2010-2011 NCAA College Prospects: Cornerbacks
Author's Note: Last year, before I became a Front Page Author, I posted a few pieces on the top college prospects at the very beginning of the college football season for '09-'10. There are roughly 22 positions (11 on each side of the ball) to focus on. Each week, leading up to the very first NCAA Football Game for the '10-'11 Season, I will take a look at one of the positions. Each position will vary in the amount of players I cover. Number of players per position will range anywhere from 10-20 of the top prospects. I will be ranking them as to where I think they will be slotted in next years draft should they all enter. Mind you, these are just my opinions, but I feel that the rankings are going to be pretty close to the opinions of the rest of the Nation. I haven't seen any preseason player rankings yet, so it should be interesting to compare to once they come out.
Last week we finished up taking a look at all of the offensive positions. This week we will turn our attention toward the defensive prospects coming out. Believe it or not, and as long as it may seem away, the 2010-2011 Season is almost upon us. We are less than two months away (51 Days) until the Niners kick the ball off again. Sweet revenge against the Superbowl loser Colts would be a nice way to begin the year... preseason or not.
This week we're going to look at the cornerback position. There was much debate around Niners Nation this past offseason (pre-draft) in regards as to whether or not they needed to draft a corner fairly high. It seems as though the coaching staff and front office felt fine with the guys that were in place considering that they didn't draft a corner until the sixth round. Nate Clements and Shawntae Spencer are expected to be the starting corners but it remains a mystery as to who will be the nickel and dime package corners. This leads me to believe that next year the corner position may be a targeted area. So pay close attention to the guys that are listed below. One of them may be a San Francisco 49er next season.
After the break, we'll take a look...
1. RAS-I DOWLING | 6'2", 200 LBS. | VIRGINIA CAVALIERS - Had Dowling come out in this years draft, he may have been selected relatively high. However, considering that he returned for a final season in college, the odds are stacked in his favor to be picked first potentially. If he is not selected here, look for him to be selected as a top three cornerback in next years draft. (((Click Here For Highlights)))

2. PRINCE AMUKAMARA | 6'1", 200 LBS. | NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS - Like Dowling, Amukamara has a very good opportunity to put himself in position to get drafted on day one of next years draft. He has very good instinct and makes extremely exceptional cut to either break up passes or pluck them out of the air. Keep an eye on this young talented prospect. (((Click Here For Highlights)))

3. CURTIS BROWN | 6'0", 185 LBS. | TEXAS LONGHORNS - Some people feel that Texas Longhorn defensive backs tend to be overrated. As much as I hate to admit it, I believe that Brown is not a player who will be overrated coming out next year. Being in the spotlight at a big school like Texas, he will have every chance to shine and make the ESPN highlight reels. (No Highlights)

4. PATRICK PETERSON | 6'1", 211 LBS. | LSU TIGERS - In a way, I feel like this could be too low to slot Peterson but it was just really difficult to place him above the other three. In any case, Peterson is easily a top five prospect next year. He is fast, physical, great ball skills and could very well fit the mold in a physical with an "F" type of defense. 5. AARON WILLIAMS | 6'1", 189 LBS. | TEXAS LONGHORNS - Yes, there are two corners from Texas in the top five. This is not an error. Again, some feel that defensive backs out of Texas are overrated but there is a reason they earned the nickname of DBU. The Longhorns may have lost one of their best guys back there in Earl Thomas but the two defensive backs listed here could make up for the loss with another year of experience under their belts. 6. SHAREECE WRIGHT | 6'0", 185 LBS. | USC TROJANS - Wright was a defensive back under Pete Carroll last year and judging by the defensive back stats there, it seems as though there were more personal fouls than interceptions... hmmmm... anyhow, Wright (out from underneath the wicked wings of Carroll) should have a chance to shine now. I fully expect Wright to be a player that steps up to the plate and showcases his true talent. (((Click Here For Highlights)))

First thing I notice about most of the top CBs
They are all tall CBs. I don’t keep up with college football to know much about these guys, so I like these posts. I would like to see the 49ers go CB in the first and of the guys mentioned, Patrick Peterson sounds good if he is what you described.
However, that video on Amukamara does not make him look that impressive. I would like to see how he plays in press coverage. How is his tackling because that video has me questioning his tackling?

