Quarterbacks or Cornerbacks...THAT is the question!

We've seen a lot of FanPosts (and even front page articles) here about the 49ers Quarterback situation.  I believe the consensus around here - and correct me if I am wrong - is that the majority of us are hopeful, but not overly optimistic about Alex Smith and his potential to be the QB of the future for us (for the record - I am a fan and believe he is).  As the numbers show in my FanPost earlier this year, I think he has a very good shot at stepping up to that role.... but I think we're all in a "show me" mode with him this year.

There have also been some discussions about our Cornerbacks and what is going to happen with them.  Nate Clements has played well from time to time and suffered injuries that have hampered his ability to contribute.  Dre Bly, Walt Harris, et al never really panned out for us either.  So here we are with the Pass Defense ranked 21st in the league, but not really making moves to improve our primary coverage.  As Maiocco states in his recent article about the 49ers CBs, that 21st ranking is misleading and when one examines the underlying stats, they will realize that we're actually pretty darn good.

I believe we went the right way in this year's draft for sure.  Each team only gets so many picks and we were blessed to have 2 first-rounders  this year, where the majority of rookies likely to be capable of starting right away are likely to be found.  We clearly needed to set up the O-line to protect whomever Mike Singletary decided to put under center for years to come.

I think that we've got a big question on our hands for 2011:  Barring a blowout year by Alex Smith and his clear establishment of himself as the "QB of the future" for our franchise, which way do we go in the 2011 draft?

From what I've seen and read, most of us believe we are solid on a number of fronts:  We have an awesome featured RB.  We have at least 1 awesome WR in Crabtree.  We have arguably one of the top 3 TE's in the NFL, and a very solid overall defense (Including the #1 MLB in the NFL IMHO).  Also from what I've seen, many (including me) believe that our next weakest position is CB.

Do we go with QBs for the 2011 draft if Smith only has a so-so or even "decent" year?  Or do we hold on and go after CBs?  Do we pick them up in free agency next year?   Does anyone know what QBs and CBs might be available as UFA's next year?

Just another thing to keep our minds sharp during the "dead zone" we're in.

I hear you...

…I am referring to “work out” as in the long term. I think we’re seeing that stability is a big advantage if our team has it, and a huge liability if we don’t. I’d love nothing more than to see us pick up some huge name UFAs next year…. Charles Woodson as a 9er anyone? (I don’t know where he’s at in his contract….just his name came to mind)

by StereoPete on Jun 29, 2010 9:14 AM PDT reply actions

As great as Woodson was last season

I would fear that age will catch up to Woodson (He’s already 34 years old). Even the season before last, he was only above average so it’s possible he could have some drop off next season.

But I’ve heard the Packers are trying to re-sign him so I don’t think he’ll hit FA anyway. FA CBs demand a lot of money (like Nate Clements contract) so it may be better to just draft a CB. I think it would be best to draft a CB in the first but I’m also hoping that Alex Smith has a decent enough season to not lose games for us. Plus, if we do draft a QB, I would want to invest in Alex Smith or a veteran QB for a year to allow the rookie QB to develop and not be rushed in before he’s ready. That will also give more time for the O-line to grow and become a solid O-line.

Huge name UFA's like....

Nate Clements? That’s the last huge name UFA we picked up at CB and like you said, it hasn’t worked out to better than a 21st ranking. I’d look to the draft for a guy who can start or significantly contributein his first season (1st round) and a guy who can start in a few years when Spencer begins to decline (3rd-4th round).

by 9thevolution on Jun 30, 2010 6:37 AM PDT up reply actions

yep

that was the old regime(s). We’re building this team from the inside out. This regime knows FA is only for that one or two guys that you can’t find on your roster or get in the draft (and still get all your other picks)

I didn't know how to vote

because we need a stud CB next year no matter what. Unless of course someone on our current roster just BLOWS OUR MINDS and become a Darelle Revis type corner (or close). Besides, we need good up and coming CB’s for the future when Nate is mid 30’s and Tae is early 30’s, injuries, etc. I know Edggy is going to get upset at me for mentioning the “i” word.

But if Alex for some reason came out and played like Bray Quinn…I’d be thinking, “hmmmm…Carr might be able to get us by for another year or two…how ready is Nate Davis? What’s in his head?” Then I’d think a little bit about at least a 2nd round QB.

But I think ultimately we need a 1st round CB in 2011 draft.

I think I'm with you about the CB.

I voted for “If Alex plays at least decent ball…” and I think we probably need CBs anyway.

Is anyone aware of Cbs entering FA that might be worth trying for? We’ve got a good bit of cap room (based on most recent cap).

by StereoPete on Jun 29, 2010 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I am hoping we will have a late 1st rounder in 2011 so it would be a good place to pick up a top CB

If the 49ers feel they need a different QB of the future, not for 2011, then a 2nd or 3rd rounder can be used for that.
I can actually see them going for two CBs or a CB and a DT in the first couple rounds if Franklin isn’t signed.

A good CB must be taken early in the draft

I read awhile ago that it is very hard to find a starting quality CB after the 2nd round, at least compared to other positions.

Dre Bly was one of our best corners last year

and he was playing for peanuts too.

When it comes down to it though I’d rather have the best QB in the league than the best CB in the league. A QB is involved in a far larger portion of the team’s plays than is a CB.

Sharper's a safety

And the reason he gets coverage is because he makes picks. He’s not that good a cover safety.

