Madden in past (two years ago actually), they weren’t even football fans, let alone understood how the game worked but they were partly responsible for game play.

I will still play it however, like always, but would rather see the NFL drop the exclusive contract they have with EA and let other companies in on the action, because NFL 2k5 was the best football game of all time.

by danknerd49 on Jun 24, 2010 2:30 PM PDT reply actions

Do you really think Iupati should be better than an 84 already?

He hasn’t even played a single snap in the NFL. Plus, 84 is one of the best rookie ratings. Also, Matt Schaub may not be one of the best QBs in the league, but he had the most passing yards last season which is probably why he got some recognition last year. So I guess the question would be who do you rank better than Matt Schaub? Along with that, who would you say is the fifth best QB if Aaron Rodgers is not the fifth best?

And I can see Adrian Peterson being that high because of how the ratings system is set up that even if Peterson has a low carry, he has ridiculous strength and speed that keeps him high on the list. I think this discussion also goes for Vernon Davis because the game is set up to favor pass-catching TEs and Davis does not have the most reliable hands whereas Clark is a great pass-catching TE so that is probably why he is rated the same.

The two ratings I do not agree with are MJD and Cortland Finnegan. Finnegan, I just think he is hyped up and not that great. As far as MJD, I think he is great, but not better than Steven Jackson. MJD should be lower than Steven Jackson or raise Jackson to match MJD.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 24, 2010 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

I would have Schaub ranked as fifth best

Because had Daniels not gone down and Slaton developed a case of fumbleitis so bad they had to bench him his numbers would have been staggering.

Good playing by the dude with the controller....

….can make up for crappy rankings. I CRUSH the AI on Madden using the stock 49ers team. Of course, I upgrade players in franchise mode each offseason, but stick with the core for the most part.

Let’s also not forget that these are overall rankings, which may not be indicative of the individual skill rankings. For example, Crabtree might only be ranked an 85 or so overall, but might have a speed of 93, catch of 96 etc…. So it might actually take into account the players’ individual skills while not getting them the overall rating that scores a top 8 rank.

by StereoPete on Jun 24, 2010 2:49 PM PDT reply actions

Definitely.

But nobody can say there isn’t a clear disadvantage when playing online against someone of similar playing skills as you. I was smashing people online with the 49ers, but the second I played against someone who was about as good as me – and he was using the Steelers or someone like that, well the rankings became clear.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

by StereoPete on Jun 24, 2010 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Just be sure to prepare your playbook/hurry up offense

Keep the other player off balance when you first start.

And most importantly: NEVER abandon the run, even when you’re down. Run lots of counters when they least expect it.

Yeah that happens to me all the time

I “own” the Vikes, Boys, and Saints with the 49ers when they’re controlled by some average users.

But when there’s a guy that knows what he’s doing and is using a team like the Pats, my DBs get smoked.

They forgot Brett Favre, Troy Palomalu, and Larry Fitzgerald

He came out in Madden 09 in his Packers Jersey and followed that up by having a crappy season with the Jets. Troy Palomalu (madden 10) got injured last season. Larry Fitz’s wasn’t as drastic but he nearly stayed out of the game vs the 9ers due to a hyperextended knee.

I just hope the curse works on Brees when they face SF in Week 2! Is that a bad thing to ask for? For my team to get an upset win over the defending SB champs

Some of Eddie Bravo's stuff is good

The way he developed a system out of unorthadox positions especially. But the fact that he renamed plenty of tradition positions so he could speak in code to his guys at tournaments and that verbiage is now being espoused as the proper terms is pretty lame.

When Rogan said 'spider web' that first time

It about killed me. Rogan is a funny dude, but I think he’s a horrible play-by-play commentator. He is virtually always wrong on ‘what the guy is going to try and do’ and he frequently calls people by the wrong name, incorrectly identifies kimuras and americanas, and things like that. He’s supposed to be a brown belt in BJJ but he really doesn’t know his stuff, or at least can’t identify things under the spotlight. I know it’s a hard job. I thought Kenny Florian has done a fantastic job commentating lately. Side note on Florian, I hope he wins the title.. one of the best fighters to not win a title, methinks.

I think not being able to identify his stuff

Is as much a problem of the cage and him sitting right by it. As his lack of knowledge. He annoys me and gets firmly behind the ZUFFA party line but generally is somewhat knowledgeable. The cage ruins how well you can see from up close though. For all its problems the ring provides a better viewing experience.

Can't stand Kenny

He is giving the UFC a hummer the whole time while he broadcasts. His knowledge is fantastic but good god is that dude a homer. That’s my biggest pet peeve. The sport is MMA not UFC.

Jens Pulver is my favorite fighter/broadcaster. As far as a pure broadcaster I’d honestly give that to Bellator’s crew. They’re honest about their place in the sport and aren’t afraid to give due credit to other promotions. The Bellator crew calling for the fight between Eddie Alvarez and Strikeforce’s Melendez was a breath of fresh air.

Not 2007 Brady, but still top 10

Owen Daniels...

The injury hurt his Madden 11 rankings. I agree he’s a top-10 TE for sure…probably Top 5 if it weren’t for the injury.

He got benched by the Jets and he’s apparently one of the best safetys in the game? what is going on?