They need to replace Clements
and his under-achievement compared to what kinda dough he’s making.

I think smiley broke this down one time
Clements salary for the time being is fairly decent as is his level of play. His salary really becomes a problem in 2012(?).
Here's hoping 2010 is the end of our drought.
I've broken it down many times
no need to worry about Clements’ salary for another year or two.
I still voted yes on the poll because we do need to get younger at the position.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Thanks for the correction
He’s not overpaid now… But the kinda cash that’s coming he definitely hasn’t been at that level.

oh… a level that would befit the massive salary hes going to be getting. He hasn’t yet earned that cash I would say. He’s definitely not a lockdown corner.

There's no such thing as a lockdown corner in the NFL
and for the three millionth time Clements actually isn’t getting a “massive salary”. It made big news when he signed it but most of it he’ll never see.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
But truly how much is in bonuses? On what 11 and 12 million announced the next couple years.
I’m betting he’s getting at least 4.25M Guaranteed per year. Do you know what you can do with that kind of cash?
The first thing you can do is get a talented, high-round rookie who is cheaper, younger and with some luck, down the road, BETTER than what we got with Clements.

We have our future defensive stars taken care of
In Willis is locked up and Mays is on the rookie deal
We NEED to secure VD and have some room left over for a couple reasons. For that special free agent (Deion Sanders) that might come along and make all the difference in making us a champ… And for when, in my belief, Alex Smith goes absolutely thermonuclear this year. We can survive without Clements – We proved that last year. I like Nate but he needed to step up his game BEFORE the injury.
Another rookie that could be solid if not spectacular can be had on the cheap.

Revis still needs more game tape
I think Moss will school him this season.
Asomugha gives up plays here and there.
They don’t “completely” take out a certain side of the field, they just do a much better job of it when compared to other CBs.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Those are names
what does a lock-down corner actually do?
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
You can get a talented high-round rookie
and then in 4 years if you want to keep him you’ll have to sign him to a massive deal again.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
But what has Clements done for us in the last 2 seasons?
Sign a big deal. Have 1 very good year and then 2 meh years. That rookie if we are signign him to a massive deal after 4 years its because he’s one of the top corners in the league and he’s still young. Two things Clements has not been the last 2 years.

I would hope to avoid the first round when it comes to 3-4 OLB
There is a high bust rate for those players because not many of them can make the conversion. However, if the team does end up picking one in the first, I believe in this coaching staff because they know linebackers.
by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 25, 2010 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions
Yup
3-4 OLB are one of the worst picks to make in the first round. It’s hard for college DEs to make that transition, though it’s harder still for WRs to make the transition.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
You should do a post on positional value in certain rounds
because while it is hard for WRs to transition, the successful receivers from the first round turn out to be good-great receivers with long careers whereas first round RBs may have some success but because of the short life of an NFL RB, a first round pick is not worth the few years of production.
by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 25, 2010 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions
generally
If I can have any player in the history of the game… Despite how unimportant a great RB is compared to a HoF offensive lineman or Lawrence Taylor or the greatest QBs of all time. I still take a long hard look at Barry Sanders.
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jun 25, 2010 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions
The problem really lies in the first 15 picks
which are extremely over-valued. A guy who’s picked 20th overall won’t make all that much more than a guy picked 35th overall (a bit more guaranteed but he’ll probably have a longer contract too).
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
It's funny how that works too
but also puts extra importance for those early teams to choose a player that will improve the overall team so they do not consistently pick high.
by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 25, 2010 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I had been paying more attention to the cornerback prospects but I hadn’t noted that the top CBs are all so tall, that’s great.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
Personally I would rank Peterson 2 with Prince 3 and Brown 4
But this is a really solid list. I think CB will be our highest priority heading into the 2011 draft.
Here's hoping 2010 is the end of our drought.
And Ras one?
I agree I like Ras a heck of a lot. Did last year when there were possibilities of him coming out. He’s tall and big and while not overly fast he’s no slough foot either. From what I’m seeing/hearing around it sounds like most of the prognosticators (take that with it’s own pound of salt) have Peterson and Prince fighting for 1 and Brown and Ras kind of fighting for the two range but that’s more just the sway of current sentiment. It seems like a pretty good crop of CB’s this year. Maybe we could even get a CB in the first and go back to pick up a proect one in one of our lower rounds.
In general if we look at it we’re looking at this as far as what picks we have right now:
Rd 1, Rd 2, Rd 3, Rd 4 (ours), Rd 4 (Chargers), Rd 5 (ours), Rd 5 (I’m guessing this is what we’ll get comp though could only be a 6th), Rd 7 (ours), Rd 7 (Lions?) So that’s 5 picks in the top 130. Now off the top of my head I’d like to see us get some things like the following: CB, rush DE, rush OLB, NT, COP RB. That’s just a first blush overview of things that I see(feel) we need.
Sorry for the brain dump LOL