Sharper

is a great cover safety. One of the best. 9 ints He’s covering something.

by GMARCH on Jun 30, 2010 12:55 AM PDT up reply actions

No

He gambles which pays off in interceptions but he misses a lot of tackles and when the receivers he’s covering make a catch they average 17 yards after the catch, which means he also gives up big plays.

But it’s the INTs that people see and that’s why people think he’s a great safety. I wouldn’t want to have to rely on him to cover against a #1 WR.

by smileyman on Jun 30, 2010 7:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Then I'm surprised that you say that Sharper is not that good of a cover safety

Because looking at the numbers:

Thrown at 37 times for 13 completions for a total 221 yards + 95 total yards after the catch and 2 TDs allowed

So when he does allow a completion, yeah, he allows an average of 17 yards, but when he is only surrendering a completion 35.1% of the time and for only two TDs, I think he deserves the hype about his cover abilities. And while he should never be covering a #1 WR on his own, I would rely on him to double a #1 WR easily.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jun 30, 2010 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I was looking for a place in the thread to insert stats....lol

Thanks ZeroOneInfinity.

Their Cb is not top 5 maybe even 10.

Look up the completion percentage for Jabari Greer HERE. He was in top 5 among CBs, or opposing QB rating verse his coverage. But Porter gets the fame because of the big time interceptions. Same for Sharper as far as interceptions.

Just my 2 cents....

Barring Alex Smith turning into Peyton Manning (Which everyone here seems to think is going to happen…) I believe this could be Alex’s last year in a Niner uniform. dispite what “Samurai” Mike says: One thing that is for certain is he wants winners! True, many reports say that Smith is progressing well on the practice field. But, on the Game Field is where careers are made. Personally, I have made no bones about my disfavor for Alex. (Hey….sue me!) But, I think getting a CB for the Niners is a must. We already have a pretty decent, if not good defense. Getting a young, shut down corner is alot closer an endeaver than getting a “Franchise” QB. There just haven’t been too many of them in the recent past that have made that transition.
As for up coming FA QB’s we might look into, I think Baltimore’s Troy Smith would be a good pick. For one thing, he has NFL experience as he’s been in the league now for 4 yrs. so, it’s highly doubtful he’ll have that "Deer in the headlights appearance that plagues so many young QB’s comin in from the ccollege ranks. Secondly, he knows what it takes to be a winner. as the QB for Ohio State, he played in some rather memerable games. It’s not often that Jim Tressell coaches dog QB’s.
Third, as a former 5th rd draft pick, he won’t demand a huge contract. as of right now, he sits a measly 3rd on the Ravens Depth chart. And that’s simply because they just signed Marc Bulger (God only knows why….go figure) add to that, the Ravens also have John Beck formerly of Miami. Which gives them a rather stacked QB roster. I don’t think they would require too much in order to unlad one of their QB’s and with Joe Flacco playing so well….I really don’t see Troy getting too many looks as the stater.
I think the only thing stopping that would be folks thoughts of Troy’s injury history. Yet, all I remember is that his rookie season was shut down due to an injury that dropped his stack in the draft. But, during that season, Troy had surgery, and hasn’t been on the field to accumulate a ton of game wear either.
Outside of that, all the rest of the upcoming FA QB’s should be slightly less than mid-level and we should invest at worst a 2nd-3rd rd pick on one. I am also of the thought that before we completely write off Nate Davis, we give him a “real” shot at the starting job before we just pack it in. This of course all falls back on Alex Smith’s 2010 performance.

Troy Smith?

Why not go after the guy that passed him up on the Depth chart. John Beck. Great arm and very accurate. He was in the same situation Smith was in here in San Fran with Miami (1-15) if not for a miracle play by Amarillo they would have been the 1st team to go 0-16.

I wouldnt mind getting another BYU guy in San Fran. Quarterbacks that come out of BYU run the most sophisticated offense in college. Hell most of the Coaches in the League have some type of tie to BYU.

by EcERyda69 on Jun 30, 2010 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Simple...

Smith costs less, is more mobile, and ran a multiple receiver set @ Ohio State. So, he might be able to use more receiving threats than just Crabs, V.D., and Gore. Plus, if I’m not mistaken, Beck didn’t lose his starting job to injury like Troy, he was beaten out by CHAD PENNINGTON! A younger equivilant to Shaun Hill! OUCH!

In a manner of speaking it does...

A shut down corner takes away an entire 1/2 of the field (see: Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey, Darrelle Revis). It won’t matter what kind of pressure you have on the QB. If you take away his best receiving option, that means you have less options to score with.

K.C.Edwards -AKA- "THE" DarkkStarr

by DarkkStarr1 on Jul 1, 2010 7:10 AM PDT up reply actions

ehhh...

shutdown CB’s play man most of the time, so he’s running wherever his man goes. If that dude goes deep sideline every time, well he’s taking away like 1/8th of the field. Plus, he’s not making many plays on anyone else just staying with his man. Sure, I’d gladly accept someone who can shutdown the opponent’s #1 WR but saying he takes away 1/2 of the field isn’t really accurate.

Besides, a good team can beat you with their #2 and #3.

Perspective from Saints fan

The Saints got a pretty good QB 4 years ago. The Saints had the top ranked offense 3 out of 4 years. They didn’t make it to the Superbowl until they improved the defensive secondary. And when I say improved I mean the best secondary the Saints have ever had in over 40 years.

Remember when y’all had Ronnie Lott anchoring the secondary. How many Superbowls did y’all win?

You are right

The point I was trying to make, but did a bad job at is this, you need leaders on both sides of the ball. With the way the rules in the NFL have changed to favor offenses, you need a good secondary to compete with the elite offenses.