He got into an argument with coach Ryan

That is the reason he was benched, and that is the reason the Jets got rid of him.

I've learned not to take much from Madden ratings.

Sadly, it’s one guy who works for EA deciding what he thinks everyone is ranked and takes suggestions from posters on the Madden forum. I wish it was a board of people who spent 8 hours a day constantly studying stats and watching game film.

I’ve posted on those forums as well, and while I think that’s probably where Donny gets his best feedback, it’s kind of a ridiculous idea to have fans of each team rate their own players.

by Soulbrother16 on Jun 24, 2010 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s why they do team captains now. For instance my feedback last season, I had more decreases than I had increases when it all came down to it. Some fans are completely horrible, the Raiders fans on those forums are hilarious. Theres a lot more of those casual, trash-talking people on there ‘HAY Y U NOT RATE _ 99???’ but my point was that it is the best case scenario for ratings at this point.

So when the Niners take the West this season, hopefully the Madden 12 gives the Niners their much deserved love.

Compared to Crabs as an 84 that is bull.

DeSean was a 3rd reciever gimmick in a pitch and catch offense. He’s a damn good gimmick but matched up against #1s like he’ll see next year watch his production fall and watch Ginn become the new DeSean.

You don't know what you are talking about do you?

Watch some of his highlights. He lines up everywhere and runs by everyone. He may not be worthy of a 91 but he should be above 88. Give credit where credit is due.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 25, 2010 3:09 AM PDT up reply actions

he's fast

ok…I still don’t think he’s a 91. 88 would be as high as I could go. His speed would be like 95 but carry, btk, etc. would all be low.

He has 99 speed in the next game

you can see it in one of the videos that Jackson is the fastest receiver. With top speed, good hands, good route running, and probably 99 elusiveness like last year’s ratings, Jackson would warrant a pretty high overall rating. Since the game values speed, hands, and route running for receivers, he probably does come out higher rated than he should.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 25, 2010 6:58 AM PDT up reply actions

He started last season as a #2-3

behind Kevin Curtis and even with Jeremy Maclin. He’ll be their clear cut #1 this year getting manned up by guys like Revis instead of running through zones and just using his speed. He won’t be anywhere close to as good.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jun 25, 2010 6:23 AM PDT up reply actions

No he was a #1 last season

Kevin Curtis was injured all through last year’s training camp and through the beginning of the season so Jackson started as a number 1 and stayed a number 1.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 25, 2010 6:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Correction

Kevin Curtis was able to play at the beginning of the season after recovering in the off-season from sports hernia surgery. He started the first game as the #2 (Jackson #1) and got injured again in week 2 (did not start in week 2) with a knee injury and missed most of last season (only played in three games but only started the first game).

If he's moving around so much

then part of the time he has to be covered by the #1 corner right? And you say it like the Eagles are some kind of cheats moving their receivers around for better matchups. That is just absurd!

Same number of catches

with one less game played. But he raised his touchdowns from 2 to 9 and raised his average from 14.7 to 18. 6. He even had one 67 yard rushing TD. I’m just giving the guy respect because he does something right to rack up 1000+ yards receiving in 62 receptions.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 26, 2010 1:49 AM PDT up reply actions

QB play is an important factor as well

I never judge players by the TDs they score.

Look at Steven Jackson. He scored like 4 TDs last season, yet he’s still an amazing player.

He needs to haul in more passes.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"

by SportsChicken on Jun 26, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

but that does not answer to the fact that Jackson also raised his average to 18.6, which is really good for a starting receiver and racked up over 1000 yards receiving.

To go with those stats, he had 18 catches for 20+ yards, 10 catches for 40+ yards, 2 rushes for 20+ yards, and 1 rush of 40+ yards (67 TD). While you do not judge players by TDs, do you find it impressive that he had 6 TDs of 50 yards or more?

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 27, 2010 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I think in the case of an injury

all they can do is go off last year. You can’t speculate a guy get’s better or worse off injury. I suppose you could take last year and shave a few points off…but it’s just too hard to tell.

Well break down his ratings and game tape and tell us why he shouldn't be that high

don’t get hung up on overall because those can be deceiving like DeSean Jackson.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 26, 2010 1:52 AM PDT up reply actions

8 sacks allowed

That should tell you enough.

He thrived in a zone blocking scheme but got owned when the Broncos switched to power blocking.

There is no chance in hell that he’s the best LT in the NFL.
Top 10, yeah…but not No.1

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"

by SportsChicken on Jun 26, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I can see that

Sacks allowed is not everything. Like for instance, Jammal Brown was told by Sean Payton to hold whenever a guy is going to beat him to avoid the sack. Personally, I think both Joe Thomas and Jake Long are better than him. But I think Clady does have a unique combo of skills (excellent footwork) that could raise his overall stat to make him look like the best. But I do agree that he will come down this year. It should be noted that in two games, Tamba Hali got four of those sacks on Clady. If the Chiefs defense improves, Clady could give up more.

Like I said before, do not be deceived by the overall stat. Overall does not tell the whole picture in Madden. The way they set up overall favors certain areas for a specific position which is why a player like DeSean Jackson can be highly rated because top speed and elusiveness with great hands and route running make his overall better than he actually is.