We definitely need a corner in the first two rounds, I prefer the tallest with most fluid hips and speed as a combo, so I want a lot.

Ras-I encompasses all of that.
If the Niners can land him I will be stoked. But any of the top five there should be solid.
"I'm blessed..... Thanks, God bless" ...hey, it worked for Tim Tebow.
We'd have to make a trade to get him.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
Agree with both of you LOL
Yeah probably he’s gonna go high but if the high feeling continues on Peterson and Da Prince then he might end up #3 and I would have no problem with him at that slot LOL. In fact as Drew noted any of them, Peterson, Prince, Dowling, Brown or Williams would be good pickups. All pretty much meet RLott’s criteria as well.

Well he's not that fast is he?
At least he doesn’t seem so fast to me on TV.

he's not lighting fast
Strengths: Incredible frame for a CB – More quick than fast, but has decent long speed – Shows good awareness in zone coverage – Very physical at the line, uses hands well – Great intangibles – Will support the run.
Weaknesses: Makes too many mental mistakes – His technique in his backpedal and transitions need to catch up with his athleticism – His good instincts may lead him to jump routes and gamble too much.
2009 Stats:
8 Passes Defensed, 3 Interceptions, 53 Tackles
Gimme 1 round!

Well he didn't look "elite" for long periods of time last year.
I have a very bad feeling about this kid.
Just feels weird.

That's Dowling
the big knock on him is he doesn’t bend his knees enough in his backpedal. ZOMG ITS THE END OF THE WORLD!
Gimme 1 round!

Two things
First, I think it’ll be interesting to see how Baalke deals with corners. I seem to recall McCloughan taking the position that corners took a while to groom and develop and thus it was better to get them off the FA market (see: Nate Clements).
Second, with that in mind, the labor situation could also play a role depending on who’s available and how much we’d have to pay for selecting a corner. If there is no rookie salary structure and we get up into the teens (the area to get these guys), 13-17 million guaranteed seems quite a bit for someone with little immediate value. Generally, at best you hope he can fill in as your nickle slot corner his rookie year and then take the jump into one of the starting positions by year 2. And as Smileyman noted is his post a couple weeks ago, scheme is more important than individuals in terms of getting the most value in terms of performance.
All that said, I wouldn’t mind a CB, particularly if it’s in the late first round. However I think you’d have to consider that the team could do better than just picking a CB because it’s a perceived “weakness” and that, if available, the FA market could provide better players at the position than someone we draft.
If you're picking in the teens
you’re looking at a contract with a total value of $10-17 million, not guaranteed money of that much. You might push it close to $20 million if you’re a QB.
As an example here are the 15th overall picks and their rookie deals for the past 5 years
2009—Brian Cushing. 5 years, $14 million. $10 million guaranteed plus another $4 million in incentives.
2008—Branden Albert. 5 years, $15.8 million. $9.2 million guarantee4d.
2007—Lawrence Timmons. 5 years, $12 million. $8 million guaranteed. Another $3 million available in incentives.
2006—Tye Hill. 5 years $10.2 million. (3 years later he was traded to the Falcons for a 7th round pick and then cut 3 games into the season)
2005—Derrick Johnson. 5 years $10.4 million.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Who will be an unrestricted free agent next year.
We could get a proven CB in free agency next year, who is available. Still think that they need to draft a guy early too.
I want Patrick Peterson.
He’s my 2010 Brandon Ghee.
Except he’s not really underrated.
